The Merrow Who Angered Poseidon
The Man Who Loves Her
And an Evil that could destroy them both
The Sea Is Calling. . .

Lena—who was born as a merrow but walks as a human—is now in possession of the Magiske Skal: the shell once owned by the queen of the merrows. With its power comes untold danger, and should it fall into the wrong hands, the Fosse-Søfolk will face an evil they cannot overcome. Lord Jarl knows what Lena has, and he wants it for himself.

After running away from the Lundby-Wyatt Inn, leaving behind everything she was familiar with, Lena finds herself in the company of the warm and kind Soren Emil.
When the villagers turn against her and Soren, they’re forced to leave the burning Bror Boghandel behind and escape to a forgotten cottage on the edge of the shore, where no one will find them. Lena knows she must get the shell back to the sea and destroy it, before it falls into the hands of Lord Jarl—or worse, his possessive apprentice, Jace Wyatt.

With the help of some unruly pirates, Lena and Soren journey to the sea, where Lena thought she'd never return. There, she will have to face not only the Sea King’s army, the Fosse-Søfolk, but the impossible choice to sacrifice her own life, or the life of the man she loves to keep the Magiske Skal from the evil that craves it.

What will Lena choose? Who will win the struggle for power?

Thank you to Parliament House Books for providing me with a copy of this book, in exchange for an honest review!

After the events at the end of the first book, Lena is hiding out with Soren, in possession of the Magiske Skal. Unable to trust the rest of the village, who seem to be quick to believe anything Lord Jarl says, and afraid to fall back into the clutches of Jace, Lena knows there is no choice but to destroy the shell before Lord Jarl gets his hands on it.

But When Lena and Soren set out on the journey to get rid of the shell, Lena learns what must be done to destroy it….and it’s something she’d could never do.

I loved Between the Sea and Stars and Beyond the Shore and Shadows was a brilliant sequel! Lena felt more mature this time and not such a pushover as in the first book. Chantal is an expert at creating that dark, atmospheric fairytale vibe.

There was a fair amount of romance involved in this one and I’m not a big fan of romance in books, but the rest of the story was so engaging I didn’t mind. For romance lovers, the tenderness between Lena and Soren will be right up your alley though!

If you love dark fairytale retellings, you definitely need to pick this series up.

If you wish to avoid the main plot reveal, it is suggested that you read only the first and last paragraphs of my review.

The legend of the sea and the shell in Lena's possession continues. It is known among the merrows and the curious humans as the magisk skal. Lena informs Soren of who she is and the power contained in that one little shell tied around her neck gifted by her deceased brother, Javelin. Soren promises to keep her safe. Lena believes wherever she is and whomever she encounters that she and they will always be in danger—and for a while throughout the story this remains true. Soren and Lena are unable to deny more than the attraction they have for one another. They have fallen in love. Though neither is assertive enough to outright say it they become closer and display lighthearted affection towards one another. Their romantic refuge at the bookstore is disrupted as Jace demands Soren Emil to return Lena to him. Throughout Lena's sojourn she is ensnared in the middle of several men who ogle her, treat her poorly and do not recognize her worth beyond the treasure that has become a burden to her. She understands that whoever has it in their possession can control the high seas. Greed and power and the primary motivations in which Jace, who later returns to Lord Jarl, Jace's master to steal it from her.

Soren and Lena escape through a tunnel and set sail to a cottage. Jace, Lord Jarl and a few villagers set the bookstore aflame. This scene is reminiscent of a witchhunt in which several of the locals who have nothing to do with the matter are recruited through propaganda and hysteria. Lena and Soren arrive at a cottage. Soren reassures her that he will keep her safe. Lena's inner dialogue concerning men continues to cast doubt that she can trust any man. She recalls how initially Jace was kind to her, provided her shelter, food and clothing and the horrific change she witnessed in his eyes, personality and priorities. Back at the cottage she confronts him when he says he cares for her. Lena grows in her understanding of the world and of the unfortunate person Jace has become. Though Soren and Lena are able to rest for a couple of nights, Jace once again has located them. Soren and Jace exchange words. Jace threatens and accosts Lena. Soren is able to make Jace leave the cottage. This is the second refuge that Soren and Lena escape to—and it will not be their last. Soren decides that he and Lena must set sail into the high seas as far away from the village as possible. He gathers his most prized possessions, his mother's broken shell and research on the myth. Soren is able to secure passage onto a pirate ship, promising his mother's broken treasure as payment. Lena recalls the story that the old merrow woman tells that for the magisk skal to be destroyed, Lena would have to destroy what she loved most or herself. Lena secretly chooses to kill herself in order to save Soren, the only man whom she truly loves. While Soren is asleep in their inhospitable quarters, the merrow hears the seas calling for her. It is the old merrow woman. She gives Lena the dagger and reminds her of what she must do. Still aboard the ship, Lena explains to Soren what the woman said. She believes that she has to return to the seas to safeguard the shell from the humans. Soren believes that this is the last night that he and Lena will see each other. He takes her to the private quarters and gently guides her to pure intimacy. Lena has matured beyond coming of age when earlier she contemplates Sorens beauty and how he was the consummate of everything she wanted in a man. Lena tells Soren she loves him again and Soren shares the same feelings for her.

