If you’re still undecided if you should read this book I’m here to tell you: READ IT! I promise you won’t regret it! There are so many great things about it… First and foremost for me is the relationship between the main characters. SWOON. There’s such a sweetness and pureness about it. It’s the type of love one can only wish to be lucky enough to find. Besides that, the characters! There are so many great characters – Keysha I’m looking at you – and I loved their relationships and their dialogues so much. They’re funny and relatable and soooo charismatic and I wish I could become their friend.

I also really loved the showbiz setting. Seriously, I never thought I’d find a novel about fame and popular culture that was so engrossing! Add to all of that some amazing suspense and unexpected twists (OMG the twists! For someone who can usually foresee what’s about to come I have to say I REALLY wasn’t expecting some events). I just couldn’t put it down, I was up all night reading it! In sum, the book really is beautifully written. It has depth, the characters are well-developed and the story is just overall great. It’s not just one more silly superficial romance book, it will really give you the FEELS. If you’re in need of a read to keep your mind out of this corona craziness I strongly suggest picking up this one. I’m definitely keeping my eyes peeled for this author!!

The best book I’ve ever read. The way it is written drives you to the pop industry scenario and it makes you fall in love for the characters. I literally took two days to read it. I just couldn’t stop it until the very unexpected end. Right now is the second time reading this masterpiece. I super recommend it!

The Legendary Shiver is truly a breathtaking debut novel and MacAl is one to watch. From the first few pages, I was completely devoted to the main characters. I myself felt that Will and I were kindred spirits. I found myself invested in every single character in this story. MacAl does a phenomenal job of developing each character and immersing the reader fully into his story. This tale of love and friendship has everything that you wish for in romantic fiction and then some.

Early in the story we meet Will and Ruby who become fast friends their senior year of high school. Both have dreams of leaving their small town life and together they set after their dreams in NYC. As the story progresses we go on their journey as Ruby seeks stardom in the music industry and Will sets out to find himself beside her. I was reminded of myself as I read their story and the bonds of their relationship.

This is a story of fierce friendship and the difficulties of the rise to fame. There is plenty of love to go around but there is also friendship, heartbreak, betrayal, loss, struggle and a journey that is sure to inspire you to live life and take nothing for granted. This was a ride I will not soon forget, for it left me shattered (but in a good way.) I highly recommend this book!

⭐⭐⭐⭐💫
Small town girl Ruby Magnata has long dreamt of being a famous singer. With hopeful ambitions, and stars in her eyes she packs up and heads to New York...dead set on making it. Ruby soon learns talent isn't enough...if she wants to be at the top...sacrifices have to be made, friends will get neglected, and lives will be destroyed. While she may have all her heart ever wanted...the price of fame might cost her soul.

Along for the ride is William Cooper da Silva, long-time friend, who's heart Ruby holds. Always by her side, never judging, he understands to be there when he's needed...to be the anchor that keeps her sane. He soon begins to climb in the music industry as well, managing artists outside of Ruby, but at what cost. Will the truth and depth of his feelings for Ruby be enough to save her and restore both their hearts?

The music industry is brutal. One wrong decision will ruin an entire career and long-time friendships. It will also warp who you are and cause chaos all around you. This had me feeling all the feels. This is not just about Ruby's rise to stardom and her subsequent downfall. It's also about a love that spans the decade, unflinching and pure, and how that love eventually brought them back together and saved both their tortured souls.

In my humble opinion, all this needs is some editing and fine tuning and it is sure to hit the 5 star charts all over the book world. Amazing debut.

5/5 for sure
This book took me by surprise. I fell in love with the characters from chapter one.The Legendary Shiver The plot is concise and hooks you. It’s the sort of book you fall in love with without even noticing. The Legendary Shiver The Legendary Shiver by J.H. MacAl I went to bed thinking about it, and woke up wanting to read it.
I loved the discussion regarding mental health. I loved the drama. And I love KEYSHA. Best character ever written.
Keep an eye out for her. We want a spin off.
The third act got me emotional, I confess. The ending is superb. And Chapter 14 (not saying its name to avoid spoilers)… damn. Wasn’t expecting it at all.

At first I wasn't sure this book was going to be my cup of tea but as the plot developed, so did the writing for the better. William and Ruby (Shiver) move to New York. William to complete a degree and help Ruby. Ruby to create music and help her struggling mother.

The writing style is different and at first I wasn't 100% sold on it but once emotional events started to occur, the author really comes into his own. There are many plot twists within this book, that are well thought through and beautifully described.

