Star Shadow #3

Hazardous Things

Rate this book

Felix Humphries can’t even remember the first time he crushed on Star Shadow’s drummer, Max McCloud.

It’s been an embarrassingly long time, but he’s still never acted on his feelings. One, because Max is his older brother’s best friend. Two, because Max is also his friend. Three, Max is technically his boss. And four, worst of all, Max is straight.

But when Max unexpectedly needs a caretaker for a few weeks, Felix can’t leave his friend in the lurch. He’s all ready to suffer through being so close but not close enough, when the unexpected happens.

Max isn’t straight after all, and what Max wants is Felix—but only in his bed, not in his heart.

Hazardous Things is the third book in the Star Shadow series and should not be read as a standalone.

Disclaimer: I beta read this for Beth so I am perhaps a wee bit biased but, even so, my review will be as honest as they always are and gives my true feelings for this book.

Book three in the Star Shadow book could be read as a standalone, but I honestly wouldn't recommend it because you'd be missing out on a lot of background and the nuances which come from seeing Max and Felix interact before this story.

I loved this one, it's missing most of the angst that marked the first two books in the series, but that's not to say there aren't tensions along the way.

There's nothing I love more than a friends to lovers story, especially when it's coupled with a whole sexual awakening theme and the realisation that you've been in love with your best friend for years without knowing it!

Snarky, steamy, and painful in places, this is a perfect book to follow on from the first two in the series and nicely sets up for the final wrap-up when we re-visit Leo and Cal.

I liked this one better than book two but still less than book one.

What worked?
-Felix and Max. 🥰
-Low angst bisexual awakening.
-Friends to lovers is my jam and this was a sweet one.

What didn’t work?
-The 85% conflict reared it’s ugly head. I found it to be something that could have easily been worked out with a little communication.
-A lot of repetitive internal monologues.
-I wanted more zing or electricity.

Still a fun addition to the series.

3.5 - 4 stars This story is about Max, drummer of Star Shadow and Felix who works for and is friends and family with some of the members of the band.
Felix will take care of Max after a knee surgery.
A lot of inner conflicts going through Felix’s head. His deep feelings for Max can never see the daylight. Max is straight and they are best friends. It’s getting harder until Max makes a proposition, to hook up. They are attracted to each other so they could hook up. Max doesn’t want more. It’s killing Felix but at last, he has something from Max.

Bad bad idea ever. It means nothing to Max and everything to Felix. Right?

Even though I love this story I had a hard time digesting all the none or vaguely communication between both men, I grind my teeth and wanted to shake someone more than once. I wanted transparency!
Max is a bit of a softy and Felix is a feisty one, both were inadequate with communication.
The story was captivating, only it was dragging on, for me a bit too long.
The secondary stories of the other members of Star Shadow are as captivating as the main.
Overall a slow-paced, nicely entertainingly written story, with lovable characters.

I really enjoyed this friends to lovers story. It’s also the third book, and I wouldn’t suggest starting here.

Max and Felix have been best friends since Star Shadow first broke up five years ago. Felix has crushed on the man the whole time, hoping the feeling was mutual.

Finally when he’d just about given up, Max starts seeing him in a new light. Things aren’t quite smooth sailing, and both men make mistakes, but in the end everything comes together beautifully.

This one was a tougher read. I think it was more confrontational in a way. Sometimes it felt like Felix hated Max because he loved him so much and for so long. I struggled with liking both Max and Felix at different times. I got frustrated with Felix's refusal to say what he wanted. I got frustrated with Max's obliviousness. I felt for Felix and his years long pain. But part of that he made a choice to experience so it was also like he brought it on himself. I typically love a sibling's best friend romance, but this didn't really feel like one. Maybe because Max and Felix are so isolated from their friends in this, maybe for the best after all.

This didn’t work for me as well as I’d hoped it would. It seems like maybe the first book is the only hit for me out of this series.

