Chandrima Das tells stories that explore the no-man's-land between truth and fear. She is presently working on her debut novel, a supernatural thriller set in North-East India, with the SouthAsia Speaks mentorship program. This is a collection of 4 horror stories set in college campuses. I absolutely loved each one of them. No cliched tools or props have been used. It is very refreshing to read each story. The buildup was perfect, it doesn't jump right into a straightforward scary story, nor does it weave about so long that the reader may get lost. I think it is a rare quality where the plot sets its own pace while completely engaging the reader's interest. This book manages to do so, each of the 4 stories. The suspense builds up quickly and I admit I tried to best to rush ahead to reach to the end of the story, eager to vulgarly indulge into the fear factor. But no! The writing compelled me to pay attention to the settings, the characters, their appearances, characteristics and actions. The twists came at the right points. The endings left me fully satisfied.
Writing a horror story or making a horror movie is a difficult task because the shock or fear factor gets normalized with time. But the stories in this book were scary, the psychological kind, the kind which made us sprint to our beds in the dark when we were kids. I myself had to look behind my back a couple of times!
I also loved the mix that the author throws in her stories. The college settings and their descriptions were nostalgic. They could easily be any large Indian college campus, which makes the stories all the more relatable. There are tinges of humour, grief, ambitious inspiration and personal bravado in each of the stories.
Last but not the least, what I loved about this debut book, is that it has a literary quality. The language and narration are perfect, they don't try to be too casual or loaded with slangs in an attempt to appeal to the masses. It doesn't feel "commercial" for the lack of a better term. Which makes it a delightful reading, because the author's writing style stands apart from contemporary writers, especially the corporate - to - book writing kind.
I'd definitely recommend this book to everyone who loves a good scare!
I am a fan of horror stories from my school days. I studied in a boarding school, so at nights in the hostel, we, a bunch of friends used to share horror stories from our native places. Most of them used to be very scary while some used to be full of fun. Horror stories still interest me. I do watch some movies or series from the genre, but more often I go for Books. This time it was “The Talking Dead” by Chandrima Das .
📖The book is a collection of 4 horror stories, all the stories are from college and hostel except one. All the stories are based on real-life incidents, and it was spooky to know. But the book didn’t disappoint me.
☠️Looking at the cover, one could simply say that it is a simple book that may or may not scare you. But the title goes perfectly with the content and genre of this book. I usually don’t share the name of each story but as this book has only four stories, I will. So, the stories are namely
1️⃣Deja Vu, 2️⃣Middle Finger, 3️⃣Playtime and 4️⃣Room for two.
I won’t tell you about these stories because it was such a small book and I want you to read this.
✒️The language is simple, narration is so good that one can visualise the story while reading. All the characters are developed nicely with a proper introduction. All the stories are gripping as they have a tight plot with a proper build-up. The stories will keep you engaged throughout, and you will be curious to know what will happen next. There is no rushing in any of the stories. In such a short length, this book scares you and interests you at the same time.
🧩I think the story ‘Room for two’ would have been a little more conclusive. Yes, it was scary and engaging, but it did not work well for me. But other stories were super good and scary too.
📢If you are looking for a short horror book, let this be one. I recommend it.
It’s a short read that can be finished in few hours. I picked up this book due to catchy cover and tagline that says, “Four terrifying tales based on true events.” I have rarely read books based on this genre. I will only superficially discuss the concept as they are short stories and it will lead to spoilers. The first story is about a ghost of a girl in an empty hostel wing, who committed suicide. Reema and Suchi heard screams at nights. Read the book to know the plot and the end. I liked how this story ended. Because I am always in dilemma while reading a horror genre like whether it’s going to be a ghost or illusion and author has found a perfect way to narrate and end the stories. I absolutely loved the endings. I liked the plot and concept chosen for the story. The narration style of author is quite intriguing. It holds our attention till the end. The language of the book is lucid so that it directly goes through our mind. I won’t discuss other stories as it will still the thunder of the reader but overall good one. Recommended from my side.
