Redemption

The ninth books cliff hanger left me disappointed, curious and scared of what was going to happen next. In all honesty I was very afraid that my favourite series had just went down the drain, my only mistake was to not trust the awesomeness

Spoilers Shmaybe....

This book was an excellent conclusion to book 09. I know that it's ridiculous that they keep pulling off the impossible each time but I love it. I found the ending of this book very satisfied. I'm extremely glad that it did not end with an no hope cliffhanger like the last book. Keep up the good work!

NOTE: There was a problem with the goodreads system, where my draft review was deleted prior to posting it. The comments about this book being a Mavericks review instead of THIS book was correct at the time it was posted, but my review as seen below has been updated.

I am consuming RC Bray's excellent *as usual* read of the material, via Audible. My comments are therefore about time, not pages...

Starts off well with a clever way to resolve the cliffhanger (chapter 1), but then falls off a cliff. Nearly 5 hours of tedious slog kept me repeating (out loud for the first 2 hours) "GET ON WITH IT!" as we see the story unfold from 3 different perspectives, each unaware of how the others were getting on. That would have been interesting if it weren't predictable how each viewpoint would resolve. It wasn't interesting and comes nearly full circle to the point where if it (roughly chapters 3 through 10) were skipped 100%, the only thing unknown would be why people are pissed at each other and Skippy. It was fluff, filler, and a waste of money buying this book.

My other general problem with the series as it has evolved, is that ALL humans are described as incapable of comprehending the science (Skippy magic, essentially) taking place around around them. Other authors, notably Peter F Hamilton, Stephen Moss, and Alastair Reynolds give humans a lot more credit for being able to fully develop, or at least co-opt technology and run with it. Yeah yeah, then we wouldn't have the Skippy verbal beat-downs. It's gotten tiring IMO.

The *Alanson Flaw* is defined as over-explanation of a boring subject to add words to a tome. It's sort of like some of those long-winded articles on the Politico website. You've got the point but it is explained so repetitively that eventually you quit reading.

The book does improve past the halfway point, since it gets to the point. Not much action, and a lot of conversation/rumination/worry... the low points are the shameless advertisement for MAVERICKS BOOK 2 "FREEFALL", and several cringeworthy cultural references to the author's apparent Netflix addiction, including a stoner type AI who actually utters "righteous" (Bill & Ted are dead, stoners don't use those catchphrases).

The conclusion is "fun" but wholly unrealistic, at times silly, and then the final final is tedious. I may or may not read the final volume in this series, and if I do - I will be giving it the MST3K treatment the whole time. And I'm adding Alanson to my list with Scalzi of "DO NOT READ ANY NEW WORKS BY THESE AUTHORS" because both are lazy - they made money and now don't even try to flesh something out fully, taking shortcuts and padding out with trite dialog reminiscent of bad TV situation comedies.

2* up from 1, but you gotta get past the middle to see why.

This is unquestionably the best novel in the series. It's also the most complete book. For the first time, I finished the book feeling utterly and completely satisfied. Craig could have taken an easy out and stretched this book into two, or he could have left the last little bit unfinished. Fortunately for us, he wrapped everything into one, cohesive story, closing various plot threads and leaving the reader with a smile on his or her face. The last 10-15% of the book was just phenomenal and what the reader has been looking for since this journey began. Well done Craig! Looking forward to the next adventure of the Merry Band of Pirates.

This latest episode of Joe & Skippy breaks the mold. The saga is starting to move to a climactic conclusion - still several books away, but you can see it coming. Continue to really enjoy this series.

My absolute favorite in the series so far. Even though it is book 10, you ask? Why yes, because R. C. Bray is a freaking master at creating these characters and I feel like I know them all personally. He is even fantastic at portraying the female characters. The last 10% of the book had me yelling out loud and laughing because I have waited 10 books for that moment. I can't wait to see where this story goes from here because shit is getting real.

Again I wish this would be turned into a TV series. I can't believe I now have to wait for the next book.

Jau kārtējo reizi iepriekšējās Armageddon grāmatas ietvaros Džozefam ‘’Džo’’ Bišopam, mākslīgajam intelektam Skipijam kopā ar pārējiem pašiesauktajiem pirātiem izdevās paglābt Zemi no īstermiņa draudiem, bet ar katru reizi tā vien šķiet jauni draudi cilvēces eksistencei uzrodas ātrāk un vēl nopietnāki nekā pirms tam. Turklāt jebkurus plānus sarežģī fakts, ka viņu darbības pagaidām vēl nedrīkst ļaut citām sugām, it īpaši vispēcīgākajām Maxolhx (kaķveidīgi)un Rindhalu (zirnekļveidīgi), ka cilvēces rīcībā ir kaut kas tik spēcīgs kā Vecajo radīts AI.