One of my favourite characters was Keysha as I think she balanced out the friend group with a firmer hand and an approach to life that is admirable.

The mental health representation is well done in this book, and I think it is very telling of what we see many celebrities going through in this society.e.g. breakdowns, scandals, self harming behaviours. The only improvement I would add is a trigger warning and perhaps some helpline numbers at the beginning of the book for s**ual assault victims as it can be quite mentally strenuous to read about.

Other than that, this is a great debut novel and the author should be very proud of what he has achieved.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

What. A. Book

I had so many emotions when reading this book you can’t tell the authors talent and love was poured into the book.

The book left me feeling complete and I love when a book makes me think, love, want to cry and hit my head against a wall there wasn’t an emotion un felt.

The book for me personally shone a light on the music industry in an honest view the highs the lows and the be all or end all it takes.

This is the sort of book that will last with me for years to come. Thought provoking, captivating and immersive it’s all I could of asked for and more.

This is a must read I couldn’t put It down

Nights ago I was trying to find something to read before going to bed. I found the title interesting and decided to give it a try. I thought I would read a few pages and fall asleep. What a mistake! I only dropped the book when I noticed it was already 3 am and I would have to wake up in a few hours.

In the first chapter, I fell in love: the characters are captivating and, despite being a fiction book, I know so many people with the same emotions and doubts. It is so easy to recognize our own friendships on these pages.

Halfway through, I was so attached to the narrative that I started counting the pages until the end of the book.

It is a dynamic reading, with a flawless narrative, able to hold your attention and make you visualize each scenario. Above all, painfully well written. Beautiful.

I will not anticipate anything else - I could not do the story justice. Read it. But read It slowly. It is an experience worth taking calmly.

One of my friends was reading this book and told me we should read it at the same time bc it is the kind of book that catches your attention and you need someone to share your feelings about it. So we did it and WOW!!! I’m glad we did it together bc you fall in love for the characters, find lots of unexpected surprises and you DEFINITELY need someone to talk about it. My advice: read it with one friend so you can have the same great experience.
This is that kind of book that you can only stop when it’s over, and these are my fav kind of books. Besides that, you can find a lot of yourself there too. Love and music are things that can be easy to feel but hard to put outhere for other people/the world.
Having said all that, I need to let you know that Keysha NEEDS to be in a spin off as said in another comment! I beg you! Lol

This book was phenomenal! It takes you through nearly a decade of a successful pop singer's career, through the eyes of her best friend. You witness her rise, and you cheer. You witness her fall, and you cry. And you witness her resurrection, and you find yourself cheering again. And then the ending hits you like a greyhound bus on the way to Brokenheartsville. I really truly thoroughly enjoyed this book.

There is clearly a lot of research and planning that went into this novel, and it shows. The plot is well planned out. A LOT happens in a fairly short book but I never felt rushed or lost. The characters are fully developed. They have depth. They have strengths and weaknesses. They have flaws that make you want to scream at them - I LOVE that. There are so many Mary Sue characters in literature and there is NONE of that in this book. For a debut novel it is absolutely phenomenal and I can't wait to see what the author puts out next!

I adored this read!!

Synopsis:
Ruby and Will are the best of friends. Meeting in high school and becoming inseparable. Ruby has big dreams of becoming a star. Will's only dream is to follow her anywhere. Their amazing friendship goes through many challenges. Ruby struggles to see her dream come true and when it does can she handle STARDOM.

The main characters are endearing, they are also surrounded by friends that I absolutely loved. I found myself interested in not only the main characters' journeys but that of their loving entourage.
It is a story of love, determination and the making of a Legend. Let's just say I think someone was cutting an onion while I read- especially the ending 🥺.

Thank you @smokesandwine & @jhmacal for my gifted copy. The thoughts above are my own!!

LEGENDARY!

The book tells the story of how Ruby became SHIVER MAGNATA, a music icon, from the perspective of her best friend William.

Thus, we follow her journey until reach the long-awaited fame. In the midst of this, we have the dark side of the music industry, Shiver's personal torments and the unwavering desire to be known through her voice and love for music. As the book is from Will's point of view, we also follow his importance in Shiver's journey, his immense love for her and his insecurity in not feeling worthy of that love.

It is a very fluid narrative, full of events, there is a time lapse in the history of almost 10 years. When I started reading, I just couldn't let go, I fell in love with each song and the characters, I got completely involved, I rooted for them, I suffered with them, I wanted to kill them in a few moments and I got emotional with the approach of more serious topics such as abuse and depression.

