Storm Chasers #1

Natural Disaster

Rate this book
When two tornado chasers form a reluctant team, the pressure between them builds….

Human-interest reporter—and son of a famous storm chaser—Guthrie Gale wants nothing to do with severe weather. But his station’s director insists he join the storm chasing team, or else, and worse yet, she pairs him with hotshot rookie chaser Luke Masters.

All Luke wants is to be a part of the KTTY family, and he won’t let prickly Guthrie Gale spoil his chance. Little does he realize Guthrie’s anxiety around storms is more than justified.

As Oklahoma’s unpredictable tornado season picks up, Guthrie and Luke strike up a turbulent working relationship that shifts between lust and bickering. But when they are forced to outrun a dangerous twister, their trust is tested and the desire between them flashes quick as lightning, threatening to burn more than just their careers.

I don't know what is happening with me and Erin McLellan lately, but I swear I normally like her stuff! But, if I'm being brutally honest, this was hard for me to finish.

The kiss of death for me is when a book is boring, and I could barely get through it. And I thought I was getting GAY TWISTER. Expectations vs reality were waaaay off.

The story wasn't bad, but there was very little chemistry between the MCs. Maybe there wasn't enough buildup or something, but I just couldn't connect with them as a couple. Things between them happen pretty quickly, which I usually don't like, and then the book felt like it lost steam. The momentum just dropped.

I sort of enjoyed learning about the storm chasers and weather, but even the storm chasing stuff felt tired.

I don't know, I feel like a grump because I wanted passion and that intensity and I just didn't get it. I know Erin McLellan can do better.

This book is so far up my alley it's not funny. A pair of sweet, troubled characters each seeking something different and finding it in the other one, check! 😍 A series of increasingly tense and dangerous situations for them to banter through, check!! 😍😍 Tech talk and weather science, hell yes check!!! 😍😍😍

Many thanks to the author for an ARC! 😘

ETA, check this out!! Animated cover!!

This was one of those cute, low angst romances that was predicable and I won't remember much about it because it's mostly fluff but I enjoyed it and there were no glaring issues with it. I loved the unique premise - the MCs are partnered up to be storm chasers by the local Oklahoma TV station that they work for.

While the story tried to be an enemies-to-lovers setup, the author had the MCs get along well pretty much from the start and the lack of real conflict between them and the intense chemistry they shared meant the MCs romance had forward momentum from the moment they met. I like that the author allowed the characters to lead the story but I wish more conflict had been introduced between them. They quickly realize their personalities blend really well and they get along very well as storm chasing partners so there are no obstacles to them getting together. There's some ridiculous manufactured drama in the last third where which fizzled out really fast because again - the MCs were leading the story and they made it clear how stupid that whole thing was.

There was an interesting potential source of conflict in the form of Guthrie's famous father, who is an egotistical, immature jerk who thinks his storm chasing reality TV show is the most important thing on earth and his starring role in it makes him the most important person on earth. His relationship with Guthrie was interesting but the author never did much with this potential. Guthrie's dad would randomly show up/call/text and demand that Guthrie do what he says, Guthrie would ignore him and the dad would disappear for a few more chapters. It was surprisingly boring and the author could have done much more with that.

I did enjoy the strong focus on meteorology (specifically rainstorms and tornados) and how the world of weather reporting works in tornado-heavy regions like Oklahoma. I'm not familiar with such things at all so I loved learning more about that part of the world. The author did a great job portraying all characters as professionals who know their stuff but while there was a glossary included at the start, I felt a bit lost from time to time regarding the weather terminology and I wish the author had provided a bit more context.

Another thing I liked was how Guthrie's anxiety issues and Luke's long time fear of abandonment (he was raised in the foster care system) were woven throughout the story story and how both issues led to wonderful hurt/comfort scenarios and also advanced the relationship between the MCs.

Overall, this was an enjoyable read but unfortunately, it was lacking that special zing that I need for a story to deserving of 5 stars. But if you're in the mood for a low angst, kind of fluffy romance with a unique backdrop, you'll probably enjoy this one.

This was so unexpectedly wholesome and sweet! Guthrie and Luke had such wonderful communication. They both knew their own hangups and history, and how that impacted their reactions to events...and then discussed it with each other. And recognized when it was affecting them. Just 100% perfect.

