This stunning graphic novel details cartoonist Rick Smith's travels with his wife Tania throughout Morocco, from Tangiers through the Sahara Desert and on the Marrakech and Casablanca. From hassles with transportation and the locals to language barriers and drugged carpet sales, this travelogue is a whirlwind through pre-9/11 Morocco.
The title let you have different expectation of the book!! but there isn't a story about black magic or baraka ! So the title is a lie , just to catch attention, and I didn't like that!
Simple line quality for the drawings in this book. A little whirlwindish of a travelogue, but still interesting for anyone who's thinking about going to Morocco...and don't let this (and almost every travelogue I've read on the place) scare you off; aggressive panhandling, aggressive selling of everything and the kitchen sink (but especially rugs), changing dialects/languages, being unable to 'read' people and the intentions or even simply being unable to tell how to act in various social settings...Yes. These things do happen, but it IS worth going. Trust me, Montana don't got nothing on Big Sky Country -- Africa does.
I wish I could read a Moroccan travel story that was a little more uplifting...
