Call of the Void
By J. Z. Foster
This continues the story right where book one ended. Their orders are to go back and make sure they know what happened to a certain scientist. If alive, they are to bring him home. They are not happy. They will be lucky to survive.

If there’s one thing I know for certain whenever I find myself indulging in Sci-Fi horror (be it fiction or movies), it’s that I would not fare well in space. The claustrophobia, the tingling itch in one’s space suit, the risk of unknown contamination, the possibility of alien combat. No thank you! I will gladly stick to experiencing all of this through the pages of a book. And I had the privilege of doing just that with book 2 of the Reality Bleed Series: CALL OF THE VOID.

J.Z. Foster and Justin M. Woodward have done it again with this incredibly gripping sequel! This time the hero crew of the Perihelion is burdened with the responsibility of recovering valued asset and scientist Will Braun before returning to Earth. But the task of finding and detaining him proves easier said than done when the Mars Felicity Station is still crawling with aliens and space zombies.

If the first book is capable of winning over its audience with suspense and the mystery of how the terrifying alien creatures operate, the second is sure to terrify with double the creepy crawly aliens and double the slaughter. Experiencing all the horror from the alternating perspectives of the crew is definitely a plus point for me in this series thus far and the characters are beginning to grow on me! Book 2 will chill you to the bone and make you glad you stayed on Earth. You really need to check this series out!

(Special thanks to the author for this copy in exchange for an honest review!)

Scheisse!

My god, that was epic. Even better than book one, Reality Bleed Two “Call of the Void” continues to pwn in the best ways possible. The action never stops, the creatures, the characters, nuggets of lore and tech, Felicity Base is it’s own character, as much a part of the story as any. And, the you-know-what continues to hit the fan in a big, big way. I love the POV’s, there isn’t a dull page in this entire book. And what a gore-score, the FX are perfecto! Oh just you wait until you meet Scalpie. Woodward and Foster rule. Horror meat + Sci-Fi potatoes = Reality Bleed. This is must-have fiction, seriously.

Mars: And the carnage continues....

Tealson and his team have their hands full attempting to rescue and return the US most valued asset which is also known as the evil and despicable Willy Braun. But unfortunately, one big, big problem is that the space station is still swarming with flesh-eating and parasite laying deadly 'elites' and 'riddens' which are all still searching, hunting and craving more human meat to feed their hunger.

A guaranteed blood fest galore, with lots of fast moving action, which is simply a direct continuation of "Hell on Mars' - book 1.

Thoroughly enjoyable, with some great ideas, though some of the non-stop wonderfully graphic slaughtering and killing did occasionally appear to take centre stage rather than the actual storyline itself. Also, although the ending was decent and obviously left in limbo, due to the story's continuation in book 3, I thought that it felt a little flat and obvious and lacked that little bit of extra magical sparkle. Then again, perhaps 'Scalpie' (excellent) and I were just being drawn and 'Called into the Void!'

Looking forward to book 3 - fantastic fun and a great series. Rating: 4.6 stars.

Call of the Void is super scary and kept me on the edge of my seat. I'm invested in the characters and cry out in frustration, with the other members of the crew, whenever my favorites are injured. I can't wait for the next installment but if the pace continues to escalate I may need a tranquilizer to calm down.

Outstanding

Another outstanding read. Going by the success of the 1st book I didn't think it could be duplicated but they proved me wrong. What a great continuation. Please keep up the great work. I'm looking forward to book 3.

And the story continues. Who's to blame, who will survive and who will die. Will the military be able to save the man responsible or will they fail? The second book bring more action to a story I fell in love with from the begining. Excited to see what book 3 has in store!

Really fun, but a little fast paced, I would’ve loved more tension and buildup- make the reader feel the dread of the crew instead of just constantly throwing new hurdles and monsters at every turn.

“Why in the hell did you join Orbital corps?” he said as he paced up and down the line. No one dared answer him. “Was it because you wanted to do something new and exciting? Well, what’s more exciting than being the first person to shoot an alien in the face?”

The second installment of the Reality Bleed series wastes no time hurling the crew of the Perihelion back into the nightmare of Mars Felicity Station. Their mission this time is to find and extract Dr. Will Braun (the scientist at the heart of the catastrophe) before the station and everyone aboard it are lost to the horrors that have spilled through the rift. Outfitted with heavier gear and combat armor, the soldiers descend once again into cramped corridors swarming with monsters. What follows is a relentless gauntlet of gory skirmishes.

Where Hell on Mars relied more on dread and the unknown, Call of the Void doubles down on spectacle. The ambiance of creeping fear is traded in for breakneck pacing- with each chapter structured around the same looping pattern of push, regroup, and push again. The result is undeniably fun in bursts... Bullets fly, aliens screech, and the pages move quickly... but the sheer velocity also comes at a cost.
I found myself losing track of who was where, or even who had survived, as the focus leaned so heavily into carnage. The monsters remain grotesque and vividly described, but the squirmy sense of dread that made the first book unsettling is diluted by the constant gunfire.

Dr. Will Braun emerges as a new and intriguing figure, though even here the book resists dwelling too deeply on psychology. He’s guilty, secretive, and clearly compromised by the void’s influence, yet his presence is mostly a narrative engine rather than a fully explored character study. The soldiers, meanwhile, too often feel like call-signs rather than individuals; their camaraderie and occasional dark humor are enjoyable, but fleeting. I started to skip along til I got to quieter beats; those moments of paranoia, exhaustion, and claustrophobic terror, before the next swarm of monsters broke down the door.

