Syekh Abdul Qadir al-Jilani dilahirkan pada tahun 470 Hijriah (1077-78 Masehi) di daerah yang bernama Al-Jil di Parsi (sekarang Iran). Beliau berpulang ke Rahmatullah pada tahun 561 Hijriah (1166 Masehi) pada saat berusia 91 tahun. Sufi besar ini disemayamkan di kawasan Madrasah Bab ad-Daraja di Bagdad. Makam ini menjadi tempat yang paling populer dikunjungi oleh para Sufi dan umat Islam dari seluruh penjuru dunia.

لا عجب أن يكون هذا الكتاب له شأن ومكانة عظيمة لدى علماء المسلمين وخصوصًا السادة الصوفية، فهو من تأليف إمام من أئمة الصوفية الأكابر الأولياء العارفين بالله، وهو سيدي سلطان الأولياء والعارفين محيي الدين عبد القادر الجيلاني قَدَّسَ الله سره. وجاء نهج الكتاب مماثل لكتاب إحياء العلوم الدين للإمام حجة الإسلام أبي حامد الغزَّالي الطوسي، ويختلفان في الفقه، فالإحياء على المذهب الشافعي، والغُنيّة على المذهب الحنبلي. وأنصح بطبعة (دار الخير) فهي طبعة جيدة وموافقة للنسخة الأصلية التي تعتمد عقيدة السادة فضلاء الحنابلة، وبعيدة عن تحريف فِرقَة السلفية الوهابية.