What I liked:
- Max - he was so sweet and persistent
- Bisexual awakening
- Friends to lovers

What I didn’t:
- repeated identical internal monologues
- lack of communication even though that was an explicit rule for them
- the end conflict was OTT and avoidable
- Felix was generally just a jerk at the end
- a repeated theme throughout the book was just a set up for Leo and Caleb’s next book which was annoying and unnecessary

Kinda bummed I didn’t like it more, but it wasn’t a bad read.

3.5 - Sweet, slow paced friends to lovers. Max sounds kind of demisexual? Although this isn’t stated in the book. I liked how he was written, yes he is completely oblivious to Felix’s years of pining for him but when he realises what he wants he doesn’t dilly dally about it he just jumps right in. Which is great because Felix has enough internal monologues for both of them.

I liked reading a book about a musician who actually writes, spends time making music and shows a bit more realism in the music scene - despite being a big name band he writes songs for other artists it’s not all about him being the big shot.

There is some hurt/comfort here which i always enjoy and some build up for the next book.

I liked this more than book 2, it felt like it flowed more naturally than both the first books and the characters had stronger identities but I just still wanted a bit more zing.

A pet peeve of mine in a book is the emphasis on communication with two grown adult characters failing to fulfill that. This looming lack of communication made reading this novel painful. We have the two characters Felix and Max, who were supposedly best friends... supposedly. But the book really only consisted of annoying pining, mini arguments, sex, miscommunication and a relationship that read a bit superficial to me.

A few things about the book that I disliked:
* "Banter" that's wholly predictable and gave me a stabbing pain in the head. After they got together it went something like: A-"you're an ass." B-"I thought you liked my ass." A-"*chuckles* I mean, it's a good ass." After the third variation of this, I started hefting the heaviest of sighs. Terribly unoriginal.

* Felix. Felix, Felix, Felix. I ended the book not enjoying his character. Actually, I kind of hated him if I'm being honest. He was quick to temper and sometimes sounded so unforgiving for the simplest missteps in communication known to man. He was terribly insecure in relation to his relationship with the band -as their PA- and he made that obvious. Additionally, his inner monologues bored me to death after page 200 or so. He was so caught up in Max "previously being straight" and "never being attracted to him before" that it became insufferable. I understand how vulnerable you may feel if you were in his shoes but it got grating to read about this person who outright REFUSED to be vulnerable- even a little bit- with someone he considered his closest friend.

* A small emphasis on Max being the "stupid one" and directing the book in a way where he'd have to fix the breakup. I'm glad they sort of steered away from this. He was oblivious to Felix's love for him... Ok. He then figured out Felix's attraction to him and realized his own Attraction and acted on it. He initiated, he made attempts to deepen the friendship and get to know Felix in a way he previously "neglected"(what he does for work). And all Felix did was whine. Whine about the same. Damn. Thing. "He doesn't actually like me. He doesn't want this. He doesn't, doesn't, doesn't." How about we actually use our words and the intimacy you built as friends to ASK WHAT HE WANTED. He was in a vulnerable position as well- being attracted to a man for the first time and knowing that there may be expectations from him to perform a certain way, yet he initiated almost all of the intimate moments. Mr. Whine a lot didn't even consider this.

* The book was about 100 pages too long. In the end nothing really happened. I don't think they developed intimacy deeper than the book mentioned they had 6 months prior. I also felt like it was heavily Felix centered. Not much on Max's outlook on life, how he felt day in and day out, how he wants his future to look. Essentially I don't know much about him. I felt like Felix got a chance to share his dreams for the future and almost all of Max's POV was centered on Felix and their relationship. The ending conflict that brought them together was cliched and random and I felt nothing towards it.

I was hoping I would get more from this book than I actually got. 1.5 stars.

~~I received a free copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads ~~

This is the third book in the series, and would be best read in order. Star Shadow is finally off tour and in fact taking a break ... not that these men all understand what a break really means. For Felix, the band's manager/PA it means going with his brother Leo, and Caleb, to relax, but to ensure that they keep talking to each other. For Max things are a little more complicated as he needs ACL surgery. Suddenly Felix is going to have to forgo his trip to Fiji, and spend time with his long time crush and the best friend he has been trying to avoid to save his heart... because he can't let Max down, even if it is going to be a tough few weeks.

