This is difficult to rate. I quite liked both MCs & the relationship dynamic between them; I also liked how so much of their time is spent in the confines of Brandt’s cell, which transitions from isolated & claustrophobic on his part to a safe, secure haven for them to be together. Their sexual tension was good, & there was no boring virgin trope because Katla was already a widow, albeit one whose husband treated her like crap; in any case, she’s well aware that widowhood has left her free to take discreet lovers, but has chosen not to act on that freedom until Brandt. Likewise, I appreciated that Brandt mourned his dead wife but didn’t angst & moan about how there was no room for new love in his heart. The parallels & juxtapositions of their past romantic histories were handled well, imo.

But…

Ultimately this book suffers from being tacked onto 4 previous installments of an overly-drawn-out series. Much of Brandt & Katla’s tale is interrupted by mulling over pieces of the brothers’ quest, yet the “huge conspiracy” isn’t all that huge. So a jealous woman uses her connections & her body to instigate several murders & install her weakling son on the throne of a region she wanted for herself?? 😱 It really shouldn’t have taken 5 brothers’ novels to unravel their tiny pieces of this puzzle. It also forced these characters to act & behave in ways that seemed counter to what the author wanted from them—e.g., Katla’s father beating her, then suddenly regretting it & reversing his thinking, but she never confronts him about any of it, nor is it even clear whether she’s his real daughter or not. First she is, then she isn’t, but then he throws it in the villainess’ face that she can’t manipulate him against his own blood anymore? So did Katla’s aunt lie about the mother’s infidelity? And how can Katla not confront her father about beating her if he was suddenly so conflicted?!

If my description sounds murky & confusing, it’s because the background story never really meshed with the current plot. There were other things that felt similarly rushed or whip-switch or unanswered, & my overall impression was that Brisbin struggled to keep her characters on point with the Sigurd series vs the story she wanted to tell.

3.5 stars for these MCs & their scenes together, but rounded down; the overall Sons of Sigurd backdrop just didn’t work for yours truly, & despite its positives this book relies too heavily on a series concept. Sad. :/

3.5 stars, rounded up - Might be a bit spoilerish

After years of running; hiding and being branded an outlaw, Brandt Sigurdsson, the eldest son and his father’s heir, believes he will finally have justice for the murder of not only his father Sigurd, King of Maerr, but also his beloved wife and unborn son, along with countless others. In the years since that fatal night the brothers have searched for answers, from their home in Norway to England, Ireland and Scotland. All the information they have each gathered have led Brandt to Castle Wik in Alba (Scotland) to confront his father’s friend and his Aunt’s husband – Thornfinn Bjornsson. Brandt challenges Thornfinn and is gravely wounded and taken prisoner – surprised that his life spared by Thornfinn.

Thornfinn sends his widowed daughter, Katla to tend Brandt, telling her he wants him alive to be taken to King Harald once the winter passes. His injuries are serious and due to a beating she endured for disobeying her father – Brandt was left untended for days. She is not sure she can save him, but refuses to give up without a fight and even in her own injured state, she works diligently to save him. After days of care and many prayers offered to the gods – Brandt shows signs of surviving. He slowly heals and comes to respect the quiet, caring woman who tends him. Katla and Brandt form a friendship and when her father announces she will be remarried to her step-mother’s commander, she asks Brandt to help her escape, he agrees but plans to return to enact his vengeance on her father – but when he realizes his quest may cost him a second chance at happiness, will he give up his desire for justice?

This was a very well written, smoothly paced novel that neatly ends the series. Set in ancient Scotland, the book is filled with emotion, warm love scenes, action, betrayal, surprising revelations, twists and turns that lead to more revelations, closure for Brandt and his brothers and HEAs for all. I really felt Brandt pain, but the ongoing reminders of his deep love for his dead wife Ingrid – including a detailed dream of making love to her and memories of her during love scenes with Katla was a bit off-putting in a romance. I am not a huge fan of second romances, I did feel that he loved both women dearly and in the end was able to devote himself to Katla – but I wish it was done with less detail of his love life with Ingrid. This is the fifth and final book in the series, but it could easily be read as a standalone title with no issues. I enjoyed this story and would happily recommend.

*I am voluntarily leaving a review for an eARC that I requested from NetGalley and the Publisher. All opinions are my own.*

The prompt Tales of Old made me think of medieval right off the bat. I hit my TBR piles eagerly – and ended up DNF-ing a few medievals, so after that experience, I just wanted an author whose books normally work for me. Terri Brisbin’s books usually hit the spot, and while not my favorite by her, Tempted by Her Viking Enemy actually did come close. Even though it’s the last book in the Sons of Sigurd series, it works quite well as a standalone. I had issues with some of the revelations in the suspense plot, but that doesn’t mean I wasn’t entertained at times.