About the book : This book is a collection of 4 short stories. 1. Deja vu Reema and her roommate were studying in their hostel room for their exam next day when they suddenly hear something very chilling!!! 2. Middle finger Aman Malshekhar was busy playing counterstrike in his hostel room when suddenly he suddenly hears his so called friend Vishal Dhanoa calling. Later Dhanoa dares Malshekhar that he would show him something only if he is a real man and won't vomit. 3. Playtime Story about a guy who lives in a hostel and has a habit of going for midnight walks. This habit of him will teach him a lesson!! 4. A Room For Two An Indian girl who recently joins a company to work in Newyork and rents a place to stay. Soon mysterious things she starts to experience in the room she is given. . . Personal opinion: we all experience some unexplained things in our daily life. This book has stories that are mostly related to experiences in hostel life. I am a huge fan of horror stories whether short or novel and after reading the book i can say i am not disappointed at all. I thoroughly enjoyed it and i would recommend it to everyone if you want to experience Fear.
This book had me hooked from the very first sentence. The stories are realistic and yet had me spooked. I liked that every one of them had a twist in the end which I didn't see coming!
‘The Talking Dead’ by Chandrima Das is a book consisting of four short stories which are inspired from some real life events. Each story is unique and shows us some different aspects of humans. Like in one story we can see how inhumanely behaves towards a small kid. Some of us don’t really think about others and what impact it will have on the other people and their families. The characters are well developed and relatable. Some stories surely will give the readers Goosebumps and some might make them emotional. Language is simple and lucid. The book cover and the title of the book is apt to the plot. The author has done an excellent job of portraying the real life situations and human behaviour in each of the story. Some of my favourite stories from the book are:
• Déjà vu • Playtime • A Room for Two I really enjoyed reading all the stories and would surely recommend it to all.
A tight anthology of horror stories that will serve up no jump scares but will make you think. I like that they are all geared towards small scale experiences that unsettle you rather than garish supernatural occurrences. Most of them will leave you mulling over the nature of the spirit world, and I think that's why the title is so lovely: the dead are always talking, if we are only willing to listen. Great stuff!
Horror is my favourite genre be it in movies or books. Right from my childhood few things could get me more excited than a good story in this genre. Though i was always at a loss to find many books of the genre by Indian authors. Im super excited now to have found one :) This book is a collection of 4 short stories set in life of young adults be it in college campuses or new work environments, something so extremely relatable that often many scenes are nostalgic of a life lived itself. However, the talent of the author is in catching the imperceptible even in the nostalgia. To remind us of the fears we bury, the lives we miss, the aspirations that live unfulfilled, the voices we fail to raise.... Thats what really haunts us. Writing is extremely alive in that we feel present in the moment of story every second which is so important for the genre. And i super loved all the stories but especially the third story which left me with both a happiness and a sadness. Like how everything in life is.. often a mixture of the two :)
You see, sometimes ghosts don't haunt places. They haunt the cracks of our broken minds. By Chandrima Das
This book has four short amazing spooky stories which might remind you of your college times, campus life and hostel days where we would long study night with spooky stories behind every unknown voice we hear or thing we see.
For me first two stories were a mild and easy read was as later two were little spookier. I really like the author's narration style simple subtle on point. I also like how in author tried to point out the different issue we face in our life.
Title and the cover are on point and adds the cherry on top for a spooky read.
I will definitely recommend this book because it was on point and very smoothly gave us goosebumps and kept us engaged.
The talking dead by Chandrima Das consist of 4 shirt stories to be precise terrifying horror stories.
Each and every story has the capacity to give chills down the spine and keep the thrill intact, though each and every story is unique but the first one DEJA VU is my fav since I could really relate to the experiences of it, each story has great build up as well as the climax, narration style of author is well suited to write stories of such genre.
The cover is simple but title makes you wonder what's in store and it surely don't disappoint at all, don't really want to spoil the fun of reading this book by giving spoilers, but it kept me hooked to it with fear and excitement at the same time. It's a must read if you wish to explore horror-thriller Genre.
Not referring to the Walking Dead after-show, this is a book and a collection of four short horror stories set in Indian residential college campuses.
Rest assured, I was as scared as a child reading the Goosebumps series, which was the last time I read a horror story. Horror is a very difficult genre to write considering you need to keep your readers' fear ticking up but without dragging on. The stories in the books capture that anticipation brilliantly. The icing on the cake is the nostalgia of studying in such a college campus.