Despite the speed of events, the plot is very well worked and the characters very well developed, in addition to that, I was surprised at various moments during the reading with unexpected facts.

I must say that the plot of best friends who falls in love is not my favorite, but I need to bite my tongue for Shiver and Will. It is the most beautiful relationship of all the books I have ever read, it is really impossible not to get involved and cheer for them every second.

Despite this, I need to point out that it is not just a story of romance, Shiver's journey alone is already extremely interesting, as well as the sub-narratives of the secondary characters. The only defect I see in the book is that it ends soon and I already missing such amazing characters.

I just loved it, strongly recommend it and invite everyone to know THE LEGENDARY SHIVER!

The Legendary Shiver

📚 𝗛𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗼 𝗯𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗱𝘀! New author, J.H. MacAl, recently contacted me to see if I would be interested to read and review his first book 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗟𝗲𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗦𝗵𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿 which was recently published. I am always honoured when authors contact me directly and trust me to read their books. I was not sure what to expect from this book, but I liked the promising synopsis. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗟𝗲𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗦𝗵𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿 totally took me by surprise. I read it in one sitting and was blown away by the beautiful writing and story. This is a modern “Love Story” which will touch you, frustrate you, and enthrall you. The characters are superb, and the plot is well delivered. The ending is unexpected and mind-blowing.

If you are looking for a beautiful love story, look no further, and get a copy of this stunning book.

🙋🏼‍♀️ Thank you, 𝗝.𝗛. 𝗠𝗮𝗰𝗔𝗹 for sending me an e-copy of your astounding novel. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗟𝗲𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗦𝗵𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿 is available on Amazon.

Definitely recommend this book to anyone looking for a new read!
This love story was just something I could not put down. As I was reading I came to love all the characters as well as the whole idea of a romance and love trying to survive in an industry where many have been seen to not withstand. Amazing idea behind this story and it is one you will not be able to put down!
I wish I read this with a friend or someone else because as I was reading I caught myself wanting to talk about every little thing that happened.
Overall a well written book that turned out to be a very pleasant read.

Oh. My. God. This was intense!

Definitely one of the best books I’ve read in a very long time; friendship, love, betrayal, loss - it’s all there. The main characters are so relatable - successful, yet, so insecure and... Broken.

The love and the pain caused by hiding your true feelings between them have been described in such a beautiful way. I literally could feel everything in my body as I was reading it. {no joke, my heart aches right this moment!}

If this story doesn’t inspire you to fight for the people that matter the most and not take anything for granted, then I don’t know what will!

And in all this double mess, a double love despair web,
Two lovers are caught, are caught.
How long will it take for two lovers to be not?”
🦄🦄🦄
Shiver, that was how the world would remember Ruby Maganta, the legend that rose to fame because of her powerful voice and beautiful songs.
Ruby always wanted to make it big in the entertainment industry, and with her best friend Will by her side, nothing was impossible.
This story tells the tale of an ordinary girl who's world turned into an emotional rollercoaster ride once she was thrusted into the spotlight of music and parties.
Her best friend Will, swore never to leave her side, through all these ups and downs he promises to stick by her, because he loves her.
But what if it all gets too much to handle for them?
🦄🦄🦄
The Legendary Shiver is a fictional novel by J.H. MacAl.
Ruby is the most relatable character for everyone because let's admit it, at one point or another we all dreamt about becoming famous (remember Rachel and Phoebe's acceptance speeches 😂) we've all done that, don't lie!
However, as the story progresses she turns into more of a diva and loses the reason why she loved singing and songwriting for a moment.
Because we can relate to Ruby, you end up rooting for her not only to make it big, but to take the right decisions.
Everyone makes mistakes, but she fights through it with the help of the people closest to her.
Which brings me to Will, he is willing to do anything for Ruby to give her the dream she always wanted and the fact that he loves her intensifies his drive even further.
The whole story is one long and hard journey for them to understand that the celebrity life does not mean you have to yourself, it can propel you to a better version of yourself.
The ending (and the wholestory for that matter) shook me to my core and made me wonder, is this what it really takes to be a celebrity?

"Sometimes dreams are all we have, and they can save us from the darkest pits of despair."

J.H. MacAl's debut novel "The Legendary Shiver" came out this April. It is a contemporary story about friendship and the struggle to make it in the shifty music industry, and about what fame can do to a person, but mostly it is an intense love story - possibly the most penetrating one I have ever read.