Set in ninth century Scotland, this story focuses mostly on the goings on in the household of Thorfinn, a Norseman whose late first wife was one of the local Scottish women. The author sets the stage quickly, and it’s apparent that all is not well in Thorfinn’s household. For reasons that remain unclear, he has remarried Kolga, a Viking widow who apparently has a fair amount of land and power in her own right. The marriage is clearly a cause for tension between Thorfinn and his adult daughter, Katla.

As the story opens, a man mysteriously shows up and issues a challenge. Following a fierce fight, the injured prisoner is placed in the dungeon but Thorfinn mystifies his men by insisting the captive be kept alive to face justice before the king. It is revealed that Thorfinn owes this man his life, but he keeps the details to himself.

Thorfinn sends his widowed daughter Katla to tend to the prisoner, and there she learns that Brandt is himself the son of a Viking leader, Sigurd. Brandt and his brothers were cast off as outlaws after their father was declared a traitor and the brothers have been working to unravel the plot that led to false charges against their father and a massacre at the wedding of one of the brothers.

The setting in this book is almost claustrophobic since most of it takes place in the dungeon where Brandt is kept. However, that works fairly well given the storyline, because both of the leads spend a great deal of the story working through issues internally. The setting provides the space needed to advance the emotional side of the story, and there’s just enough external action to keep the suspense plot moving.

𝗠𝘆 𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄

Will his pursuit for retribution put him of the path of his death or a different future ...

I have only read the second book in this series, and I remember the opening scene, a devastating one.
Here it is more subtle, even painful, instead of the gruesome details of the battle, it is the weight of the sadness left by the lives lost in the wake of the fight.
And what began as a story of revenge turned in a healing tale.
Brandt is driven by his need for retribution, to avenge the murder of his wife and unborn son, the soiling of his family’s name and the theft of his rightful lands. And now after years of inquiries, he knows who was behind the attack.
And while he should have suspected devious play, he enters the den of the wolf weapons in hands ready to die to clean his honor.
And death he will graze, walk at its doorstep until a wounded Angel steps in to heal his broken body and his lost soul.
Katla lives on borrowed time, threatened from all part, she survives finding her way in the shadows. And her new task to help her father’s prisoner to hold on his life is not an easy one when everyone made sure he was more dead than alive.
Them both have a long way toward the other, while the wound of the flesh are closing, those of the soul keep festering. Their time together give them food for the spirit, they get to know one another, really know.

The author offers us a great last in a series, tying all the loose threads together and giving a second to her doomed couple.

I'm a huge fan of Terri Brisbin. I own alot of her books and I honestly wanted to be able to give this a 5 star rating I really did. However with the disaster that was book 3 of this series, book 4 and now book 5 went along way to cleaning up the mess left behind but just didn't quite get there for me.

Through out the series Brandt is spoken of as broken and a former shell of himself since Ingrids death yet he is able to forget about it quick enough when he meets Katla. While I loved the characters this just made it feel a bit hollow. His brothers were alot more resistant to the idea of allowing them selves to fall in love then Brandt who had not only lost his beloved wife but his unborn son as well. The book started out relatively well but didn't progress from there. There was alot of wash, rinse, repeat and not alot of story progression.
Also there was no real satisfaction of kolgas downfall it all just fell flat. The woman that seemed to cause so much death and distruction gets 2 whole pages..... just about. The fight scenes were glossed over. If there was less time focused on Brandt and Katla in the prison cell and more on the escape and reveal it might have changed the pace a bit.

This Viking romance had so many things that I love in a story going on with it. It's enemies to lovers, political intrigue, and the nursing him back to health trope!
*TW for grief, loss of a spouse, loss of a child, domestic abuse.*
The dynamics between our characters are layered, and they both come into their situation with their fair share of baggage. I love what the author did to bring them together in the end, and the way that the family connections played into everything.

Though, this was the first book of the Sons of Sigurd I read, in no way did I feel lost for the action which preceded in the first four books. Brisbin gave the details I needed in order to understand the gravity of the information discussed.

The romance between Brandt and Katla was believable and took its time to develop. I was able to revel in the sparks ignited between enemy family members. They each realized their love and sacrificed it for the other.

I'm very "tempted" to read the other books in the Sons of Sigurd series. And definitely will keep Terri Brisbin in mind as an author to read in the future!

