Could Be Something Good

A classy, sophisticated woman who can quote The Hulk? Now that's worth fighting for...

Daniel Durand just met his soulmate. Never mind that she's his attending physician's daughter and she's a few years older than him. The hot blonde midwife just gave him the cold shoulder at the elevators at Santiam Hospital, but he never did give up easy. There's too much at stake: women who understand his comic book quotes don't come along every day. After bonding over early-morning Mexican food, can he convince her that he's just the arm candy she needs for that wedding she's dreading...and show her he can be what she needs after all?

Winnie Baker isn’t taking her cousin to another wedding. And she's not going by herself, not with her ex-boyfriend blowing up her phone with texts, asking to be her date. But the pickings are a bit slim in Timber Falls, a sleepy Oregon town in the foothills of the Cascades. She moved here to focus on building her midwifery practice, not get involved with millennial boys with trendy shoes and witty comebacks for days. When her mother’s constant scrutiny leads Winnie to make a rash bet, can their fledgling relationship take the heat of the whole town’s attention?

Start the book Publishers Weekly called “small-town romance done right.”

Could Be Something Good is the first book in the Timber Falls sweet romantic comedy series. It contains mild cursing, a make-out scene involving melted butter and stolen moments in medical supply closets, but no open door sex scenes. Picked this on a whim when I saw it on KU and it was a great decision. It has a very sweet older woman-younger man romance. The hero is adorable and 100% so into the heroine. I also really loved the secondary cast and look forward to reading their books!

Thanks so much to NetGalley for providing me with an eARC of this book for an honest review. As always, all opinions are my own.

This book follows Winnie, a thirty-one-year-old midwife and Daniel, a twenty-something resident, both working at a rural hospital. For Daniel, meeting Winnie is love at first sight. For Winnie, however, the feeling is not mutual. At least, not really. But when Winnie needs a date to her mentor's wedding, she decides to bite the bullet and invite Daniel, mostly in an effort to stave off her ex who will be there. As feelings begin to develop, Winnie and Daniel have to deal with Winnie's overprotective mother who seems to think Daniel isn't ready to settle down. They have to decide whether they will make it work, or prove her mother right.

So on the surface, this book sounds really interesting. I'm always down for a romance and I love a good medical/hospital setting, however, there was a lot about the execution of this book that just didn't work for me. Daniel was all in from day one and Winnie took longer to come around but I felt like there was very little chemistry beyond Daniel's attraction developed between the two characters. There was no real sense of time but they were jumping into the "I love yous" pretty quickly for the minimal development we got.

The writing itself wasn't terrible but I had a hard time following the story. There were a lot of subplots going on and setting up things for sequels but I just couldn't seem to grasp the main storyline. Because of this, it felt a little bit like there wasn't a lot of direction for the story and where the characters were going. And don't even get me started on the ending - I had a hard enough time getting on board with what I thought was the beginnings of their relationship.

Overall, I'm sure this book will appeal to many readers, however, I don't think I was one of those.

Dr. Daniel Durand was currently doing his residency in Timber Falls Hospital. He came from a family of doctors and he was the third one to finish. His father was the first Durand, then his younger brother Kyle, then him. Their older brother Philip was also into the medical field but he was a Physical Therapist.

Daniel met Winnie at their “first brush off” and he immediately liked her. Winnie Baker is the daughter of Daniel’s attending physician—the physician he didn’t really see eye to eye. Their story started because of a wedding that Winnie had to go through with a date and things spiraled from there.

I love this book. It was such a fun read because of the banters, the references, and the medical metaphors that were used between the two main characters. I love how it wasn’t dragging and that every chapter something significant to the story happens. It was a fast read for me because the story got me really hooked and i just wanted to keep reading and finish it immediately.

Highly recommended for readers who are into romance, banters, small-town romance, and family love. Also, i was lucky enough to read the epilogue that the author sent and it was the perfect ending for this book! I’m looking forward to Kyle and Ainsley’s story (book 2)! 🤎

**I want to thank Netgalley for giving me this ARC in exchange for an honest review**

This book is about Winnie and Daniel.
Winnie works as a nurse/midwife in the same hospital as Daniel, who is a doctor. This book is about love at first sight, age gap, dyslexia and being accepted for the choices you make.

