I am a journalist specializing in international affairs and I speak and write three languages, English, French and Spanish, two of which I love and I learned pleasantly but with difficulty and one because I had to, only with difficulty. Maria Spantidi's book was a real revelation for me. I never imagined that a mechanical engineer, that is, a "non-specialist" with languages, could have such a deep understanding of the mental and practical process of learning a language. But Maria Spantidi managed, because she is a positive scientist, to encode her rich personal experiences in the simplest, clearest and most vivid way. That's why her book mobilizes the reader's will, emotions and mind and leads him step by step to express himself in the language he loves. Learning a language will not cost you anything if you rely on the book. You will discover, among other things, a treasure of Internet resources that you would be bored to search for yourself, you will find ways to combine methods to achieve the goal you have set, you will also learn not only how to achieve but also how to choose your goal, depending on your personal needs. You will learn a lot of precious "tricks", such as this with the fake phone call that caused the Spaniard at the airport to start a discussion and make practice! “Fluent for Free” overturns established language learning methods - first theory, grammar, syntax, etc. and puts you in a whole new world, alive, real, full of music and images - learning a new language in ways proposed by Maria Spantidi will fill you with joy. Even if you haven't thought about learning a new language, Maria's book is so enjoyable that it can convince you to open a new window to the world! Bravo Maria, I would like to meet you!
This inspiring book has all the information you need if you want to learn a language on your own. It includes all tips and tricks I have ever heard for language learning and more. Unlike a lot of similar books, it not only explains the rules for language learning and presents the methods used but it also encourages you to keep working and helps you go over the problems that occur during the process of language learning. I believe that in those 220 pages even the ones who ‘have tried everything’ and 'are not good at languages' will find their way into learning their desired language (and many more). The book is also very well structured and easy to read. It was an interesting journey reading this book.
As someone who can communicate in 5 languages and has been learning a bit of other languages, I would highly recommend this book. Even though it offers most tips I already know, I think it’s a great book for people who have never learned foreign languages and think they don’t have what it takes to learn one. The book is also written in a very friendly and conversational tone that made me, a foreign language learning veteran, feel motivated to resume learning some languages that I’ve been learning on and off for years.
Fluent for free is a great book for those who want to learn a new language for free or almost for free. There are many resources and many ways to learn a new language thanks to the internet. If you have internet and enough motivation to learn a language this book will orientate you in every aspect of the learning process. I totally recommend it!
What a fun and well-done book on language learning! Have you ever wanted to learn a foreign language, perhaps even become fluent, whether for business or pleasure? In this book, the author shares the way that she has learned foreign languages best—and it's all for free, as suggested by the title.
She starts by telling you her language story in the introduction. Like most of us, she first studied foreign languages in school but struggled with them—and remembered little of the language later. At various points in her life, she has wanted or needed to learn another language, like when she moved to Germany from Greece. So she developed a learning plan using a lot of resources on the internet, and we benefit from her work in pulling this all together.
Next comes a myth-busting section. You are never too old to learn a language, and you shouldn’t be embarrassed to try out your language skills with native speakers. The bulk of the book is about gathering free resources for you to use as you learn your chosen language, mostly from the internet. She uses a variety of websites, apps, forums, and the like. She has actually discovered a pretty inventive set of resources. Certainly, the internet makes learning foreign languages so much more fun. Then she takes a deeper dive, looking at the four fundamental things that you need to work on to become fluent in another language: reading, listening, writing, and speaking. She wraps up the book by helping you develop a plan that will work for you to learn the language of your choice.
I've had an interest in learning foreign languages since I was a teenager; I absolutely adored learning French in high school and college (though it is a bit rusty), but I've always wanted to learn more. This book may be just the ticket to do that. If you have an interest in language learning, this book could help you get there using the internet resources available—and for free.
I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.
I really enjoyed this book. It was so easy to read, and very inspiring, enlightening and helpful. Maria writes like you're talking to a dear friend who is giving advice on how they successfully learned a language. The book gives a lot of resources and tips, and helps frame your mindset on what it takes to learn a language. She also sheds some light on common misconceptions and doubts that run through a learner's head. Beyond this though, the message that the book tackles could be applied to learning and failure in general. I feel it is worth reading, even if you're not learning a new language.
I feel that the one thing the book could improve on is making the points a bit more concise. The book tackles a lot of mini topics, and it becomes quite overwhelming to read. Regardless, still 5 stars from me.
This book is a comprehensive guide to living a language. It is stuffed FULL of so many resources and techniques to suit any learning style. Spantidi’s framing through discussions of mindset make the book particularly special; she devotes a whole section to addressing our own self-sabotage, from self-doubt, to feeling stuck at a plateau or simply being bored by the process and more. She describes times when she’s been plagued by each of these obstacles, making her advice practical and human.
I have been learning Spanish on my own for some time now. This book was something like an enlightenment for me. It contains lots of valuable ideas and concrete information on how to learn a new language without a teacher. It certainly boosted my motivation to continue learning! Great stuff, highly recommended.
A great guide for language learners either starters or as a complement and motivation to those who are already learning. Though I found some redundancy on those final chapters which can be corrected on next editions, this book is definitely worth 5 stars for the anecdotes, approaches and resources compiled on it!
This book is full of techniques and methods that DO work when put into practice, I knew some of them myself but I learned many new ones that I look forward to using in my language learning journey. After reading this book I researched a bit about the author and I must say that she is inspirational for aspiring polyglots like me. Good job Maria!
I love to learn new languages but not easy or practical when you are busy. This book shows how to learn and have fun in a practical less stressful way with a little sense if humour. Great book
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Great advice and resources. Language learning does not need to be expensive or boring and the author has many great approaches to this. I highly recommend this to any language learner.
It is a good inspiration and motivation book with different methods on how to learn a new language free. It's a good book if you are thinking of learning a new language. I am definitely learning Hebrew and Greak. How can I forget Venda, surely I will learn it.
Really motivational! She covers unique and fun ways to learn languages along with how to overcome failures and self doubt. It was a good and quick read!
