Meanwhile, a sickness is spreading through the land and new monsters are terrorizing Alveria. Mari and Kai might be the only people who can stop it. But a secret connection to the beasts could tear Mari and Kai apart. If the Alverian council finds out, their bond could be forcibly broken, but if they can’t stop the sickness it could already be too late. Can they save their bond and stop Alveria from falling into chaos?

Ava Richardson writes epic page-turning Young Adult Fantasy books. She creates lovable characters and drops them into intricate worlds that are barely contained within your eReader. Ava has written 21 YA dragon fantasy series, including her bestselling series Return of the Darkening and her recent series, Destia's Dragon Shifter War.

She grew up on a steady diet of fantasy and science fiction books handed down from her two big brothers – and despite being dog-eared and missing pages, she loved escaping into the magical worlds that those authors created. Her favorites were the ones about dragons; where they’d swoop, dive and soar through the skies of these enchanted lands.

3,5/5. This book and mostly what this author is writing is good for something like that even if it wasn’t that much for me. It reminds me a bit of Eragon, which should interest a lot of people. For me this was a bit too easy and light and not much originality. Everything work in a good way don’t get me wrong, but just look at how many book the author has write in the past few years and you will understand that writing that much, well., the originality will suffer from it. But in the end it’s still very readable and god easy light fantasy with dragon. I like my fantasy to be a bit more mature, more intense and with character with a bit more complex psychology. Personal liking 2,5/5, but easily 4/5 potential so I’m going with a fair 3,5/5.

Waaaaay too many words...

This story could have been told in a lot fewer words, sentences and descriptors. It’s a good story, it just went on too long. I won’t continue this series...

This is book one of the Alveria Dragon Akademy Part 3: Reign of Chaos and follows seventeen year old trainee dragon tamer, Mari Asadottier, as she comes to the end of her three terms at the Akademy, having been unsuccessful so far in managing to bond with a dragon. Today was her last chance and she will now be failed from her course and kicked out, with no chance of ever becoming part of the Dragon’s Guard, like her father. It is all she has ever wanted. She sneaks into an evening event, which students are not invited to, looking for her tutor, to beg for some more time to try and bond with a dragon.

She bumps into the Deputy Councillor and spills his ale all over her front, but isn’t reprimanded. Finally finding her mentor, she is given until the day of graduation to see if she can manage. Whilst looking out the window of the tower, she sees a large dragon and is fascinated by its colours. She realises this is Crown Prince Kai Afkarr-Younger, who is due to become king in about ten years, when he can no longer transform into his dragon form. Kai’s problem is that his magic is overwhelming, he has no control over it and he has been stuck in his dragon form for years and has been unable to even bond with a dragon tamer, who would assist him to regain his human form. Until he can do so, he can never become king!

Mari lost her mother in a house fire when she was young and has had nightmares about a fire monster ever since. A very similar monster tries to attack the king and Prince Kai and Mari’s father tries to save the king, telling Mari to protect the prince. Her father ends up buried under rubble, as the monster disappears and the king collapses. When the Dragon’s Guard go to investigate, they are struck by a sleeping sickness. Mari ends up following them against the leader’s orders, as her father is too injured to go, and finds all the guards asleep. More monsters arise in the surroundings and only Mari and Prince Kai are awake enough to try and fight them. Their normal weapons and magic aren’t working.

Monsters are spreading all around the city and lands of Alveria, with the sleeping sickness also spreading. The Dragon’s Guard are put under quarantine by the city Councillors, leaving only Mari and Prince Kai to fight against these strange monsters, but Mari has been keeping the secret of her link to the fire monster to herself. Mari is drawn to kai’s dragon form and there may finally be a chance for her to form a bond with a dragon, but she is not the expected type of student or person, for such an important and regal dragon. There is something strange about the spread of this new sickness and the best brains of the land are trying to find a cure. Mari and Kai must try to form a bond to save all of Alveria, before it is too late. A fascinating tale and lots of action with dragons, monsters, heroes and everything in between! A great read, especially for all that love dragons. I received an ARC copy of this book from BookSprout and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.

Slightly different title name from Amazon - but same cover

Mari Asadottir, dragon tamer trainee, was running out of time as she searched the crowded reception room for her mentor, Master Farrah. If Mari could not bond with a dragon by that evening, she would be cast out of the Alveria Dragon Akademy as a failure and never become one of the Dragon Guard like her father. She needed to be granted more time. But she could not find Master Farrah as she crossed the room and looked out a window to the courtyard. There was a dragon she didn’t recognize standing alone, beautiful red-gold scales radiating power. He was magnificent! She heard two women behind her talking critically about his not being able to transform back to human, and she knew right away this must be Kai Afkarr-Younger, the Crown Prince, born with affinity for all four elements, perhaps the most powerful dragon Alveria had ever known. But he was rumored to be violent and destructive and had to be kept in chains because of his uncontrollable magic. No one had seen him in years, but there he was now!