The next day, Captain Asher reveals his betrayal to the two passengers. Both Jace and Lord Jarl paid their way aboard and hid themselves among the seaman. They already called for another seafaring vessel to arrive near and intended to kidnap Lena and the shell. Another confrontation ensues. Lena hears the seas calling. Lena finds herself in the middle of conflict of men, some known and unknown, most with ulterior and likely deadly motives. This time it is a different voice, it is Asger, a fellow merrow and family friend. Jace tries to take Lena. Soren secures her. Asger and Jace engage in combat. Asger kills Jace, but not before he strikes him against the front of his chest. Asger dies from his deep wound. Fosse Sofolk begin to kill the seaman. Lena again contemplates how many people suffered to protect her. She is pained with guilt. Lena still believes that the only way to resolve the matter and secure her merrow father is to eventually return to the seas, forever. Soren tells her that it is time for them to leave. Though she has grown in her understanding of the world and men, she is momentarily sympathetic to Lord Jarl who now lays with a spear lodged in his body and his life slowly slipping away. Soren tries to convince her to leave him and that for their own sakes they needed to leave the ship, especially now that it has been struck. Lena attempts to save Lord Jarl, only for him to snatch the shell from around her neck. It falls into the sea. Soren and Lena leave the ship. As it becomes wrecked, Lena transforms again into a merrow. She convinces Soren to go ashore to save himself from the freezing waters. The old merrow reappears from the depths of the seas and returns the shell to Lena. Two secrets are revealed. Soren has now met his mother. He also learns that Lena was willing to sacrifice herself for the man she loves. This was also the only way she could destroy the magisk skal. However, Soren's mother explains that the queen's shell was truly hers now and so was the power contained within it. The old merrow returns to the seas. Lena and Soren confess their love for one another again before she returns to the seas to see about her father. This is the least she could do after Javelin, Asger and Jace have all died. She is relieved to find that her father is safe and has new company. Though in her transformed state she feels comfort in familial surroundings, it is here where she received closure. She contemplates those whom she was closest to were all gone. Javelin and Asger were her memories, a part of her past. Her father did not need for her to care for him. He moved on with his life and encourages her to be where she belongs—with Soren above the surface. Here is where the words that Soren spoke to Lena become manifest in her own realization: “Your father would wish nothing but your happiness too, Lena. Even here. A father’s love…it is much greater than his own selfishness. There is no doubt in my mind that he thinks of you often but knows…trusts that you are where you belong.” This is where Lena understands what humans know about the special relationship between father and daughter. Lena abandons the magisk skal, the object of so much attention in a place below the sea where she believes it will never be found.

Not only does she leave the shell behind, but also her past, including what once was her family. Soren stands at the shores of the cottage and sees her return to him. Just as much as she has experienced his world, Soren wants to experience hers—at least once. He uses his mother broken shell and becomes merrow briefly. As Lena and Soren stand with one another in their human shores they confess their love for one another. It is just them, the waves and the cottage. Soren proposes to Lena, and she accepts.

Beyond the Shores and the Shadows is book two of the Between the Sea and Stars duology. Although one-third of the book repeats a line concerning Lena's feelings of 'sending shivers down her spine' and repeated memories of her brother's death, the pace accelerates. Throughout the story, the author demonstrates Soren's genuine affection for Lena as he continues to be patient, both with her and their unusual circumstances. The author engages the reader's emotions where you are hopeful, but not yet convince that Soren and Lena will have the life they deserve—together. Lena wonders whether the man whom she truly loves will be the one who will reject her. It seems as though the magic and power did not actually lie within the magisk skal, but in the power of love shared between Lena and Soren.

