Two single dads. One accidental pregnancy. Many, many shifter children.
Sam’s mate died four years ago, and penguin shifters mate for life. Sam is never allowed to love again. Even when he meets a kind and beautiful omega who his three children gravitate towards.
After working with Lu for a year, Sam has fallen deeply in love with him. And Lu’s feelings for Sam are painfully obvious.
Caught between the desires of his heart, and the expectations of his culture, Sam must decide what he’s willing to pay to reclaim his own happiness.
A Mate for Lu is a sweet and angsty love story between two single dads. It has hurt/comfort, MPreg of the penguin egg variety, and cameos from characters in the first three Alaskan Pebble Gifters books. A Mate for Lu is book four in the series, and will only make sense if you’ve read the first three books.
In my opinion I think that this is the best book in the series so far! OMG I just ADORE Lu and Sam! This story had so many feels, humor and of course hot lovemaking! I also loved Lu's nest building! I am extremeely intrigued by the hints the author dropped in regards to omega magic and what Lu was able to do. I just can't wait for book 4 to be released!
I’m not a fan of single dad trope myself, but Sam and Lu’s introduction in book 3 made me pick this up. SamLu story is definitely the most insta I’ve ever read from Bellows. It started with them already pining over each other and have sex after a few chapters. However, the pining was still there since Sam was confused as heck with committing after his mate’s death. And the story starts there. All of those guilty moments in the beginning manage to make me tear up.
The dead boyfriend/mate is one of my firsts favourite trope, so I was really looking forward to this, and of course I’m being super stingy about it that was why this has a lower rating 😂 you know, high expectations and all.
In the previous book, Lu appeared more soft and sensitive so I was hoping that part of him was more showing in this one. Probably shouldn’t have expected a lot from just their introductions.
I have to say the plot in this one was quite plain for me compared to the others. This whole series is low angst, so I wouldn’t expect plot to be interesting, but it worked with the previous book. I couldn’t find any plot-flaw in the others, but in this one yes. Smooth, but plain. Sex-kids-sex-kids-sex-somecutemoments-kids-sex 😬😬 Maybe that’s why I don’t like the single dads trope, too many kids involved. Not that I hate kids (I do sometimes when they’re bitchy and whiny AF) but I just hoped their story revolve around something else.
I really don’t like the “keeping each other in secret.” trope although, I do get their reasoning. However, Sam’s denials and his way of making Lu feel guilty about the dead husband wasn’t helping.
Wow that was a lot of things I didn’t like, but yeah, seeing how it’s only 3 ⭐️ and how I didn’t care too much about SamLu. LOL It was still and easy read, and I’m still loving Bellows books. My expectations were definitely different for this 😬 Anyway, I like the variety in this series. I have read fluffy, kinky and now super vanilla sooo yeah, a win is a win !! 😂😂
P.S. In all of the premises in this series said that the books should have been read in order but I skipped book #2 and I’m doing perfectly fine. Not missing anything so much. So, it’s fine to skipping I guess ;)
Same as before, i think sam took a little too long to get his head out of his ass. he was too caught up in what everyone would think that he didn't see he was hurting the people he loves.
Overall not my favorite of the series, but i am glad that Lu got his HEA.
3-3.5 stars: October 2022
took me a while to like sam, but after he got his head out of his penguin ass he was great for lu haha. i didn't fully remember all the characters that popped up in here, but i remembered enough.
also compared to the other books in this series, this wasn't my favorite, i did like seeing Cy, Axel and Ben again!
i can't wait to continue this series, it is cute, i hope that liam gets his own book.. maybe..?
Lu is a single Polar Bear shifter and has his little girl, Mary. Sam, 33, has 3 kids, is single, an Emperor penguin. Penguins mate for life, but the loneliness is devastating, since his husband died years ago. Can’t he and his kids have a new start with hope and love in their lives? There is Jesse’s gender reveal coming up as Lu and Sam get feelings for each other. They have tried being friends and taking care of the kids. But, Lu gets pregnant. This is cute, tender, fun, sexy and warm-hearted. You do need to read the other Pebble Gifter stories or you will be lost. It’s entertaining, terrific nesting scenes, and an HEA. There will be more stories... but it’s not a cliffhanger. Mpreg, shifters. ENJOY !
