At the end of the world, the zombies are not the scariest monsters. Something evil and vile now hides among the sheep seeking to devour its very heart. Pastor Mike Brown and his wife, Lauren, are loved by the congregation of the church that rose from the ashes of the zombie apocalypse. But a dark secret, if discovered, could destroy everything. As Guntersville Island’s fledgling government attempts to solve the mystery of a growing number of missing children, it must ask some hard questions about the messianic leader. Meanwhile, on the Viva Ancora, Mo, Smokes, and the remainder of the main protagonists continue their trip toward the sea in search of a possible cure. Meeting new friends and foes along the way is, of course, a given: not to mention Mo’s constant complaining. Will evil win control of paradise? Who can stop its sadistic hunger? Do we need a Hero? Is that a pig? It’s the end of the world as we know it. Join us, friend. In places where the zombies bite.... fish bite.... life always bites.... and some people bite. Welcome to Zombie Perdition.
By the time you hit book 7 in most series, you just might be ready for the story to wrap up. Not with this series, it continues to get better. As the characters grow, the story line deepens and the Blunatics get wild, Javan keeps us entertained and wan ting more. Tons of WTF moments and lots of action await you with book 7. Now bring on book 8!!!
I happily dived back into this series, having enjoyed the previous books in the series. But this one was a little different from the previous books. First, there’s very little of Mo and Smokes and Crow (my favorite characters). Instead we follow Mo’s cousin, Benjamin, the pilot. Second, the book has a more serious tone. There’s still some pop culture references but a lot less than the previous books. It feels more horror and less comedy.
Benjamin is a decent character. He feels like a well-rounded action hero. I’d pick him for my dodge ball team. He doesn’t have the goofiness of the Viva Ancora crew though. While his girlfriend does kick some butt while in a superhero outfit, I found her California Valley Girl accent annoying.
Really, I simply missed the old crew.
Meanwhile, there is some stuff happening back on Guntersville Island with the Pastor Mike Brown. He and his wife are about as evil as they get. There’s cannibalism to be dealt with. At the end of the previous book, we had one character who was looking into the missing kids and he had found a solid lead. Well, this book confirms that he did indeed meet his end for good. No way out of it. And I was sad to see that character gone too.
Anyhoo, there’s lots of action and gooey zombie slaying. Quite messy. While there’s less humor in this story than previous books, what humor there is is mostly poop jokes and political humor. I wanted to laugh and enjoy the clever satire I found amusing in previous books, but that was missing with this story. Poop jokes just aren’t that funny and I use my books as an escape from current affairs and politics so the last thing I want to bump into is a bunch of political jokes. In short, most of the humor didn’t work for me.
All around, it wasn’t what I was expecting. It’s not bad, but I had certain expectations based on the previous books in the series. I went into it wanting one thing and instead got it’s more serious, less fun cousin. 3.5/5 stars.
The Narration: S. W. Salzman gives a solid performance, as usual. I liked his voice for Benjamin, which sounded well grounded and used to making the tough decisions. His Valley Girl voice was spot on, even if I found the character a bit annoying. I was surprised that he didn’t have much of n accent (or any?) for Akata (the engineer from Zimbabwe and EZ Collins’s girlfriend). Salzman had unique voices for all the characters and his female voices were feminine. The pacing was good and there were no technical issues with the recording. 4.5/5 stars.
I received a free copy of this book. My opinions are 100% my own.
No matter how twisted they may be called, a select few can be captivated by nearly anything." I am proud to say that I am one of the select few!
This book continues the saga of a group of survivors after an event that is turning people into bluenatics, zombie-like reanimated dead with blue skin. As with the previous six books, the author has created a great group of characters who continue to entertain readers of all ages. It is a typical zompoc book in a lot of ways, complete with villains who want to rule the world, cannibals who don't care who they eat, and plenty of blood and gore.
But, this series is also very, very different in a lot of ways. "Perhaps everything is set to a script." Some of the characters are beginning to wonder if their lives are just part of a screenplay and they have no control of their destiny.
I love the way that Mr. Bonds incorporates pop culture references throughout his books, with his main characters wearing the costumes of such characters as Indiana Jones, Star Wars Clone Troopers, Robocop, and various others from Star Trek and Marvel comics.