Before Mari could move, she heard Master Farrah, spun around, and ran right into the Deputy Councilor, spilling his drink all over him. Luckily he was kind and smiled at her, but Master Farrah had again disappeared. As she ran off to her room to change her stained clothes, Master Farrah spoke to her. Mari begged for another chance, again, so Master Farrah gave her the two weeks to graduation to bond with a dragon. She was glad she hadn’t approached the dragon in the courtyard since the Akademy had been trying to hand-pick someone for him with incredible strength and patience to deal with his troubled magic.

At the ceremony to hear the new prophecy, which she was almost late for, Mari was concerned that she still felt uneasy. At the end of the reading, the crowd pointed at the sky where they could see the palace burning! Kai took off to see what was wrong. There was an explosion knocking Kai to the ground and he saw something crawl out of the exploded tower, fire springing up everywhere it touched. Mari’s father is injured, the dragon guard and others are plagued with a sleeping sickness, and Mari ends up bonding with the powerful, unstable Prince Kai. Can the two of them work with each other to battle the evil for the sake of Alveria and their people? Will Mari recognize the fiery creature as the one who haunts her nightmares? The only one each knows they can trust is each other.

This book is outstanding with a fast story line, great world-building, and well-defined characters who come alive on the pages! Who or what is attacking the kingdom? Grab your copy and join the adventure to find answers!

Thank you to NetGalley and the author, Ava Richardson, for the chance to review this book, which was just released on April 30th.

I just downloaded the book today around lunch time, and aside from nature calls, the book kept me rooted the rest of the day. The book has a familiar feel, for those who favor Anne McCaffrey or Mercedes Lackey, as it features young adults training to assume leadership roles under trying circumstances, accompanied by intelligent magical beast partners. The primary characters are Trainee Mari and Prince Kai. The development of their separate characters and their relationship proceeded quickly and with sufficient force to keep the reader's interest focused. There are numerous supporting characters, not unlike what one would expect in other school oriented fantasy, including the school building itself, not unlike Hogwarts. I found the author led me with a nice trail of clues about how the plot would unfold, but still left me guessing even up to the last couple of chapters of the book. Thoroughly entertaining! I found myself visualizing how some scenes would look on the big screen and I am hopeful that could be a reality someday. This is exactly the sort of book perfect for my nieces and nephews as birthday or Christmas gifts.

The book includes violent scenes, which are not so graphic as to cause distress for younger audience members, but sufficiently exciting to compel even veteran readers to keep the pages turning. The author placed the book's events largely within a city and nearby countryside, but the country and world were not very detailed, as the author emphasized the development of the two primary characters. I appreciate the nice color map at the beginning of the book, given that this book visits several sites within a city, and the book is the first of a planned trilogy which I expect to leave this city. However, maps for the city, and maybe the palace and Akademy, would also have been nice. I hope some of the secondary characters get more development in upcoming books, but those closest to the action received ample attention.

The only complaint I have is that I have to wait for the next two books to be written and released, as I want them now! Again, my sincere thanks to Ava Richardson and NetGalley for the chance to review the book!

They both think they have failed in their duties.

Another great beginning to a series.

Mari has been a dragon tamer trainee for the last 3 years and has never been able to bond with a dragon. This book starts with Mari's search for the one master who might be willing to let her still try to find a dragon to bond with so she is not kicked out of the Akademy at midnight. Mari also has this unique gift which allows she to create objects, which comes in handy to help when there is a difficult guest at a party.

Kai is the crown prince and has not been able to find a tamer or the ability to return to human form for the last couple of years. He has so much magic that most are scared of him and unable to help him calm the internal storm. He has not been around large groups for a while because of the chance he might hurt someone if he loses control, so being at a party is not his idea of fun.

When part of a prophecy is revealed, a monster attacks. Mari's father orders her to protect the prince. She tries but feels like she freezes because this monster is the same one she has had nightmares of for years.

This attack is just the start of this adventure and the trials that both Mari and Kai must face to find what they need. Along the way they find some interesting characters including a god.