A quick read but definitely good!
Brandt is on a mission to reclaim his father's honor and to dish out revenge to those responsible for killing his father, his wife, and his son. He wants revenge, his honor/his father's honor back and he wants the lands of his father back. So, he travels to the castle of who he firmly believes is responsible only to fail on the challenge and end up in the cells. With a promise to turn him over to the king and will probably end up escuted.
Katla is loyal to her father, she escaped from a bad marriage the first time and when she is betrothed to a monster knowing she will end up dying she knows she must escape and the only person who will be able to help her escape is Brandt. Brandt and Katla slowly fall in love and then form a plan for their escape. Will Brandt be able to let go of his revenge and restore the honor and stay with Katia. Only time will tell. This is a romance novel but there are much more even sword fights and schemes. I really enjoyed it! Definitely will look into others by this author and in this series!

Read and find out in the conclusion in Tempted by Her Viking Enemy by Terri Brisbin

I have been reading Terri Brisbin books for over twenty years and believe me her books will always keep you on your toes and sweep you away! This book is no different as the “Sons of Sigurd” series is a wonderful five book series. Each book by a different author which I found myself falling in love with each brother. Yet Brandt is the brother that shattered my heart the most! I was not sure he would ever heal and come back completely after such a big loss. I found this story so beautifully written feeling the emotions each character felt. As the setting, dialogue , the pace of the storyline and the plotting was absolutely brilliant in my opinion. The multidimensional characters and even the secondary characters just blew me away!

Historical readers will love this riveting action packed, page turner, filled with vengeance, betrayal, treachery, deception, murder, grief, fury, forgiveness, trust, faith, passion and love. It also shows how family is everything and a connection between brothers can’t be broken. Yet sometimes an honorable Viking might find that rare compassionate woman with a warriors heart that might possibly bring the light back into their life of darkness!

Disclaimer: I received an advance reader’s copy from Harlequin Publishing. I voluntarily agreed to do an honest, fair review and blog through netgalley. All thoughts, ideas and words are my own.

I absolutely and unequivocally highly recommend this masterpiece! One of my favorite reads of the year!

3 star read

Turns out "Tempted by her Viking Enemy" is book 5 in a series. Although, I read it without having read the other 4 books. I still enjoyed the story.

Some of my favorite tropes are in this book, enemies to lovers, nursing him back to health, family fued.

But there were some things I found frustrating. Brandt has lost his entire future. I really felt it hard to believe he would let his defenses down so easily after suffering such a loss. It made the loss he suffered feel unimportant to me. I feel like the action in the story was glossed over which would have balanced the book out better if it had been elaborated on, since the fighting is a big deal for the characters in the book.

Overall... I was not convinced to read the other 4 books, but taking this for what it was, the romance was good!

So, unlike everyone else who read this the 5th book in the series, I actually read all 5 in order.
I am a fan of Terri Brisbin and looked forward to her book the most.
I am giving her a 4 star rating because she did a good job tying up all the loose ends that we all, we all those who have read the previous books, have been waiting for! It can definitely be read as a stand alone, all the stories can. A wish they had just made one big book with 5 authors and the continuing story line. Maybe there would have been less repetition of the events of the wedding massacre and where everyone was and where the all went afterwards. There is a similar character theme in all the books, the women are all daughters or step daughter of the enemy! Hmm...
Katla and Brandt had a pretty much instant physical attraction. She the enemy daughter and he the prisoner in the dungeon. I was surprised that the sexy times happened in the dungeon cell, when they could have been discovered. There was a lot of talking and planing and wondering who did what to who and when and where. How they were going to escape the castle and who they were going to take, I skipped a few pages here and there. A lot was discussed in previous books.
I guess I felt like a lot of pages were wasted on discussing what they were going to do to escape from the castle and trying to figure out was the main person behind the wedding massacre. I think that was decided in book 4? Well, I guess if you didn't read it, this caught you up!
I wish there had been more of the brothers showing up in this book 5. Brandt was on his own, injured and fighting the enemy. I kept expecting him to be rescued by 2 or 3 of the brothers who show up to rescue him from the dungeon. There was a disconnect in this book from the previous books with more brother solidarity and support.
The chemistry between Katla and Brandt was there but it was a slow burn and the eventual REAL consummation scene was handled well, showing Brisbin's experience! I like the fight scenes, they were believable with good description. There were a few surprises towards the end and Brisbin did wrap up things nicely. The epilogue was the first time that the brothers reunited in this one (and all the new wives) I really wanted a couple of them to come looking for Brandt and to be woven into the story before the climax and being apart of who was behind the wedding massacre.
The death of the person who caused all the mayhem at the wedding was sorta anti-climactic and semi- bad guys lived to be involved with other events or just disappeared! The tying up of some loose ends felt rushed.
I did find it odd that Katla spent so much time down in the cell with Brandt and no one really cared, they supposedly had many more sexy times without interruption! Close a couple of times.
If you like this one, read some of Brisbin's other books, maybe her non Harlequin stories.
All in all, glad I finished all 5, may favorite was Rurik story and this one.

