Kincaid Pack #2

The Second and His Bonded

Rate this book
As the son of an enemy, Kieran never expected to find a family with the Kincaid Pack... or a true mate’s bond.

After barely escaping his abusive family, wolf shifter Kieran McAllister struggles to find his place in the Kincaid Pack. Especially with the pushy but gorgeous second-in-command showing up every time Kieran turns around… and making him want things he shouldn’t.

The traumatized wolf who continuously refuses Bennett Young’s help has begun to haunt his dreams. But if there’s one thing he knows, it’s that tiger shifters don’t have mates. So why can’t Bennett get Kieran’s sad eyes out of his head?

Despite their differences, Kieran and Bennet find something they never expected in each other. Just as their bond begins to grow though, Kieran's past threatens to destroy the very pack they both have been fighting to protect.

The Second and His Bonded is the second book in the Kincaid Pack series and features an overprotective tiger, a touch-starved wolf, lots of purring, an excessive amount of sunbathing, and a happily ever after.

I actually liked this a little more than the first book because the "big strong alpha" was the type I like. You know, super strong and protective, but not controlling. Plus, he is a tiger shifter and how cool are tigers?

not you.

So this book was a continuation of the last one with the Kincaid Pack having a lot of enemies, but one that they can't pinpoint who seems to be pulling the strings of the others. In other words - everyone wants to kill them. So, this is just one other group that tries.

Yeah, good luck with that. They have a fucking tiger!

He must have smelled her Frosted Flakes from breakfast. Tigers be badasses!

A fun and engaging M/M shifter romance—the second in the Kincaid Pack series—between the pack’s second-in-command, tiger shifter Bennett Young, and the son of an enemy alpha wolf, Kieran McAllister, who has recently been given sanctuary within the Kincaid Pack.

Once again, I thrived on the ensemble dynamics within the story and I enjoyed the sweet, sexy slow-burn relationship that evolved between protective and attentive Bennett and traumatised and wary, but brave and sassy, Kieran.

The mate bonds have been strong and engaging with each book so far, but it’s definitely in the larger cast, with its wonderfully drawn pack bonds and found family vibes, that really hold my attention rapt.

I also appreciate the external tension that’s weaved through the story, giving things a bit more complexity and excitement, with an ongoing larger arc, which follows an outside force (still, for the most part, undefined) hell bent on undermining/harming the member’s of the Kincaid pack to an increasingly dangerous degree.

I've (again) had so much fun reading this series, and I enjoy the characters to such a degree that it’s more a necessity than simple interest to keep reading on within the series to see what’s to come for all involved.

Not as good as the first, but good enough that I'll be continuing with this series.

I liked both MCs but didn't care for all the back and forth between them.

Also, Kieran's ex is named Marco, but there's an enforcer called Marcus, and I honest to god got confused.

There are so many secondary characters in this series that using two such similar sounding names felt like an odd choice.

Book safety, content warnings, and tropes down below.

“You deserve someone who’ll take care of you, and I’ve wanted to be that person for a long time. I’ll give you what you need, and you’ll be mine. Understand?”

I enjoyed this one more than book 1. It had a unique plot point where one MC suffers emotionally and physically because of a missing connection with his pack, and I thought that was neat. It was a sweet and slow romance as well, which I often prefer. I do wish we got to know Bennett better, as most of the focus was (understandably) on Kieran.

I’m being good and reading this series in order to get the overarching plot, which also means I get to see more of the side characters throughout, which is cool. I’m curious about the next book, surprisingly enough.

Entertaining and sweet with good narration, but I’m once again complaining about the lack of shifting in a shifter book.

Once again I have mixed feeling on this one. I like most of the characters. And the Kincaid pack set-up but...

It was just too similar to the previous book. Maybe if I hadn’t read them back to back it might not have been as bad. Kieran has suffered like Kai. Although he’s more prickly.

