My Fake Boyfriend

Rate this book
Faking romance is easy to do – but keeping my heart safe is a totally different matter.

Mia
All my life I’ve dreamed of becoming a famous journalist. Joining the school's newspaper is the first step toward that goal, but there's one catch—the only open spot is the relationship advice column. And without a boyfriend, I don’t qualify.

Until I catch Sweet Mountain’s bad boy, Jimmy Alston, burning down the school shed.

I could expose his criminal activities, or I could blackmail him into a fake relationship for the newspaper. Problem solved – that is, until Jimmy and his fake romance skills start to feel all too real.

Jimmy
Burning down that shed was an accident, but there’s no way I’ll get to keep my baseball scholarship if anyone finds out. It was my mom’s last wish to see me get out of this town and make something of myself. Nothing stands in my way—

Except for the beautiful and sharp-tongued Mia Jackson.

Now she’s got us faking a relationship together and fooling everyone at school. But maybe the biggest fool of them all is me, because I seem to keep forgetting that every touch, every look, and every kiss is fake. Together, we’re like fire and gasoline…and the school’s garden shed might not be the only thing heating up this year.

Dive into My Fake Boyfriend, the third installment of the BRAND NEW multi-author series, Sweet Mountain High.

This is a YA romance, it´s cute, sometimes funny and a bit cliché, but that´s exactly what I needed and expected.

I didn´t connect to the characters that much and it felt forced at times.

Gasoline and Fire

I hope I never grow to old to enjoy a cute young adult story. This one is sweet and sassy and I couldn't get enough.

Mia is an aspiring journalist and when she stumbles upon a juicy story involving the school's bad boy, Jimmy, she just knows she's struck gold. But who knew it would be in the form of a blackmail quid pro quo type of deal. As these enemies learn to scratch each other's backs to get what they want, they realize their wants might not quite be accurate.

I adored these characters in so many ways. First of all, things aren't always as they seem, as they each come to realize. Secondly, sometimes truly getting to know a person can form unanticipated connections. Third, love knows no rhyme or reason and the sparks that ignited from this enemy-to-love story were threatening to spontaneously combust my kindle.

I was ready to pack my bags and move into this story and enjoyed every single page. If you love sweet YA romance, you won't want to miss this one!

Content: mild violence/danger; mild romance (kissing, light innuendo)

What a delightful book! I had so much fun reading this one. I thought I'd just skim through it but nope, I found myself enjoying every word. Mia appeared in the previous book and I kept hoping that there might be a story for her. I was excited to read her book. She's sharp witted and not afraid to be daring if it means she can follow her dreams. One problem...she needs a boyfriend. Luckily she has a pretty easy solution. Blackmail Jimmy to be her boyfriend and she'll keep his secret.

Fake relationship stories are a favorite trope of mine. I find them humorous and sometimes I find myself anxiously anticipating the moment when it all falls apart. The reason for me anticipating the falling apart is because these two characters fix the lies they've been perpetuating and come to recognize the truth that they really do care for each other. That they want to do what's best for the other and they can't hide that truth anymore.

Mia and Jimmy dance around their feelings for each other for a little while and it made for some pretty cute scenes and funny moments. I really enjoyed when everything fell apart and watching these two teenagers stepping forward to fix it and admit fault. I loved seeing them realize that the consequences and the truth were better than the guilt and the lies. Not necessarily always easier but better and more freeing.

I thought they were a very cute couple, especially when they were coming to recognize the other person more and truly seeing them. Cute, cute, cute!

Another fun book in this series for YA lovers. And another one my teens will enjoy as well!

Content: Clean. There is mention of parties and teenage drinking. I don't agree with teen drinking and don't want to promote that but thought that the author wrote it in a non detailed way.

I received a copy from the publisher. All thoughts and opinions in the review are my own.

Happy Reading!!!

This is a YA romance book written from the point of view of two American high-school kids in alternating chapters, I couldn’t be bothered to look up what the names for the school years translate to, but they are obviously teenagers, and I think that the boy (Jimmy) is a year or two older than the girl (Mia). Mia wants to be a reporter and is obsessed with getting a job on the “School Newspaper” (do they even have those any more?). The book aims for a kind of sweet timelessness, but slips slightly uncomfortably between what seems to be a physical paper and a blog, without ever committing to one or the other. The author manages to create a feeling of an archetypal high school environment with minimal detail but without too many broad-brush stereotypes. The exception is the introduction of the generic “mean girls” and their head, who (for purposes mainly due to the need for an antagonist in the formula) is also obsessed with the school paper and actively seeks to prevent Mia from getting involved. Add to this a kindly mentor for each of the characters (a mumsy teacher for Mia and his Pastor father of no particular denomination for Jimmy) and both parties caught up in lies that you know will be revealed to clear the air at the end and you have all the beats of a Save-The-Cat plot.

There are one or two slight trip-ups, for example, I was caught out and had to re-read an emotionally critical scene near the end, breaking me out of the moment, because the author had buried a key bit of description. Jimmy is making his big move to reconcile with Mia and brings with him two cups of his father’s special milkshake (!). I missed the bit where he got them out of his car, and only noticed their presence when I read

“But when my eyes opened again, he’d moved closer, his expression changing to something much more solemn. He glanced down at the cups in his hands, hurt passing over his face”

For a moment, I thought this sweet YA romance had turned raunchy, but couldn’t believe it so I had to go hunting back for the introduction of these “cups”. The first time I didn’t find them, and had to wait until they were explained. This is really quite a minor issue compared to some of the largely unedited stuff that I read, though.

The writing is certainly competent, and the reader is pulled along with the characters and the inevitable rollercoaster of their romance. There is no doubt from the start as to how it will end, but the fun is in travelling with them to get there. The book was such a quick, smooth read that it seemed shorter than it’s 45000 words. Sure, it has a thousand or so of preview and “also by”, but the fact that I read it so quickly and easily is a good sign.

ESP ::

ENG ::

I really liked this book! Fake relationship is a well known dilemma when in a book, but the way it develops in this story is original and funny.

The main characters are Mia and Jimmy. She’s a junior, he’s a senior and they engage in the dynamic because both of them will get something they consider important out of it.

Jimmy has a really cool relationship with his dad (which I loved) and I enjoy how Mia is aware of this and shares it with Jimmy every chance she gets.

Their interaction is cute, sweet and entertaining. A short story guaranteed to make the readers smile.

5/5 feel-good stars

Definitely one of my favorites in the Sweet Mountain High series: All the butterflies, all the swoons, plenty of teenage idiocy, lots of growing up and owning of mistakes, plus a satisfying happy end (at least an excellent HFN) - despite some tough issues Mia, Jimmy, and their families are dealing with.

Teens and hormones

I don’t know why I keep reading these. They are totally like junk food. Fun but not good for us. Still, I think that some junk food books are exactly what we need.

High school shenanigans

Stealthy photos of a prank gone bad, blackmail, and mean girls broker a fake boyfriend. This was funny and sweet. Lacy has a gift for making her characters so real they could have stepped out of your past.

I really enjoyed the first half of this book but the second half I couldn't get into it all. It was way too predictable so easily wrapped up it ruin the book for me.
