There’s something magically mysterious about Moonstruck Manor, and Kyla can’t put her finger on it.
And neither can the police.

Two murders had happened on the property in the past six months, and it can’t be a coincidence. Especially since both murdered suspects just happened to be hired as breakfast cooks. That’s why the police called in Kyla, a witch, as an outside consultant to work undercover as Moonstruck Manor's latest culinary mastermind. Unfortunately, although she might be able to detect hidden magic, she’s absolutely no good at whipping up breakfast.

But this bed and breakfast is filled with suspicious people, from the gardener who knows a lot about toxic herbs to the housekeeper who was having an affair with both previous victims, and then there’s the handsome bed and breakfast manager…a man Kyla’s attracted to more than she ever thought possible…but that’s just a bit of magic, too.

With the murderer targeting the bed & breakfast chefs, can Kyla solve the murder before she becomes the next victim?

You’ll love this paranormal witch cozy mystery because it has witty witches and trouble-making genies. Not to mention twists and turns you won’t expect and even a little romance.

A cook or a cop

This was an enjoyable book with a lot of things you weren't expecting in your typical cozy mystery. It was a good book that moved right along. After finishing this one I am wondering what is going to happen in the next book.

"Cozy" book number 2, and free on Kindle to boot. I can't give this one the benefit of the doubt as much as I did THE QUILTERS PUSH BACK, mostly because it's trying to be a fantasy book too, and I judge that genre overlap harshly.

The comparisons between the two series are interesting. I think that Joynell Schultz is a more consistent and overall better writer than the ladies who write the Miranda Hathaway books, but unfortunately this leads her to fall into certain annoying tendencies and avoid some of the charming weirdness of the other book. In particular, for listeners of 372 Pages We'll Never Get Back, this book features quite a few "Clinean" elements—for those not familiar, I will explain.

"Clinean" elements are literary, um, choices, that feature prominently in the books READY PLAYER ONE, ARMADA, and READY PLAYER TWO, by Ernest Cline. These choices include having your main character, narrating the story, unwilling or unable to narrate things that are clearly in the author's power to make known. For an example from MAGICALLY MURDERED:

I whistled the melody to whatever song had been on the radio when I entered Moonstruck Manor on Monday morning.

He had taken a leave of absence from work, but I hadn’t been in Black Hallows at the time. I thought I was in Florida or maybe Texas. It was a warm state, I remembered that.

I get that this would work as one character telling another character, but as first-person narration, just give the name of a tune! Just name a state! Unless it matters that it's gone unspecified (which, spoiler: ). "You're the author; you can tell us!" as the common refrain from the 372 Pages podcast goes.

Another Clinean element is particularly grotesque descriptions of facial expressions or utterances, as in "An image of Mr. Shade eating cold kids’ cereal forced out a deep belly laugh" or "A huge smile grew on her deep red lips." This is a cozy paranormal mystery, not a supernatural horror.

Now consider the attempts at paranormal world-building here. It's not great. The way things like the "paranormal web" and the "paranormal police" are casually mentioned, as well as how many magical beings supposedly show up in the book, you'd think the situation would resemble The Night Watch or something, where the interaction between the supernatural and mundane world matters a lot. Well, no. The "paranormal web" is brought up as a plot convenience or a shortcut to worldbuilding, when some of the appeals don't really make sense. Our narrator is a witch, and magical beings don't seem particularly secretive (it's at best the "Harry Potter" school of avoiding Muggle scrutiny) or exotic, so it's not clear how she's only heard of genies via the paranormal web.

And then what magic is on display is actually terrifying when you think about it. Apparently memory alteration spells are standard fare for any witch, which is explained away as a tool to avoid Muggle scrutiny, but it was problematic in Harry Potter and it's problematic here. Even putting ethics aside, and even with clear rules, the possibility of memory alteration really complicates the narrative. The whole story can become suspect, and stakes become way less meaningful, if it could just as easily be "all a dream."

Another "Clinean" trope is a protagonist who thinks they're a hero, and the book wants to treat them as the hero, but what gets described on the page seems unheroic or even villainous instead. The situation is not nearly so dire here, but our protagonist Kyla is sort of a nothingburger for most of the story, and even in the end is mostly tugged by karmic strings rather than taking a truly active role. An inert heroine becomes sort of funny when multiple love interests comment on how amazing she is. In somewhat YA fashion, we get the initial self-deprecating appraisal that's really just a description of a particular body type of no obvious unsexiness, followed by the utter lack of concern in the lusts of multiple eligible bachelors. I get it, it's probably a trope, but the character development is mostly telling-herself rather than showing-herself, so the trope falls a bit flat.

But here's the main problem: the mystery plot is not well crafted, it coasts along until it remembers to throw in a red herring and then wanders into the denouement, where it turns out that I guess that's "cozy" but I want more substance and style to my books, sorry.