This novel was an enjoyable read by Ms. Richardson. She brings back back characters from previous novels and builds her stories from those, leading to new troubles and adventures. Mari Asadottier has always wanted to be part of the Dragon guard, like her father, but the problem is she has been unable to bond with a dragon. If she does not bond with one, she will be expelled. Prince Kai Afkarr-Younger cannot control his magic and has been struck in his dragon form. No one has been able to form a bond with him until Mari. Both do not trust themselves, but they need each other and seem to work well together. There is an evil that brings Chaos and nightmares are coming to life, spreading like a plague. Kai and Mari work together to build their bond and find the cause of this plague, but it is no ordinary one. With pressure coming from all sides, Mari and Kai have multiple battles they need to work through if they want to save Alveria. Trouble is brewing and Mari and Kai do not know who they can trust, but they know they can trust each other. But overcoming their fears is whole other battle.
I received this novel from Booksprouts as an ARC. Thank you! All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Added to my select list of books with dragons: https://fantasybooksland.com/list-of-...

In this first book of the series, we get to know a heroine, Mari Asadottier, who is a dragon tamer trainee at the Alveria’s Dragon Akademy.

Mari is about to be kicked out from the Akademy because she has been unable to bond with a dragon. As she is focused on postponing her expulsion, an unexpected attack takes place in Alveria, leaving her father injured, and many dragon guards under the spell of a strange plague.

For this reason, Mari has to team up with Prince Kai, who has been unable to shift from his dragon form for two years already and has a hard time controlling his magic.

Such a powerful attack was initiated by monsters that won’t stop at a single battle, bringing chaos upon their kingdom. Mari and Kai have no other option than to trust each other. They have to save not only themselves but everyone in Alveria.

Find out how Mari and her dragon manages to survive and fight for their people. It’s an adventure full of action that will certainly keep your attention until the last page of the book.

I received this Audio copy for free from the author/publisher. I am leaving this honest review freely, without consideration.

I thoroughly enjoyed the read. I felt it had an original take on its magic system. I have far from read everything, so it may not be so original, but it was for me.

The story was well written, paced well, and why some of the plot was easy to guess, the ride was fun, and there were a couple of small unexpected bits to add the overall arc. The two main characters ran on a similar and parallel character arc, helping each other to overcome their issues.

The book had a satisfying conclusion, while still setting up a sequel. I look forward to book 2 in this series to be sure. I liked it quite a bit. If 4.5 stars was an option, that’s where I would have classified it!

As a note, when I rate on a scale of 1 to 5, I use 4 as a good book that I enjoyed, and may well re-read in the future. I reserve 5 stars for incredible over the top achievements, which are far and few between...

Dragon’s Guardian is well worth the read! Ava Richardson yet again draws you into the world of dragons and good and evil! Will Mari Asadottier be able to look her worst nightmare face on and defeat the plague that is sweeping across Alveria? She has been at the Academy for three terms and is yet to bond with a dragon, will she make the grade and be a part of the Dragon Guard or be kicked out??
Prince Kai Afkarr-Younger has been struggling for two years to transform back into his human form and so far has been unsuccessful bonding with a tamer until he meets Mari. Are they going to be able to become a force to be reckoned with in such a short amount of time and save Alveria from Chaos? This story keeps you guessing and has some surprises along the way, can’t wait for the next adventure, thanks Ava Richardson!

*** I’m volunteering to review this arc ***

This story is fast paced and has some good characters. Mari wants to be in the Dragon Guard like her father. But for to be able to do that she has to bond with a dragon and graduate the Academy. Prince Kai is stuck in his dragon form and is trying to find someone to be his tamer. That can help him with his strong magic and bring him back to his human form. They both meet and become bonded, but they must figure out what is going on to the kingdom and who’s behind it. Will Mari graduate? Will there bond be enough? Will they be able to help the kingdom and the people from the attacks? Will they figure out who’s behind it and will they stop it in time before it’s to late? I look forward to reading the second book.

Dreams that kill. Mari only has two weeks to bond with a dragon or she will be kicked out of the Akademy and sent to a human school. But when the coronation is attacked by a fire monster, her father is severely injured, many of the dragon guard are injured and quarantined, and she ends up bonding with the powerful, but erratic and unstable Prince Kai. Now these two misfits, with hurts and fears from the past must work together to save Alveria. Or the kingdom and mankind will be taken over by a being bent on destruction and CHAOS. I read the whole book in 2 days despite my plan to finish it in some weeks, It is easy reading due to the many challenges every character has to face, it catches your attention so easily.

The kingdom of Alveria has managed to give me another favorite character with Dragon Guardian, the situations the protagonist faces, made me realize the struggles and expectations I face in real life, this has been a great opportunity to find hope using fantasy, definitely is worth a try, not disappointed at all. I can't wait for the next book in this series.