Stylistically, Foster delivers exactly what many readers will want: a gore-drenched, cinematic escalation of book one. The writing is kinetic and the action choreography easy to visualize. At the same time, the repetition of the mission structure (specifically the cycle of engage, withdraw, and repeat) makes the story feel episodic, almost like checkpoints in a campaign from a video game. That sameness sometimes undercuts the impact of the horrors themselves.

Overall, Call of the Void is a solid continuation that will thrill readers craving more action and gore... But for those who, like me, preferred the eerie buildup of Hell on Mars, it may feel like a step away from what made the first book so unsettling. For me, it lands somewhere in between: fun and compulsively readable, but a little too noisy for its own good.

The insanity continues! With a new mission preventing them from heading to safety, the crew is duty bound to reenter the hell they (mostly) escaped from. Unfortunately, someone made a BIG mistake, and they all have to pay for it. This was a great sequel to Hell on Mars, and I can't wait to see what happens next.

The sci fi horror filled with aliens, parasites, and space zombies continues with CALL OF THE VOID, book 2 in the Reality Bleed series. This is a great continuation of the story and really kicks off with a bang and doesn't let up until the end. Everything I enjoyed from the first book holds true in this sequel and there are new situations at hand that had me even further engaged. I would 100% not survive this mission - it is NOT for me! But I do love reading about it and I think these would make for a great adaptation (wink wink if anyone in the industry is reading this review!) Let's see what happens in the next installment...!

Holy bananas.... that is all that ran through my mind when I finished this book. This is an intense thrill ride from start to finish, and comes alive in a way that few other books ever do. As you are reading it, you are suited up in a CAG right along with everyone else right down to sights, sounds,
smells and sensations. I am intensely picky on the books I read and I was leery at first, but I am now fully on board with whatever J.Z. and Justin put out (This is only shared by three other authors...). If you are looking for an adrenaline fueled gore fest that will simultaneously entertain and scare the pants off of you, this is your read!! Thank you for the opportunity to review this stunner!

Solidly fucked up. Kinda nasty at some points. Certain things did shock me. I was not prepared for a few of the twists and turns. I just want something to go right for these poor little cogs in such an uncaring machine. :,(

Everything I loved about the first book (see previous review) is continued here: grotesque and terrifying aliens, loads of gore and fast-paced action, an intriguing storyline, and - perhaps surprisingly for this type of story - loads of characters I’m actually invested in!

CALL OF THE VOID builds on the first book perfectly, continuing the super engaging story and style while also introducing cool new elements. The fight against the monstrous parasites from another dimension is far from over, but this next chapter in the series is not to be missed!

I was listening to the DOOM video game soundtracks as I read to get in the mood, and they fit the action scenes well. But then I found myself switching over to THE THING soundtrack, needing that slower build of eerie dread. I guess what I’m saying is the authors do an excellent job of alternating between scenes of high velocity action and nail-biting suspense. There are also plenty of moments for much-appreciated character building, helping me care more about those risking their lives on the Mars space station (yes, even the cruelly efficient Braun).

Mostly about survival, a little bit about death, and 1% shapeshifting.

The narrator for this book does a great job with the voices for the different characters but still has his odd whisper shouting going on. Just raise your voice a bit to add to the texture of the storytelling aspect.

The second book was good, better than the first. I think the way the author wrote about the team's venture into the space station was definitely more gripping than the first book. The writing this time was also better, definitely morbid and gruesome. The basic horrors that happen to be aboard are more than I thought they would be and it makes me think of them as leechlike creatures.

Omg i loved this one even more than the first book. The whole series I feel like is going to be a solid 5 stars or 10 all together.
It picks up right after the ending of book 1 and it just never stops. Just the fact that the authors make sure you feel that itch of being in one of their suits will drive you crazy.
The descriptions of the monsters and the body horror in this gets ramped up making me scrunch up my face. The end of ch 10 literally made me gasp!
This whole series needs to be a tv show or movie franchise.
Oh yea and FU Braun!!

In this entry, the crew of Perihelion are now decked out in top of the line combat gear and weaponry but still find difficultly in accomplishing their mission of retrieving and extracted lead scientist Will Braun from the Mars space station.

The action gets turned up a notch in this one. Armored suits, hordes of baddies, bullets and alien goo flying everywhere! Despite all of the added carnage, the storytelling does not get sacrificed. Backstory on some of the characters and creatures is given and some of the lesser known characters are more fleshed out.

Overall, Call of the Void was a fun read. If you enjoyed Hell on Mars, you'll definitely like this one.

DR
Having reported situation back to Earth command Perihelion's captain receives orders to retrieve or confirm the death of Dr. von Braum. Good soldiers follow orders. No matter how much of a reserves of the reserves they are all space force military are infantrymen first.

The Perihelion crews mission parameters are extremely vague. Shit hits the fan almost immediately once they disembark back on Mars Felicity Station. Von Braum doing what von Braum does, making cold decisions based on facts and highest probability to achieve the goal - consequentialism. Space force gofers are pushed onward by moral obligation and sworn duty - deontology.

One can't help to sympathize with space force crew. Constantly on edge, underinformed, underqualified and undermanned. The underdogs on Fellicity station. While von Braum's walk across the station uses all possible means of survival, underhanded or otherwise.

Conclusion: 4/5. Listened on Audible included in plus catalogue, bought for re-listening for 1 credit. Narrated by: Tom Taylorson. In "Reality Bleed" book #2 , Perihelion's crew led by their duty bound captain return to Fellicity after receiving new orders and put up the best fight they are able to. Here's to hoping that will be enough. Having recovered Dr. von Braum, acquired new information the cpt. has to make a choice, leave following the initial orders or proceed deeper into Fellicity station to close the reality bleed, that lets the things through.
