The book "Life Lessons (Lessons of a Student Midwife # 1) by JE Rowney is a very well written YA novel about two friends who go to their first year of college. The story is life, the author may be Midwife, if not then she certainly knows someone very well, who is engaged in this work because the scenes from the maternity ward are excellently described. The story in the book mostly follows Violet who dreams of becoming a midwife, but she is constantly underestimated even though she has invested her whole life and learning to become a midwife. The reason for this is her fear and she struggled with anxiety throughout her teenage years. Luckily, her friend Zoe helps her overcome anxiety attacks, but Zoe herself has problems because she is in love with their roommate. You can read in this book how two friends will deal with these problems. The book is solidly written and easy to read, it focuses on Violet and her learning, so I hope that in the next sequel the story will surely go in love directions because in this book there are only tiny hints of future events. In the book, I am fascinated by Violet’s love of working with pregnant women and participating in the birth of babies that she did as a midwife. I would recommend the book to YA readers, but also to all other readers who like to read an interesting story.

This book was an amazing read for me that brought me back to my days learning how to be a nurse. As a young woman trying to navigate University, clinicals in the hospital, a new career, and also dealing with all matters of friendship, young love, crushes, and all sorts of adventures and journey of self discovery, this book really resonated with me and brought me all sorts of emotion and nostalgia.

Violet and her journey in becoming a midwife while overcoming her fears, anxieties and developing her confidence was beautifully written by Rowney. I really enjoyed the writing style, the character development, and the subject matter of course was very well researched. I highly recommend this book. What a great easy read and a walk down memory lane to my days in the hospital and college days. This was a fantastic read I really enjoyed.

I was quite intrigued by the blurb, year 1 in the life of a student midwifery. Author JE Rowney was earnest in her writing, portraying every scene with the emotion that it needed.

Violet and best friend Zoé went to the same university together and shared the same flat along with a third person, Luke. This book was Violet's story and her victory over her mind-numbing anxiety attacks.

It was wonderful to see Vi embark on her dream and absolutely heart wrenching to see anxiety paralyze her brain, leading her to the point of almost failing in her courses. The teachers were strict yet quite understanding. I liked how the medical fraternity was shown.

Violet learning the aspects of examining a pregnant woman reminded me of my days of studies and internship. It was quite nostalgic in some ways.

Friendship was emboldened in the story; there was so much support and love between Vi and Zoé. I was almost jealous. I too wanted that.

A light read which had a poignant message behind it, the author celebrated not only Violet passing her year 1 but also overcoming her anxiety and panic attacks.

Quite an inspiring evening read.

Thoroughly enjoyed this book.
Would suit YA too, very interesting to learn about midwifery uni courses as I always wanted to be a midwife so reading about this in the book, loved the friendship between the girls and already moving on to book number 3 by this author!

Life Lessons was an absorbing and emotional read. It was also educational - there is so much I didn't know about how it is to be a midwife! This lovely story follows Vi along her journey as she learns her trade, while trying to cope with her extreme anxiety along the way. I really felt for her at times.

I especially enjoyed the banter in the shared house - including with the absent 'Andrew'. And Vi's friendship with her long-suffering but devoted pal Zoe was heart-warming.

I recommend this book and look forward to reading more from this author.

You will enjoy getting to know Violet and her friends in Book One of the Lessons of a Student Midwife series. Violet and her best friend Zoe are off to Uni together, to study for their dream careers. Violet is in the Midwife program and Zoe is in the Teaching program. Life Lessons is the story of their first year at school.

Violet knows she wants to be a Midwife- part of something emotional, intimate and intense. She is a smart, calm, easy-going young woman. She suffers from panic attacks which may have a serious impact on her place in the program. Zoe is more outgoing and confident and seems to enjoy her first year. Both of them are nice girls who stay at home and study. They share a house with a young man named Luke. Zoe flirts with Luke, but readers will have to wait until the next book to see if anything develops. A cute part of the story involves an imaginary roommate.

Readers who are looking forward to some medical drama will enjoy the stories of Violet’s training. In spite of her anxiety, she truly cares about her patients and connects with them. Violet’s year ends on a high note with happy thoughts for her second year of training.