Mermaids. Pirates. An adorable book shop owner. Screaming ‘JUST KISS ALREADY!’

It was delightful to come back to Lena’s world! The best way I can describe this story is a quiet fantasy. It’s very much character driven, but man, when shit hit the fan, it hit!

Lena
Lena learns so much about herself and the worlds around her in this series. When we pick up with her here she’s terrified of men and has no idea who to trust. This is such a reflection of women’s feelings in the real world. I felt Lena’s fear. She then works through these feelings and has to discover who the good ones are. She discovers she has the room to make her own choices and decide what kind of life she wants to live. Something she was never offered before.

Soren
Where can I find a Soren of my own? Please and thank you. Soren is everything you’d want a man to be. Caring, determined to do anything for you, and knows that tea can make any situation better. Soren was determined to learn the truth about merrows and after we learn the truth, like yes, he is the perfect guy for Lena.

The love square in this was so interesting. I don’t think I’ve read something where you really didn’t know who she was gonna end up with for the longest time. Soren, Jace, and Asger all represent different sides of men and I loved that that was explored. Though I did audibly say the words ‘F**k off, Jace’ while reading.

“It’s easier for most to follow blindly rather than to take a moment to lead”
The villains and antagonists in this series are the most scary because they’re the most realistic. The villagers and Jace are so easily influenced by Lord Jarl that they don’t even stop to think about things themselves. If it’s different to them it must be wrong. And that’s so terrifying to think that that’s the way so many people in our world also think.

I spent the whole book thinking ‘I just want them to be happy and live a quiet life by the sea!’ And I usually hate quiet endings like that, so the fact that Chantal had me rooting for them like that was amazing.

Random thoughts I had while reading:
- “Would you like some tea” Yep! He’s a keeper!
- Soren AND Asger both called Jace ‘boy’ Ha! That’s right, sit down, boy. The men are speaking.
- I really want purple eyes
- Pirates!
- “Lena didn’t like the taste of ale” same
- I’ll never let go Jack
- They’re f**king adorable

Thank You Chantal for the review copy!

Book 2 begins where book one left off, with Lena on the run from Lord Jarl. Lena is a merrow who found a magic shell that allowed her to become human, but at great cost. Lord Jarl wants this shell, as it has the power to control the sea, and he is the former lover of the Queen of the merrows. Lena has lost one friend to the influence of Lord Jarl's money and another to murder. Now, she seeks refuge with Soren Emil, the bookshop owner (who Lena knows will protect her, as his mother was a merrow). Together, they must escape Lord Jarl and find a way to destroy the magiske skal (the shell).

This novel is a journey story, both literally and figuratively. Lena must travel away from the only home she knows, along an unknown and possibly dangerous road. She must trust Soren with her life, her story, and her heart. She must also journey to find her own strength and courage in the face of deception and impossible odds. The hardest journey though, is learning to forgive herself for the loss of her brother and other friends close to her. Her decisions lead to certain things, but they were not hers alone.

Some of the story I found to be repetitive, especially Lena's continuous berating of herself. As well, her character became very frustrating at certain points within the novel. In the first book, I found Lena to be strong and more confident with herself, but in the second everything seemed to be about her needing to be saved. She refused to learn from her mistakes, heading continuously into worse danger. I was also hoping for more in terms of the Fosse-Søfolk and the merrows.

However, I liked Lena's growth otherwise and her ability to see the difference between being good and evil. That to sink to Jarl's level meant they were no different. She also never gave up on her father, on her need to see him cared for and to know what happened to her brother and her. Novels often say that the hero must be willing to sacrifice themselves, but Lena refused to sacrifice anyone. She believed there was a better way, a more humane solution. Lena always lead with her heart.

This duology was such a different take on The Little Mermaid story, with lots of in depth world building and character growth. Also, Soren and Lena were adorable together.

This review was originally posted on Star Crossed Reviews I received this book for free from the Author in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review. Thank you to Chantal for my copy of this book. I really enjoyed the first book in this series so when I was offered book 2 as an ARC I knew I had to see how Lena's story ended.

I found it really difficult to get into this book because I read the first book 3 and a half years ago and I couldn't really remember it. The book picks up immediately after the first and it throws you right into the action. I did go back and read the last chapter of the previous book again to try to refresh myself but ideally I would have liked to have read the whole book again.

