It’s Saturday night and tearoom owner Jesse Camden is finally having her first real date with the hunky sheriff Joe Tyler—and it’s going great until a drunk blonde stirs up a fight on the dance floor that then continues into the parking lot and forces Joe into his role as sheriff.
Early the next morning one of the combatants is found dead in a local B&B, and Jesse is drawn into the mystery when the drunk blonde turns out to be young rock star and hometown darling Chrissy Blaze, who has close ties to half the Garden Club, including Jesse’s mother Sophia.
Soon, the investigation is awash with suspects, all with a reason to want the victim dead. Unfortunately, Chrissy quickly becomes suspect number one. And as old secrets and new rumors begin to swirl, Jesse struggles to separate fact from fiction, friend from foe, and victim from predator in a murder steeped in deception.
Once again, Jesse Camden falls into a mystery and lands on her feet. But, first, finally, she and Sheriff Joe get their real first date. Not pizza on her balcony, but a real dinner and dancing. Wow. Of course, something is going to mess it up. An altercation between a rock singer and the paparazzi. That sets off a string of events guaranteed to give Jesse and Joe something to talk about on the way home. When the singer's manager is found dead the next morning, Joe's got so many suspects it's hard to tell where to start. Plus, the singer's grandma is a good friend of Jesse's mom. Small town. Everybody knows everybody. Between the murder case, the suspects, the singer's secrets, and friendship with Grandma, Jesse's investigative nose begins to twitch. Fortunately, Joe has figured out Jesse is a great conduit to the community, someone people talk to. While she doesn't betray confidences, she shares what she knows that will help. Good to see that cooperation.
Again, memorable characters, distractions, red herrings, and a great small town setting makes this a great read.
This was the first book by Loulou Harrington that I have read. I prefer to read books from a series in order, so it was not ideal to start this series with book 6. However, I truly enjoyed reading this book. The story kept my interest, and I thought the budding romance between Joe and Jesse was interesting and kind of cute.
There were passing references to things that had occurred in earlier books, but nothing that would necessarily ruin the experience if I were to go back and start with book 1 in the series...and I think I will definitely have to do that!
If it hadn’t been for the end, I would have given three solid stars. I enjoyed Jesse working together with Joe to solve this new case and see them grow closer together as a couple. The case was a bit boring. Pretty obvious it had to be one of two people and sadly, that never changed, nor was there another surprise really along the way - or another murder. So the second half had quite a few lengths and the end was way too drawn out to then once again end very abruptly. And not too satisfying, at least not to me. But yeah, Jesse and Joe are a great team and I did read it more for them than the case.
This is the 6th in the series. The main characters are Jessie and Sheriff Joe.. They are out to dinner on a kind of date when they get mixed in fight . Sheriff Joe is never really off duty. They end up with Jessie taking the girl to her grandmother's house and Joe follow with the boyfriend/bodyguard. That same night the manager of the girl's is murdered but no one know by who or even why. Sheriff Joe with Jessie's help start to investigate. Can they figure this all out before it to late ?
I am so enjoying this new-to-me series! So many cozy mysteries I pick up have stilted dialogue, and the characters are either too ditzy or to unlikable for me to really get into - but the very opposite is true of the Myrtle Grove Garden Club characters. They are believable, and quickly begin to feel like old friends that you enjoy spending time with. Please keep the stories from this series coming, I am thoroughly enjoying them!
I enjoyed this book and its structure and verbiage even. Friends stood together even though quite varied ages. I would not have guessed the one who killed Arthur. There was more than expected disclosure from police. There was not conclusion about the role/outcome of Chrissy.
Another delightful who -done -it set in Myrtle Grove!
Love the well developed characters in this series and they did not disappoint in this story. I know this is a novel meant to be a fun read - which it is - but it also paints a wonderful picture of human caring and supportive, enjoyable relationships between people of widely varying ages, talents and backgrounds.
This is the first I've read in this series. Although it was clear there had to be a lot of backstory, it didn't detract from reading this as a stand alone. I like the "budding" relationship between Sheriff Joe and Jesse and the beautiful family values this seems to portray. A nice portrayal of small town America.
This is a mystery in a small town where solving a murder. Jesse, who solved other cases resolves to solve this one with her new boyfriend, Joe, who is from the City. I was totally blown away when it was reached a resolution because it ended completely different than what I thought!
I have read the first six stories and I loved them all. The characters are fun and very likable. The mysteries are good too and not easy to solve. Nice small town folks are found in Myrtle Grove!
I loved everything about this absolutely delightful thriller. Friendship, romance, suspense, humor. I enjoyed reading the twist in the tale with a surprise confession by Chrissy but culprit turning out to be someone unexpected.
There is so much involved in these murder mystery 's besides the victim. The surrounding characters are of mostly very kind souled people who make this story such a nice read.
The ladies of the Myrtle Grove Garden Club provide each other with unlimited support. This is the type of town and the type of people we would like to live in.
Wonder....this really was a cliff hanger! Never would have dreamed of who committed the murder this time! On to book seven and I believe its the final one in the series! What a shame!
I would recommend this book to the casual reader of light mysteries. just not as interesting as previous books in the series and couldn't get to care about the characters.
Another great entry in this series of books. Troubled local girl leaves town, makes it big and comes back home when she has more life problems. Seems that maybe everything is going to work out in the end. Looking forward to the next book in this series.
For a garden club mystery there is very little garden and loads of mystery
Hurtle Grove is usually a quie? t town. But this week it is invaded by rock stars. A former resident has come to town for her Mother,a funeral. Chrissy I is hoping to come to terms with her past.
I've enjoyed each story very much! I am confined to my bed right now and your stories MS Harrington have made the long days and longer nights go by faster. Thank you!
A young woman returns to her hometown after making it big as a rock star. However, the secrets she has kept as a young child have come back to haunt her. A murder occurs, but who actually did the act, is very blurry. So Sheriff Joe and Jesse team up to find out the full story, and it's a doosy!
Childhood trama doesn't go away, but manifests in surprising ways. We are all a patchwork of events, solutions, disappointment, and success. Just add love and watch life evolve around you. Did not expect this ending, too many lies and secrets.
Who killed Arthur Frye and why??? Are you sure??? The Patchwork teddy Bear Song really is sad, isn’t it??? I enjoyed this story and recommend the book.
This story kept you on your toes until the end. Lots of drama. Loved the flirting between Jesse and the sheriff. Couldn't believe the twist as to who the killer was!