Life Lessons is written in the first person, which is especially effective in showing Violet’s anxiety attacks as well as her hospital training. This is a sweet and gentle read, with a touch of humor and a great deal of inspiration. Life Lessons is a good title. Violet is learning how to bring life into the world as she also learns more about living her own life. I look forward to the next book in the series. I received a digital advance review copy from Rachel’s Random Resources and this is my honest review.

Violet and Zoe are excited about starting uni and pursuing their dream careers – A teacher for Zoe and a midwife for Vi. But there’s one thing that gets in the way for Vi, and that’s the anxiety that she’s struggled with since she was eleven. Best friends since they were toddlers, Zoe has her back and will help her get through, but can Vi have the confidence in herself? Will she get to deliver a baby? And will they pass their first year?

As someone who is about to embark on their university journey (albeit as a mature student!) this book was fab! From moving in to their accommodation at the start of the year, freshers week, first lectures, presentations, placements, assignments and exams this took me on a whole year with Vi, and all the feelings she encountered. As a sufferer of anxiety too, I could completely feel for Vi, and I have to say some of the bits she was going through got my anxiety going too (presentations and exams – eeek!)

This story is written brilliantly, and feels like you’re reading a memoir rather than a fictional story. Not only do we get to experience Vi’s uni adventures but the life of a student midwife too, and all the things they have to learn. I’m not a fan of anything child birth related usually (I’m pretty squeamish!) but this had just the right amount of details and was fascinating.

In terms of the characters I loved Zoe, Violet and their housemate Luke. They sound like a fab bunch, and there are so many supportive characters in this that try to understand Vi’s anxiety. I do feel for Vi – anxiety is a hard thing to manage and Rowney does a fantastic job of describing exactly what it’s like to live with. If anyone needs an understanding (for a family member or friend) of what it’s like, they should read this. I was so proud of Zoe for how she managed and overcame her anxieties and wanted to give her a big hug and high five! I also really wanted Luke and Zoe to get together – but do they? (You can read and find out!)

Overall, I absolutely loved this book. A fictional but very real insight in to the life of a student midwife, I nearly had me in tears (of joy!). If you’re a fan of babies or interested in midwifery, you’ll definitely enjoy this. But also if you want an easy, enjoyable and relatable read or an insight into anxiety, then this is for you. Now I know this is the prequel to Ghosted, I need to read it!! This is definitely recommended by me so go check it out!

Omg this book...
amazing. Feels all the feels and emotions soooo many emotions.
This is the first book that I’ve read by J.e and will definitely not be the last. I need the next in this series stat *lol* I may have had a mini tantrum when I realised there were no more pages. I was absorbed from the first to the last page.
I love J.e’s style it’s so easy going.
I loved and was able to completely relate to Vi. She and I share many similarities and she’s out doing what I wish I was confident enough to do :)
Her relationship with Zo is beautiful, the banter, the love the care and compassion, every girl needs a zo in their life.
Encase you didn’t guess. I absolutely ADORED this book and will be on the lookout for the second. Until then I shall read her backlog and any other work she puts out there.
J.e you have a new diehard fan for life <3

I received an ARC of Life Lessons from the author and I absolutely loved it. It was engaging, enlightening, and impossible to put down. It was even educational as I learned new vocabulary and lots of interesting facts about midwifery. The story is so well written that I felt like I was right there with Violet,  seeing it through her eyes. I loved the connections that the characters have with each other and I look forward to reading more about Violet and her life.  I can't wait to read Ghosted.

All I can say is finally , a midwifery related novel that I actually enjoy . I enjoy the birth stories from many midwife books , but the midwife memoirs I’ve read before are very much bedtime stories thar lulls me to sleep. I love Call the Midwife but I don’t understand why the book was so popular, the show is great but the book wasn’t very exciting .

This book is different in that the target audience seem to be young people rather than people of the older generation . I feel like I fit right into the story and it seems like I’m in midwifery school right alongside Violet . I can feel myself cheering her on for everything she accomplishes in this book and I’m constantly saying “ No, no, no , that’s not true “ when she begins to have panic attacks and self doubt.

Also , despite watching Call the Midwife for the past 8 years , I thought there’s no more basic knowledge for me to learn about childbirth . However there’s so much more than Ive learned after reading this book. All in all this book is educational in addition to engaging.