I was so afraid of where this story was heading after the way the previous book ended. I won't give away spoilers but IMO this book was a SLAM DUNK. I continue to be amazed by Craig Alanson's imagination. Can't wait for the next installment.

Best Exforce book yet

There's been many times while reading all the books that I scanned over all the tedious back and forth between Joe and Skippy. I enjoyed *listening* to it all, Bray does a fantastic job of keeping a person engaged, but reading it? Suckitude.

Critical Mass didn't have any tedious bits, it was entertaining and fun the entire trip. Best ExForce book so far. Love all the answered questions, and that there's still huge mysteries still to resolve but no cliffhanger to drive me bonkers for months.

After such a huge cliffhanger from the last book, I was eager to see what happened in this one. I like where the story went and the ending was really great!

I love the Expeditionary Force series. I am also a huge fan of R.C. Bray's audio presentation, which is the basis of this review. Amazing how he can bring the characters to life.

In Critical Mass, the cliffhanger for Valkyrie is resolved early. Resolution is a large part of what this book does. Skippy returns in a big way, saving a captured Joe from the Thuranin, while the crews of Valkyrie and the Flying Dutchman deal with their respective catastrophes. What follows is a desperate race as Skippy discovers that the wormhole he started moving is going to make access to Earth, and its destruction, a certainty for the Maxolhx. The Merry Band of Pirates must get to Earth first to save as much of humanity as they can.

In all, the book is a progression. Joe goes from Earth-Is-Doomed to One-Last-Chance, and his decisions will change the universe.

I think this is my favorite book of the whole series. There's just so much great stuff that happens. After all the tragedy previously, things start going far more in the favor of the Pirates. And there are little details I catch on each re-read. Always a pleasure and full of laughter.

December 2020

Re-read because the next book is coming out, just to refresh my memory. Still just as good the second time - and the laughing! What a pleasure to enjoy it all the second time around.

I tried to really take my time with this book, to stretch it out as much as possible. That said, I sped through it because I couldn't put it down. Alanson covered a lot here - and many characters grew and changed. Among them - Sims, Reed, Chang, Smyth, even Emily Perkins. The whole thing Joe went thru was really good, since it continued to highlight the way he doubts himself and expects too much. And this while everyone else is admiring his example. He's a humble guy and I appreciate that.

One character who didn't grow or change was Margaret Adams, and this push-pull tension thing with them is starting to just annoy me - me, a romance lover! It's the one thing that remains a loose end. I kept waiting for that to get wrapped up just like everything else did, and nope, guess we still have to wait.

The ending here was really satisfying. Still, what's next for the MBP? Will there continue to be the spinoff series with the Mavericks? Will we spend another 10 books fighting the kitties and spiders? I'm up for whatever - I just love these characters and this world.

And I love to laugh. There were so many times I'd be wearing earbuds and just laugh out loud. I got some strange looks! But the way RC Bray brings this series to life is one of life's pleasures. It is not to be missed.

BLUF: "In conclusion, a very enjoyable book, a worthy addition to the series, a perfect set up for the next and just overall a delight."

While my fears at the end of the previous book as to how Alanson could possibly save the various groups without immediately undoing the events that led to the cliffhanger weren't realised, he skirted dangerously close. On the other hand, that does mean that he managed what I'd considered a wholly impossible feat.

As expected (read hoped), Skippy's return was not remotely drawn out but he did manage to have the various ships crews survive predominantly on their own cunning which I appreciated and once again, he pulled a star-studded rabbit out of his hat with a magnificent ending that I would never have seen coming.

The ending as a whole was spectacular. I'd listened to most of the book while cross-stitching and at several points had to put my needle down for fear my shivers of excitement would cause injury. Now I understand why I need to own a thimble. Occasionally when reading, I come across a scene that feels to me as if the author wrote it more for the movie it would eventually be adapted to, rather than the book. This book's climax is such a series of scenes where everything from the building tensions, the final stand, the cavalry's charge and the flashbacks reintroducing the first act's MacGuffin were just as you'd expect them on the big screen. I could practically hear the music swell. Now perhaps that's just the way my brain engages with books, perhaps it's because I was enjoying R. C. Bray's narration (stupendous btw) or perhaps it was a deliberate decision by the author but regardless, it was magnificent!