Great short stories! Especially the first one was knockout good. I was too spooked to read it in the night lol. Great setups was one thing, I also enjoyed the acute observations about student life and early career life.
#📖𝒃𝒐𝒐𝒌𝒓𝒆𝒗𝒊𝒆𝒘📚 𝑵𝒂𝒎𝒆: The Talking Dead 𝑨𝒖𝒕𝒉𝒐𝒓: Chandrima Das 𝑮𝒆𝒏𝒓𝒆: Horror 𝑭𝒐𝒓𝒎𝒂𝒕: Kindle 𝑷𝒂𝒈𝒆𝒔: 77 𝑴𝒚 𝒓𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒏𝒈: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 𝑹𝒆𝒗𝒊𝒆𝒘: There are four almost novella length stories in the book that as the book description claims are drawn from real life events. While I can't attest to that, but the stories transported me to the time when I was a mere student in a college hostel. Whenever there was a power cut, a handful of us would sit around a candle and exchange ghost stories. I think it is a rite of passage for all boarders in every hostel to be told the urban legends of their campuses by their seniors. The stories reminded me of our own legends. The first story was a self analyzing, inner ghosts trauma which actually is true for most of us. I relate with the nightmares. The author has brilliantly described the eerie environment of a hostel. The second story was more human horror than ghosts but horror nonetheless. The third and fourth were about hauntings. My favourites were the first and the third one. The thing about horror stories is you are never satisfied. You keep wanting to read more and listen more. That's what I felt after reading the book, and that shows how interesting the stories are. As for the narration, the language is simple and the pace is good. The focus was purely on what was happening rather than unnecessary exploration of the surroundings. Now, whether the stories are scary or not will depend on person to person. For me, I might be told a ghost story about my own room, and I will still sleep with the lights off. So horror stories for me are a relish that I keep having. But I can see how these stories have the potential to curdle your blood and chill your bones. Recommended to all.
This was good! Horror writing is difficult these days because of the easily available jump scares on video. I guess the trick is to make the reader revisit a scary experience with a relatable story. I have been creeped out at night on the "Howrah Bridge" and felt the coldness of New York's apartments. Loved it.
The Talking Dead is a collection of four short stories from the horror genre. Deja vu — young students in a college hostel are afraid to venture out late in the night into a hostel wing as it is believed to be haunted, haunted by the student who lost her life due to seniors’ ragging. A night before their exams, two of the girls hear a woman screaming in the middle of the night which scares them out of their wits. As they spend their night feeling terrible, Reema finds the next day that the screams came from a college mate who had been troubled by a ghost for more than five years. Is it possible for the dead to be seen by the living?
Middle Finger — Dhanao dares Aman to find a strange item, hidden under a cloth in one of their hostel rooms; a rotting middle finger! Dhanao mentions the finger has a legacy of thirty years as it was found hanging in a fence in a secret place behind the hostel, a place not frequented. Can a severed finger from more than three decades stay in place as a witness to a gore incident?
Play time — Students going for an evening walk in the college campus hear a voice whispering near their ears to ‘Go back’; a force which is threatening and pushing them. The experience repeats not for one person but for couple of others as well who go near the Howrah Bridge replica in the campus. One of them even captures a merry-go-round moving on its own, continuously. Does spirits really exist or it is a figment of our imagination?
Room for Two — A young consultant who recently got job in New York moves to an Airbnb to suit her budget. On most days she is dead tired to cook or eat or spend time in her room. But on days when she switches on the TV in her room, the channel mysteriously keeps changing to a specific sports channel and the TV remote wouldn’t listen to her. On such days, in the middle of the night, all lights in her room shine their brightest while the room gets freezing. Is the young lady hallucinating or the room has an invisible second occupant?
As the blurb suggests, all four stories are horror stories, however, the first and third ones have some traces of horror. The second story of the middle finger could have been better as it is spooky only to a certain extent and disappoints when compared to the other three. Also, the fourth one is left a bit open ended without revealing the complete suspense.
The horror element is not very scary and could have been more intense. That said, all four stories are gripping, entertaining and will keep the reader asking for me. If read as short stories and not as horror stories, they are brilliant. The cover adds to the intrigue of the blurb and title. The background for each of the story and the few characters used for each story by the author are impressive. The short messages left by the author at the end of each story with respect to extra natural elements and their interpretation by human minds are interesting. Pick this one for interesting short stories and don’t expect spine chilling horror though!