First I want to thank J.E. Rowney and Rachel’s Random Resources for providing me with this book so I may bring this review.

J.E. Rowney sure picked the perfect name for her latest book Life Lessons. Violet definitely learned a lot about herself throughout her journey.

I was glad to see that J.E. Rowney brought awareness to Anxiety and how it can affect someone’s life. Not many authors talk about mental illnesses such as this one. I too could relate to Violet and her daily life-as I struggle with it too.

Friendship is another big topic in this book. Zoe is Violet’s rock through everything. I loved the bond that they shared.

I loved how J.E. Rowney educated us on all things Midwifery as Violet was in school for this topic. To me being fascinated with all things medical I really enjoyed this part. Not to mention I understood most of the medical terms.

Unfortunately, it started out slow and was not able to hook my attention right away.

Violet and Zoe have always been the best of friends and dreamed of going to university together. Zoe wants to be a teacher whilst Violet wants to train to as a midwife. Their dreams finally come true and they embark on their first year at university together. Once there, they meet housemate Luke and quickly become a trio. Told from Violets point of view we follow her through the first year of midwifery study and training. From classroom to hospital and all the highs and lows in between. We also see her battling terrible anxiety that has the potential to ruin her dreams if she can’t overcome it.

I absolutely adored this book! It ended up being such a personal book for me that I couldn’t not love it. The reason this book initially appealed to me is because it was compared to This is Going to Hurt, A Hard Push and Call the Midwife. I love books that focus on and share stories from medical settings, and one told from the perspective of a student midwife sounded different to other books I have read. Now because this book was compared to those aforementioned books which, are all nonfiction I assumed this book was also a nonfiction. To be completely honest I spent the first 30% of this book believing it was a nonfiction. I only realised it wasn’t when I went back on to Netgalley and noticed it was marked as fiction. However, once I knew this it didn’t change my reading experience. It did read very much like a nonfiction story and I think that played a part in how quickly I read it as I tend to read nonfiction quite quickly. It also meant the characters felt incredibly real and I immediately became invested in their lives and story.

The main reason this book struck so strongly with me is studying midwifery is almost ‘the one that got away’ scenario for me. I picked my degree on a total whim and continued to study it despite knowing it wasn’t right for me. This was driven by fear and lack of confidence in admitting I made the wrong choice and starting from scratch. When picking my degree at college we were offered very little guidance and I didn’t know a quarter of the options that were out there and where they could lead. It was only later on when I began to research this career path and wished I had given it a go. I actually started the process of applying a few years ago but again I chickened out and didn’t continue with this. This book offered me a mall window into what it may have been like to study midwifery. I adored how much detail went into documenting violets journey. We learnt so much about what she did in lectures and then at her placements. It really documented the academic process and made me feel like I was there with her learning and that’s what really made me love this story. I just felt a real personal connection with it. I obviously cannot comment on how accurate the portrayal of studying this degree is, but it felt very authentic. There was so much detail in here that I can only assume the author had personal experience or spent a lot of time researching the topic.

Violet also really struggles with anxiety and once again I related to this on such a personal level. I too suffer from anxiety and could empathise with violets feelings on so many occasions. She spoke about her feelings of worthlessness and feeling she is a fraud. She also addresses her feelings of being a burden on people around her. Having experienced all of these feelings I really felt for violet. There was a scene where her anxiety really got the better of her in an exam and I had a very similar experience when I was taking my initial exam to study midwifery and it meant I couldn’t finish. Although it was hard watching Violet battle these things it was great to see her go through these experiences, grow in confidence and come out the other side.

I have also always loved books set at university, particularly those where the students live away from home. It gives me the opportunity to relive my student years through them. Although Zoe, Luke and Violet were all quite tame! They were far more interested in studying than partying. It was just fun following along with them on their journey.

Finally, I adored the friendships in this story. Zoe and Violet really are the best of friends who were always there for each other when needed. They knew each other so well and could tell instinctively when the other was upset. It was lovely to read about such a positive depiction of female friendship. Luke was also a great character and settled well into the girl’s dynamic. I also liked that for Violet there was no romance at any point for her. I loved following a character who was focused on friendship and her studies. I was also excited there is a new installment in this series coming out in August where we re-join Violet in the second year of university. From the synopsis it does sound like romance may be on the cards, so I am interested to see how violet balances this with her friends and studying.