In conclusion, a very enjoyable book, a worthy addition to the series, a perfect set up for the next and just overall a delight.

This far in I'm not going to abandon the series, but honestly, it's getting worse.

The author is running into the same issues that all long lasting series have, which is a bunch of established super hero characters, an established setting, established rules and context which lead to a very narrow set of plot elements. As fillers we get redshirts and the alien of the day.

The beginning and end of the book are the weakest. The story tries to backtrack from the epic wtf cliffhanger and go to business as usual; towards the end everything is pretty much meaningless as we get a deus ex machina.

I'm not really looking forward to the next book, but will probably soldier on to see what happens next :-)

Absolutely satisfying!

The author gathered all the tendrils of the previous nine Skippy books, along with all the previous Mavericks books, and tied them into a splendid plot conclusion that left me smiling.

There are minor flaws. I counted at least ten editing errors, and the multi-pov narrative of the first seven chapters won't be for some readers. But those flaws won't matter once you reach the terrific grin-inducing last three chapters. All the ExForce and Mavericks books you read will pay off nicely in this book.

Absolutely recommended for fans of the series!

Enjoyed the book. The last 10 % was really satisfying. I kinda wish the book have epilogue where Maxolhx talks about the event that just happened. Overall, it was worth the wait and cannot wait for the next book.

The continuing adventures of Joe and his beer can best friend skippy along with the merry band of pirates. The biggest challenge facing humanity was solved in the last book when Joe was finally able to enjoy a proper fluffer nutter. In this book something truly shocking happens when a member of the crew makes a fluffer nutter of their own that is a true abomination to fluffer nutters. Joe takes decisive action to prevent the offending thing from spreading. In all seriousness this is yet another riveting, funny and endearing book in the Expeditionary force series. The merry band of pirates are really up against the wall in this book and the law of unintended consequences bites them in the ass yet again. This was book 10 and each book takes about 20 hours to read. So I have spent a good 200 hours with this group and I am worried that there are only 4 more books in the series and the 14th book was released recently so I think I will have quite a wait until book 15 comes out. I had spent the last couple of years just trying to find as many new authors as possible so that after hoovering up a new authors books I would not then go into a reading slump. But I am afraid that after I finish this series nothing else will seem worth my time because nothing else compares.

Disclaimer: Once again I listened to the audiobook. RC. Bray does a masterful job at voicing all of the characters and sets a horribly high standard for all voice actors while we reap the benefits.

The 10th installment to the long-running series does not disappoint. The past few entries have been somewhat lacking in substance but this entry changes the trend thankfully. Following right after the 9th entry cliff hanger, I was fully engaged and even listened to the book outside of my usual drive to and from work. What I think sets this installment apart from the rest of the series is the delicious character arc and real character development of Skippy. My only big issue is that I wish the story could be told more from his point of view. But following around the titular Joe Bishop, is also just fine by me. I hope this isn't the end of the series but I would understand if it was sidelined. 10 entries is quite a bit of writing by the author. The universe is so vast and interesting.

CRITICAL MASS is the 10th book in the Expeditionary Force series and one that finally solves a lot of the series plotliens that had been stewing for a long time. To avoid spoilers, it changes everything about the premise of the series and that was something the stories were in bad need of. Simply put, it seemed like things had become a circle of trying to cover up Earth had liberated itself from the Kristaang.

I'm glad to see that Craig Alanson was willing to upend the nature of his stories and think this is one of the best plot developments in the series as a result. I'd rate the book higher for it but it was a plot development too long in the making, IMHO. The ending is also a bit "deus ex machina" but what are you going to do? That's pretty much the series signature at this point.

Now this is more like it. I'm glad I powered through the first 10% because I was ready to give up on this series as I didn't see an improvement from the previous book.

Boy, was I wrong. Finally things are happening and the status quo is changing. I'm looking forward now to the next book.

Yup! I am definitely going to finish this series.

The ending of the last book had me sweating bullets. Safe to say, the monkeys are finally winning.

The ending had me jumping to my feet. It was so good.

They need to give Jo a love story because he deserves happiness too.

Good round-up

Takes the first ten books to a satisfactory conclusion. Obviously more to come but an enjoyable read. Little bit rushed in the last 3 chapters but that’s something I’ve noticed at the end of other sf space operas.