I won't give spoilers, but i liked the chemistry between the main characters. I just wish that the depth of their feelings for each other was explored more. The author has done a great job with writing about the mother and daughter dynamic in this book. It something that many people have to go through. Acceptance is something we all crave. That being said this book is not perfect, but it was good. I give this book 3 stars.

Pretty cute rom com type novel that I picked up as a Kindle freebie. The girl was older than the guy which provided some new and interesting dynamics. I don't normally care for hospital settings but it actually worked really well here. Cute couple, the male lead in particular impressed me.
Dropped a star because part of the "tension" keeping the couple apart is a bet that they won't have sex for 8 weeks. And all I can say is that if they couldn't last 2 months immediately after they started dating, their relationship would have been doomed anyway.
Despite the bet, clean read which I also appreciated.

Disclaimer: Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for an eARC copy to review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

I really enjoyed this book. The writing style was easy to follow along with and the characters were interesting. This was a quick read for me, I loved watching Daniel try to get the girl. Winnie was a very strong heroine who was a tough cookie to crack. I do feel like the beginning of the story was a bit too slow for me but towards the middle the story it definitely picked up it's pace. Daniel and Winnie were so cute together, it was really refreshing to read about the heroine being older than the hero. I feel like most romance books don't have that trope so it was really interesting to read about. I liked watching the main characters interact with their family. Winnie’s relationship with her grandfather was adorable. I liked how the characters bonded over superheroes, I thought that was really sweet. I also liked that Daniel was dyslexia because it was nice to see the disability representation. I wish that we had gotten more depth on the characters, I feel like we barely got to know them which hindered my enjoyment of the book. I also didn't like that Winnie’s mother was so controlling and that the town seemed so invested in Daniel and Winnies Love life. Although her mother’s character does improve in the end I feel like that character development was too fast and it was a little bit unbelievable. Overall, I enjoyed this book and I can't wait for the next book in this series. I would definitely recommend this to someone who is looking for a light funny contemporary romance.

4.5/5 stars!
I was given an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Once again, I’m reading a genre that is very unlike me! I never read adult romance novels, usually because I have trouble finding clean ones, but I couldn’t resist the cute cover! It’s much better than the covers that most adult romances have. I was pleasantly surprised by how much I loved this book! The best part is that it was the first in a series of romance books that all take place in the same small town so I’m looking forward to seeing some of the other characters get their love stories later!
Dr. Daniel Durand is currently working at the hospital in the small town of Timber Falls. One day, he runs into a midwife/nurse named Winifred Baker who also happens to be the daughter of his supervisor. Immediately, he begins his efforts to win her over, usually involving comic books or superheroes. Meanwhile, Winifred has got a lot on her mind and she doesn’t really need the added attention of this young doctor to distract her. It becomes quite clear that she is unable to ignore him. However, she is several years older than him which bothers her. When she needs a date to a good friend’s wedding, a wedding that her very cringey and obnoxious ex will be attending, she’s forced to find someone in the small town who will go with her.
I absolutely loved this book! The main characters, as well as the side characters, were all so cute and fun to read about! Besides the very adorable romance, the family relationships as well as friendships were also a huge part of the story and I really enjoyed it! Daniel is such a sweetheart and all the dorky superhero references were cute! Winifred can be slightly upsetting at times, but she is under a lot of stress so I don’t fault her for it. Her ex is obnoxious; I think he’s the worst character in the entire book. In the end, not only the romance was great, but all the relationships, struggles, and interactions were truly well done! I’m very excited for the next book (with some characters I already liked in the first book!) I would definitely recommend this book to romance fans, but it is somewhat of an insta love so be prepared for that.

Love gives no cares to age.

Small towns have a way of taking your heart, even when Winnie did not come to Timber Falls for anything but focusing on work. A midwife with a doctor for a mother as well, the last thing she needs is to fall for the younger doctor in her hospital.