Overall, I chose this book thinking it would be a collection of nonfiction stories from a student midwife and got something so much more. Despite it being fiction, it felt very real, authentic and like it could have been a nonfiction account. It was great gathering an insight into what it may have been like study midwifery. That teamed with violets experiences with anxiety really struck a chord with me. It meant this book really provoked strong emotions in me. It meant a really enjoyable, coming of age story become something more to me. I think it’s a book I will continue to think about and return to many times in the future.

Thank you to Netgalley and the Publisher for providing me with a copy of this book for review.

Violet has extreme anxiety attacks. Or as her long-time friend and college roommate, Zoe, puts it: sometimes the anxiety has her. It’s a crushing thing for her to deal with. The room seems too warm, and she can’t get enough air. Nausea threatens to make her disgrace herself. And all she has to do is escape, and the symptoms stop.

But not anymore. Violet is determined to become a midwife, even though the course of study is intimidating. Before she graduates, besides passing her classes, she must also deliver forty infants, care for them and their mothers, perform episiotomies, and care for a hundred post-natal women and newborns.

The first serious hurdle is all the classroom presentations. She has to walk up front and present her section. Even with a caring and compassionate group, she’s not sure she can do it.

But her schoolmates encourage her to accomplish just one task at a time, and it seems to be working. She gets through the presentations. She accomplishes her first postnatal checks. And she’s in love with what she’s doing.

But then she draws an instructor who believes Violet should have been a nurse before entering midwife training. Her high expectations and dismissive attitude make Vi doubt herself fiercely and she flees a practical examination that she must pass to continue in the program. Now she wonders if she really has what it takes to become a midwife…

In a line-by-line sense the book is flawless. Descriptions are frequent and helped me form sharp mental images. Violet is an engaging character whose struggle evokes sympathy. The book seems well-researched, full of midwifery details that seem authentic. My only critique is that Vi struggled with a series of small challenges throughout the book. Nothing wrong with that, but I wanted something bigger for her to personally overcome. Perhaps that is what’s waiting in subsequent installments, since this is the first book in a series.

She forms the two words that give the literal definition of midwife. Mid- wife: with woman.
"In France, we would be called sage-femme, which means 'wise woman.' In days gone by we would have been called witches. I know what I prefer. With woman. That is what this, your vocation, is all about: being with a woman. Supporting her. Being by her side throughout the most intimate, emotional, challenging period of her life."

(In case you were wondering, this book contains some language and mentions of alcohol use)

Special thanks to NetGalley for the ARC!

Full disclaimer, I didn't realize this was a prequel and know nothing about Ghosted. That being said, this was a fun read that included some of my favorite things-Brits and medicine.

I've been working with our maternal unit (L&D and ante/post-partum) lately, so this has kind of been my world. This is super approachable for non-clinicians, and it was fun to learn a little bit about the training structure in the UK. The book is definitely are the lighter, fluffier side, but it's still an enjoyable read. Reading it was like a throwback to college life and grad school, and Violet is a pretty relatable protagonist.

We follow Violet through her first year of training as she deals with all the normal struggles of student life (group projects, public speaking, OSCEs...) as well as her anxiety. It's fun watching her grow in skill and confidence. The friendships are cute (Andrew, the imaginary housemate is my favorite,) and it's refreshing to read something that isn't romance-heavy for once.

My only complaints are that the story felt a little rushed at times and I wished the characters had a bit more depth. Otherwise, if you're looking for a cute, quick read, you could do worse than picking up Life Lessons.

This book is rather adorable. The two main characters, Violet and Zoe, are everything best friends should be. Their housemate Luke adds flavor to the mix. Their second housemate Andrew happens to be imaginary, but that doesn't hold him back from being as lovable as the rest of the cast.

Violet has wanted to be a midwife for as long as she can remember, and the only thing holding her back is her anxiety. She is in the very relatable position of being able to perform perfectly and without hesitation in real world settings, while becoming incapacitated at the mere thought of doing those same tasks in a role play for academic testing purposes. Why is it so scary to be tested on something you know you can do? I don't know, but it is, which makes Violet's struggle a very recognizable one.