Book Title: The Talking Dead Author: Chandrima Das Format: Kindle
Book Title: The title of the book ' The Talking Dead ' is definitely mysterious and spine tickling.
Book Cover: The cover image of the book is an interesting picture of a man In business formals but without the head. Wait what? Yes...without a head and tossing the head.
My review: Being a regular reader of Indian authored English books, two genres that I almost seldom read is horror and fantasy. But due to lockdown I am reading every genre and believe me I started liking. This book, 'The Talking Dead' is probably my fifth book in gore and thriller genre. Author Chandrima has given me a perfect gift.
It feels great that new-age Indian authors are trying their hand in diverse genres and themes else after Chetan Bhagat's revolution Indian novels were based only on college romance and chic lit literature.
Coming to the book, ' The Talking Dead ' there are 4 interesting stories. Though each story is woven on a different thread of plotline, when checked a reader finds a common prop and that is ' The Hostel'.
The stories are conceptualized nicely. There is suspense, thrill, and drama. The best part of the book is how a thought gets processed due to dear and anxiety. From the very start till the very end, the stories are gripping. The mere fear when kills logical thinking and ends up believing something unusual is one of the underlying points every story has.
Since the stories are short I do not want to disclose much about the stories. For example, an age-old rotten finger found in the hostel room though creates fear but when thought logically, loose threads fall into place. But it can be taken for granted that the book is an absolute treat for the readers.
Characters: The characters in the stories are drafted very well.
Narration: Gripping narration is observed in the stories.
Language & Grammar: Simple and colloquial language is found in the book.
My Final Verdict: A spooky and uncanny book!
Book Title: 3/5 Book Cover: 3/5 Plot: 3/5 Characters: 3/5 Narration: 3/5 Language & Grammar: 3/5 Final Rating: 3/5
"The Talking Dead" contains stories which can make the readers visualise horror, and experience chills to the bones. Chandrima Das writes 4 short stories stemming out from the paranormal genre, and she does a great job in achieving a very balanced narrative, making way for a spooky read.
The best part about the stories was the interesting backdrops to each of them, coupled with the mature writing style with which the author has chosen to pen them down. The diction of the author is precise and direct, with visible emphasis on setting up the mood and premise to each story. An elaborate mastery of weaving the stray storylines into a well-rounded plot could be seen right from the start, and Chandrima's narration demonstrates an entertaining recipe of horror and thrill.
The element of horror in the stories were often very easy to relate to. Mysteriously enough, there is something about the author's writing that makes us feel as if the events are unfolding before our eyes and not inside the book. The narration and the events transport us deep into the storylines, injecting the horror into our perceptions and senses. The stories often involve young people, in familiar settings like the community hostel and college campus--and so they never felt distant or unlikely to suddenly happen in our own lives. The author hasn't resorted to hasty executions of the stories, or jumped very abruptly to the climaxes. The build-up is punctuated with the right amount of relaxed storytelling, but also with elements of thrill and suspense.
The description of paranormal activities come with stark attention to psychological angles, and the visible effects in which the mind responds to it. Fear and horrific anxiety gets explained with minutely attempted instances, and this adds to the various dimensions of horror the book encompasses.
'The talking dead' is a bold attempt of the author in the horror genre, and it sparks a bright interest to read more of her works in the near future!

I am a person who use to believe in visuals when it is about horror genre. Only when you watch or hear something scary it frightens you otherwise it does not but I was wrong. The Talking Dead is my first horror genre book and to be very honest it creeped me out and gave me chills down my spine.
The Talking Dead is a gripping tales of four terrifying stories which are based on real life events straight form the supernatural heart of India. The four stories which are DÉJÀ VU, Middle Finger, Playtime and A Room For Two were horrific.
The way the author has narrated these stories gave me goosebumps. While I was reading I could feel everything happening in the stories. All the stories are interesting and nail biting, till the end you will be on the edge and wondering what will happen next.