Poor Felix is always doing the right thing by everyone, and yet is always in the shadows. He has had to watch his long time crush have the odd fling - always with women - and accept that he needs to protect himself. Now he is going to have to be very close and personal as he helps him shower, dress etc after surgery. But somehow Max gets into his head that maybe they should explore having a hookup ... it is everything Felix ever wanted, and yet seems like it will be just an experiment for Max - can he survive that?

As we see the two of them come to terms with a new reality, and the amusement that any of their friends has at them finally working out their place in each other's lives, we hope that they can get it right. Though not in the cards immediately, but with every one intent on making them see the obvious there is definitely hope - and in the meantime, they do some pretty passionate experimenting!

Troubling times expected in the next installment it would seem, but I will really enjoying seeing a happier Felix and Max!

Felix and Max were all the oblivious, best friends to lovers magic I could have hoped for. Initially, I was worried this story would be too similar to Benji and Diego's: two very close friends, in denial about their feelings for years and years, finally coming together after a grand epiphany. But even though the concept is similar, everything about Felix and Max felt so different and new.

I went into this book not knowing much at all about Felix or Max--though they are present in the earlier books, they were mostly a mystery to me. I think that's why it felt so satisfying to get to look into their brains and finally find out more about who they really are. I knew Felix was the band's PA/manager, but seeing his intelligent, logical, goal-oriented nature revealed so much about him. Despite his brain and all the logic in the world, he still fell for Max, his straight best friend. Seeing such a brainy guy succumb to his romantic side and desperately hope for his feelings to be returned gave me all the feels. Max is so deeply unaware of his non-platonic feelings for Felix that I couldn't even be mad at him for stringing him along. It's so obvious that he's never even considered what it meant that he constantly craved Felix's company.

One of the things I love most about slow-burn romances is the build-up of sexual tension. For Felix, the lust and longing have been present for years, making every innocent touch a battle to keep his heart in check. When Max finally realizes he's attracted to Felix too, all bets are off. Watching the lines blur more and more, seeing the lust finally spill over into their actions was unbelievably hot. Felix and Max's timeline may make their relationship a slow-burn, but in the context of this book they got physical quickly!

Though their passion ignited easily, Felix and Max had to let go of some deep-seated fears before they were ready to acknowledge the magnitude of their feelings. Their inner turmoil and lack of communication were the main sources of angst in this book. At times, I wanted to shake each one of them and force them to admit their deepest feelings for each other. It took some stressful, heart-wrenching situations and council from the Star Shadow members, but Felix and Max's "happily ever after" was worth it.

Felix has been in love with Max for years and has tried taking a step back to protect his own heart but when he finds out Max is undergoing surgery when the band is on a break, he's there to help with recovery. Max doesn't know why Felix has become distant recently but finds himself attracted to his best friend or more accurately, paying attention to his thoughts and feelings. An accidental walk in on a private moment brings things to a head as they think about having a physical relationship. Though, Felix has to be careful with his heart and Max has to be sure what he wants
There's a strong bond of friendship in place between the two men even before feelings are considered but Felix is getting worn down with hoping for something with Max. My heart goes to him as it's his best friend but he's sure that nothing can ever come of it. Max is wary of hurting Felix when he's not even sure what's going on with his own head and heart. When things do escalate, they are damn hot together, lust explodes whenever they have the chance to act upon it. However, there is a lot of guilt on both sides as they keep things to themselves in order to protect their own hearts from the possibility of losing their best friend. I enjoyed the relationship they have, it's hard to fight the undeniable connection that comes through in the writing. The rest of the band are still a part of the story but all off on their own breaks. They're just at the end of the phone whenever Max or Felix need someone, especially Leo as Max's best friend and Felix's brother.
Emotions run high through a lot of this book, both good and bad. Along with the relationship plot through the book, there's decisions for Felix to make about his future and drama towards the end that brings the group rushing back home.
A great addition to the Star Shadow series. So glad that Max and Felix got their story. Fans of the series and author will love it as will those who enjoy a rock star romance.