This was a fantastic conclusion to the series. All five sons of Sigurd swore to avenge their father's death in a treacherous attack on their home. Each book follows the journey of one son in his search for the truth. Each of those sons finds love as well as moving closer to the truth. This is the story of Brandt, the oldest son and heir, who also lost his wife and unborn son on that terrible day. All of the clues the brothers gathered point to Thorfinn Bjornsson, the man who married their mother's sister.

Brandt shows up at Castle Wik and immediately challenges Thorfinn. Brandt is seriously injured, but his life is spared, ostensibly so he can face a trial before the king. Thorfinn charges his daughter, Katla, with nursing Brandt back to health. Katla and Brandt are wary of each other initially, despite or because of the sparks that flare between them. Katla had been married to an abusive man and was frequently beaten by her father, so Brandt makes her very nervous. Brandt is suspicious of Katla, wondering if she spied on him for her father.

I liked both Brandt and Katla. Brandt is an honorable man who was devastated by the deaths of his loved ones. He never expected to survive his confrontation with Thorfinn and isn't happy about it at first. As he slowly recovers from his injuries, he develops a great respect for Katla. Katla works hard to save Brandt and realizes that she has come to trust him. I was impressed by Katla's bravery as she visited him late at night, knowing that some would not be pleased. As the days passed, she and Brandt formed a solid friendship. Neither expected the sparks of attraction that flared between them, nor the deeper feelings that followed. Brandt never thought he'd have feelings for another woman until he met Katla, while Katla never thought she'd welcome a man's touch.

When Katla's father betroths her to a man she is terrified of, she begs Brandt to help her escape. He wants to protect her, but how can he leave without carrying out his plans to avenge his father? As he and Katla plan their escape, they also put their minds to discovering the truth behind his father's death. Some things that Brandt has learned do not make sense, leaving him with more questions. Katla has also experienced some unsettling revelations. When they combine what they know, they come to a startling conclusion. The ending was intense, as Katla provides the last piece of the puzzle that explains it all. There are some nail-biting moments as Brandt finally takes his revenge.

I loved the epilogue and how it brought the series full circle. There is an update on the brothers' quest for justice. We get to see all five brothers together again, this time with the women who changed their lives. I loved the scene around their father's grave and the depth of emotion displayed.

Tempted by Her Viking Enemy is book five in the Sons of Sigurd series and what a gorgeous story it was to complete it. Even though I had only previously read book four in the series, Redeeming Her Viking Warrior. I found that both of these books worked perfectly well as standalone stories. This was because the thread running throughout the series was explained and woven into the stories extremely well. Even though they work great as individual stories let’s just say that I’m eager to start at the beginning and catch up with the other brothers 😉

In Tempted by Her Viking Enemy we follow Brandt who is determined to get justice and revenge for his family. Which leads him to his enemies castle and into danger. What can I say about Brandt? Well for starters he is a wonderful character and one that I was instantly rooting for. He was strong but also had a vulnerable side that combined perfectly. When he meets Katla, let’s just say sparks begin to fly. Katla is also a brilliant character. She has such a caring and strong personality one that really shines through, especially when she cares for the injured Brandt. I loved their interactions which go from being wary of each other despite their attraction. Right through to the way the trust is slowly but surely built between the pair.

The story itself moves at a lovely pace and had all the elements of historical romance that I love. As I got to experience a gorgeous romance develop between Brandt and Katla. Along with the added danger from scheming villains. It’s safe to say that I raced through this book! Tempted by Her Viking Enemy is a wonderful enemies to lovers story that had the perfect amount of romance, drama and danger. I loved it!

This is book five in the ‘Sons of Sigurd’ series, each book can be read as a standalone story or can be read as part of the series. Each story concentrates on one of the five brothers who have all sworn to avenge their father’s death. As they set out on their quest each brother finds love in unexpected places. This is Brandt Sigurdsson’s story and the strong and honourable Viking is the only man who can help Katla escape from her violent marriage. However he is currently a prisoner in her father’s dungeon. Katla offers to help him escape in return for his help in fleeing but Brandt is too intent on seeing that justice is done for his family’s destruction. Katla ends up persuading him but she ends up giving away more than she expected. As she goes with Brandt as he acts out the final vengeance on behalf of all his brothers, the Sons of Sigurd the couple find they can not deny their chemistry forever and maybe they will be free to both live and love together. A wonderfully written historical romance. The storyline flows well and the narrative brings both the setting and the time period alive. I loved the relationship between the two main characters and how it developed throughout the book and how they go from enemies to lovers. The plot has both drama and suspense along with plenty of romance which kept me hooked until the last page. A lovely romantic read.