SO SWEET!!! It was everything I was hoping for and more!! The searing tension of a taboo attraction coupled with the cuteness of two single dads and their adorable kids. The pain of loneliness and mourning. The gut-busting humor that IS penguin shifter nesting. And furthermore we are left with promises of secret magical scandal, sweet handkerchief love on the Slope, scorpion shifters, and sex swings!!! Cy was badass in this book, that just had to be said. The omega deserves the cred. I love the Pebble Gifter Universe!!!!!!!
“The thing about traditions is that if people never challenge them, they never change.”
This series as a whole is getting better with every book as more secrets get discovered. Lu is a precious angel who deserves all the love. But Sam? He pissed me off for so much of the book. Suggesting a secret relationship and then constantly focusing on sex. Thank god Ed smacked some sense into him!!! He shouldn’t have needed that conversation imo but he did step up after he was called out for bad behaviour. I liked the book well enough but Sam lowkey sucked so 3⭐️
Here is a story where the pregnancy happens quite suddenly but it’s like… not because they’ve somehow decided they’re ready to make a family. It’s a fun plot device. I’m here for it.
I loved the secret-mate plot of this one. There was ANY tension at all that made the climax satisfying (unlike the other books in this series). I liked both the characters and I enjoyed watching them struggle.
OOOH YES and the trans rep!!! Yes please trans-secondary-gender!!!
I like how the author still has more polar bear/penguin culture to impart to us after all these books. The world keeps getting deeper and deeper!
I looooved that these characters shifted so much. Finally, shifters that shift!! Don’t be embarrassed that you’re making penguins fall in love with polar bears, it’s cute and weird and we’re all into it!
I will say though, the thing where the author spends zero time giving any context for the characters we’ve theoretically already met in previous books or their relationships to the main characters got very confusing and annoying. It would have taken like, one sentence to remind the reader that Axel was Lu’s brother. But she just name-dropped Axel like we’ve all just been binging these books and remember everyone’s name perfectly. It’s been several books, yes, I’ve forgotten who Todd is, okay?? Could you at least give me a description, or a word or two about how these characters know each other?? I know it’s partially my fault for dnf-ing book 3 but it didn’t have to be so intensely confusing, one or two extra words would have served to explain who the fuck Scooch was. Literally just say, Ben’s turtle, Scooch… TWO EXTRA WORDS. It’s not that hard!! My memory isn’t that great! Even if I had read book 3 I don’t know that I would have perfectly retained everyone’s name. I had to really search my brain to remember who Daniel was, and I never found out how he knew Lu (or Sam… whoever it was he knew).
This is going to be another short review. Lu was sweet and felt so bad for him in the beginning. Sam annoyed me because he couldn’t commit and was breaking poor Lu’s heart. The kids were cute and it was fun to see the characters from previous books. The sexy time were fun and hot as always. There is some new magic going on ( fun!!) and Ed was hilarious. All in all it was a good book but Sam brought down the rating for me 🤷🏽♀️. I will definitely be reading more Mpreg books!!!
This is a wonderful series of books and I love how Amy Bellows created this world and adds more depth and detail the it with every book.I I find it so enjoyable to catch up with characters from.previous books and really like how their stories are so brilliantly interwoven. A mate for Lu was another amazing read, it's sweet, lovely and really quite beautiful. I had a little cry, laughed and adored Sam and Lu. I also loved the children in this story, Jesse especially.
🐧 Single Dads 🐻❄️ Widower 🐧 Alpha/Omega 🐻❄️ Penguin/Polar Bear Shifters 🐧 Friends to Lovers
🖤 No breakup 🩶 OM drama: widower has trouble moving on 🤍 Strict
This could’ve been so sweet, but I was annoyed by how the widower treated his new partner. It’s nice that eventually they got past the hurdles, but it annoyed me.
I was weary of this one based on what we had seen of Sam in the previous book, but I shouldn't have been concerned. Lu is a complete sweetheart that gets exactly the kind of (good) man he deserves. And we get more magical lore, which I very much adore
This was better than I expected. I will admit that I was a little hesitant in the first couple of chapters because I didn't like the secret premise, so I am glad that didn't last.
