This anthology has a couple of writers I like, so I decided to give it a chance. I wasn't expecting full sized books, I thought it was just short stories, but hey, this was even better. As with all anthologies, it has some good and some bad stories. My main issue with them was no real cohesion between them. They all are supposed to be in the same universe, some even share a few characters and even interact between them, but then, some important things are not shared. On some books, it's absolutely taboo to be friends with vampires, while others have some vampires working along E.V.I.E., then in some the rules are certain ways, and then in the next book those rules no longer apply. Some shows certain races and hierarchies, while others have realms and different dimensions, but the most obvious one is how the vampires die, in one book they explode into dust, in another one they collapse on themselves before turning to dust, in another they burst in flames and turn to dust... they all end up becoming dust, just take different paths there, but still there's a difference.
In general the books have some kickass slayers that find themselves some good mates, but as with everything, there are some that just didn't click with me, while others I really liked. There's also some that had a satisfying final, while others ended in cliffhangers, something I really, really hate, especially when I don't know if we are going to get a second part.
Bulletproof Damsel by Amelia Hutchins: From what I've seen, this one is a favorite for most, but it's the one I liked the least. True, is fast paced, full of twists, secret revelations and cool characters, and I know most people just love that, but it also has all the things I hate. First of all, So, in this case, the bad outweighs the good, at least in my case. So, I know most won't agree, but I didn't like it.
Dancing with the Flames by Anna Edwards: This is a story for those who like unlikely pairs, fated mates, prophecies, and all that jazz. It has the typical bad guy that likes to torment his victims and it's the epitome of evil and that seems invincible, but of course, there's a prophecy that shows how to kill him and our main characters are the only ones who can do it. It has a couple interesting twists that make the story interesting. What happens in the final battle, I didn't expect, but once that's revealed, it's easy to see how it will end. In general, it was very satisfying, and I liked how it played with the theme.
Immortal Hearts by C.R. Jane: I liked this one, even if it was really, really predictable. I mean, I wasn't sure the how, but I knew what it would turn out to happen, it was just pretty obvious, and it didn't quite have a cliffhanger, but almost? I mean, just when it's getting interesting, it ends, and we really, really need a second part. Basically, the story is about a girl with a weird curse? blessing? that brings misfortune to those who wrong her. She is an orphan and ends up as a foster kid with a rich family, and it turns out that her new siblings are also kind of her mates? So they have to hide their attraction, and just as they are about to graduate and go away to fully explore it, the three of them (yes, three) are killed by vampires, as the people at E.V.I.E. explained to her when recruiting her. Then some things happen, and she discovers some things, and when we are getting to the interesting part, the book ends...
Sanguine Souls by Claire Marta: This one was weird, it was groundhog day demonic version. It was crazy because there was a point where you no longer know what the hell is real and what's not, and every time they repeat the 48hrs they are trapped in, things change. It was certainly different, and for a moment I was not sure what was going on, and it became a little frustrating, but eventually everything clears up and you get a very good, satisfying ending. It was a wild ride, but oh so worth it.
Genocide by Dee Garcia: This one was hard to get into, it has the typical tortured character with a tragic backstory, I have to say it was pretty sad, but I didn't like the character very much, she was kind of annoying. And for a book about a vampire slayer there wasn't much slaying, it was more of a relationship book, with a triad theme. The book also feels kind of incomplete, like I needed something extra, there's a bunch of questions in the air, and one very big issue that wasn't addressed and that could change the dynamics completely.
The Slayer Witch by Elle Christensen: A slayer witch with trust issues, and a shifter that doesn't want a mate, until he finds his true mate. The main theme is how to convince the witch that they are true mates and belong together. It was very interesting to see this little witch try to deny the attraction between them, and then see her walls crumbling down. We get to the end of their mate issue, but, there are a lot of other stuff going on that it's kept to the side, and that I really, really wanted to see resolved. So, downside, there's a lot of story we don't get, plus side, the next two books are ready for pre-order, and well, I know when I will get the rest of the story, and I can't tell how much I appreciate knowing I will get to read the rest of the story instead of being left in suspense.
Bond Deeper Than Blood by K Webster: So, no, didn't like this. I mean, it was really emotional, with a tragic backstory and deep connections, but for me, it didn't make sense. Let's forget about the weird relationships and the fact that they all hate vampires, but then they are not bad, but then there's realms jumping and then enemies become lovers, but no, it didn't work for me. Don't know, didn't click for me.
Blue Bloods by Kimbra Swain: I love strong characters and complicated relationships, even if I hate the "I will never surrender", followed by surrender. This one threw me off a lot, because it was the more accepting of vampires in all the books, with them even working along the E.V.I.E. slayers. The dynamics of the vampires and how they self-police was really interesting. The love/relationship part was very interesting, and I liked the dynamics at the end, even if it was hard at first to get a read on the characters and understand them. This one is one of the bests in the anthology.
Violet Slays by Lexi C. Foss: This one I was so glad for it, because we got glimpses of Violet in Slayer Witch, and I really wanted more about her, and it seems I did, sooner that I intended. This one is about a huge misunderstanding that had been brewing for decades! And it starts really bad, and then it get's solved and open the doors for a new reality and a new relationship. Very satisfying, very hot, and yes, I also want a sequel for this one, hope to get it.
Fae's Hunter by Lily Archer: Another book that goes to another realm and goes away from the usual. Also, another case of fated mates, Fae edition. We have a small misunderstanding, but what I really liked about this one, is that it's not a case of the guy being incredible strong and having to save the damsel in distress, like in most of the others, in this book when we say that the slayer kicks ass, she really does, no help needed. One of my favorites.
Midnight Kissed by Mila Young: This one felt very disconnected from the other books, mainly because it referred to E.V.I.E. as the Org, and because of that, it felt like it was just a vampire's book that was thrown in here, but that was not really part of it. Again, it was hard for me to connect to these characters, and it felt like many things were left in the air, and unlike other books in the anthology, I have no desire to look for the continuations.
Slay All Day by Rochelle Paige: So, I felt like this one fit better with the others, it had a connection in lore and characters with Slayer Witch. The book was light on the vampires and focused more on the mate bonding between two shifters, so the name, Slay all day it's kind of misleading, still, it was an entertaining story, drama free, good for a quick light reading.
Blessed Curse by Sandra R Neeley: Again, the lore wasn't exactly like the ones in the others, a few rules of the vampires were different, but the story itself, was good. We have another really tragic story and some misunderstood vampires. We have some revenge, mates, and magic. I really liked the end, when all misunderstandings are cleared and explained and we finally get our happy ending.
