Very cute drawings, relevant questions with answers in the fold-up that you have to flip.

Good way to introduce young minds to the death topic.

Jack (now 6) has been bursting into tears at the thought of death (especially the thought of his mum and I dying) for years. He’s a sensitive soul. Lily (just turned 4) is less sensitive, but becoming more aware. We’re gentle with the kids (especially Jack) when discussing concepts of death, but we do need to prepare them, gradually for this. I googled possible books at my dear wife’s suggestion, and came up with this one (a library borrow). Personally, I think it’s WAY too overcrowded with eight or more lift-a-flaps per dual page open – basically each one is an answer to an (animal character) kid’s question about death. The questions – and answers – are perfect, but they really didn’t need so many of them. I wish this was a bit simpler and less overwhelming. On the other hand, I read this to the kids a few times and I guess all the flaps kept them (especially Lily) engaged and I think it all started to sink in for them - that difficult, confronting topic of death. There were no tears, at least (from them, anyway, I was totally chocking back tears myself in the second half).

A well written book that helps children understand death in a simple and meaningful way. From family members and friends to pets to plants to things that can’t die like their beloved stuffed animals or rocks. Lift the flaps helps engage the questions and answers as you read along and helps them understand some of their feelings as well.

A simple and gentle way to talk to your child about death. They speak on Why do things die?, Is it ok to talk about dying?, What happens when someone dies?, Can I shout and cry and hide away?, How can I stop being sad?, And ways to keep happy memories alive when someone you love dies.

Upea lasten tietokirja kuoleman biologiasta.