Max is the drummer for Star Shadow, Felix is their PA and Leo’s brother. Felix has been in love with Max for 10 long years but has decided that he must get over his unrequited love. When Max has surgery, Felix decides to help him to recover. Max has always been in love with Felix but never realized it until forced to… This story gave me those dang ugly tears, it was so good. Definitely recommend…..

I'm not sure how I feel about this but I feel as if I'm writing the same review for Felix and Max's story as I did for Benji and Diego's:
- I love friends to lovers trope.
- Both MCs are likeable on many levels: both care openly for each other as friends way before their relationship develops; I like that Max is happy with his lot in his professional life inside and outside of the band; I love Felix's snark, etc.
- They're also extremely frustrating on other levels; both are stubborn at times and I again found myself practically begging both men to tell the other how they feel.
- For me there isn't enough backstory to satisfactorily explain Felix's vulnerabilities.
- For me the book could have been trimmed a little with stricter editing/felt a little long.

What I will say, though, is that I engaged more with Felix and Max's story than either of the other two books in the series. It felt more natural to me in that there are a couple of opportunities where the angst level could've been forced but the author didn't take them.

Overall, Hazardous Things, is a decent slow burn romance with things working out in the end for Felix and Max. There are hints at what the fourth Star Shadow book will be, too. 3.75*

Hazardous Things, the third book in Beth Bolden's Star Shadow series, is a wonderful friends to lovers book.

This is the story of Max and Felix. I am excited to finally get their story and it certainly doesn't disappoint. It's a story of secret crushes and a story of an evolving relationship. Their story is one of confusion and doubts. A mix of forced proximity and slow burn, it's a frustrating journey for these two men to admit their feelings.

I love friends to lovers stories, and this one is certainly wonderful. There are plenty of emotions throughout, as Felix struggles with telling his best friend he loves him and risking his most important relationship.

The author brings out all the emotions in this story of taking chances and laying your heart on the line. The characters are well developed, and their storyline well done.

If you enjoy friends to lovers, be sure to check out Hazardous Things. Beth Bolden's third book in the Star Shadow series is a fun tale of one's crush and best friend not being so straight after all.

I love Felix and Max!

Wow! The chemistry between Felix and Max was off the charts! I love a good GFY and Beth really delivered. It was great getting back to the guys of Starshadow and seeing Felix finally get all the happiness he's deserved. The HEA in this book was hard won but definitely worth it. I can't wait to read the next book and figure out what the heck Caleb and Leo are doing with their lives!

Let me make one thing clear first - I enjoyed the heck out of this book. It's well written with a plot that drew me in and kept me reading. It does feature appearances from the other band members in this rock star romance, so while you could probably read this as a standalone, you'll need to read the first book before book No. 4 comes out because it's back to Leo and Caleb.

If I hadn't been emotionally invested in these characters, I'd have never made it to the third book in the series because these are about the most over-all unlikable people - in my opinion - in any series I've read. I like Max, who seems to honestly be doing his absolute best, and I like Felix most of the time but GOOD GRIEF he needs to get over himself. Such a martyr! That's just my take, mind you, but for more than 3/4 of the book I wanted to reach through the pages and smack these guys around until they paid attention and stopped the insanity.

They did, of course, find their way to a happy ending, and they're really sweet together. It's a testament to Beth Bolden's skill as a writer that I made it through all three of these books with as little sympathy as I had for most of these guys. If you liked the first two books, you'll love this one.

... as long as nothing happens between them, the memory is cursed with what hasn’t happened.” ~ Marguerite Duras, Blue Eyes, Black Hair

For years, Felix Humphries, of ‘Hazardous Things' by Beth Bolden, has lived under the illusion that something will miraculously happen and his straight friend, Max McCloud, and drummer of the band he works for, will suddenly acknowledge his love for him. He decided that being Max’s best friend is better than nothing, but finally, after hoping for years, Felix has decided to give up. His heart won’t take it anymore. Felix has decided to accept that nothing is ever going to happen between them and begins to pull away from Max.