Winnie and Daniel were a cute fun couple of characters and I really liked who they were as individuals and how they came together as a couple throughout the story. I thought West did a great job setting up all the characters for future books in the series as well, I'll definitely be reading more of them in the future!

Highly recommend for any light hearted romance lovers, and looking forward to Kyle & Ainsley's story next! Loved that it was perfectly relatable and mushy, with no steamy sex scenes and still had a great story!

I just have to mention the cover artwork too - the subtle nod to graphic novels that play a part in this title was one of the things I loved most about Winnie & Daniel's story.

Solid four stars from me, thank you to Netgalley and Tempest & Kite Publishing LLC for allowing me to read an advance reader copy of this title in exchange for my personal review!

PROS:
Small town romance between a doctor and a doula/midwife. Younger man/older woman. Lovable side characters, I cared enough to check out their books.

CONS:
I love cheesy romance but the hero was on the cringy side, I don't blame the heroine if she didn't find him attractive at all. Lots of fillers, to a point that this feels like it crammed a lot of things in one story and I wasn't a fan of the number of filler characters introduced to make you feel like you're in a small town where everyone knows everyone else but they didn't really contribute to the story outside of that. It was okay the first few times but there were just too many of them.

I can see other how other people can enjoy this but it's not for me. I will check out the other books in the series though.

I honestly just picked it up because I knew there was dyslexia rep and because it was on kindle unlimited.

The plot is way too fast paced and skips a few (important) moments, which makes it so that we don't actually see the relationship (or their feelings) develop. And since we don't see the relationship actually develop, it feels like nothing really happens throughout the whole story. (Plus, the additions of those couple sub-plots also made everything confusing)

The way the MCs flirt is a little ridiculous and extremely insta-lovey, but it might also just be that maybe it's all just too cishetallo for me.

The mmc is a cinnamon roll, which I always appreciate, despite the cringe and second hand embarrassment that he caused me with the love-at-first-sight thing.

There is a brief moment of fake dating for a wedding but it literally lasts for one chapter and then that plot point is already done. Then the fmc stars a bet with her mother saying that they will go for eight weeks without sex to prove that they're actually in love and that they can last together and, maybe it's the asexual in me, but was that really necessary?

I enjoy age gap romances but the way the characters behave and think about said age difference is the important part. In this book she's older than him (by 7 years I think?) and the way she keeps saying he's too young started to feel icky to me after a while (he's still 24, he's not a child).

I really can't stand when we have those scenes (especially if they’re at the start of the book) where we get introduced to 10 characters all at once. If you think I’ll be able to remember who any of them are you’re incredibly wrong. They’ll all the same person to me now. Even at the end of the book I still had no idea who any of those were expect for the two MCs, her mother and Kyle.

Content Warnings: medical content, giving birth, death of a parent, toxic relationship.

I'm a little biased because I beta read this book, but if you're looking to de-stress with a feel good romance, small town romance, this is a good one to pick up. One of the things I like most about Fiona's books are that her characters aren't typical romance novel types, and though her romances are "clean", that doesn't mean they don't pack a little bit of heat. If you like romance that colors outside the lines a little bit, then I'd recommend trying any of Fiona's books.

Really cute!

I loved that the author made Daniel dyslexic and gave him the courage to not let it stop him from becoming a doctor. Winnie was intimidated by her mom, and at first, let it box her in. But Daniel brought her out of her shell, and it made her loosen up. Once she stood up to her mother, I think it allowed her mom to loosen up a little too.
I enjoyed this book and would recommend it.

I loved this one. Can you tell I love romance yet. I loved the chemistry and banter between the two main characters. There is a age gap but that didn't matter. I loved the way that Daniel was always trying to get Winnie to got out with him and Winnie is a badass midwife which her mother (who is Daniels boss) disapproves of her career choice. I loved the way that grief is dealt with especially with Winnie's mom. The way that everyone deals with grief in a different way.

It's difficult for me to give feedback on this book without sounding too picky, but I'll try.