Sam and Lu were perfect together. Two single dads reaching out and grabbing their chance at happiness.
I loved seeing all the previous characters and I loved that the kids played a big part of the story.
Not many stories make me cry within the first few pages but this one sure did and kept pulling at my heartstring throughout this whole thing. Poor Lu has never had someone who wanted to stay or this he was worth the effort and unfortunately Sam’s penguin shifter customs make that a reality. I was glad that Sam was able to see that their love would be worth it and their families blended together beautifully. What Lu was able to do for Liam was so much and I am interested to see how this all continues to play out in more books.
I received a copy of this book and am giving an honest review.
I loved this book as much as I loved the rest of the series. Amy Bellows has created such a fascinating and intriguing world of shifters with this series, and each book brings up new issues that have you thinking. This one was the delicate way a widower has to navigate their way around a second mate that is normally forbidden to them. I loved Sam and Lu.
I very much enjoyed this book and recommend giving it a try. It is the 4th book in the series. You do not have to have read the other books to enjoy this one. It is incredibly sweet (just a small amount of angst, the best kind) Lu and Sam are a great couple and I am glad they found each other.
Lu is a single dad Omega Polar bear shifter who has so much love to give but has had his heart broken so often that he doesn't feel as if anyone will find his love enough. He is struggling to make ends meet and is doing what he can to support his daughter
Sam is a widower Alpha Penguin shifter. He is rocking a dad bod (he's got a tummy!) and has three children. He is a wonderful dad and he is lonely (his mate died 4 years before), but in Penguin culture penguins are mates for life and are not supposed to find another mate if one passes. Sam is worried if he breaks tradition then it will effect his children and their future. (Some penguins are kind of judgy)
Sam's oldest, Jesse, is 12 and they are figuring things out entering puberty. The relationship between them and their dad is very sweet and well written.
This story is about two adults with experience finding love and making things work.
The best thing about an Amy Meadows novel is that all the characters feel whole and unique. I end up wanting a story about everyone we meet. (Luckily most have a story in the other books) I love the world building, I really get a sense of the people and their different cultures. There are hints of other places and shifters. Each book adds to the world which makes me want to learn more.
This is definitely a keeper and I will be rereading it. If you have not read her other books check them out.
I got an advanced reader Copy (Patron) but I have also paid for the book (my pre-order is waiting).
A Mate For Lu is one of the sweetest books ever. The fourth book in Amy Bellows' Alaskan Pebble Gifters series, it is addicting!
With a penguin shifter and a polar bear shifter falling in love, this story is full of love and tenderness. It's a heartfelt read with a forbidden relationship. Penguin shifters mate for life, even after death, but Sam can't resist Lu. Sam loves his mate, but he loves Lu too. Omg. Swoon.
Everything that follows is tender and beautiful. Also so damn sad. I love this book. I love these men. And I love their shifter traditions. And the shifter sex, swoon. And oh my...the fish sharing, the pebble rituals, eggs, and nesting!
Their story is full of secrets and lies, and love. It's a story of sexual confusion, fears, and doubts. And so much love!
I am absolutely in love with this world of shifters that the author created. It is all extraordinary. Everything about this world is special and makes me happy. I adore the differences between the polar bear and penguin cultures.
The author's writing is wonderful. The characters are all intriguing and lovable. The storyline is fabulous; both compelling and heart felt. She also delves into transgender shifters, which is a fascinating aspect of this tale.
A Mate For Lu is sugary sweet and is one of my favorite books. Set some time aside for this stellar Amy Bellows shifter read. You won't regret it.
This is gorgeously, apropos , current , fun and sexy written , intimate and personal feeling story . It filled my heart and soul , with a sense of happiness, well-being and peace.
A Paranormal, Mpreg, Shifter, MM, Romance tale about love, about acceptance and about understanding of oneself and of others. About the practical, emotional and mental support we give and share with our friends, family and strangers alike.
