What’s more fun than dragging a politician, an ogre, a leprechaun, and a hired killer across the wastelands to retrieve a human passenger? Anything. Anything would be more enjoyable than this—even hunting hungry fiends.
Sam is questioning their life choices. Maybe it would just be easier to murder the idiots and leave the bodies in the wastelands.
But, growl as Sam might, everyone knows the hunter will do the right thing. And helping the idealistic human sovereign move his family member and closest advisor from Golding to Westhold is the right thing to do.
Too bad the raiders, hyena beasts, and giant death worms don’t seem to think so….
Tension grows, emotions run high, and heads roll…uh, literally…as Sam takes one more step away from their solitary life and toward actually caring about people—or terrifying monsters, whatever.
Author’s Note:
I love reverse harem, but I got sick of reading the same old tropes. In my books you will find atypical characters and varied sexuality. In general, you probably won’t find many alpha males or fainting females, and relationships may have a more poly feel.
The Not Quite series is a harem/reverse harem urban fantasy series of novellas (between 35,000-45,000 words) and contains the following:
*adult language, and lots of it
*moderate levels of violence/gore/action
*graphic sexual situations
*polyamory/ multiple lovers
*LBGTQ and straight themes (the main character is intersex and will have both male and female lovers, and this is a harem, so expect M/F, M/M, F/F, MMMFF etc.)
*as usual, my characters all have their own emotional scars. This means the books MAY contain mentions of abuse, unpleasant situations, etc. Please do not read if you are triggered by things like this. This book in particular has several mentions and flashbacks to past abuse.
*occasional “cliff-hangers” or lead-ins to the next book may occur, though generally at least one major plot arc shows completion or at the very least, forward progress.
*word count does not include teaser chapters or other fluff material at the end.
Sometimes our greatest strengths come from our deepest challenges. I write magic and romance, starring a cast of creatures with feathers, fins, and teeth. My books include paranormal romance, urban fantasy, and fantasy romance--with the occasional steampunk or alien story thrown in just for kicks. My pan heart firmly believes love is love, so you'll see straight, LGBTQIA, monogamous, reverse harem, and poly relationships in my work. My favorite theme is overcoming our inner demons and the insecurities that hold us back. I also advocate for self-development and mental health and dabble in non-fiction as time allows. I love the outdoors and still hope to be abducted by fae! (I may have more in common with my characters than I care to admit.)
I love to hear from readers!

Plenty of things happened in this installment to the Not Quite series, but in the end, nothing changed. I didn’t see much character development, and though Sam had a sexy interlude with a new character, nothing about the conclusion hinted that there might be more to the relationship.
I got the feeling that Draper doesn’t quite know where she’s going with any of Sam’s potential relationships beyond this point, so we were instead treated to a filler adventure that shows off more of the greater world. It was enjoyable, and I was certainly not bored, but I wanted overarching plot rather than monster-of-the-week episode in this tale.
Fans of the series certainly shouldn’t give up here. I’m not, and I’m anxiously awaiting the next installment of this unique post-apocalyptic world.
I just finished this book in 3hrs. Lol and that's not to say the book it short I just read fast and really wanted to know what happened. I read a ton but Sam is definitely one of my favorite characters.
While a bit disappointed that the book didn't really push the story too much forward it was great. I really enjoy the characters and am interested in seeing where this is headed.
Since I don't normally write reviews unless I have something specific to say, here's the break down of how I rate my books...
1 star... This book was bad, so bad I may have given up and skipped to the end. I will avoid this author like the plague in the future.
2 stars... This book was not very good, and I won't be reading any more from the author.
3 stars... This book was ok, but I won't go out of my way to read more, But if I find another book by the author for under a dollar I'd pick it up.
4 stars... I really enjoyed this book and will definitely be on the look out to pick up more from the series/author.
5 stars... I loved this book! It has earned a permanent home in my collection and I'll be picking up the rest of the series and other books from the author ASAP.
Kaye Draper's characters are always so real and messy and relateable in a way that transcends genre and trope and hits you right in the gut. It may be that I see so much of myself in Sam that I find myself saying, "I remember exactly what that emotion feels like". It's funny how human these 'not remotely human' characters really are.
I think that this is my favorite of her series to date. It is a must read.
I just adore the world and characters! And Sam...oh, they are my favorite MC ever. They are the perfect mix of m/f. And the interactions in the story are just perfect.
Awesome as usual! Sam just keeps begrudgingly evolving and this time finally accepted that their ogre loved them. I can’t wait to see how it continues to play out with Angel and Theo in the next!
Sam's new friend has offer them and the guild a job which they take reluctantly. Sam is also trying to figure out their relationship with their two guildmates. There new friends are also enjoying them on this adventure and things get interesting.
Sam needs to just listen for once. They automatically think everything is out to get them. It doesn't help how it is almost true. Still, he should realize that there are good people out there too.
I thought the plot was fine but I am getting tired of the, honestly, juvenile dialogue, the repetitive nature of the curses, inappropriate humour and the blurred lines of any relationship Sam is involved in.
I have never read a book with this type of charater in it. I was hooked from the start straight into the action. Can't wait for the next book. Love you work Kaye
Theo manages to convince Sam and their guild to venture across the Wastelands, to the next city and back, in order to pick up his cousin. They reluctantly allow him to come with them and they also take the unsanctioned hunter, that helped them in the last book, as a kind of trial run for if they decide to invite her to join the guild.
This book has a few changes in POV which I liked as it allowed us to see Sam from the outside. However, I wish the author would give a heads up at the start of the change in POV, as it always seems to take me almost a full paragraph to understand what’s going on.
Sam reveals more of themself during this book to their companions and this slow unveiling of their character is very enjoyable. As a reader it feels like I’ve earned their trust by sticking with the series.
As in the previous books this has a good balance of action and adventure, plot progression, world building and character exploration. It’s hard to work all that into a shorter book, but, because it’s a series, the author manages it well. I hope the next book comes out soon!