Lena was a much stronger character in this book than in the first. She has had to grow up and be less naive than she was to begin with. I was so pleased to see her stand up for herself on more than one occasion.

There was a lot of romance in this book which I was a big fan of. It wasn't one of those insta loves but more of a slow burn. I really enjoyed seeing these two characters show how they felt about each other.

There were a few times when I felt like Lena was repeating herself which is why this is a 4 star book for me. I loved the story and the addition of pirates was excellent. what's a story about the sea and mermaids without a few meddling pirates!

This is a great fantasy story that will take you on an adventure both above and below the sea.

Beyond the Shore and Shadows is the sequel to the first book, Between the Sea and Stars by Chantal Gadoury.

The sequel sets right off after the events in the first book. Lena, a merrow (with human feet) living with humans, seeks shelter in Bror Boghandel, a shop owned by Soren Emil. She possesses a magical shell called Magiske Skal, and she must destroy it before it ends up in the hands of the evil Lord Jarl and his possessed apprentice, Jace. Both Lena and Soren journey to the sea, and there Lena learned that to destroy the shell she needs to sacrifice something.

This is my first time that I read a Little Mermaid retelling. I like how our lead character, Lena grew into a mature person (erm, merrow). The atmosphere reminds me of the old fantasy movie, THE CRAFT (minus the witches). It is full of darkness, and the allure of magic is present at every turn of the page. I love the chemistry between Lena and Soren! Chantal brought out the dark yet enchanting fairytale of this story.

If you are looking for a good Little Mermaid retelling, then I highly recommend this series full of dark fantasies and magic.

A great ending!! This duology series is so much more than A Little Mermaid retelling. The depth of character creation and relatability of Lena is so strong. In life you sometimes have to make hard decisions. As long as you learn from the decisions you make and deal with the outcome you have growth. The beautiful descriptions and story building just make this tale more engaging and whimsical. This book focuses on the consequences from the first book and wraps up nicely in a beautiful ending. It kept me on the edge of my seat and reading into the early morning hours to know what happens with Lena! Will it be land or sea? Who will be by her side, if anyone?! I highly recommend this series and can’t wait to read more works by Chantal Gadoury! 🌊 I voluntarily reviewed this after receiving a free copy.

🐚 REVIEW 🐚
I was one of the lucky ones to receive an early e-arc of @chantalgadouryauthor 's sequel to her duology 'Lena'.

Lena is a young merrow living with her brother and father in the Skagerrak Sea (the sea between Denmark and Norway). She is content with her life, but she feels a pull toward the surface, which is forbidden to explore. One day, her brother and Lena break the rules and they break the surface of the sea.
Lena's life is turned upside down.

Oh, how I absolutely loved this book! It's going to have a special place in my book heart, as you don't often read stories set in Scandinavia and the author even used a few danish words. I don't often read books about mermaids and such, but 'Beyond the shore and shadows' definitely peaked my interest to read more books in this setting.
I really liked how Lena developed from a teenage girl to a young woman and her ability to live with the mistakes she made. It was a very beautiful story, filled with action, romance and self-development.
I highly recommend this book, you'll fly through the first one and this one as well.
I gave it ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐/⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ stars.

If you're interested, the first installment in this duology is called 'Between the sea and stars'.

The release date for 'Beyond the shore and shadows' is May 11th.

"The heart wants what it wants. Unfortunately, the heart isn't always mindful of the consequences of what it desires."

Beyond the Shore and Shadows...the long-awaited sequel to Between the Sea and Stars—did not disappoint. Following Lena and Soren on their trying adventures through this sequel is not to be missed. Filled to the brim with beautiful imagery, love, loss, personal growth, and some in-the-moment suspense, Gadoury has created a magnificent conclusion to The Lena Series that you won’t ever forget.

I couldn't put it down once I started; there were moments where I laughed, there were moments that I cried. I never wanted it to end. In this finale, you will be fully immersed in the sea with the merrows, feel yourself in the small walls of the long-forgotten cottage, and travel the waters with pirates in Beyond the Shore and Shadows.

DNF. Truthfully this may have more to do with personal events than the book, but I was unable to finish in time for a proper review. I intend to come back to this soon, however, to complete it entirely as I do find the story interesting.

I enjoy this retelling of the little mermaid and Chantal’s attention to detail. Something I was torn between in what I was able to read was the constant mention back to events in the first book. At first this tactic is helpful for someone as myself who may have forgotten the events that took place. However, after a certain point it becomes redundant and hard to stay focused on the current story points.