I wasn’t happy that Kieran was just left to wallow in his room for so long. It was apparent that no one had learnt anything from the before.

Despite all this I’m looking forward to the next book. Which should hopefully be a little different.

Didn’t like it as much as the first one, but still had loads of fun. I just love a possessive shifter, what can I say 🤷‍♀️
I’m really intrigued by the overarching storyline and love that we get so see so much more of Rick and Kai and the whole pack. I also liked the slow burn-ish development and UST ❤️‍🔥 I did throw up in my mouth a little bit every time Bennet called Kieran ‘sweetheart’, though. So there’s that.

This is the second book in the Kincaid series by the new author Kiki Clark. It was right up my alley. Hurt-comfort, alpha, sweet but with enough plot to keep it moving and interesting.

Bennett was a little clueless at times in regards to mating (he believed what he had been told, that tigers don't have mates) but he felt the pull towards Kieran nonetheless and couldn't stay away or stop trying to take care of him...no matter how much Kieran blustered and puffed up that he could take care of himself. But Kieran really did need love and support after the horrible abuse that had been heaped upon him by his so called "family". I was glad to see him come into his own.

It did kind of bug me that everyone just sort of let Kieran hide in his room so long without anyone noticing he was wasting away. Surely they knew his wolf needed the contact. So, I felt that part was a little dumb.

But all in all, it checked almost all of my boxes in a good mate story. I can't wait for the next one and dare I say, there may be a MMM in the future??? I'll be keeping my fingers crossed.

This series is so much fun. I'm having a great time following the Kincaid pack and watching the couples fall in love and the found family form. Bennet and Kieran are great. There is a lot of hurt/comfort in this series and in this book. Kieran grows stronger and more confident in his place in his new pack.

I loved that the author didn't let Kieran's self-sacrificing get too far. I hate when characters do stupid things to protect others rather than getting support. But, his wolf takes charge and sends him into Bennet's arms and he gets his support and wins in a satisfying way.

The weak part of this book are the villains. It's weird that only Rick's pack seems to be healthy. Every other pack they try to ally with is ruled by evil and power-hungry abusers. Where are the other "good" people? It doesn't make sense that they're the only good ones.

But... I'm having fun. Great audiobook and fun story.

Never EVER thought I’d see the day that I enjoyed reading a shifter series. But here I am enjoying it. I really love the diversity incorporated into the story. There are a good amount of women and people of color and we even have a Black man as the main character. Secondly, there are so many characters in here that you just wanna follow their journey and see win. So props to the author for creating lovely characters to follow

I will say though one thing I didn’t enjoy is that all of the problems in this book got wrapped up too easily and with a bow on top. This took any and all thrill from the tale because I knew that the characters would come out of each situation completely ok. ALSO... romance doesn’t ALWAYS have to be smiles, cuteness, and confessions of love 100% of the time. Sometimes romance argues, yells, and storms off. That’s ok too. So it would’ve been nice to have some more depth and range of emotions in the relationship between the two main characters.

Anyway, I’ll be continuing with this series. There are a lot of characters I’m rooting for and would like to see where they end up.

I enjoyed Kieran and Bennett's story.
They're both incredibly sweet.

I liked that they're evenly matched in strength and in bed
I liked seeing Kieran fill back into who he's meant to be rather than the wolf that's been beaten down by his father.
I liked Bennett's sunroom where he let his tiger sun bathe.
I liked Bennett's pursuit of Kieran even when he was consistently turned away.
It's all very sweet.

The pack dynamic and conflict with the McAllister pack played out well. Not too predictable.

Now the bane of my existence is the writing. Sigh.
I wish I could spell out why I dislike the writing so much.
I just do. There were dialogues, descriptions, sentence structures, language... all of which made me wince and I had to actively ignore in order to enjoy the story.
Which is really too bad because I like all the characters just not the words used to tell the story.
If that makes any sense.

