Just about all teens are dealing with some type of anxiety. This book breaks down all the different types of anxiety and how to deal with it. In my opinion this is a must read for every teen and their parents. It's so important to let your teen know that they are not the only one feeling like they do and if they feel they need help not to be ashamed to ask. Thank you Callisto Media via NetGalley for the ARC copy of this book. All opinions expressed are my own.
Portions of this workbook are useful, but it's very CBT-based which can be outright harmful for many folks. Luckily it was free as part of kindle unlimited.
As an example of being a poor application of CBT is a vignette in which a teen is worried about catching a contagious illness, "whatever is going around." It gaslights this as not a serious concern and walks someone through a CBT technique to question and doubt your thoughts. Obviously many people are now becoming more aware of the risks of contagious illness and this concern isn't something to be invalidated via thought replacement exercises.
One useful portion is a description of different types of breathing (e.g. normal relaxed breathing, breathing when you exercise, breathing during a panic attack) and some concrete suggestions for when and how to use breathing exercises to help anxiety.
If you have kindle unlimited and have an interest in the subject for professional or personal reasons, it might worth downloading and scanning through with an eye for really picking out only what you think would work for you/your teenager/s. Just go in with the knowledge that sometimes it might be suggesting you do something that could be harmful for some people in some situations. If you're not sure how to pick out the problematic parts, reading criticisms of cognitive behavioral therapy will help.
Do you have a teenager who is having panic attacks and/or experiencing anxiety or fears? This is the workbook that could truly change his/her life. Dr. Chansard is a licensed psychologist with years of experience working with children and adolescents who are struggling with anxiety. This workbook is the product of years of her experience and is a must-read for the anxious teen. Some of the highlighted sections include strategies similar to CBT or Cognitive Behavior Therapy strategies, these strategies include ways to calm your anxious mind/thoughts and your anxious body. Reading her workbook is like having a trusted friend talk to you. Chansard outlines helpful activities/tools and includes a question-and-answer section with real-life teen anxiety stories.
As a parent who has experienced anxiety throughout my own life and now has preteens at home, I found this workbook to be exactly what I was looking for, and hope it will help my own children when they start experiencing normal teen anxiety. I now feel that I have a great resource for them to read and for me to use when anxiety comes up. This book could be helpful for every teen, not just the highly anxious ones. Intelligently written, relatable, and empathetic, this book checks off all the boxes to make it a useful tool to deal with teen anxiety.
Perfect for the overworked and stressed teen, this workbook can help alleviate stress and anxiety. I will say, even though this book has a nice layout, great illustrations, wonderful prompts and more; it IS very wordy and can be a little off-putting at first. Some teens might be intimidated first looking at this book. That being said, once they get started, each exercise will start to get easier and easier, they just actually have to get over the first hump and start this workbook. Within the pages are four sections: the truth about anxiety, calming your anxious mind, calming your anxious body, and putting your tools to work. The calming sections contain 31 exercises between them and they can be done at whatever pace the teen is feeling, once a day, once a week, etc. This workbook is meant to be parceled out and not necessarily devoured all at once. The device is sound and the prompts are very thought provoking. Teens may not exactly buy this kind of book for themselves but it would be a wonderful gift from parents, mentors, or teachers.
With a teenager who has anxiety I am always looking for some way to help him find way to deal with the anxiety.
This book and workbook gives a great guide for parents as well as teens to help find away to deal with not only being a teenage but with the anxiety they face in the world today. This book can help with more than just teenagers but the examples are mainly to focus on teen saturation.
The author area about Phobias are great and helps kids understand the difference between what is normal and what might be more than normal and to talk with parents.
This workbook is less homework from therapist and more a journal who understands what is happening in a teens head.