The story is told by Will, who together with his best friend, Ruby, moves to New York to make something of themselves. Will does the traditional thing with college and an internship, whereas Ruby pursues a career in show business. As Ruby rises to fame, they quickly learn that shady people and scandals lurk all over in the world of showbiz. And it doesn't take long before both of them realize that Ruby's fame which seemed like a dream-come-true instead has ended up as an ultimate test of their friendship.
The novel makes you wonder just how far would you go to help and protect a friend? And it addresses a very relatable issue of whether or not you are worthy of love, and if there is such a thing as not being good enough.

On the surface, the story might seem like something that has been done before, but don't be fooled; the plot twists and turns, making it impossible to foresee the events.
I read the book in just one day - I could not put it down, and I made my way through the final chapters with tears running down my face.

It truly is an amazing read.

Raw, real, and tragic.

It is one of the most refreshing novels I’ve read in quite some time. Something I find is very underrated about writing is when it’s made effortless. Meaning the words roll off your tongue and flow down the page. The words become your own thoughts and the actual act of reading requires little to no effort. Not only is it special when it happens, but it is very rare in today’s novels. However, MacAl captures it wonderfully while also covering a multitude of themes such as love, depression, acceptance, and loss.

It is about humanity as well as the painful realities and sacrifices that come with trying to make it as an artist in today’s world. I empathized with each character because of the depth and crafty composure by MacAl that draws you in and opens you up to the relatable experiences they are going through. He does this by using human emotion, raw and beautiful, to connect his readers to the characters. For example, you don’t have to be a struggling singer to feel Ruby’s sacrifice and pain because it comes from a much deeper level inside of her. Her true pain comes from her abuse as a child, the abandonment she feels, and her own insecurities.

From the get go, its all too obvious that from the very first moment Will meets Ruby, he is hooked and very much in love with her. Ruby knows she is gorgeous and destined for big things. She also plays a part in helping Will to realize that he is also destined for greatness too and that's when the journey begins.

Sometimes I feel because this book is not a long story, it felt like some parts flew too fast like the book is basically a memoir of sorts rather then a story. Some parts did flow and are personal then just like that half a year has gone and the impersonal touch left.

In all I absolutely adore the story plot. It's full of drama and is quite the roller-coaster ride. At one stage I did start to feel like it was all about Ruby. I also wanted to know what was going on with Will. How does he feel? What's going on inside his head? His life? You do eventually get MOST of the answers about his life, thoughts and aspirations.

This book was above everything very addictive. I found that I couldn't stop reading it until I got to the very end. And when I did get to near the end. I got a metaphorical blow to my insides.

Beautifully complex and irrevocably heartbreaking. This is a must read for music lovers and romantics especially but you may like it if you also want to read something a little different.

I give this a 5 because I could easily reread this book again and again. Mostly the message of the story resonated with me and the main relationship centered around the story made me think of the love between my fiance and me. I'm not a soppy person really but this story was very beautiful and I reccomend the read. If it was a physical copy, I would add it to my shelf to reread for many years to come.

*Thanks to the author for giving me a digital copy of this book in exchange for an honest review*

This book follows the story of a rising star named Ruby from the perspective of her childhood friend Will. I really wanted to like this book as there was a diverse cast of characters and a pretty unique plot, but I just have to be honest and say I did not enjoy it.

First of all, I could not look past the MANY grammatical, spelling, and phrasing errors throughout this book. I was highlighting mistakes on almost every page. This book really needed to be edited, especially since this wasn’t just a first draft but a book that’s currently for sale. Even spellcheck would have helped.

Apart from that, I just didn’t find the story or characters compelling. A big part of this was the pacing. The first half of the book had such fast pacing that I found I just didn’t have time to connect to any of the characters. There was a ton of telling and not showing the plot in that first half. Also, the romance part of the story just frustrated me as it was a ton of drama without any actual pay off. That epilogue also brought my star rating down to a one because it just felt so unnecessary and instead of it being an emotional end to the book, it ended up rendering the whole story kind of pointless in my opinion. I was SO frustrated reading that epilogue, man oh man.

Overall, this book wasn’t for me. I found myself just wanting to DNF it so many times and move on to something else. I’m not meaning for this to be a overly harsh review, but I just couldn’t bring myself to give this a higher rating. Perhaps after some editing, a revision of the pacing, and omitting the epilogue this could be an enjoyable read but I can not recommend this book at this time.

One word. WOW! This is one of the best books I’ve read in a while. I’ve read some amazing books thus far for the year but not in this genre. This is the first LBGT book I’ve read and I absolutely loved it. The characters were well developed, the climax was well developed and resolved, everything in this book was just well developed.