I liked this sweet romance a lot. But...there were a few things that gave me pause. First of all, I felt Winifred, the heroine, at 30, acted way older. Maybe that was a purposeful device by the author to make her seem out of date, isolated, and a loner. If it was, it worked.
If she intended to make the dyslexic hero who is a medical resident act like a nerdy teenager, she succeeded.
If she intended this book to be a feel good, forget everything but the love growing between the H/H, once again she succeeded.

This was a quick read for me and the first I've read by this author, whom I know nothing about. There's going to be a book two dealing with the autistic/asperger's brother that looks interesting.

All in all, not a bad read. Thanks Netgalley for a sneak peek. OPinions are my own.

Eu adorei!

"It was love at first brush-off...

Dr. Daniel Durand wanted Winnie Baker the minute he laid eyes on her. Never mind that she's his attending physician's daughter, can't stand him, and she's a few years older than him. Giving up would've been the smart thing to do when the hot blonde midwife gave him the cold shoulder at the elevators his first week of residency at Santiam, but he never did give up easy. After bonding over early-morning Mexican food, can he convince her that he's just the arm candy she needs for that wedding...and get her to consider one of their own?

Winnie Baker isn’t taking her cousin to another wedding. Her mentor's big day is far too important to miss. And she's not going by herself, not with her ex-boyfriend promising to be in attendance and blowing up her phone with texts on a weekly basis, asking for another chance. But the pickings are a bit slim in Timber Falls, a sleepy Oregon town in the foothills of the Cascades. She moved here to focus on building her midwifery practice, not get involved with cute millennial boys with trendy shoes and long eyelashes. And yet, even this small rural hospital is feeling a bit crowded, with her mother and her group of doctors-in-training constantly underfoot...especially since she was supposed to be one of those doctors.

Will an easy-going guy like Daniel still be interested when she spills her secret?

Could Be Something Good is the first book in the Timber Falls romantic comedy series. Okay, this one. Stick a fork in me, I’m done. I might be biased because I live in Oregon and small towns are my jam, but Timber Falls is the place I want to call home. Most of my family works in healthcare, so this love story set in a small town hospital hit all the right notes to knock me into love with it.

I honestly am usually too shy to reach out to authors after finishing their books, but I immediately sent Fiona West an email asking about the hospital. It reminded me so much of the little hospital I grew up in (my mom is a respiratory therapist and often took us to work to play in the rehab gym on the weekends). It turns out I am a dinglehopper who forgot this is a real hospital that exists, but Fiona was very sweet and kind – and got herself added to my “auto buy” list!

Winnie is a midwife trying to build her practice who has the added benefit of having a strongwilled mother…who happens to be a physician in the same hospital. It’s a case of “Mother knows best…..except Mother doesn’t know her child”. I felt this in my soul (sorry, Mom, if you're reading, but we've discussed this...)

I personally have worked in healthcare almost my entire career (minus one ill-fated year in finance) and these interactions make my little heart soar. I adore every single human in this book, even Winnie's mother, and I WANT TO LIVE IN TIMBER FALLS NOW, OKAY THANK YOU.

I might have squealed out loud when I found out who the next books were about.....because I want to demand every single person's story (Fiona, I'm sorry, I am needy!)

Daniel, Daniel, Daniel..... ah, Daniel. You share my heart with your brother (I'm sorry but Kyle will always be my favorite Dr. Durand forever and ever and always. I mean, HE'S KYLE.) Daniel is a heartthrob with a heart of gold, and I love how determined he is without crossing the line into creep. I also truly appreciate how involved he gets with his patients (not romantically, get your minds out of the gutter, he's just a fantastic physician!!) and I want to give this book to every single MD I encounter so they can learn from his bedside manner.

Fiona West, I want to live in your novels. You bring small town Oregon to life and I cannot WAIT to devour the rest of the series!

This clearly got 5 stars. Always. Forever. Team Winnie + Daniel = LUV4EVA.

(well, Team Kyle, but that's a different story for a different time!)

A chaste small town contemporary romance with a strong first half that eventually devolved into the kind of inexplicable shenanigans I normally associate with romcoms; I would not classify this as a romcom. Daniel falls for Winnie the moment he sees her at the hospital where they work but Winnie is less than interested. He’s about a decade older, for one, and seems like a player. But Daniel is persistent and eventually that pays off. They’re both into comics, which was a neat way for them to bond.