I really enjoyed all the four stories. I cant say which one was my favorite as I felt the same while reading the stories but they were gripping till the end. I completed in one go as I was curious to know how each story unfolds. They were catchy even though they were creeping me out. Recommended to all Horror lovers and those who love short stories, you will surly enjoy reading them 😊❤️

As soon as I read the synopsis, I had a good feeling about this book. It had all my favorite components four times. I love reading thrillers and this book has not just one but four fantastic thrillers for my liking. Needless to say, this one became my favorite of the short stories that I have read this year. It has four horror stories all set on college campuses. Each story moved at the perfect pace. Not too racy but just the right amount of details to grab the attention and building up the suspense and each ending was very satisfactory. I don’t want to give away any spoilers because the suspense is amazing and I don’t want to ruin it for anyone. Let me just say, that it will give you a good scare. The stories also have other elements that revolve around college life and it might make you nostalgic at some points. The writing is very good. To write horror stories is tough. It needs to provide the details to keep interested and build up the suspense as well. The author has done an amazing job on this front. The writing just lures you into a different world. It grips you and some scenes were chilling to the bone. You can finish the book in a few hours mainly because of the suspense. You would want to know the ending soon. I was so into the book that I got startled when my dad stood behind me while I was reading. I am very satisfied that I read this book. All I wish was that I had read it sooner. I would rate it 5/5 for the awesome four stories and the fantastic Author Chandrima Das.
It's a compilation of four short horror stories, basically more a kind of novella. These stories are inspired by real life incidents and events which makes it more interesting to read. Three of the stories revolves around college, campus and hostel life. The stories are namely- Deja Vu, Middle Finger, Playtime and Room for two. Out of these four, Playtime is my most favourite. Other then horror this stories will make you remind of your college days and if were or is a hosteller then you can definitely relate with these stories. Thriller is another powerful elements used here, also power, violence and manipulations are some of the topics used herein this stories. The scenes have been well described and the characters are well sketched. The emotions and the fear and anxiety have been nicely penned down in the book. Overall it was a nice read.
The language used here is simple and lucid. The narration is fast paced and the storyline is engaging. The stories are short but gripping and nail biting. No unnecessary drama or elements have been added here to exaggerate the plot which I liked the most. The cover and the title is totally apt for it. I would definitely recommend to those who are into horror genre. I quite enjoyed reading all of the stories. Nothing extra special or something but the stories felt more real and creepy enough to hooked you till the end.

- 'The Talking Dead' by Chandrima Das.
Do you love reading Spooky stories? Especially in Halloween?!
I do!!! I make sure to read atleast one spooky read in October, and this year I read 'The Talking Dead' by Chandrima Das.
Book Review🍂
'The Talking Dead' by Chandrima Das is a collection of four spooky short stories. The Four short stories are 'Deja Vu' , 'Middle Finger' , 'Playtime' and 'A Room for Two'. I really enjoyed reading all the short stories, they were super creepy and intriguing.
The plots of the stories aren't connected, every story is unique with haunting plots! Well, I love Ruskin Bond's spooky stories, Chandrima Das' 'The Talking Dead' gave me Bond's spooky story vibes. The characters are well constructed in the uncanny plots. The language is simple and lucid, convincing for all readers.
I read this book in one sitting, not because of the easy peasy language, the storylines of the short stories are eerie and hair raising.
Few readers don't read this genre because of the disturbing sequences in the plot, but 'The Talking Dead' is not a disturbing read, it is spine tingling. If you are looking for a short spooky read, then I would certainly recommend 'The Talking Dead' by Chandrima Das.
There are four chapters in this book, namely Déjà vu, Middle Finger, Playtime, and A Room for Two. All stories are happening around the students at the college. I don't wanna say more, I should myself from spoiler contents. I particularly enjoyed reading the chapter Room for two, which got me more hooked to the book. The book is all set at a fast pace.
One of the important features of successful scary books is the suspense and the author didn't disappoint me. The horror element could have been better. The author did an amazing job of painting the exact situation for the readers with an intense mood. The author builds a good momentum in bringing out the character's portrayal. Man, writing a scary story and making it gripping to the readers till the end is not an easy job, I should appreciate the author for the very same thing.
The language is lucid and easy to understand. The title is creative and the book cover is satisfactory. The storytelling part is good, and I could relate to some of the dialogues in real life. You can finish this book within a few hours. This book is a perfect one for Halloween. Go for it guys! It is easy to read and anybody can give it a shot. I would recommend this to all readers. All the best to the author!