There are laugh out loud moments in this book (as with all of the books in this series), so I would advise that it is NSFW. However, if the idea of a peevie (another term for the zombies) getting tangled up in the strings of a tarp and then proceeding to stand up and try to walk, all while being described as an olive colored burrito gives you a laugh, this series would be a good fit for you!
Definitely not politically correct in any way, this is a thoroughly entertaining book that will keep you laughing throughout. And, Mr. Bonds is still the champion at writing very descriptive, unique and gruesome scenes for the death of his minor characters. I look forward to the further adventures of this great cast of misfits as they try to survive the Zompoc.
this is an entertaining and action packed journey through a weird zombie apocalypse
This is an action packed and entertaining journey through an odd and weird zombie apocalypse. A unique and fun cast of characters with a strange and unique storyline. The zombie apocalypse has happened. It’s a bit different here as once bitten people turn blue strip naked and run around biting other people. If you’re bitten you will die then reanimate turn blue and attack your fellow citizens. You also have explosive diarrhea all the time From eating each other. Although the zombies are technically alive again as they have pumping hearts that pumps blood in their bodies and they breathe and they see. Yet if you want them Morley then it will die. If zombies attack you and you are Morley wounded in the process then you will not reanimate. The story surrounds a group of adventurers led by Moe who is a Alabama resident living on a replica pirate ship selling up and down the rivers in the coast giving tours as his job with his crew mates. They just have to work your way back up the river to the town in Alabama where he lives. Find his parents and some friends and they secure a portion of a town on an island take out the bridges and start looking for survivors. As the town grows there are a lot of things going on. The whole story is based on the scenario of kind of like an RPG game. Where there is a screen writer determining what happens and who all the characters are and what they are. Mo is the hero his brother is the protector One of the first people he found in the town who is a gentleman who is considered the Oracle and an old retired Marine captain who owned a pawn shop and she has become the armorer or the warrior. She’s a bad ass. As with any apocalypse story there’s always The zombies and then there are the despicable humans that always try to take advantage of everything and everyone possible. Read on and follow the adventures of Moe and his fellow ventures as they take another run on the ship down the river as well as the adventures of his family and friends in the town as they try and survive And fight back to Rowen adversaries trying to invade the town in Cozzi she’s there. This book 7 is one of the longest so far hit almost 600 pages. The story is action packed entertaining humorous at times and outright silly at others but serious most of the time. Read on and enjoy.
Javan Bonds does it again! Zombie Perdition, the seventh book in Still Alive series, is cleverly-written, twisted, and wholly satisfying. The series is actually quite dark, the humor allows the audience to find comedy relief in horrific scenes. The Peevies are ruthless than ever, semi-intelligent, and able to utilize weapons, killing them is becoming even more difficult. The survivors fall and die in the goriest ways possible, either in the hands of blue-lunatics or other humans.
A lot happens in this volume, the Black Hand Gang, Man of God, Wolf Cult, faithful sheep, loads of action, vinegar spillage, penile castration, blood, and plenty of gore. The mystery of the missing children being investigated and Brother Mike Brown is still plotting to take over the town. The blind loyalty of his faithful followers goes to the very extreme. Mo's crew meet a new group of hillbilly survivors, cannibals who love to grill Peevies and enjoy good PV steak.
With a sadistic screenwriter overseeing and manipulating events, proves no one is safe. Doubts even creep into Mo's mind, wondering if the clock is ticking. The suspense and the anticipation are marvelously composed; you never know what's next, keeping you on the very edge of your seat. The twist at the end is insanely good, and I can't wait for book eight.
S. W. Salzman did a phenomenal job with the characters and their accents. His inflections and timing were all spot-on, bringing the story to life. All around, Zombie Perdition was a fantastic listen with outstanding narration, one I highly recommend.
Bonds continue to churn out excellent books in the Still Alive series and the narration by S.W. Salzman for the series is excellent. I've thoroughly enjoyed the series and while not every book of the series has been my favorite, Zombie Perdition hits a home run. Zombie Perdition is full of the gratuitous violence, gore, and humor that you'll come to love as part of the series, but also contains new characters and storylines which I really enjoyed. If you are a fan of Mo's journal, you'll be happy to hear that Zombie Perdition has a few entries that continue to chronicle the mission of the Viva Ancora while also introducing a few new groups of survivors and additional story arcs (I really hope to see the benevolent hillbilly cannibals make an appearance in the next book). I really can't find much fault with the book. I might say maybe it has too much pointless gore and violence but I'm pretty sure that IS the point. Which means it's actually a huge success in that department. If you are a fan of anything in the zombie / post-apocalyptic genre, you'll thoroughly enjoy this series.