Max is baffled about Felix’s behavior. He doesn’t understand why Felix is avoiding him. He has tried to ask, but Felix refuses to talk about it. It hurts that someone with whom he is “joined by the hip” suddenly decides that he is no longer Max’s friend. Their alienation has the other band members puzzled as well. The band is on break and they are all planning a well-deserved vacation, except for Max. He has decided to get knee surgery that he has been putting off while he has time to recover. Normally Max wouldn’t have been concerned at all because he knows that Felix will be there, but with Felix acting so weird, he assumes that he will be doing it alone. The other members in the band all protest, but Max insists that he has it all figured out and will be okay going it alone. They are skeptical, but decide to take his word for it.

The day of his surgery comes and Max is determined to tough it out, but when he wakes after surgery, he feels far worse, and helpless, than he anticipated. At this point, he realizes how stupid he was to think he could do this by himself. He is preparing to call an Uber when the nurse tells him that his brother is waiting for him. Since Max doesn’t have a brother, he wonders who that is, then falls back asleep. When he wakes up again, Felix is sitting beside his bed. Max is relieved and grateful that his best friend is there to help him through this after all. With some difficulty, they get Max dressed and back to his house. Max is elated when he realizes that Felix intends to stay with him until he can fend for himself.

Felix falls into the position of caregiver naturally since it’s not that much different from what he has done for Max and the others for years as their manager. Although he tried to think he could stay away from this situation, he knew in his heart that he couldn’t. Even if things are not the way Felix wants them to be, his love for Max overrides any resentment Felix feels towards Max’s inability to see it. Max isn’t the easiest of patients, but Felix is relentless in his insistence for Max to follow his post-op directions. Being this near to Max in such an intimate but not romantic situation taxes Felix’s feelings to the limit. At times, he feels like he is going to explode. When he can’t take it any longer, he decides to pleasure himself, which is fine except for when Max walks in on him! Embarrassed doesn’t even begin to express how Felix feels, but even more puzzling is Max’s reaction to the situation. He is turned on which is a shock for both of them!

It took them an annoyingly long time, but Max and Felix finally realize that the love they have had for so long as friends, ultimately made it easier for them to be lovers. Thanks, Beth, for another great addition to the series.

Love the couple, terrific story

Rating: 4🌈

Hazardous Things is the third story in the Star Shadow series and the review I’m having the most problems writing.

One one hand I genuinely love the characters of Felix Humphries and Max McCloud, Star Shadow’s drummer. Felix has been a snarky bundle of intelligent judgment and wry humor from the beginning with the unusual perspective that he’s both known everyone since the band formed as teenagers, he’s the younger brother of one, but also as a non musician has remained on the edge of it all. A sort of edgy, brilliant Greek chorus of one.

Max who’s always been the quiet one of the band, writing but without drama. He’s the been the one who, after Caleb disappeared, Felix became the closest to, as they both watched Leo shatter.

Over the two preceding books, the Max and Felix we started to get to know were great people, and it was hinted at the long time crush Felix has had on the “straight” Max.

Hazardous Things takes Max on a sexual awakening as he becomes aware of his attraction to Felix during an enforced period of physical closeness due to surgery.
It’s a realistic one in which Max doesn’t assign a name to his new sexuality but more realizes that what he’s calling “new” feelings are emotions that have deep roots that he’s never identified before.

The thought processes, the fear, the insecurity… everything that Max goes through feels exceptionally believable.

As does Felix’s reaction and inability to trust Max’s judgement and new sexuality. Especially when trust or the ability to trust is such a huge issue with Felix to begin with.

All that? Yep awesome. Because that’s got obstacles and misunderstandings stamped all over it and I get that. Well done.

What’s less credible in the storyline is Max’s (and others) inability to trust Felix’s judgement. Granted he’s younger than all of them but throughout all the novels, Felix is the one who pulls everything and everyone together. From the tours, band’s accounts, payrolls… everything. It’s Felix. Again and again, they tell each other how brilliant he is etc. They trust him with every aspect of their lives, professionally speaking and even personally.