I don't know if this book is autobiographical or not, but the author sure seems to have an intimate knowledge of studying midwifery at uni. If she hasn't taken the actual course, she's done so much research that I'd feel safe with her in any delivery room.

The central conflicts in the book are the juxtaposition of Violet's struggle with anxiety and Zoe's awkward crush on their housemate. For one of these conflicts, satisfying progress is made throughout the book. For the other, frustrating stagnation leaves us hanging. I suppose we'll just have to find out how it resolves in the next installment, Love Lessons.

This seems like a cute story and very relatable well thought out and in a very orderly development over time.
This book is relatable for many people including myself and I think the way this is written is great as it shows a first-hand event of the character while also learning.
This is very great as it gives flaws to the main character and a rounded personality and has great ways to deal with anxiety within the university which is great and apply to me very well.
This is great to learn the process of the midwife course and what you need to go through this challenging period and coming out on the other side and how to deal with this and it is great as I work in veterinary to see the comparison to the human care courses as a change.
Some of the things are brushed past and some loose ends are left unsolved which is upsetting but I believe overall it fitted in well to the predicted age range.
This book is a great combination of anxiety rep and young adults issues that can show what being a student and having anxiety can do and how going through them can be hard time I have anxiety and am a young adult and this seems appropriate for the character that is shown in the book.
I learned a lot and enjoyed it although it was well rounded it felt like it lacked something I cannot put my finger on.

I love that this is based on being at uni, i absolutely loved my time at Uni.

The nerves that violet gets before her presentation are just how I felt in the first few I did too. It's like I'm back at uni reading this, standing in front of my class mates trying to remember what I needed to say.

It's so like uni life and don't think it matter what course you do, student union and bar experiences, clubs and relationships are all there. Living with other people that aren't your family, washing up, cooking and nights out. It took me back as if I was there at uni with them. I was totally transported.

I don't know any midwives so this is a great insight into their course and the training it takes. I love the call the midwife and one born every minute for the pure joy that the familiea get when they're holding their baby for the first time.

I can't imagine the feeling for delivering the first baby as a midwife, from Violets reaction it's an elating experience and one that is hard to beat. The emotion that is invokes must be incredible.

I love the friendship between Violet and Zoe and Luke it's really nice. I made an amazing friend at uni and she was one of my bridesmaids 15 years after I met her so she e stayed great friends even though I moved back to my home town.

This was a book that I wasn't sure was my "thing" but I was looking for something easy to read and this was an automatic approval ARC so thought I'd give it a go. I'm glad I did!

It follows the life of Violet as she attends her first year midwife training at university. She's rented a room in a house with her friend from school Zoe and another student Luke. The story is set throughout her first year with her experiences with lectures, placements and friendships.

I particularly liked how the author handled Violets struggle with anxiety and panic attacks, doing so sensitively but showing exactly how it can feel to someone who suffers from them and ways in which you can try to help.

I thoroughly enjoyed the book, it was well written and easy to read. The main character of Violet was relatable and lovable and the other characters were realistic. The story held my attention and I was interested in what was going to happen next.

I was pleased to see that this is part of a series and have already pre-ordered the next book, roll on year two! It is also a prequel to the book "Ghosted" which I have also now purchased.

What a beautiful story. Life lessons is book one in the lessons of a student midwife series. The story focuses on Violet and her bestie Zoe, both heading off to University. Violet to become a midwife... Violet struggles with her anxiety and we see that throughout this story and how she overcomes her anxiety.
A lot of research and time has been put into this story. As a mother reading it it brought back both of my childrens births and the lovely midwife who was training, she did a brilliant job. There's a lot to learn it's not an easy job. But very rewarding. An interesting story, insightful. Amazing. I can't wait to see what happens to Violet in her second year of University.
By her side the whole time is her bestie Zoe who is studying at the same Uni but a different course. They live in the same house share. There's more of a romance story with Zoe in this book though. A brilliant read. One I won't forget in a rush. A beautiful ending. A well deserved four stars. Highly recommend.

I think I would have gotten a lot more out of this if I was still in college. As it is, I feel like I was very past all the experiences that Violet and Zoe went through.