I also loved all the midwestern speech, and the storm descriptions were incredible. So vivid. It was like seeing the storms all over again - that ominous feeling when the world goes still and green......ooof. So well done.

All around a really great read!

This was a nice change from the usual m/m books I read. I've never read a book about storm chasers. I've always loved severe weather, especially tornadoes, so I was really excited for this book. I enjoyed the excitement and danger in this book, but I really hoped for more. I wanted more storms, more danger, and maybe more canoodling when the weather got serious.

Guthrie and Luke are both afraid to trust. Luke wants to so settle down and have family, friends, a partner. He wants stability. Guthrie is afraid to put his heart out there because he was burned in the past. But neither of them can deny their attraction and quickly grow to trust each other, and want to be together. They have flirty banter and chemistry.

I did enjoy this read, but I felt like it was rushed toward the end. I felt like the situation with Slim was unresolved, and for me, there just weren't enough tornadoes!

I liked the premise of storm chasers, but something was missing here. There was potential for amazing depth and angst but the story and resolution just seemed to scratch the surface.

This turned out better than I expected! It got a bit of a slow start, but once the MC’s got together they had great chemistry. This book is essentially the movie Twister, except realistic and gay. So, 1000% better. Unfortunately there were no flying cows.

2.5 stars. I was going to round this up until the dumb-assery at the end. The storm chasing as a thing you do to pay the bills was interesting. The rest was eh.

Most of this novel is freaking awesome, particularly for weather nerds like me. You'll probably enjoy it if the premise appeals to you, so don't let this review stop you! I'm glad I read it and I'd do it again knowing what I know now.

That said, the tornado representation was better than the mental health rep. Y'all who wish for more tornadoes here? No, that's not how weather works. This isn't a ridiculous Hollywood version of tornado threats. I really appreciated that in this novel. Yes, I am a weather nerd. :)

While the novel's pretty good regarding Guthrie's panic disorder, the Epilogue is too simplistic. It didn't get the loving, aware writing it needed. Whoever was editor, shame on you for missing that weather awareness does not just vanish. I tell you, as someone who's still aware what to do in an earthquake, who still hates dry summers fire season, and who's lived in annual hurricane threat for over thirty years; the vigilance and physical reactions do not disappear. And it has to be worse for someone with a weather-specific panic disorder. So read this novel aware of the failing at the end, and tell others, because that is how we make it better going forward.

This is a really sweet book. I always love reading a book set in my home state, and being able to understand the references and locations for once added to my enjoyment. Also, I love the storm chaser angle. It's an interesting profession and it's fun to read about it. Guthrie and Luke are sweet guys who each need to let go of the past and accept they're allowed to be happy, which they each help the other to do. Guthrie gets over his daddy issues and Luke gets over his abandonment issues. I love that there's no TRUE angst. There's some exciting close calls but everything is handled maturely and not really turned into a huge THING. It's refreshing. I can't wait to read the next book. I'm curious who it will be.

All reviews are voluntary and my honest opinion.

Guthrie's got a lot of issues with his father. He doesn't want to be a storm chaser, but his station is low on funding, so he agrees to come back. His rookie partner, Luke, is a California pretty boy. It takes Guthrie a little while to warm up, despite their chemistry.

A sweet little love story set in tornado season Oklahoma. I liked the banter and the interviews. I did want a little more chase action. If you're interested in tornados, this might be a good pick.

This story has so much energy! There’s a constant underlying tension in the KTTY newsroom as storm chasers tackle coverage of tornadoes across the Oklahoma countryside. The tension spreads to readers as we get to know the storm chaser characters, their hopes, dreams, and fears.

It’s the fear that grabbed me most in this story. Guthrie Gale, the well-known human interest reporter who’s the son of infamous storm chaser Slim Bridges wants no part of chasing tornadoes, but with budget cuts at the station, he’s strong-armed into taking on a rookie for the season. What no one knows, however, is that Guthrie had a close experience with a tornado when he was a child, on a chase with his father, that’s left him with high anxiety and the fear that he won’t survive the season.

Rookie chaser Luke Masters is a great character. Young, sweet, good-looking, intelligent, interested, and with nerves of steel, Luke also shows compassion and a strong focus when they are in the field that helps calm Guthrie’s nerves, at least a little.