However, here Max brings up that he doesn’t trust Felix to know what’s best for his own future?

That’s so illogical from the standpoint of a man who was as close as he’s been to Felix. Especially given their past and present history. It seems only like a ploy narratively speaking.

It and some of the other plot “barriers“ feel forced and unnecessary, because there’s enough real issues to work through between them before a satisfying relationship can occur.

While there’s a age gap between them it’s not a issue here. No, a matter of Max’s previous sexuality or perceived sexual identity. And Felix overcoming his fears.

That the heart and center here. And I wish some of the “extra drama” had been trimmed away to focus on that.

Still Felix and Max are a terrific couple, they have enormous chemistry, and I enjoyed their story.

And I’m recommending it. Read all the stories in the order they were written. Now onto book 4.

I enjoyed reading this book, I'm a huge fan of MM, and really like the straight to gay stories. I loved Max, this man has a kind, soft heart. He loves his friends and band mates, would do anything for them, especially Felix. Felix is in love with Max, has been for years, but knows that Max is straight. These two have been best friends, always there for the other, so when Felix pulls away Max is confused. This is where communication is definitely needed, and horribly lacking. When Max has surgery Felix shows up to help him. Felix is really smart, mature, and a genius at organizing and managing the band as their PA. With that knowledge of him, I guess I just expected more out of him. After Max catches Felix getting off while saying his name, he starts to realize that he's curious what it would be like being with Felix. Max doesn't have a clue what he's doing, so he's fumbling his way through trying to explain his interest of exploring with Felix. Here again is where truth, honesty, and better communication is needed. At times, the urge to knock these two's heads together is very strong. Anyway, Felix ends up agreeing to fool around with Max, but still never comes out with his true feelings. This dude made my head hurt. His mood swings, defensive behavior, and inability to be honest isn't fitting with the picture I feel was painted of this character. Max isn't perfect, but he puts in so much more effort, and puts himself out there much more than Felix. The struggles these guys go through could have been far less if only they sat down and honestly talked to one another. This is a problem so many of real life couples struggle with as well. Putting yourself and your truth out there for others to see, judge, ridicule, reject, or even condemn you for is scary. So I loved when these guys were finally able to lay themselves bare for each other. They finally understood that in order to be happy, to open themselves up for a chance to love and be committed, they had to stop lying, stop running, and just put everything out in the open. After all is said and done, Max and Felix are a stronger, healthier couple, who you find yourself loving very much. I gave this book 4 stars instead of 5 because I really did find myself disliking Felix a lot throughout the book. I felt like we were supposed to like both characters, or relate or sympathize with them, but I found it difficult with Felix. Again, I am very happy for his and Max's relationship at the end, so I really did enjoy reading this. Oh, and let's not forget to mention that the scenes when these two would get together were 🔥🔥🔥!! So look forward to those. 😉 You're welcome!

Just to reiterate one point from the synopsis—you will want to make sure you’ve at least read the first book in this series before starting Hazardous Things otherwise you might find yourself a bit lost with who all of the characters are and the backstory that has brought them all to this point. While this book is primarily focused on Max and Felix, there will be some things that come up with Leo and Caleb that won’t be as meaningful (and worrisome) if you don’t know their story as well.

Felix is absolutely a caretaker type, so when you combine that with the unrequited feelings he has had for Max for years it provides an obvious setup to launch their story. Max…he’s definitely oblivious to those feelings Felix has been harboring, at least until one particular incident triggers the start of something physical between them.

Things progress much as you would expect, and though they agree they need to communicate with their arrangement the true communication—you know, about those pesky feelings— that they both sorely need is frustratingly absent. Add in the requisite minor misunderstanding (that to me felt more like just a convenient excuse, something that Felix could deliberately take advantage of to try and protect himself)…and you have a moderately angsty rockstar romance.