I'm really enjoying the world Kiki Clark has built around the Kincaid Pack, and I'm really enjoying the characters. Especially Kieran. I freaking loved Kieran in this book. However I need the author to get on with the secondary plot because I'm getting more and more anxious about it for every page.

I liked the first book in this series quite a bit, and the same proficient writing technique and excellent proofreading are present in this one. Some, but not all, of the questions left over from the first book are answered in this one, but at the end of this one there is still a mystery afoot. If you haven't read the first, go back and do so now since these books don't stand alone and can't be read out of order. The rest of this review may also give away small plot points from the first book, so don't spoil it for yourself by continuing to read it!

I didn't like this book as much as I liked the first because it's too similar to the first. The main hurt/comfort theme of the first one is replicated almost exactly in this book. Kieran's back story is very similar to Kai's from book one, and the events of book two proceed almost exactly the same way. It's hard to believe all the protests from the pack leaders of, "Oh we didn't know that [exactly replicating the treatment of Kai from book 1] would yield these results" when yeah, you did, because it's exactly what you people did to Kai in the first book just a few weeks ago in book time with VERY SIMILAR RESULTS. So how exactly am I supposed to believe that your guilt and remorse about the results of your negligent treatment toward yet another pack member are genuine? Are these characters really that dumb?

Look, I get it. This is a book written to a formula with a specific audience in mind. The author probably didn't mean to insult my intelligence or that of her characters since a lot of hurt/comfort books go exactly the same way. If I hadn't read the two books back to back, I may not have even realized that the premise was so similar to the first. However, I did read them back to back and as a result I was pretty bored throughout the second since I had literally just read the same thing in the first. My advice to you if you really want to read these books is to allow a significant gap of time to pass between reading them.

Bottom line: This second book in the series is highly reminiscent of the first. If you liked the first and don't mind repetition, go forth and enjoy this one.

Bennett I've liked since the very first page he appeared on in book 1. He's pretty unflappable, good natured, laid back, and super protective of those he cares about. Not that he's perfect or anything. Honestly, as a mate he is rather managing. He would just decide things and that's that. That kind of bothered me.

It took me forever to warm to Keiran, though. He had the largest chip on his shoulder, took everything in the absolute worst way possible, kept himself separate from everyone, made zero effort to integrate and he gave off super loud "go away" vibes...but wondered why no one seemed to like him. Thing is, they did in spite of the fact he gave them no reason to, but he was determined to keep himself apart for the longest time.

The series story arc advances slightly, and I have my suspicions about who is running the big bad show, so I guess time will tell there.

THE SECOND AND HIS BONDED continues where the previous book left off, this time focusing on Rick’s second-in-command, tiger shifter Bennett. I really enjoyed this one and it’s focus on two lonely people finding someone to care for and love.

As I’m coming to find with Kiki Clark’s books, the romances are so sweet and sexy. Clark really builds the intimacy (in and out of the bedroom) between the couple and I just love that. I enjoyed seeing Kieran find his place in the pack and find confidence in himself. And Bennett is the perfect mate because he wants to take care of Kieran but never stifles his strength or his passion, though it takes Kieran a little to realize that.

I especially loved what a great big cat Bennett was. He’s a tiger shifter and he loves to lounge in the sun (in either form) and he’s an affectionate cuddler. He becomes a soft and welcoming place for Kieran to find peace.

Just like with the previous book, I adored the Kincaid pack. I loved their structure, their devotion to each other and the way they cared for those in need. There's also a really nice balance between how human vs how animal these shifters are.

Almost too good!

First off I truly do love this series, my only issue with it is that the author turns up the suspense to such a high level at times that I end up afraid to turn each new page and what might be about to happen. Love this couple so much, Bennett and Kieran are just awesome! So now on to book three!

I quite like this series. It's definitely entertaining and has a bunch of good characters (even though I did get all of the names mixed up for about half of the book.) I appreciate that it's an ongoing series that's still got the MCs stories along with the "main" theme of what's going with the pack, the counsel, the outside world, etc.