This installment of the Dragon Akademy is amazingly well written. Ava Richardson thoroughly details the characters and sets the scene for them to come to life. The main characters, Mari and Kai, are detailed by their emotions and struggles with their past. A lot of questions are answered here about the treachery, deceit and lies. Can they overcome their own personal struggles to come together and defeat the new monsters created by the plague? What will Chaos come up with next? To say more would give away key points of the story. I cannot wait for the next one.

Dragon's Guardian by Ave Richardson is book 1 of Reign of Chaos series in the Alveria Dragon's Akademy. This book follows Mari, who cannot bond to a dragon, and Prince Kai, who is stuck in dragon form. While these two work on their bond, monsters start terrorizing the kingdom.

I enjoyed the book but it is not distinct. I have read a variety of Ava Richardson books and this is not a stand out. If you have read Richardson before you know what you are getting. I think where the monsters came from was interesting and I enjoy diving into Richardson's world.

Three stars for an enjoyable read. Thank you to NetGalley, Ava Richardson, and Relay Publishing. This was an honest review.

This book is more of a mystery into a virus that causes terrible monsters that are created out of people's dreams. While I loved the fantasy element, with dragons, and the prince and main character working together, developing a relationship, the entire virus and monster part wasn't enjoyable to read. That aside, it's an exciting book, with lots of adventure & action, and great elements to it, but I won't be reading the sequels.

Audiobook
The narrator kept mixing all the voices up between each character. Sometimes the prince sounded like a little girl talking. Only once did he sound like an older man. The rest was interchangeable with the voices of other characters.

While I feel that a school setting is a bit cliche in today's media. I loved how the characters are written, and how they devolpe as the story progresses. I also like how it is not just another Dragonriders Of Perm esque story. I like the authors unique take on how the nature of dragons work in the story, as well as the relationship that the dragons have to humans.
As a fantasy, and Dragon book fan. This was a wonderful read

I completed the advance read of Dragon's Guardian and first want to say thanks for the opportunity. I have read all of Ava Richardson's books and this one did not disappoint, it was even more action packed than previous books and I couldn't put it down. The characters were well developed and the story never had a dull moment. I'm also very pleased that the ending leaves opportunity for continuing the story. Sitting on ready for the next episode.

Wow my return to Alvaria has left me wanting more. Superb writing from Ava Richardson with well rounded characters. From the start your pulled in with the hope of the tamer getting her dragon. Then the fights with evil Chaos while training to strengthen their bond and survive. The crown prince who’s thoughts are on containing his magic, or will his magic get the better of him.
Please do give this book a read and you will not be disappointed.

Dragons guardian is an excellent story full of mystery and adventure. Excellent young adult coming-of-age story is the hero and heroine face many trials both from external close and internal threat. It is a story of overcoming, friendship, and courage. Ava Richardson brings a unique voice to each character and pays such careful attention to her writing style so that it feels is like I walked the halls and streets of that world myself. I am eagerly waiting for the next installment in this series of books.

A new wonder story in the Alveria Dragon's Akademy series. Mari, a dragon tamer trainee, as yet has not found a dragon to tame and time is running out.
Kai, a dragon without a tamer, with a powerful magic he can't control. He, too, is running out of time.
Then there are the monsters that escape from people's dreams wreaking havoc throughout the land. Add these together and you have a humdinger of a story. I love the characters and the storyline. I can't wait to read the next story.

As always, Ava Richardson has outdone herself in yet another fantastic book. It held my interest from the beginning to the end. All of the characters each had a certain role to play and all were well written. Even how the creation of the monsters in this book was a big element on how this book read. Will be getting the next 2 when they come out.

Chaos rules the darkness, tearing Alveria apart, sowing discord and strife

Ms. Richardson has dug deep in her history of Alveria and Akademy and brought a new and exciting storyline for us. Rich new characters with bravery and brotherhood to fight the creations of Chaos as it fights to destroy order. Great characters, fresh new amazing storyline with familiar locations and structure build this tale. A terrific read!

First of all a big thank you to the author, publishers and Netgalley for sending me a copy of this book to read and review.

This was a light and easy fantasy to read and enjoy. I do tend to enjoy my fantasies a little more complex but this was enjoyable. I absolutely love dragons in fantasy so this was up my street in that regard. I found the characters to be likeable and the plot was good. However I did find that this tended to be a little slow in places and did drag a little.

This was a quick easy read that hooked me from the start and I really enjoyed it. I was particularly intrigued by the creatures they are fighting and the way they are spawned which created an interesting twist on the usual dragons and magic fantasy tale. I hadn't read any of the author's previous books but that didn't affect my enjoyment of this book.