Special thanks to Javan Bonds who provided me with this book at my request.
Mo, Easy and the crew of the Cora continue their slow journey downriver
Halfway through their journey to find the cure for the Zombie Plague, slowed by the interminable dams and locks on the river, they've reached the point of Easy's side trip to find football memorabilia. The crew will split and meet up later. Somewhere. Not to worry though. Remember: you're always where you're 'posed to be! Meanwhile, back at the ranch (or island community or whatever) Randy (Mo and Easy's father, the Mayor) are on to the depredations of the false preacher, Mike Brown. They know that he's behind the missing children, but not how he disposes of the bodies. They're about to uncover all his dark secrets, but only if they can survive the battle Father Mike has stirred up! Leading his flock of sheep into a battle to overthrow the establishment! It's hard at times to keep the cast straight, there's so many bit players coming and going, but count on Mo and Easy to be on top of it. Great characters, because the Screenwriter wills it so! Great storyline and great storytelling! This is a great read!
Just when you think you've heard Javan Bonds at his best, and darkest humour - he makes you snort tea through your nose laughing, I had a blast listening to S Salzman narrate Javan's humour, and navigate the devious twists and turns of this plot. I loved getting to know Benji & Devon, and the addition of Neil in his Boba Fett armour can only be entertaining, my one regret was there could have been more Mo and Smokes adventures! Hold on for another wild ride, its a killer!
Not as funny as some of the past books but a ton more action!m than the others! We are getting so much of all the different characters and story lines. The series just continues to be amazing!
Narration by Salzman is perfection!
I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review
This instalment wasn't my favourite in the series but it is still an excellent read. Plenty of fighting and gory zombie deaths, not enough of Mo and the Ancora crew for me. really looking forward to the next instalment. Javan has a really easy to read writing style, so just waiting for the next book to be released!
Javan Bonds has a great imagination. He’s still alive series has course language, violence, cannibalism, gore, blood and guts. All wrapped up in a comical tone. They are full of action.
S.W. Salamander narration gives each character their own unique voice and is well done. Bringing the story alive.
I cannot wait for the next book as I want to know what happens.
It's so gross and detailed! I love it!! And RoboCop!? Did not see that one coming, but considering the characters it completely made sense! Can't wait to see what happens next!!
This series is great and keeps getting better! I love the characters, the uniqueness of the zombies, the action, and humor! Looking forward to #8 and some more Mo and all his friends.
Love the humour in these books . The series is a tounge in cheek take on the zombie apocalypse and will make you laugh out loud . I have really enjoyed th story so far . Well worth reading .
Javan just makes this story better and better. I get more chuckles reading about Mo’s adventures. And what’s going on with the Preacher? Sicko!! You’re doing a bang up job with this series Javan. I can’t wait to start on number 8.
I love this book, but it's a bit hard to follow along at times, especially with the audiobook. There's too many characters pov going on each chapter seems to be someone new. MO is definitely taking a step back in this one.
Mo and the rest of his party plus new friends are on the Viva Ancora still looking for a cure that is said to be near the sea. Mo's cousin is on his own type of rescue mission with a helicopter made for many. While back in Guntersville AL, they are still looking for the missing children, and eating lots of meat and not of the fish variety, and how did the new pastor get all this meat? So guard yourself well because the blunatics might not be the worst thing coming for you.
Mr Bonds keeps his story going in this the 7th installment of the Still Alive Series, and I am still waiting for more. This action packed wonderful book has not lost its zing since the first book. While the story is still happening on different fronts I still find it exciting and new. The audio version narrated by the wonderful S W Salzman, allows you to lose yourself in the story, I love Mo and I bet Smokes is a site to behold, I feel as though I am there with them on the Viva Ancora in my Ironman best, helping them as much as possible. Really which ever form you get you won't be sorry the protagonists and peevies can have you laughing loudly. But be aware of the language there is quite a bit so if that bothers you this series isn't for you.
I've really enjoyed this series and will certainly enjoy it to the end. It's a zombie apocalypse and a bit of a comedy! The series has made me laugh all the way through until this book. This book still had some jokes but it took a more serious turn. I think it was needed at this point in the story, but I really enjoy the laughs that this series brings. Can't wait for the next book!