It's still pretty standard shifter stuff even though there's different species, but I like how it tries to deal with the differences of not only the species but also sexual/gender identities.

This is definitely one I will keep reading because I truly enjoy seeing how everyone tries to be inclusive and the mystery is also good enough that I want to know what happens next.

Kieran is the outsider in the pack by his choice. His wolf almost fades away before Bennett and the alpha step in. Love it!

Quick note: I just learned there’s a prequel book, A New Pack for New Year. It’s only available as a freebie through Clark’s website, so it isn’t listed on Goodreads. I’m hoping to sit down in the next few days to read it.

The Second and His Bonded is the 2nd book in Kiki Clark’s Kincaid Pack series. While each book features a different couple and it’s own storyline – there are several story arcs running through the series as a whole, so you’ll want to start with The Alpha and His King and listen to them in order.

I admit – I was kind of in love with Bennet by the end of book 1 and was really looking forward to his story. He was so amazing with Kai that I knew he’d be awesome with whomever Clark paired him with. I wasn’t wrong. Kieran and Kai are a lot alike and I do wish there had been a bit more to differentiate the romantic/relational aspect of this story – but I still enjoyed it. Partially because of Bennet’s endearing personality and the interwoven mystery/suspense of the series. Kieran is understandably prickly and watching him bloom as a person and with Bennet was so much fun.

While The Deputy and His Enforcer is already out in ebook – I’ll be waiting for the audio due sometime this Summer. Because…

Narration:
Kirt Graves is wonderful in this. I like that the various character voices are consistent from book to book. It makes it easy to listen to them back to back (yup, I relistened to The Alpha and His King again). I’m definitely looking forward to more of this series and of Graves in particular.

This is the story between Bennet and Kieran. Bennet is a tiger shifter and I liked how he treated his mate, with respect and left him time and space when it was necessary.
Kieran is uncertain about a lot of things, and doubts kept him long enough from bonding with the pack.
I enjoyed reading about how and with whom, Kieran became friends.
The way the plot developed was good, now there's the last enemy the pack needs to find out about.

This is a pretty good shifter series. I enjoyed this one more than the first because we knew who the bad guys were and I wanted to see how that story line played out.

Kierran was a pretty good character and I loved how hard he worked to prove himself.

I am enjoying the continuing story line and I am intrigued to see who the major bad guy is now that we know that there was someone else pulling the strings.

Pretty good.

I liked this one too. I'm really liking this author... It was good to see Kieran come into his own and it was nice to watch Bennett find his mate.

Sometimes I get irritated when authors blend their books so much that we keep seeing other characters, and sometimes it takes away from the main 2 in the book. For this one, I didn't feel like it took away from Bennett and Kieran, I think because the series feels more like it's about the Kinkaid Pack and the challenges they face, the mystery surrounding their unknown enemy, and their members just happen to find love along the way, as opposed to being about individual pack member love stories that happen to have a mystery in the background... if that makes sense. That being said, I loved seeing Kai and Rick and Samantha and the Kids and everyone else who's pack.

I will say though, Gabriel... yum!! I can't WAIT for his story!!! ❤❤❤

I feel the need to add that for me, this series doesn't feel like it's about the individual members, but more about the pack as a whole, and we get snippets of the members. Their back stories aren't really explained that well, we don't really get a full accounting of Bennett's or Rick's past, for example, we get more of a cliff-notes version, which I guess gives what we need to know, if we don't get hang-up on the details. We get more of a full back-story for the mates because we see it play out on page for the most part, and they fill-in the rest.. I'm still enjoying it.

It took me longer to read than I had intended, and it wasn't due to not being interested in the book... darn life issues get in the way.

Anyway, I found this 2nd book in the Kincaid Pack series, very good and enjoyable to read. So don't let my delay be the issue for not reading the book. If you read book 1 you should enjoy book 2.
