Alice (that's "Iron" to her followers) is desperate to earn her best friend's forgiveness, keep her villainous boss happy, and stay away from pesky capes. (Especially a certain hero who is as hunkalicious as he is arrogant.)
And one more thing. Alice is determined to destroy Shadow. The scary-as-hell villain has been rampaging through her town, leaving a trail of bodies in his wake. Shadow seems unstoppable, but can Alice succeed where the town's greatest hero failed? Her only hope may be in finally learning to rely on her friends.
The showdown with Shadow is coming, and it's going to be bloody.
Can a lowly henchman save a town full of heroes?
Find out in the final installment of The Henchman's Survival Guide. J Bennett's mesmerizing and futuristic henchman series is heavy on the action and will keep readers guessing until the very end.
Join Alice, Adan, and Sequoia for this nail-biting conclusion… and hold on tight!
J Bennett lives and writes in San Diego. Her writing partner is a bunny named Avalon who contributes to each manuscript by trying to eat it. His adorableness is his primary strength as a writer.
J Bennett is a professional copywriter and an author who loves asking that oh-so-dangerous question – “What if?” She currently writes a paranormal adventure series, Girl With Broken Wings, and a tongue-in-cheek short story series, The Vampire’s Housekeeper Chronicles, featuring a very old, very grouchy, very non-sparkly vampire and his patient housekeeper.
As with the first two novels in the trilogy, this final book was solidly plotted and moved towards a satisfying ending. We follow Alice, AKA Iron, as she and a couple of unlikely allies try to find the murderous villain who's breaking all the rules (or would be, if there were any actual rules).
The prose was clear and easy to read, with only a few typos that caught my eye. As before, I enjoyed being immersed in the world the author has created, even if I definitely wouldn't want to live there. Given the previous setup, the events in this book weren't a huge surprise, although it was fun to see exactly how Alice and her diverse mates achieved their goals.
For me, this book didn't feel quite as strong as the previous two. Perhaps it's because Alice spends a lot of time feeling guilty about such a wide range of things: some justifiably, some less so. And yet, when she needs to set in motion a mad plan, or to have the cooperation of someone she (thinks she) has wronged, she never has a problem securing anyone's cooperation. It gave me the impression that her sense of guilt wasn't actually affecting anyone around her, and therefore the guilt felt not so significant.
Alice's adventures continue in Little Big City and the author does an excellent job of continuing to build on the action and suspense of the previous two books. This is one of my favorite superhero series and its highly re-readable. I recommend the entire series and this book does a nice job of bringing everything to a close, as well as commenting on the direction our society is going in.
All I can say is wow! I thoroughly enjoyed the final book in this series and what Alice had to go through to finally stop Shadow. All the characters were quite believable and entertaining. My only complaint was that I wished there had been more lens time for Gold and Mermaid 😋😉
All in all, a well written story

The characters, writing and editing are superb in this series. The emotional content of Alice/Iron is realistic. This is the first series in a couple of years where the freebie caused me to buy the rest of the series!