Daniel is a medical resident who has chosen a rural medicine placement that happens to be in his hometown. Winnie is a midwife. The depiction of hospital life didn’t ring true for me (I used to be a medical social worker): Daniel calls her Nurse Baker, when no one refers to nurses that way. The nurses always refer to doctors as Dr. X even when they’re not in a patient room; only asshole doctors would require that. (Winnie’s doctor mom was the only one who qualified as that here.) I have other nitpicks but mostly I wanted to see what made this hospital’s rural medicine focus different from other places and that didn't happen. More attention was paid to Winnie’s pregnant patients, which is not my interest. However, it was nice to see a profession rarely depicted in romance.

Winnie’s mom is toxic but the book doesn’t seem to recognize just how inappropriate she is. Her behavior is rationalized as being a loving mother. Um, no. She doesn’t respect her daughter’s profession (until the very end), she’s cold and unfeeling, and she doesn’t seem to really care about Winnie’s wants or needs, only her vision for Winnie’s life. I really needed her to be called out more.

Lastly, I didn’t care for the ending.

Characters: Winnie is a 34 year old white nurse midwife. Daniel is a white medical resident with dyslexia in his mid-20s. This is set in Timber Falls, OR.

Content notes: toxic mother, harassment by FMC’s ex-boyfriend (including showing up at her workplace since she didn’t respond to his messages), secondary character’s husband is a serial cheater, minor bike accident (road rash), MMC has dyslexia and dysgraphia, ableism, ageism, MMC’s brother is autistic, pregnant secondary character and patients, childbirth (patients), childbirth epilogue (FMC), C-section, FMC’s doctor mother is anti-natural childbirth, various patient illnesses, vomit (patient), past death of FMC’s father (heart attack), alcohol, cigar (secondary character), cancer joke and other medical similes, STD stigma, diet culture, ableist language, hyperbolic language around suicide and addiction, mention of past childhood cancer (MMC’s sister), mention of past cancer scare (secondary character

I used to be a romantic at heart, then Life happened and then I was bitter and thought that love and romance didn't really exist and I was not positive towards romance books. Then I decided to read "If I Never Met You" and realized that contemporary romance wasn't the horrible thing it once was. So I decided to read another contemporary romance, saw this available and requested it.

And LOVED it!!!!

I'm not sure if I can list ALL the ways this rang my bells, but I will try. I thought at first this was going to be Ainsley and Kyle's story, as they obviously had a THING, but was surprised it was going to follow his younger brother Daniel and her roommate Winifred. That somewhat disappointed me, but I got over that quickly, as Daniel and "Fred"'s story was so good! I was immersed in the characters, what they were thinking, feeling and the secondary characters were all introduced in a way that made them all feel real and not just cardboard cutouts.

Props to the author for Daniel having dyslexia and his family being so supportive and helping him to reach his goals in becoming a doctor. I haven't read many books where that is something a character has to struggle with.

I also loved how Daniel was YOUNGER than Winifred and how that was something she was struggling with. That felt realistic. I don't know much about the medical field and working in a hospital, but it didn't seem unrealistic to me, so that didn't kick me out of the book.

I may have read this too fast to get much of the setting, but I was able to pick up on the fact that it took place in the Northwest of the US, in what seemed like a small-ish town. That was the vibe that I got at least. Granted, I personally didn't need much in the way of that detail, as I was so wrapped up in the characters and their story.

There is some kissing and you know they get physical, but it's not on-page. So some steam, but not in-your-face. I liked that. I'm still new to the whole romance book thing and didn't want it to go too Fifty Shades too fast.

Seriously, this was the right book at the right time for me and it helped me to realize the first book wasn't a one-off of the genre of contemporary romance for me. I have also read the second book in the series and loved it as well. So this is not a one-hit wonder folks! We have an author with writing chops here and I will be promoting this series at the store to all of our romance readers.

Nothing less than 5 stars for this sweet, funny and heart-felt romance.