Terri gave this series a excellent ending. She tied up all the lose ends nicely. She gave Brandt Sigurdsson a second chance at love after so much loss! I loved the character Katla Thorfinnsdottir. Talk about long names. I like how Katla helped Brandt tie up some of the lose ends by connecting some of the dots thru logic. The story flows so well and the passes so quickly. The plans are made and the ending is such a surprise. But it ties everything together so nicely and points out who is the bad guy. The series is well done and worth reading from start to finish. My hat of to Michelle Willingham Stolen by the Viking, Harper St George Falling for Viking Captive, Michelle Styles Conveniently Wed to the Viking, and Jenni Fletcher Redeeming her Viking Warrior. All these ladies plus Terri have done a excellent job of bringing these 5 brothers to life and making the story flow from each book. I will miss them but I will be back to read them again. J

This one was a bit meh but I didn't mind it. There was definitely some plot to it that would've been supported better by the context of the previous books so I would recommend reading this as a series in order.

I liked the characters well enough. I liked that the heroine was proactive in escaping a bad situation and wasn't relying on the hero except to accompany her once she'd actually escaped. He also completely respected her wishes and didn't act until she told him to.

I loved that they worked together to get to the bottom of things and solve the mystery of who was against them, why and how. By working together hey were able to have a better understanding of the situation and stop it.

Honestly, that sister at the end is a woman after my own heart. I wish we had gotten more of her but I think she might be the next book? I also love the aunt who is no nonsense telling the heroine how it is and what she can do.

I didn't like that the father was hot and cold. You can see why he might have been but I still think it kind of makes him a shit father that someone can spew lies in his ear and he believes them treating his daughter like that. I don't know what his goals were in acting that way.

I usually read Terri brisbin's Scottish historicals, but when this novel won the NJ Golden Leaf award for best historical romance, I was eager to read her Viking story! The main characters were people I immediately empathisized with, and wanted to cheer them to a happy ending! The book moved forward at a good clip and I wanted the hero and heroine to solve their problems. Brisbin wrapped evrything up in a satisfying ending. Well done!

I don't usually read Viking Romance, but this one captured me on page one and I stayed a happy captive until there was a happy ending.

My only regret is that the story ended.

"The best steamy romance novel in the history of steamy romance novels, possibly ever."

I don't even know how many stars to give this book. Like I thought it would be terrible but it wasn't, but it wasn't a feat of literary genius either. There's actually so much plot?

The one thing that really caught me off guard was how this quintessential female fantasy was less about having a hot guy with a massive dong and more how the quintessential female fantasy is to be with a man who doesn't treat you like a garbage can and respects your choices. See I haven't read a lot of unashamedly vapid romance novels, but I defo thought the leading lady would be horrendously insecure and "not like other girls." The lead was actually pretty chill. Idk, I feel less narrow-minded about this genre now which makes me really happy and I now know of a solid author who doesn't write annoying female protagonists in romance novels so I guess Terry is my go-to now?

The only technical downsides are that the Kindle version has a teeny amount of grammar mistakes and the prose is tooooootallllllyyyy purple.

The author's note at the end is really sweet tbh and this author seems like a super cool human.

I hadn't read the earlier books in this series (which are by different authors) but basically, a Viking man is trying to avenge the death of family, and he hot-headedly challenges a Norse lord to combat and gets beaten. The majority of the rest of the story takes place in his prison cell as he is recovering from his wounds, with physical slavery his foreseeable destiny.
While I like the descriptive writing, and the Norse daughter who has little say in her life but, half-Pictish, has more power and status than her Pict relatives, the constant revisiting of scenes in the dungeon (no place to start a romance, in that dirt) didn't feel exciting. Some readers might enjoy this more than I did.
I read this e-ARC from Net Galley and Fresh Fiction. This is an unbiased review.

How do you save Bravo in Norse?

This was the best of the series. It might be because I have waited for it for so long and wondered how it would all come together.

I wasn't sure I would like Brandt because I thought he would be too much like Sigurd and singularly focused on avenging his family's honor but he was not a hot head and was kind to Katla.

Katla was easy to like but seemed a little closed off at first.

I already miss this series.