1.5 stars, rounded down.

Two breakfast cooks have been murdered in the past six months. So Officer Devin Gentry asks his witch friend, Kyla Hunt, to work undercover and investigate the murders at Moonstruck Manor Bed &Breakfast. Unfortunately for the clientele, cooking is not one of her skills! Devin showed the crime scene photos to Kyla. Both women had just stopped breathing and keeled over. And both happened to be cooks there. He showed her photos of Luke Shade who has been running the B&B for his Aunt Aubrey Dirksen for the past five years. The housekeeper was Nik Gates. Another witch, Jake, had already looked through the evidence but he found nothing. With all their leads gone cold, they needed Kyla to step in as their consultant and work on site. Jake couldn’t do it since he was male and didn’t fit the victim profile.

Arriving for her job interview, Kyla looked around and noticed many enchanted objects throughout the B&B while she waited for the Manager. Luke Shade was a tall, handsome man but very stiff and formal. He was dressed in a fancy 5-piece suit and insisted on being called “Mr. Shade” rather than “Luke”. He ran a B&B that catered to the paranormal, had a lobby full of magical objects, and yet she detected no magical ability from him. But he had researched well and knew she was a witch. But since no one else would work there now, he wanted her full-time and was willing to train her in gardening and other such skills. And he seemed to know her well already when he cautioned her to start with something “easy” for the breakfast guests!

After burning the bacon which set off the smoke alarm, the rest of breakfast ran smoothly. Kyla had brought a tray of muffins from her sister’s bakery, and she made scrambled eggs that were tolerable. She was asked by Mr. Slade to return that evening for a meet-and-greet out back to be introduced to the rest of the staff. He said she could bring a guest, so she brought Devin to get a look at the suspects in person. Nik Gates, the housekeeper, chatted with her and implied Luke didn’t like their cooking since it reflected poorly on the B&B. Luke’s personal friend, Alec Hopper, spoke up to ask Nik if he had admitted to Kyla yet about his own sleeping with the two married cooks, despite his also wearing a wedding band. Alec assured her she should be safe as long as she stayed away from the “dirtbag”. Hmmm, this was getting interesting. As she gathered information, would she be able to help the police find the killer? And would she figure out why she was so attracted to her boss, Mr. Slade?

This was a comfortable introduction to the B&B which is now managed by Luke instead of Aubrey with whom we had shared the prequel adventure. But happily, meeting Luke was equally pleasant. With Kyla hoping to get Devin’s interest back after their break-up 10 years ago – before she was ready for a marriage commitment – and her curious draw to Luke, it sounds like some exciting stories are ahead of us. Grab your copy and see if they can find a murderer, especially since Luke is also among the suspects! The talented author does a wonderful job with the story line and the characters who may be quirky but are fun to get to know!

Great cozy mystery! Ah how love comes to those
who least expect it! This book is the perfect escape
from the troubles plaguing our planet right now! I got caught up in the story and just had to finish it no matter how late it got! There is no “escape” when Cupid comes a calling!

If you’re looking for a sweet romantic whodunnit well
you’ve found it here! Joy sprinkles her magic on the story and it flows effortlessly for the reader.

Really with all the bad news constantly screaming at you take my Rx and settle down for a deliciously delightfully story that will warm your heart. Turn off the idiot box and heal yourself from within with this wonderful story. It has a couple of twists that add to
the suspense. I must admit I picked the wrong character but that’s the fun of a cozy mystery or any mystery for that matter-to try and solve the murder as you read it!

I’m glad their will be another book in this series as these characters will “grow” on you. Somewhere along the way they become your friends and you want to read more about them!

I recommend this book to young and old alike for it’s a well written story that you just have to finish even when the wee hours of the night come upon you.

Pick up a copy today and treat yourself to a cozy that will leave you cheering when you finish it!

The stilted wooden dialogue is diabolically bad for a start. Secondly, how do all the suspects (that Kyla meets for the first time) just all open their mouths and divulge all these wildly personal, yet pertinent to the murders, secrets? It was weird, and made the pacing of the story even weirder.
And the awkwardness never lets up, Kyla meets another suspect and she instantly informs Kyla she's jealous as she's always wanted her job as the cook, but she guesses she just wasn't pretty enough????

No one speaks like this.

Another weird thing was to have Kyla call him Mr Shade all the time - that just felt left field and added to the pile of stiltedness already going on.

At the 52% mark Kyla realises she loves Mr Shade, I mean Luke, I mean Mr Shade. How? When? She's been working there for a week, he gave her one cooking lesson, one dance (and then weirdly stated after it how Kyla's hips moved right?????) and lots of him telling her to go home early - when exactly could she have fallen in love with mr 5 piece suit cardboard man????

I gave up at the 72% mark when I realised I just didn't care who the murderer was or why they'd done it.