Felix and Max do belong together, that’s obvious to everyone—me included, I just get irritated when characters aren’t communicating they way they should. Since the whole communication breakdown and angst level are really a me-thing, my 4-star rating is based primarily on the writing and love of the individual characters. Fans of the series and anyone who likes rockstar romances will absolutely enjoy this third entry in the Star Shadow series. Keep in mind that with the adult language and sexual content, this book is meant for readers 18+.

This is the third book in this series and a very enjoyable friends to lovers story! This book is about Felix and Max and a continuation in the Star Shadow series. Max is the drummer for Star Shadow and Felix is the band’s PA and also Leo’s brother. Felix has been in love with Max for pretty much forever, but he’s also his best friend and straight so it’s nothing Felix has ever acted on. When Max has knee surgery and needs someone to help him, Felix, of course steps in to help and things between the two really start to change.

I really liked Max and Felix, they are both great characters and I thought they were great together. It’s very clear how much Max means to Felix, right from the start you can feel how much he cares. When Max realizes he is attracted to Felix, I appreciated that Felix took some time to consider that and what it would mean for him. Of course, the two do hook up and although it’s supposed to be just sex, the feelings sure do start. Lines definitely get blurred and soon these two have to face their issues.

One of the big challenges these two face is communication, they both need to learn to be honest with themselves and each other! They made me a little crazy at times and broke my heart a bit, but I really did love the way their story came together. It was definitely worth it to see Max understand his feelings for Felix! Felix and Max are definitely meant to be!

This is a best friends to lover and unrequited love story, and I love those tropes dearly. I like the balance of an already existing friendship that builds into a more intimate relationship. It makes one appreciate the slow burn and the "I love him more than friend" moment gives me that warm butterfly feeling in my stomach.

Felix has been crushing on his older brother's best friend, Max, for some quite some time. Just when Felix lost hope in Max every being able to return Felix's feelings, a shift in their friendship occurs when he volunteers to be there for Max during his surgery and recovery. It is during Max's recovery, where Max himself, learns to fully acknowledge his own feelings and the two begin seeing each other in a different light. There are some mistakes that both make along the way, but like any new couple they learn to communicate.

This is the third book in a series, and I would not recommend reading this as a stand alone. I had to go back and read the first two books to refresh my memory before I could read this one because a lot of previous characters are mentioned and the dynamic needs to be understand to fully grasp the Felix and Max's story.

“Hazardous Things” by Beth Bolden is the third book in the ‘Star Shadow’ series and centers around Felix Humphries and the drummer for his brother’s band, Max McCloud. Felix decides to support Max during the band’s hiatus, and maybe he’ll find a way to cope with the hopeless situation he’s struggled against for years.

This adult contemporary gay romance follows another of the complicated relationship that plagues the band. The painful history that ties all of these men together makes it even more difficult for Felix to pursue what he sees as a fruitless quest to step out from his standard role and follow his heart, especially with a guy who has always pursued straight relationships. I love that, even conflicted as they are, they still are there for each other when it’s needed.

All of the guys in this series are charismatic, and their bonds to each other are strong and inspiring…even when their communication skills aren’t the best. As with the other books in this series, there are plenty of angsty conflicts and hurt feelings from misinterpretations and intense scenes. I enjoyed this addition to the collection of stories about the guys in Star Shadow, and I look forward to reading the sequel.

Max and Felix! Felix and Max!

My anticipation for their story was off the charts! Max has the laid back vibe and Felix is the confident, sassy, go-getter. They were bound to make a great pair.

And they do; however, I felt the coupling was anti-climatic. For me, I wanted more awkwardness, more angst, to go along with the incident that leads to Max and Felix discussing hooking up. It felt more like "yeah, whatever" rather than "oh wow, what do I do". I expected more uncertainty, more back and forth.

Also, the introduction of the animosity between Felix and Camden felt forced/contrived only for the purpose of inserting a conflict. I just didn't get it.

The "I love you"s also felt uneventful. more matter-of-fact than HOLY REVELATION, BATMAN!

I did enjoy reading Hazardous Things. I adore the guys of Star Shadow, and this installment is no exception. I think I just had different expectations going in. I'll give it some time and pick it back up to start again. A reread might change my mind.

