This is a fabulous finale to June Heal’s series, A Magical Cure. Honestly, it is the first I’ve read in the series, even though several more of the series are in my Kindle TBR. I will enjoy going back and reading the earlier ones to see June’s life in Whispering Falls, Kentucky. The characters are engaging. There is a healthy dose of laughter amidst the magical cures. The mystery kept me guessing throughout, and whodunit wasn’t even someone on my radar!
June and Oscar are happily married, living in the little house where June had once lived with her parents. They are eagerly anticipating the birth of Little One, as nicknamed until the babe is born, as they chose to not learn the babe’s sex until born. Close friends are planning the baby shower, and Oscar and police department partner Colton are building an addition to the cottage.
June has been preparing as many of her magical cures ahead of time as possible so she can have time at home with Little One after the birth. Her shop has a huge following with locals and tourists, and her products are sold at a national chain and a nearby grocery store.
If this is your first visit to Whispering Falls, you’ll find that every shop here is a little bit different. As is the entire, delightful town! There is an overall sense of well-being brought about simply by being there. The people are friendly and helpful, and the shops are welcoming. You see, most of the residents have certain magical gifts enabling them to do special things to help others. Only those with the special gifts can own shops. There is a heavy tourist trade, and tourists are always eager to return.
June misses her late mom, Darla, more than ever, and only has her journal of when she was pregnant with June to wrap around her heart. She is going to the same doctor who delivered her in a nearby town. One day when she was there for a checkup, she noticed that Little One has almost stopped moving, which is very unusual. The doctor wants her to return the next morning for a special ultrasound. When she returns, there are several sheriff’s department cars around the building. Martha, the nurse, is outside, and told June why. When the early morning cleaning crew took out the garbage, the receptionist was found dead in the dumpster. When the sheriff’s team goes through the girl’s motel room or car, they will find documents that the receptionist had been holding over the doctor’s practice and blackmailing him. Who will be there to deliver Little One when the time comes? June and Oscar definitely want this mystery resolved fast. As the Chosen One, June is responsible to protect Whispering Falls and its inhabitants. That includes her doctor, who she has just learned is “one of us”, and expediently, before Little One is born.
This mystery kept me on my toes! The person I thought most likely to be the killer was not, and I was completely surprised at the who, and the why! While there are more and different paranormal elements than I usually prefer, I do enjoy the well-defined, delightful characters and appreciated that the author seamlessly wove in enough background to make it an excellent standalone. It is fun, endearing, and keeps one guessing throughout! I highly recommend this to fans of the author, those who enjoy well-written paranormal and Southern cozy mysteries, and wonderful characters.
