The world Troya knew has just been torn apart. Her lovers and friends are sheltering her from the truth about just how bad it is outside Ontonagon, but all of that takes second place to the strange duality inside her that comes with the memories of her past life—the life where she and the powerful, treacherous demon who runs the city were enemies…and so much more.
While the human part of Troya just wants to regain some sense of normalcy the other, older, part of her is angry and bent on revenge. Troya can’t help but become more aware of the growing powers within her and the needs of the supernaturals around her, who aren’t all quite what they seem.
*The Gods and Demons series is a spin off from the Gesa’s Menagerie series. While it can be read on its own, reading the Menagerie series first will provide more depth to the world and characters and is strongly recommended.
Author’s Note: I was tired of reading the same old thing over and over again in reverse harem. Sick of all alpha male and fainting female all the time—and desperate to be able to tell the male characters apart—I try my best to infuse some variety into my stories. You’ve been warned.
Story length definitions: Flash fiction: 200-2,000 words Short story: 1,500-7,500 words Novelette: 7,500-15,000 words *Novella: 15,000-40,000 words* Novel: 50,000 words and up.
*The Gods and Demons books are NOVELLAS of between 35,000-45,000 words. *This is a series. There will be unresolved plot threads at times/ occasional cliff hangers. This first book DOES have a cliffhanger (though some plot arcs are completed as well). I generally will not do that thing that some authors do where you get an incomplete book that just stops in the middle. Some arcs will be completed or complete for “now,” but there will be lead-ins to the next book in the series. *Do NOT read this series if you are easily offended. The series will contain: mentions of past trauma (of ANY kind), adult language (that’s cursing kids, lots of it), and sexual content (possibly including male/female, male/male, female/female, male/male/female, female/female/male and any other combination you can think of.)
Sometimes our greatest strengths come from our deepest challenges. I write magic and romance, starring a cast of creatures with feathers, fins, and teeth. My books include paranormal romance, urban fantasy, and fantasy romance--with the occasional steampunk or alien story thrown in just for kicks. My pan heart firmly believes love is love, so you'll see straight, LGBTQIA, monogamous, reverse harem, and poly relationships in my work. My favorite theme is overcoming our inner demons and the insecurities that hold us back. I also advocate for self-development and mental health and dabble in non-fiction as time allows. I love the outdoors and still hope to be abducted by fae! (I may have more in common with my characters than I care to admit.)

Troya frustrated me throughout this book with her stubbornness to not find out the truth of Derek's actions in their past lives until the very end of the book yet kept taking advantage of his offers like working at his private clinic to gain experience and having him fix her issues with her previous internship. Faced with all his charitable and protective work, she continued to think the worst of Derek, and as many of the characters also told her, she often metaphorically stomped around like a spoiled child with her hands over her ears when things didn't go her way.
I'm glad that she finally sat down in the end with Derek and Orion to figure out the story from their perspective, but it was incredibly annoying until then. Unfortunately, the actual telling of the demon's history has been saved for the next book, so onto the next book in the series we go.
P.S. I'm still not totally convinced what Chike and Rhys finds attractive about Troya. The only compliment I can recall is that they thought she was beautiful. Troya seemed to be rather woe-is-me IMO which I personally find rather annoying, but I do enjoy their intimate scenes regardless. -------- Ratings - completed series: #1 Fates, Fins, and Fangs: ★★★☆☆ #2 Wishes, Wings, and Woes (this book): ★★★☆☆ #3 Horns, Hugs, and Hunger: ★★★★☆ #4 Demons, Danger, and Demigods: ★★★☆☆
This part of Troya's story was a bit annoying since her inner goddess is released and she is completely unhinged. I understand why, but I had to use patience in not giving up on her.
As usual, I devoured the latest installment of this series as soon as possible and enjoyed every moment of it. Troya continues to grow as a character as she regains more memories of her previous lives and Derek White’s connection to it. Her relationships with her boyfriends grow deeper and more solid. And Draper’s world-building continues to evolve as we learn both about new magics and new paranormal creatures and societies.
But when I looked up after reading…I realized that nothing much had happened. A few minor shifts in existing plot lines, but no major developments. Overall, this story sets up future action and builds a bit on previous drama. It does it well, but new readers to this series should be prepared that not all installments will feature epic action and dramatic reveals.
I still look forward to seeing where Troya, her relationships, and her greater world go next!
Since I don't normally write reviews unless I have something specific to say, here's the break down of how I rate my books...
1 star... This book was bad, so bad I may have given up and skipped to the end. I will avoid this author like the plague in the future.
2 stars... This book was not very good, and I won't be reading any more from the author.
3 stars... This book was ok, but I won't go out of my way to read more, But if I find another book by the author for under a dollar I'd pick it up.
4 stars... I really enjoyed this book and will definitely be on the look out to pick up more from the series/author.
5 stars... I loved this book! It has earned a permanent home in my collection and I'll be picking up the rest of the series and other books from the author ASAP.
Loving the series so far. It’s really different to the look a like tropes and I’m seriously appreciating the fact each character is an individual and discernible from each other. It’s well written, a good storyline and I can’t wait to see where how the rest of the storyline unfolds
An excellent read! We continue where we last left our heroes, and get lots of good angst from our leading lady, Troy, about her past and present coming together. We love a secret identity come to light!! This book had some spice but I’m looking for more still, haha. I’m insatiable- like Troya and her (growing?!) harem. So excited for the next book!
This book ended on a huge cliff hanger. It is very good. I can't wait for the next in the series. Getting a little frustrated at Trpya being obstinate and obtuse.
Would love to see the next book soon, this series almost as good as the Gesa series, but need to know what happens next. Good characters and story line.
I always find it difficult to review and rate Kaye Draper’s books because they parts of the whole. There is no real individual storyline in this book, it is simply part of the longer whole series. This means there is a cliffhanger, even though the next book is already out. But, as I said, it makes it hard to really review this one part of the whole without reading everything. It’s like reviewing the first fifth of a book without seeing the rest of it.
However, I really enjoyed reading it. It had the author’s usual excellent world building, creative character building and intriguing storyline.
The world just imploded and Troya suddenly finds herself without a regular schedule, with her college being closed and the hospital telling her to leave from her last day as an intern there because of a demon’s behaviour. She is bored and lonely because everyone else is out saving the populous. Eventually Orion arrives and offers to let her intern at Derek White’s clinic for supernaturals. Desperate for diversion she takes her chance and is thrust into the supernatural world head first.
I really am enjoying learning much more about Derek and Orion’s history through this series. They were characters that always intrigued me in Gesa's Menagerie: Volume 1and this series is revealing. I’m also enjoying the way Troya views things as she thought herself human for her entire life and suddenly everything is different, including people she cares about. It’s a different way of looking at the world that we first saw in Gesa’s Menagerie and it’s an enjoyable one, as she’s handling it pretty well.
As the book ended on a cliffhanger, I really need to go and download the next book to find out what happens next. I recommend this series highly. I’d probably give the book more stars if I knew how the rest of the series panned out!