As it was, I did like the story enough. I enjoyed seeing Violet's growth and determination throughout the story. She was a strong character and I liked seeing the way she approached her studies and passion.

The side story about Zoe and Luke was pretty cringe, but again, this is coming from someone who just graduated college rather than someone starting. I don't know how they get from where they are now to whatever happens in the blurb of the next book, and I don't really care. This was a fun read although it did take forever because it didn't feel great to read right after leaving college. But when I finally decided to finish it, it was fine.

Probably wouldn't reread or continue series, but who knows.

This…this book right here. I’m not sure what I was expecting when I got it, but I was definitely disappointed by this. It seemed that the author had done a lot of research into what student midwives go through during their program, and that was really interesting for sure, but it was the main character that I didn’t warm up to. And then, when I read the blurbs of the following books in the prequel series (this is the first book from that series) and the blurb for the book that the series is prequel to, I didn’t like the main character’s journey. While I probably shouldn’t have read the blurbs, I wanted an idea of what was to come, and I didn’t like what I saw. Based on my reading of this book (which I finished before reading the blurbs), I feel confident that I wouldn’t have enjoyed continuing in the series.

So sad to have reached the end one minute I was at 75% and revelling in how Violet was coping and adapting and the next I'm at the end!

I loved the story of the three university students and although there was a lot of focus on everyone at the beginning this helped us get to know the main characters and as the story progressed it became much more focused on Violet.

This is a series I can't wait to read, the detail of the births and procedures is written in a factual way without complicated terminology to confuse the reader and it genuinely feels like your walking through a birth as you read.

A great start to the series that left me keen to keep reading as I felt that I wasn't rest to stop my journey with Violet.

It was well written and such a nice read, I got really in to the story and loved following Violet as she started to follow her dreams and begin her career as she starts to study to become a midwife.

The characters are wonderful, so well developed and genuine. I loved the interaction between Violet and her Zoe and also her interaction with the ladies she meets on the wards and during her time in community, both the patients and the midwifes she accompanies. I loved every page and the ending of the book was just great

It is 5 stars from me for this one – very highly recommended and I have already been recommending it! I have already downloaded and read the second book too so watch out for that review too! Such a brilliant series!!

I received a copy of this book in a Goodreads giveaway.

I absolutely love Call the Midwife, both the TV series and the three books on which it was originally based, so I was really looking forward to reading this book. Although it was not on quite the same level, it was a very enjoyable read. The characters are likable, and it was interesting to watch their growth both individually and in their relationships with each other. I also enjoyed the university setting and the descriptions of how the training is accomplished. I would guess that maybe only half of the book actually dealt with activities of a midwife, and those parts were definitely my favorites. I look forward to reading the other two books in this series!

Such a a great and relaxing read!!! I loved that it was different then my usual thrillers, mysteries, and romance reads. This book was unputdownable. It took me less then 24 hours to finish it. It kept me very interested. The author was able to convey how the main character's anxiety made life hard for her. It was written so well that I was able to understand and feel her anxiety. I liked the fact that it explained how she overcome the obstacles her anxiety caused. I also like the story of friendship as well. The ending had me wanting more. I look forward to reading the next book in the series.

Thank you to @rachelsrandomresources for inviting me on the blog tour for this book and to @jerowneywriter for allowing me to read and review your book.
.

This book is about Violet an 18 year old who was starting her first year at university to become a midwife.
She moves into her shared accommodation with best friend Zoe and soon to be very good friend Luke!
👶🏼
She had to battle with her low self esteem, anxiety and panic attacks but was determined not to let it overcome her and steal her dream.
After lots of hard work and determination she completes her first year.
👶🏼
You get to see all parts of midwifery including delivery a baby at which point I beamed from ear to ear so proud of her myself.

The housing is for 4 and they meet one roommate, Luke, but the other roommate is assumed to be forthcoming. Victoria becomes the main character in the story line. The story continues with the reader following Victoria through her placements and the training is part classwork and part following and participating with an instructor in actual midwifery. The reader learns about Victoria's life and what has happened in the past and in the present that affects her attending school. It's quite interesting and educational. I certainly learned a lot about being a midwife and having babies. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
