Red Angel #3

Hijackers

Rate this book
Anna's nice comfortable world is in turmoil. Because of their success in destroying the foreign Raiders, Anna, Kris, and Adrian were promoted to full commander, and the project team disbanded. Kris and Adrian were given NIA offices to manage on Stone Ring and Westar, and Anna is being pressured to move to Eastar to manage the NIA station. That would mean she would have to move away from home and Alexa, who Anna considers her refuge. In addition, she would be exposed to new people whose reactions to her are always unpredictable because of Anna’s red-headed krait and her young age. Probably worst of all, she would have responsibility for managing a NIA office when she has no management experience. And being the youngest commander in the Navy will inevitably cause resentment.

While trying to adjust to her new challenges, Anna discovers two potential perils that threaten the security of the United Alliance of Stars empire. Separately, they are each as dangerous as the Raiders were. Together, they not only threatened the fabric of the empire, but they are exponentially more dangerous to Anna—the bloodhound who discovered the threats and is doggedly pursuing them. If she is to survive, she will require help from her Red Angel.

I was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois, and joined the military right out of high school. I served twenty-two years in the United States Air Force as a certified internal auditor. While in the military service, I lived in seven states and two foreign countries, and obtained two degrees: a BS in mathematics and an MS in computer science.

After I retired from the Air Force, I secured a position with Digital Equipment Corporation, located in Bedford, Massachusetts, as a software course developer and instructor. I worked twenty-two years at DEC and held positions as a course developer, course development manager, software engineer, and software engineering manager.

Today, I’m retired and live in Tucson, Arizona, with my wife of fifty-three years. My daughter and two grandchildren live in Maryland. I began writing several years after I retired, when I was seventy. My first two attempts remain in my desk drawer—good ideas, but poorly written. Subsequently, I co-authored, with Jeanne Tomlin, three fantasy novels: Talon of the Raptor Clan, Scales of Justice, and All My Friends Have Wings (young adults). Talon of the Raptor Clan was sold to ePress-online Books and came out in July 2009. Since then I have written two additional novels: The Laughing Hounds (urban fantasy) and The Riss Gamble (science fiction).

My hobbies for the past forty years have been kung fu and tai chi.

Things I like about this book (series): Likable main character. The overall premise. Setting. The unique symbiotic relationship with Red. The focus on mutual respect and love in platonic female relationships. Solving puzzles.

Things that made me stop the series here: This is basically the same story rehashed for a third time. The main is too perfect. Beyond what can reasonably be explained away. She's smarter, wiser, and morally superior to everyone in the galaxy apparently. Commanders with decades on her can't see obvious traps or make basic battle plans without her. Besides racking up purple hearts and a rapid rise in the ranks, there is zero character development in this story.

I think the last straw for me wasn't the horrific r*pe sequence itself (I actually really liked the scene directly following, when she goes all 4 horsemen on the ship.) But the way it's treated immediately afterwards. She keeps using the same (bad) joke to describe what happened every time she is addressing a new group of people. This is not an awkward conference mixer. The joke wasn't good the first time. Repeating it over and over just seemed gross. I get dealing with difficult things through humor. But this was more like flippancy.

I really enjoyed this book, as I have every other book I have read by this author. The story is fairly simple, but there are enough twists to make it interesting and the heroine is a compelling mixture of fragility with a ruthless decisiveness when necessary.
The author surprised me with the severity of the kidnapping, but it did add a bit of ‘grit’ to the story and stopped it being too easy for Anna.

There are a couple of very minor criticisms, at times it can be a bit too sweet and sentimental and I really didn’t understand the damage done when the FPU’s cruisers self-destructed. However, this didn’t effect my enjoyment of the book and I am really looking forward to the next one in the series.

Waited a long time for this sequel

And it was worth the wait. It definitely had some gritty parts and readers should read the book description. I look forward to the next book which hopefully will be written quicker than this one. There a number of word issues but they didn't detract from the book.

Another great book

I have fall in love with this series. Anna is the type of character that enjoy reading about. An underdog, who has too work hard to overcome their weaknesses. A person who may at times feel sorry for their situation but excepts the fact they must answer the call or quit. Looking for the next book from the author is any of his series.

Interesting continuing Sci fi fantasy saga about Anna and her symbiotic snake. This story continues to follow her career as an intelligence agent on a fast track. She has new personal challenges while she hunts two new groups of bad guys. No new revelations about Red. Her old team is split due to promotions. Anna is in a leadership role. She is still the target of assassination and thieves. Story is told from Anna's POV. Next book has her jumping from commander to rear admiral. Which seems out there even for this genre.

Thrilling Sci-fi read.

Really enjoyed this series. I love Anna as a character and her ever faithful pet, Red. The characters are well written and the story thrilling. This book was a little hard to read due to torture that the main character goes thru and her recovery wasn't too realistic. Grammar needs a little editing but all in all I enjoyed the story. I hope the next book in the series takes us down different avenues so it doesn't repeat the same themes.

Really good

Ok, I really, really liked this one. I couldn't put it down and I'm looking forward to the next one in this series. C R Daems is another on my list of favorite authors who don't write fast enough to satisfy my reading appetite.

Outstanding!

Absolutely one of the best books I have read, ever. Could not put it down until I finished. Anna and Red are once again in the thick of tracking down murderers and thieves. Worthy addition to this series.

I have always loved this series! This is the third or fourth time I've read all three in order. There is something about reading another's plight and having the courage afterward to continue on. Thank Mr. Daems for sharing your gift with us, your readers. I look forward to more to come!

Excellent

Man, she is progressing thr9the ranks like greased lightning. I enjo9this book, but felt it lacked a little of the suspense and drama of the previous story. But having said that that I'm looking forward to the next one.

The author decided to change things and make the main character develop a bit.

The bad guys are much more evil in this volume and that makes the story more fun. This volume has a little more action and a little less puzzle, and I liked that a lot.

A fun read.

Space Navy criminal investigation

Our heroine and her snake Red lead investigation into criminal organization staffed by marines. More medals and horrible memories. Very good.

A bit less satisfying than the first two. Copy editing much poorer, notably in use of quote marks. Rushed? Darker, and protagonist’s coping seems a bit too easy. Still good, just a bit weaker.

C.R. Daems is a fun read.

The book wasn't something new, basically the same character. If you enjoyed yhe previous books, you will get the same fun read.

This is a fast paced action series with a great MC in the traditional C.R Daems style. I have now finished book 5 so will give a full review on book 5.

In the first two books the MC is wounded more than once, but otherwise it's a pretty chill, light read. Then in the third book the MC is gang-raped by a rough estimate of 200 odd pirates who then melts from the plague she carries.

Don't really think I need to write more than that -.-'

I love the book

I've read the series and enjoyed the ups and downs of the characters... So far the series has not let me down. I strongly recommend reading the series from book one to get all the references but either way it can be read without the previous books since most of those references are lightly mentioned when needed.