I’ve been waiting for this book because it combines two of my favorite tropes, GFY/Bi/Gay Awakening and Friends to Lovers. It did NOT disappoint. Thank you, Beth Bolden. Leo being supportive took out the forbidden best friend and little brother aspect, though. Leo is such a party pooper!

I sat down ‪at about 5 p.m.‬, and started the book. I read it straight through ‪until 1:20 a.m.‬ I couldn’t put it down. Max and Felix‘s story was just too delicious.

This was book three in the series. It continues the story from book two, only it shifts the main characters to Max and Felix. This can’t really be appreciated as a standalone, and Terrible Things and Impossible Things should be read first.

I stand by my previous reviews, and I’m still obsessed with this series. It’s so, very good. The writing has drawn me in and made me fall in love with these six beautiful men. I will be nursing a broken heart once the series is deemed complete. I will be revisiting them repeatedly in the future. One read-through is hardly enough. I need more!

🎼Why can't they be frank: Felix with Max and Max with himself?!

If you like your MM romance angstful with steam and tons of feelings bottled up and left unsaid, this rock band romance should hit the mark. Felix has known for ages that he is in love with his brother's fellow band member (and so does almost everyone but Max, the object of his affection). Max is pretty clueless and, when his operation and recuperation has Felix living in his pocket to watch over his recovery, the stage is set for churning emotions to boil over.

For me, the constant introspection and inability for these guys to open up to each other got me frustrated and I felt the story lagged in the middle. I was not won over by either or Felix. But the writing is fine and the ending is happy so all's well that ends well? Though part of a series about the guys in the band, this book can be read as a standalone. The other guys in the band appear, but the plot is solidly built around Felix and Max.

I read a complimentary advance copy of the book; this is my voluntary and honest review.

Felix works as a PA for his older brother’s very famous band Star Shadow. He’s a very clever and capable man and he’s best friends with the drummer of the band, Max. He’s also been in love with Max for years. But Max is straight and Felix decides to put some distance between them and try to get over him. When Max has knee surgery and needs someone to help him recover Felix is the only one that can do it. So they get stuck together in a house and things between them start changing. Maybe Max isn’t straight after all.
Felix was one of my favorite side characters from the first book. I loved his witty comments. I was really excited for his story and it was all I was hoping for! The chemistry between him and Max was explosive. Forced proximity is one of the most entertaining tropes. The book was beautifully written and I really enjoyed reading it. It was fun, steamy and had some very moving moments. I’m anxiously waiting for the last book and to find out what is going on with Leo and Caleb

This is another great addition to the Star Shadow series and I am so happy to read Felix's story as he has intrigued me from the beginning. Hazardous Things is well written, engaging, emotional, sweet, angsty, fun and the characters are amazing. I love Max and Felix together as they have a strong connection and great chemistry. Their lack of communication and fear of rejection has both of them floundering as neither of them is sure of the others feelings. Max is the only person who is unaware of how much Felix has pined for him for years and being forced to live together as Max recovers from surgery has him re-evaluating their long friendship. It did take me a while to get into this story as it is a bit slow in the beginning but once the pace picked up I really enjoyed it. I love the secondary characters, the ending is good and I can't wait to read the next book in this series.

I voluntarily reviewed an advanced copy of this book.

Max, drummer for Star Shadow has always been in love with his best friend Felix even though he doesn’t quiet see it. When he has knee surgery and Felix comes to stay to look after him he finally starts to see that he loves him more than a best friend.

There was no chance that Felix was gonna let Max recover from knee surgery on his own. He’s secretly loved Max for 10 years but as Max is Leo’s (Felix’s brother) best friend, his boss and most importantly straight he’s had to bury his feelings. When he starts getting vibes from Max he pulls away, this can’t happen. Felix won’t let a stupid mistake ruin their friendship until an emergency pulls them back together and Felix finds out that Max isn’t quite as straight as he thought!

Hazardous Things is a slower paced story than the previous books and at times I wanted to bang their heads together but still enjoyable and well written. I’m excited for the last in the series where we revisit Leo & Calebs love story.