At the beginning of the book my favorite character was Ruby aka Shiver, but coming to the ending it changed to Keysha. I think everyone should have at least one friend like Keysha. Well actually they should have a friend like William and John as well but a Keysha is definitely needed.

Furthermore, I loved how William and Ruby practically grew up together from kids to adults. They have seen each other at their best and worst but while Ruby was completely worse and at times out of control, William remained that loyal friend she needed whether she wanted it at the time or not. Then how they finally got together, absolutely amazing.

I would definitely give this book a 5/5. I’ll also recommend it for those who love a good drama and romance book.

The Legendary Shiver had me hooked from the very beginning since I am a music addict and the story shows a young girl trying to make it in the music industry.

I felt awful for Will who struggled to get out of the friendzone for such a long time. He's always there to support his best friend and bring her back on track despite being told to leave multiple times.

The story shows how true friendship can overcome almost any obstacle and can evolve into a bigger feeling - love. There are cute moments, sad moments and moments that made me cringe with embarrassment. Shiver's journey really shows what can happen to a person when fame gets into their head.

I am begging one of you to read this book so I can talk about the ending. The ending BROKE MY HEART. I was up in my bed with a tear-stained face, sobbing loudly. At 2am.

It's a truly beautiful book.

On a side note, I really want to hear the songs that feature in it.

On another side note, there were a few things that reminded me of Harry Styles. "Golden" being one of the songs in the book (also the first track on Shiver's second album) and "Falling again" being another song. So, even if it wasn't intentional I liked that little nod towards my favourite artist.

Normally I like my books with a little magic, but occasionally I step out of that and find something different. When this was suggested to me I opened it eagerly for something new: a book about a girl rising to stardom. It was intriguing to read about the drama and stresses that plague artists in the industry. I enjoyed the fast pace and the relationships that grew between characters - by the end I found myself attached to them. Overall, I enjoyed the author’s writing and look forward to reading more in the future :)

I was offered a free digital copy in exchange for an honest review of the book

Okay, so I was 95% of the way through this book and was sure it was going to be a 4 🌟 read.
Nope.
Right at the last minute J.H. MacAl came in and got that last star. He had me staring up at the wall like how in the hell.
I have to say I was like 20% through and didn't think I was going to like it. But, somehow, somewhere before the 25% mark it hooked me and I flew through the rest of the book. Yes, there are some grammar problems but I was so enthralled with the story I didn't even notice. And yes the beginning was a little slow but stick with it because it is worth it! Will and Ruby's love story is one for the books. Even though there were times I was so frustrated with both of them but, you keep on rooting for them because their love is beautiful! Also, Keysha and John by far my favorite characters. This book would not be the same without them. Keysha being the voice of reason throughout the whole story and John being the friend you never knew you needed!

I will be anxiously awaiting his next novel!

A captivating tale of fame, friendship and love 🖤 #thelegendaryshiver is an honest and relatable story of two imperfect people's journey from adolescence to adulthood and all of the changes and challenges in between.

I was honored when an up and coming author reached out and asked me to help support his dream of having his work published. This novel is both beautiful and tragic and I have no doubt it will take him far.

Thank you for bringing me along the ride @smokesandwine. You are a true talent and have a forever-fan in me ❤🤓📚

This book was eye opening as it sent so many reminders on why we shouldn't overwork ourselves no matter how passionate we are. It makes it clear on how we can literally deteriorate when trying so hard to constantly work and not pay attention to what ...and who is right in front of us. Although it took me a while to read because ... 3 kids ... I still found it to be a page turner with the love story and weird triangles going on. Makes you smile, makes you tear and makes you appreciate life for what it's worth. I'd definitely recommend this one 👌

I am in love with this book! After the author kindly asked me to read his book I of course agreed!! This was a wild ride from start to finish with amazing character developments. Written through the perspective of the best friend William, he confesses his love and admiration over the protagonist Ruby even through her struggles. However my favourite characters had to be John and Keysha, this best friend duo were absolutely perfect! Everything you need in a friendship with banter and a solid ground. There were many twists and turns during this book which made me spend the whole day reading it just so I didnt lose my place, I had tears in my eyes at the end so this is definitely a must read! You can clearly tell how much hard work, effort and love the author put into this book and it really paid off, I will definitely reread so many more times

As soon as I began reading this novel I was so taken aback by the fact that this was the author's debut! This engrossing story of friendship and love reads as if it's already on the "bestsellers" shelves of your big name bookstores! If you're looking for a beautiful, fast-paced, YA romance, this book is totally for you! Great read, very impressive!