Review: 👉The book is a collection of four nail biting tales drawn from real life experiences. A fresh story written in a different way with mix of different elements.
👉Each story is set up realistic and descriptions are vivid. The plot starts normally and then draws to suspense and scares. The twists seem to be unexpected but are really built well.
👉It revolves around the concept of people don't stop talking even after they are dead. The stories also involves some psychological facts and few seem to turn into our nightmares.
👉I personally liked "A long lonely walk at midnight. Each story is narrated in a very interesting way. As all horror stories don't end up interesting, but this work of being debut book is really written well.
👉The title is really interesting and justifies the storyline. Cover is apt. Language is simple yet effective.
👉Plot is well developed, characters and scenes seem to be realistic and well built. Narration is smooth and engaging storyline. This book can be completed in a single go as it's a shirt read. 🌼
Recommended read to the ones looking for short and suspense thriller read. Do give it a try. 🌼
Title - The Talking Dead Author - Chandrima Das Genre - Horror /short stories Pages - 77 Format - Kindle . . This book is a collection of 4 nerve chilling stories from the real life events. Play time - a walk of students at midnight in college campus. 4.Room for two - a horrifying welcome of a young consultant in the new city. Read the book and enjoy these terrifying tales. . . Review - Starting from the cover it's designed well and generates the scary effect. The title of the book is also horrifying. The plot of each story is spooky and mysterious with lots of twists. It is a perfect blend of horror, mystery, thrill and cruelty. The author has very well narrated all the scenes and emotions of suffering. The language used is simple and lucid. Characters are well developed. The flow of each story is fast paced which makes each and every story an engaging read. Overall, amazing stories. . . Rating - 4.2/5 . . I recommend this book to all.
I'm a bit disappointed because I'd expected to be creeped out by these stories.
The common theme is how the dead make themselves heard/felt by the living. The author doesn't just narrate the story, she also includes some interesting commentary. This made it refreshing to read them.
Except for the last one, "A Room for Two", which revolves around a mysterious room in New York city, I would not consider the stories terrifying at all. Just interesting--the way true crime stories are.
"Playtime" ends beautifully, giving us an empathetic look into the world of spirits. I think it is the best of the lot.
The longish length of the stories, closer to novella-length, made me impatient instead of building up the suspense/horror factor. I felt that a more terrifying effect could have been achieved with fewer words. Some details could have been edited out.
Chandrima's language is polished and her sentences flow beautifully. There's a literary quality to it--it isn't written in popular fiction style.
Nevertheless, the stories didn't have the punch that I'd expected. They were too tame for me.
Book Name- The Talking Dead Author- Chandrima Das Review- The Talking dead is a blend of horror and suspense which unveils four tales good enough to send chills down the readers spine. The book is a short read and covers four horror stories, each has a unique concept and detailed narration. Deja vu, Middle finger, Playtime and Room for two are the stories unveiled in the book. All the stories are full if twists and turns with the sprinkle of timely horror events hinting towards the chilling mystery we’re unaware of. Out of all the four stories I really liked ‘Room For Two'. The protagonist lives in a vintage building in New York where she has recently moved in for job purpose. The character is well built and is mostly busy with her work but when she has free time at her rented place she experiences the presence of a soul which she was unaware of. The title is aptly chosen as it conveys the spirit talking to the alive. Ratings- Title- 4/5 Cover- 4/5 Narration- 4/5 Concept- 4/5 Overall- 4/5
Short stories are best way to cover up different angles in a single book. This book comprises of 4 short horror stories i.e 1)Deja Vu 2) middle finger 3) playtime 4)A room for two. Out of this four stories , story 4 -A room for two gave me goosebumps where a young consultant got a job at world's financial capital - new York but she is shaken up when her TV remotes doesn't accept her command and switch to one particular channel. Now is this a technical issue or she have a hidden roommate?. I have never read this genre before so my experience with this stories was phenomenal. Narration and drafting are remarkable. However there wasn't much of scary elements which was good for a beginner like me. Characters crafted were astonished giving life to the scene. I would recommend this book for beginner in horror genre. Cover is perfect with human body without head giving a scary look.