Magically Murdered is a sweet romantic cozy mystery. Two cooks working at the magical bed and breakfast are murdered and a witch named Kyla, who doesn’t have any cooking skills, is hired by the police to go undercover as the new cook. There are many colorful characters, most of whom are on her list of suspects. However, Kyla is quickly falling for the manager and he’s also on her list! It’s a fun easy read.

Some of the mystery isn’t that hard to figure out. I think Kyla was a little dense at times putting two and two together. There’s also a bad guy moment, which adds an interesting twist to the story, but doesn’t play out in a plausible way.

falling in love

Kyla is a flake and keeps running from things. She has nothing really that keeps her grounded she is currently working in her sister’s bakery but she is unhappy. Her ex is around but I feel she uses him as something to do instead of someone who is a partner.

She also works part time as a police associate because she is magical. I thought it was going to be different than it was explained. She basically went undercover because her ex asks her to who is a regular police officer not the detective in charge which I thought was weird.

I mean there was just things that I thought were off and that’s why I gave this story 3 *

Witches all have a speciality - air magic, water magic, potion magic - but Kyla can't find her skill.

She knows that she can't cook but that doesn't stop her getting an undercover job as a cook at a local bed & breakfast. There's been two murders and the police want Kyla to use her witch skills to identify the killer.

How many ways can Kyla mess up breakfast? Is Kyla going to get back together with her ex-boyfriend Devin? Or maybe her new boss?

Entertaining mystery. Nice solution.

Don't rub that....

Kayla is a witch with very generic skills. In other words, no one is sure exactly what kind of witch she is. And that sorta describes her whole life. When two cooks did mysteriously at a local B and B, her sometime boyfriend asks her to help look into the matter. That's when the trouble begins!!! If you enjoy a good mystery with some of the paranormal thrown in, then you will enjoy going along with Kyla as she tries to unravel the clues and possibly catch a murderer.

Kyla is a hoot. She has no idea what kind of witch she is, as she can't seem to do anything but the basics that everyone else can do. She can't commit, but runs as far and as fast as she can to avoid sticky situations. Except for her job with the police. She loves helping them, so when they ask her to be bait for a murderer at the B&B, she agrees. Did I mention she's also a bit reckless? Oh, and that she's hired to be the chef when she can burn water?

It's a hilarious cozy, with some serious angst underneath. Enjoy!

Helping out a friend to find out the truth is difficult, especially when it envolves being undercover. That's what Kyla had to learn while helping Devin. She learns that while trying to solve a case for him. Honesty and truthful is always the right thing to do but it can be difficult and in the end, hurtful as well. If you're looking for a good cozy mystery with a slow-burn romance, this is your book. Enjoy!

A bit of murder, a bit of romance, and a lot of magic things going on. How were the two cooks killed? Was it murder? Kyla goes undercover to figure it out and ends up with more than she bargained for. She’s finally understanding more about herself and her magic. It’s very revealing. I really fell right into the story and the characters lives. It was great!

Two cooks at the local paranormal-friendly B&B have died within a short span of time, and the local cops suspect they’ve been murdered. Therefore, they send in a local witch...who can’t cook (?) to go undercover. Wow. Interesting story, especially since it’s the beginning of the series, so she’s figuring out what kind of witch she is, etc. The B&B operator is a genie who’s currently sans master, which isn’t something I see every day, so that was new.

Possible spoilers: This I am being kind with the 3 stars, it was really all over the place and in the end I wanted to throw my book with the fury of 1000 bees. This was not a romance nor was it a cozy murder mystery nor were plot holes filled in. It was a witch who was not sure she was a witch but it was her full time job but only sometimes...And there was a vengeful genie who is only wanting competition but an apology will do, maybe...I donno I need answers.

Kyla is a witch. The problem is, she doesn’t know what type. Maybe that’s why she can’t seem to commit to anything. Whenever there’s talk of any type of commitment where it be to education, family or boyfriend, she runs away. What will it take to change? Will it be someone, or something....something like solving a murder, or falling in love?

Genie for a boss!

Kyle is an inept undercover worker for the police in a supernatural inn. For someone who can't cook being sent in as the inns cook was really doing it the hard way. Plus having the best looking new boss who doesn't seem to care she can't cook. Besides finding her place in the world she has to find who killed the last two cooks. Good read!

Entertaining.

Magically Murdered - Another funny, intriguing paranormal story filled with humans, witches and Genie or two just in this story. Good writing style with thought out story lines and likeable characters mixed with a good pace and plenty of humor. The solving of the murders was different and I liked that. 5*

As good mystery.

This is not like most cozy mysteries with witches. Kyla is a witch who does not know what type of a witch she is. The story has a sweet romance. I like the plot and most of the characters. There is humor. I look forward to the rest of the series.