A Mate for Lu is Book 4 , in the Alaskan Pebble Gifters series ; it could be read as standalone. However, I suggest to read all books in chronological order as they're all awesome stories . The world building , mythology and folklore Ms. Bellows has created for her series is truly one of the kind for it's richness , detailing and unique content. It shouldn't be missed.
I so love how this series is unfolding. There are cameos by other MCs in the previous books. There's an overarching plotline that shows up to tie everything together. THERE'S ADORABLE NESTING MOMENTS. A teeny tiny mystery plot surrounding magic.
Two single dads, both with some sad vibes. More exploration into the culture differences between penguin and polar bear shifters, nesting with clothes and writing/drawing wishes out for the babby. So stinking cute.
I also adored the plotline for the 13 year old kiddo who's going through their gender reveal and identity discovery. Loved loved loved including a trans kid into the plotline, and how the MC's love and support their kid's decisions and feelings towards the matter. LOVE IT.
I love this series so much, so I’m disappointed I didn’t like this one. It’s nothing about the writing itself, it’s just the trope of continuous self-flagellation while doing the thing you want that turns me off. More so because it’s insta-love in this one, unlike insta-lust you saw in the others.
Sam, in particular, ends up being a selfish shithead because with Lu, he’s not the one holding back despite his history of being used and cast aside by selfish boyfriends. I get that Sam is struggling with an aspect of his culture and his grief, but he himself is a selfish prick. Lu has every right to be upset and I see Sam and his offer as very cruel, making Lu essentially a dirty little secret. He’s not willing to work through his own trauma but wants his cake and eat it too.
Another achingly poignant read from Amy Bellows!! ‘A Mate for Lu’ is beautifully developed, painstakingly written, and well edited. Bellows once again challenges restrictive traditions and beliefs of a specific society, that can easily be translated to everyday life.
This newest installment of the Alaskan Pebble Gifters is {slightly} angsty, sweet, steamy, and humorous. Absolutely beautiful. 🖤 I fell for Lu in ‘A Home for Ben’ and eagerly anticipated his story. Bellows didn’t NOT disappoint!! This story has complex characters and revisits quite a few former MCs, without overloading the reader. We were also introduced to some “new” magic that simply must be explored in following stories!!
This series was such a delight! I started the first one thinking it was a standalone, but then realized 8 other couples were just waiting for me to discover them!
These books are everything it promises and more. It's fun, flirty and super sexy. But it also has great world building, and character growth.
Throughout the series we navigate serious themes like found family, not fitting in, sex work, dysfunctional families/religion, prison and its ethicality, etc.
It's no surprise that I adored how the author explored the themes of nest/nesting. Those scenes were as adorable as they were hilarious.
Here are my favourites aka the ones I cried: A home for Ben, A mate for Lu, A nest for Eli.
4.5 stars! I don’t know why I waited so long to read this one (stupid life getting in the way), but I’m so glad I finally got around to it because it’s everything I could’ve hoped for and more. The beginning was kind of heartbreaking (and yeah, my big ole softie heart made me cry a couple times), but it honestly just made the HEA all the more sweeter because of it. I loved Lu and Sam and the family they made together. The nesting scene, as always, was hilarious, sweet, and steamy all at once. I love the magical world building going on in the background, and just enjoy every part of this world Bellows has created.
This story started sad. Lu is struggling with his young daughter and his friend Sam is a widower who lost his partner 4 years ago and as a penguin shifter the belief is that they mate for life. So when the 2 start to feel something developing between them, its hard for both. However, times do turn happy as they are able to move past their issues and blend their families. Sweet read.
Ok, so rereading this one was hard as its my least liked one of the bunch. Not that its bad but there's a lot of stuff that literally could have been resolved with a real conversation.
Anyways, in here we have Lu, omega polar bear shifter, who was abandoned by his alpha. He is the brother of Axel from the previous book. And Sam, a widowed penguin shifter who has three kids of his own.
These two fall for each other but Sam belonged to a community that did not allow for more than one mate, while Lu had no self esteem.
Eventually they get together, get preggers, and nest.
Oh and Lu finds out he has special powers. Which shouldn't be possible unless someone in control hid it from everyone.
But the true star of the book was Ed. He deserves happiness as well.
