In September of 1971, Severus Snape finds a forgotten portrait of the Slytherin family in a dark corner of the Slytherin Common Room. At the time, he has no idea that talking portrait will affect the rest of his life.
It's f*cking impressive, it's fun, it's tender, it's FIERCE, it's everything you need right now. The. Best.
Update 04/28/2021 : Reading for the 3rd time in a year (a personal record even for an obsessed bookseller) and I'm possibly even more enthusiastic than the first time. Nizar is a deep and fascinating character from the get go, the amount of geek knowledge (as the author said themselves) is astonishing but it works well since it's a story about teaching. I'm thrilled I get to read this again and find more and more details that I missed the previous time.
Update 4th read 11/23/2021 : the podfic is equally incredible and gives another dimension to the story, highly recommend listening to it!
(Though I didn't necessarily need to want to learn Latin again, nor suddenly wish to study the story of the languages on the British Isles. Ugh, I need holidays.)
This takes over 25k words in at least four chapters to get to the point, but is probably worth it. Tons of nerdy facts and extensive worldbuilding.
On the other hand, not only not Harry-centric, but Harry is missing throughout this story, and this isn’t even touched much. But I’m promised I’ll like that part when we come to it. Nizar isn’t Harry though, this much is apparent right from the start.
I’m rounding the rating down because of much too much romance, it even ends on that while being utterly unresolved in all ways. This is basically like if HP 1 had ended when Hagrid put Harry on the train back to Surrey after the pre-school shopping. I understand this will go on and on, but… this first part, as a unit, is…
Really decent fanfic: The brother of Salazar Slytherin mysteriously falls from his portrait, while Harry Potter has gone missing after is 4th year at school. Nizar, the protrait, continues to oust Umbridge, be a teacher, correct everybody about history, and be pretty badass – with the help of a Severus Snape, whose backstory is kinda neat.
Extremely rapid setup, would feel hasty if there weren't, like, eleven more parts to this. Concise, emotionally intelligent, and mostly also generally intelligent. I wonder how much of it was planned ahead of time.
