With Year One behind him, Barry finds the Speed Force under attack from all sides! The freeing of the Strength, Still, and Sage Forces has weakened the Speed Force considerably, and it doesn't like that - to the point that the Black Flash is on the prowl for all Strength, Sage, and Still Force users, and he'll go through Barry if he has to!
Don't let the issue covers fool you - this storyline isn't about the Rogues. They're here, bubbling away in the background as the Year Of The Villain branding overtakes the series, only for them to spring into action just in time to take over the following volume. No, this volume's all about the new Force Users, as familiar faces from across the series pop up. Barry's plight feels heartfelt, if sometimes misguided; his hero complex goes a bit overboard at times, when some conversations with his allies could make his life easier, but then he's never been any different. Things really kick into high gear in the final few issues as Hunter Zolomon, Eobard Thawne, and the Black Flash all show up at once, and you know that's going to be a good time. Williamson's long-term plotting for this series pays dividends, as plotlines you never expected to converge do so, and then some.
The art is an equal share between Rafa Sandoval and Scott Kolins, who have proven themselves time and again across this series. They have very disparate styles, but the book is divided cleanly down the middle, so it's not too jarring after the initial transition between the two.
This volume of the Flash exemplifies everything that Williamson has been doing over his four years on the book, with new ideas, old ideas, and unexpected ideas all twining together to make a coherent narrative that will keep you guessing right to the last minute.