After one close storm, their attraction explodes into a close encounter of the sexual kind and the two realize they need to face the fact their attraction might lead to problems in the workplace. So they make a pact to remain “friends only” until the end of the season when they can explore whether they want to remain friends or start a relationship. For different reasons, both men are done playing the field and each would like a lasting relationship so they know there’s a chance for more after the season. But during the story, as the season progresses, so much happens to bring them closer and learn more about each other that it’s readily apparent they’d be good for each other.

The tornado season doesn’t pass quietly, though, and when they’re caught in the field with no backup and a twister heading their way, the real nail-biting begins.

I loved the slow burn, the banter, the camaraderie, and the way Guthrie’s anxiety is expressed, discussed, and shown throughout the book. Luke’s fear of abandonment is also addressed and explored. The story’s conclusion isn’t a quick resolution to everyone’s issues but does provide a satisfying hope for a happy future.

I definitely recommend this story to those who love their MM with hashtags—friends to lovers, coworkers, dangerous professions, storm chasers, reporters, PTSD, anxiety disorder, and age gap. What a great book!

I read the blurb and early plug about the book, and sold on the words: Think twister, but gay . I like Twister so hey, why not!

A combo of forced proximity and enemies to lovers tropes, NATURAL DISASTER had me sticked to the pages from start to finish. Guthrie Gale and Luke Masters couldn’t be more different with the way they were brought up. It’s heartbreaking and heartwarming all at the same time. Their reluctant attraction and slow-burn romance was genuine and congenial. I couldn’t fault either men for their imperfect temperament, it made them human and real! Added the chasing scene, the chaos (the disaster causing), all combined into an engaging tale.

I’m not fan of the rushed ending though. The whole life-changing decision, ensuing results, and love declaration seemed to be in a race and to fill in designated checkpoints to get to the finish line. Personally I thought it could use a bit of tweak to smoothen the delivery.

NATURAL DISASTER is my first Erin McLellan’s book (although I have a couple of her backlist titles on my queueing list). And this intro to McLellan’s writing assure me I’d be moving those titles forward soonish!

3.5 stars. This was a sweet quick read. I really wanted more, especially more time with them after they became a couple. I liked how they got to know each other and became friends. Guthrie wants nothing to do with storm chasing or storm chasers. All Luke wants is stability, a family, friends and a partner. Luke is the new guy at the station and needs a partner chasing tornados. Guthrie’s boss teams them up and instead of him coming clean and letting her know that he is afraid of chasing tornados, he goes along with it. When they are staring down a monster, Guthrie realizes that this is not what he wants and runs. He does finally come to his senses and realizes that Luke is who he really wants.

Enjoyable, but ultimately forgettable. Could’ve benefited from some more fleshing out as everything seemed a bit rushed. The tornado chasing angle was cool and the MCs were sweet so I was hoping to like this one more.

This author did a bang up job on Oklahoma doing the storm season and the storm chasers. The connection between the two MCs could have used a little more work.

Contemporary can get repetitive. And I don't like contemporary that much in the first place.

Adding some storm chasing and weather focus was a good move and helped to keep my attention.

Low on angst, with stable and nice characters.

Recommend.

This was sweet, but felt maybe a little shorter than the author's previous works? Or maybe that's because I wanted to read more about Guthrie and Luke.

Guthrie Gale is a a reporter for a local news station, KTTY, and mainly does fluff pieces, which he enjoys. When a storm chaser is out on maternity leave, he gets directed to work with the new, and attractive, storm chaser - Luke Masters. Luke has come from California and has been looking for a workplace that's inviting and diverse, and a place where he can find friends and family. Guthrie hasn't had the best experience with storm chasing and isn't looking forward to his new assignment, but he soon realizes that Luke isn't all that bad.

This book is told in third-person, with alternating POVs. I love that we get the story from both Guthrie and Luke's perspective. Both of them are really sweet and lovely. I wouldn't say this book was really heavy on angst and not really quite as heart-wrenching with anxiety as the author's previous books, but Guthrie does have pretty big anxiety about tornadoes because of past experience. The author is very good about trigger warnings and does list them out at the beginning of the book, so do check that out if you need to!

