Eric Carle was an American author, designer and illustrator of children's books. His picture book The Very Hungry Caterpillar, first published in 1969, has been translated into more than 66 languages and sold more than 50 million copies. Carle's career as an illustrator and children's book author accelerated after he collaborated on Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?. Carle illustrated more than 70 books, most of which he also wrote, and more than 145 million copies of his books have been sold around the world. In 2003, the American Library Association awarded Carle the biennial Laura Ingalls Wilder Medal (now called the Children's Literature Legacy Award), a prize for writers or illustrators of children's books published in the U.S. who have made lasting contributions to the field. Carle was also a U.S. nominee for the biennial, international Hans Christian Andersen Award in 2010.
The art is cute. I enjoy singing the nursery rhymes to my baby, but he enjoys flipping the pages more. He's at the age where he can open the flaps if I start it, but he's only mildly interested in that right now. He enjoys this book, but it's not his favourite.
A rhyming book for children. You can find here pieces of children's songs - Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, Old McDonald had a farm, The wheels on the bus, and Itsy Bitsy Spider. A very hungry caterpillar accompanies us everywhere. Cute book for Children
There’s no plot to this book, but it’s still fun. It’s songs you know by heart with flaps to lift. Thank you, Dolly!
Moral: Silly rhyming children’s songs are more fun in a flip book format.
Length: It’s pretty short. We could have used a few more rhymes, Eric.
Favorite Line: None. What did you expect me to write, “Old McDonald had a farm, E I E I O?”
Overall impression: Parents love Eric Carle books. Maybe I’m missing the point. All this book does is take stories in the public domain and repackages them as a flip book. Is it an enjoyable experience? Sure. But there’s not an ounce of new ground broken, and frankly, The Girl had more fun watching Mavis’s Mom dance and do hand motions to the songs than anything in the book. Average at best and fairly forgettable.
Eric Carle is a family favorite. This little volume is AWE-INSPIRING to the littles.
The book has all of their favorite nursery rhymes in an abbreviated form. The book includes “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star,” “Old MacDonald,” “The Itsy-Bitsy Spider,” “Hickory-Dickory Dock,” and “The Wheels on the Bus.”
Like I said, my boys love it, but, then again, they love anything Eric Carle. As a parent with a somewhat limited pool of patience for singing nursery rhymes, I like that the songs are short versions. Reading one stanza of “The Wheels on the Bus” is better than five minutes of it. Though, again as a parent, I am deducting one point because of the number of times I have to read this book a day. Like seriously, I think it has addictive qualities. 😂
Dada and I enjoyed the nostalgia of the illustrations, as we both loved The Hungry Hungry Caterpillar as kids. Jack enjoyed the rhymes, especially when I sang twinkle, twinkle little star, but he is still a little rough on the flaps. So we have to work on that.
This is a delightful little collection of five nursery rhymes/songs. I wish there were one more, and the lines don't always scan very well with the lift-the-flap part -- I think the titular Twinkle Twinkle is the most successful of the five -- but overall my daughter loved it! We had lots of fun reading it together.
Lift-the-flap board book with well-known nursery rhymes (only the first lines) and Eric Carle’s iconic illustrations. Nursery rhymes include Twinkle, Twinkle; Old MacDonald; Hickory, Dickory, Dock; The Itsy-Bitsy Spider; and The Wheels on the Bus. Great for babies to preschoolers
Great artwork bty Eric Carle really brings some pop to these old nursery rhymes. The pop-ups themselves are fairly flimsy and not made of the same card-stock material as the rest of the book. Small thing but there's a good chance my baby will rip one or more of these eventually.
First time he copied me doing signs to a song was while I was singing the itsy bitsy spider; and when I'd say the sun came out he raised his arms in the air. Makes me melt every time.
The flaps tear off easily. The nursery rhymes are traditional American rhymes, but are unremarkable and lack significant meaning or educational value. The pictures are nice, but don't make it worth reading.
Super cute book with some well-known nursery rhymes illustrated with Eric Carle’s signature style. Removed 1 star because I wish the flaps were sturdier. I almost ripped them when I was originally separating them from the rest of the page!
My daughter loves the book and singing the songs, it’s a favorite at bed time. My only question is why when we get the wheels on the bus song, why is the driver in military fatigues and the bus only has children of color?