Beyond The Shore And Shadows by Chantal Gadoury is the second book in the Lena series. It keeps up right where book one ended. Lena has to flee from Lord Jarl and finds refuge at the Bror Boghandel. But this evil man has his ways.. He's able to turn the villagers against Lena and Soren so they have to run away. Will they escape Lord Jarl or will he get them and the Magiske Skal?

Beyond The Shore And Shadows is a fantastic sequel! It's super suspenseful and has the right mix of adventure, drama and romance! After reading Between The Sea And Stars I couldn't wait to continue the series and I wasn't disappointed! I absolutely love Lena and Soren and I was sooo happy to get to know them better and see their relationship grow. Reading this series just makes me happy!

One of the best mermaid books I have read. It's been a long wait for the conclusion of Lena's story but it was so worth the wait. I'm so in love with the character Soren! I keep saying I can't have anymore book boyfriends, but Soren exists so can't keep that promise.
The journey and struggle Lena and Soren go thru to try and reach their destiny will pull at your heart and keep you glued to this book till the very end.
While I'm see to see it end I'm so satisfied with this ending. This is one of my favorite series featuring mermaids, definitely one of the best I've read.

From start to finish this series was incredible !!
Can't wait for Chantal's next series

Im always in the mood of reading more mermaid stories.
This a nice story, Lena is a great character, likeable and strong; the romance was sweet, the villains are realistic and the plot so entertaining.
This is the sequel of Between the Sea and Stars, and you really need to read the first book, the story stars just where the first ended.
Lena is in danger and she needs to escape, merrows and humans are looking for her, Soren is her ally, together they will flee they will seek help, they meet pirates! (pirates and mermaids are the best combination.)
Gadoury writes charming stories, if you like fairytales, this is a must.

Book 2 was full of Lena's consequences of the choices she's made. I loved how her inner monologue was just so real and relatable. Chantal's writing style stayed true and the story was incredibly engaging. I don't want to say too much so I can avoid spoilers, but let's just say the ending was PERFECT. Everything came together and the duology together just has this perfect sense of flow and conflict/resolution. I definitely recommend this series to ANY mermaid fans out there!!! Coming May 11th this year!!!!

I’ve loved coming back to this story and finding out how the story of Lena and Soren was going to unfold.
Beyond the Shore and Shadows begins exactly where we have left In Between the Sea and Stars, when Lena finds refuge with Soren at the Bror Boghandel. As I’ve shared in my review from book 1, this is a story that speaks to the senses, as Lena experiences more and more of the human world (the light, the colors, the scents, the textures, the tastes).
It’s so enjoyable to watch the relationship of Lena and Soren blooming, despite the dark intentions of Jace and Lord Jarl always looming in.
They go through a series of trials, as they fight to escape those who want to capture the Magiske skal. These trials allow Lena to face her worst fears and sorrows. There’s Love and Loss.
Lena returns to the sea to meet her father and make peace with all that happened since the day she dared going to the surface. She also realized that her father wanted her to be happy on the shore with Soren. So I had my happy ending.
There were two things in particular that I’ve loved about the book: the presence of the Norse culture and language and the way that the story of Lena and Soren was a full circle: she was a daughter of a human mother and a merrow father; he was the son of merrow mother and a human father. They belonged into both worlds: Land and Sea... and for that were perfect for each other!
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

This was such a good sequel. I loved how much Lena grew in this story as character. She was more confident and it was really nice to see that change in her. She still irked me with her decision making skills and her constant negative thoughts but then again I would probably be the same in her position. I also loved the relationship with Sorin and how it grew. Overall I’m very pleased with how this series ended.

This was a great sequel! This storyline is so interesting and the characters are well developed. I do think that the writing feels a little clumsy in places, which is why this gets a 4 star instead of a 5, but it doesn't take away from the story too much, so I would still recommend.

Thank you Chantal!

Beautiful book, enjoy every part of it. It kept me at the seat of my place. The writing is phenomenal, the way Chantal writers in such a way that keep you occupied for days on end pondering what will happen in the next page.

Was never bored with reading it, loved the lore, the description of the scenes but what I loved the most were the characters and names.

Great set of characters, the scene were Lena told Asger she wanted him to be free of her. And he replied with Free from loving her. That scene hit the hardest for me personally and was one of my favourites in the book. Thank you for writing such a beautiful tale and cant wait for the next book you realise.