The only previous experience I have with stories about local news teams is the movie Nightcrawler with Jake Gyllenhaal, but this book is quite different from that, which might be a good thing. I was very interested in reading about how local news channels work and what local news channels go through when reporting about severe weather. This book does have a glossary in the book, and the words are all listed in the front, which is very helpful. As someone who grew up in Alabama where tornadoes are a big thing, I really enjoyed reading this book and have a newfound appreciation for the people who brings us up-to-date, and live footage, of tornadoes.

I recommend this book for the flirty sweetness that is Guthrie and Luke, and also for a story I've never read before pertaining storm chasers and their harrowing job!

4.5 ⭐️ rounded up

What a wonderful surprise!! I’d never read this author or heard of this book but thanks to @angelfire it landed on my list and I couldn’t be more pleased! First, I love storm chasing and I’ve been fascinated with tornados and wild weather since I was a child - McLellan’s research shown through here and was the reason I rounded up. She didn’t over-explain things or info dump, it just was incorporated seamlessly into conversations and plot. I loved that we got both Luke’s and Guthrie’s POV, they were different characters with backstories that informed their behavior and desires (though I wouldn’t have minded a little more…closure? on Guthrie’s side). They both felt real and had real chemistry together, were knowledgeable and professional (I truly HATE when authors have their MCs behaving stupidly for plot purposes - this was the opposite). I liked that their HEA and the epilogue felt realistic and heartfelt. Really, I just wanted to spend more time with them and get to know both of them better! This was a little short for me!

Lastly, wanted to point out the author’s clear love of Oklahoma (she is from there) and her dedication to showing the diversity of its people.

All around, this was a really enjoyable read that was so far up my alley it was parked in my garage. Your mileage may vary re all the weather stuff but I definitely recommend!

I was really excited to read NATURAL DISASTER because I loved the idea of storm chasers and while I did enjoy that aspect of the story, overall it's just not a book that will stick with me forever. Both Guthrie and Luke are great heroes and while their ideas of success are very different, they fit in many other ways. Guthrie was the charming, simplistic cowboy who's grown up around twisters and learned the hard way how dangerous they can be. In contrast, Luke is a California boy with an easy-going personality and a determination to put down roots and find the family he never had while in the foster care system. The forced proximity of storm chasing gives these guys plenty of time to get to know each other and let the tension build as they put their lives on the line.

My one big complaint is that the "voices'' of Luke and Guthrie were much too similar and I often forgot whose POV I was reading. Considering how different these two are supposed to be, they shouldn't have come across so similar. Other than that, this was a good read and I liked the characters from KTTY that were introduced.

4.5 Stars 💖 A new author for me with this book.
A great fast paced book, this got me glued in straight away. The chemistry between them is great with the little banter especially with their bets game. Things are going along okay, until Guthrie's nightmare crashes back into his life or tries to.. Both are a missed matched pair trust issues vs needing to feel connected.  I enjoyed the story which was a unique storyline I reminded me of the movie Twister which I loved.
Includes dislike to lovers, tension filled banter, scary tornadoes, sexy scenes and more.
Guthrie was the weather person at the news station. Now lump to chase storms cause of low staffing. Guess what he hated tornadoes. Lol and saddled with a rookie chaser, Luke they've a good time..hmmm lol

This is the first book in The Storm Chasers Series. The writing was okay there were places that it was good but others that it needed help. With fiction there are many ways to write when using reality. But you shouldn’t sacrifice one thing for another. And you need to be accurate and true unless you are fictionalizing an aspect. You can’t force an event or it will ruin the flow of the story as well as make the story had to accept. The flow of this story was uneven and at times jarring. The plot was entertaining and it was steady throughout the book. I found the story and characters interesting. Some aspects of the secondary characters were confusing or unnecessary because they didn’t further the story or character line. Luke and Guthrie are the MC’s of this book. I voluntarily read an advance copy of this book for an honest review.

3.5 Stars. I liked this one - the storm chasing parts were really interested and a couple of them were fairly intense - although I expected a bit more intensity. I think I was looking for a M/M Twister and this one didn't quite deliver for that. I did really like both MC's and I liked them together. It was a slow burn - friends to lovers which I enjoyed however we really don't get any time with them after they become a couple which I would have liked.

I really liked this, but I wanted more. I felt like Luke and Guthrie were too quick. I didn't believe in their relationship like I wanted to.
