Rate this book

There is a little controversy about the book, as events around conference are unclear, there are only few sources and evidence about it, so whole book is more fabulation than transcription of facts. I can live with that. If the main point is to present Nazis as cold, heartless beings, able to treat killing people as industrial project, and for the sake of narration make some concessions, I can accept that. Unfortunately, this doesn't really works. I'm not sure for who this book is intended, as for somebody with interest in Second World War, it isn't bringing to much to the table. If target is young audience, and purpose it to awake interest, it also doesn't work. Story covers only short period of time around conference which took maybe two hours top. Significant part ten talks about arrival of attendees, refreshments and some administrative talks. Storytelling is also not very good. Sometimes you don't really know what is happening on the panels, and some of them are redundant. Art also doesn't help, as it looks more like unfinished sketch, with fuzzy faces, looking very similar. If whole book covered wider span, with some events preceding conference and maybe some after war investigation, it could work better. * more for that fact, that I wasn't aware of conference, and it kind of awaken my interest.

(0,5 of 5 for a terrifying but interesting historical setting butchered by Fabrice Le Henanff)
There is great importance in knowing our history so we will know better than repeat it. Thus I was excited about comics retelling the Wannsee meeting (which is testimony how something horrific like the holocaust and "final solution" can emerge), especially knowing we're lucky to even know about it.
But there is another thing. Agitated, political, war crimes and especially holocaust comics has it much easier. When the result is bad and you don't turn the blind eye to it, you are automatically "denier" or hater. Apparently to some, the (idea of) message is most important no matter what. But I must oppose - how the message could be well delivered and presented if the messenger is a completely incompetent idiot? Because fact are facts, but the delivery matters greatly. Especially if you want to educate someone.
Comics Wannsee is great in the topic and the written history facts. Its problematic issue is comics part or so-called "sequential art". The composition of panels is more collage than comics thanks to terrible work with panels, weird "scenes" and used art. There are no panel dynamics, people looks are inconsistent (the persons look different with every new scene, it's easy to confuse who is who and who's saying what), the scenes/frames look often more like portraits or sketches created for tourist by street artists. And they just don't work together in a narrative, "the movie", way. On one page looks Heydrich 3 times different (in the face, style and even in changing hairline). There are panels in line, which are classic static "talking heads" three-panel newspaper comics strip. Or there are panels splits, which are usually used when you try to capture movement in the same scene. Except there is no movement. The scene is, with no obvious reason, split to 2+ panels.
I could go on and on. The graphic part of this comics is simply bad. Together with experience from Elvis, I must say: Fabrice Le Henanff can't do a comics and the results of his tryings are just terrible.

Kresba ponurá a vystihující. A celé velmi velmi mrazivé.