*A HUGE thank you for NetGalley/The publisher for providing me with an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review*

I'm fairly new to reading adult romances, and have read around two or three at the most, so I didn't know what to expect going into this book. Honestly, it was so well written, so full of emotions and so relatable, that I couldn't help but love it! ❤️

-----------------------------------------------------------------

WHAT I LOVED-
1. Portrayal of mother-daughter relationship: the relationship between Winnie and her mum was absolutely one of growth and development as the book progressed. It was so wholesome to see them grow and open up to each other! And while we're talking of family I absolutely loved all the positive, lovely, supportive families who were in this book! Props to the author for writing such beautiful characters! ❤️
2. Following one's passion- I absolutely love that our main character Winnie was adamant about following her passion, that is Nursing, rather than bowing down to the pressure and expectations that society and her mum put on her. I LOVE YOU WINNIE BAKER!
3. ALL THE SUPERHERO REFERENCES 😍😍😍- for a geek like myself who has grown up watching Marvel superhero movies, I absolutely adored how many superhero jokes and references adorned this cute book, so thank you for that author!
4. Daniel Durand- A male character who is empathetic, sensitive, understanding, respective of boundaries and also absolutely charming? Mmmmmmm! Marry me Daniel! And all the males in his family too seem like such awesome people! Can't wait to read more of them in the series! ❤️
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Though the pacing took some time to truly get into, I adored this book, in and out! It's warm, funny, adorable and just the right book to make you feel loved and happy and warm all day long!

Final verdict? 4.5 🌟!

Now let me go wish for my own personal Daniel Durand! 😉

Winnie is a midwife and Daniel is a resident. Daniel is attracted to Winnie immediately, but because of their age difference, Winnie resists his advances. Daniel is 24 yrs old, and Winnie is in her 30's. Winnie is abrupt and no-nonsense, whereas Daniel is more of a free spirit with a little bit of rakish reputation. However, once he sets his sights on Winnie, he is 100% devoted to her.

Winnie's mom wants her to be a doctor, but she's happy as a midwife. Winnie's father died at a young age, but Daniel has a large, fun family. Daniel has both dysgraphia and dyslexia, and this comes up a few times in the book. It's never a secret and is always addressed in a respectful way.

Daniel really works hard to win Winnie over. This is a slow burn, with the whole town eventually rooting for them to be together. There is definitely a case of Instant-love on the part of Daniel, but Winnie is very insecure about their age difference.

I loved Daniel. He has a man bun and is super fashion savvy. He was charming and respectful. He was goal driven and tenacious. He was a very caring doctor, and some of the best parts were seeing he and Winnie interacting with patients. Winnie took a lot longer to warm up to. She's hesitant and bristly, and all around less likable, but only because she fights so hard against liking Daniel. However, as she opens up and allows herself to be with Daniel and be honest with her mom, she becomes more relaxed and likable.

The epilogue was so sweet!!!!

We meet quite a few side characters that I look forward to reading books about as well.

This was a very enjoyable read for me! I dove into the book, and I was immediately sucked into the story and the characters’ lives. Timber Falls is such a charming little town, and the characters and world building are really great! The story is fast paced, which I loved, and there was very little language, which I always appreciate! I also appreciated the fact that the romance was clean. I’m now completely invested in this series, and I can’t wait to read book 2!
That being said, there were a few things I didn’t like:
• Kyle, one of the side characters, is autistic, but you can’t really tell. Maybe it’s just that you don’t see enough of him in the book to be able to tell that he is autistic, but I also don’t think it’s very obvious to tell from the way his character is written. He doesn’t seem to show signs of autism, and his autism is mentioned pretty late in the book, 80 pages in. I wish I could’ve seen more evidence of his autism so maybe I could understand his character more.
• This is a romcom so cheesy moments are to be expected. that being said, there were a couple moments where things got a little too cheesy, or dramatic, but not so much that it took away from the book for me.
• The main character girl, Winnie, is a midwife, so the birthing process gets described in detail in one scene towards the end of the book. It was kind of weird for me to read, but that’s probably because it was so detailed and it’s something i’ve never experienced before.

I absolutely loved this book, and I can’t wait to dive into the rest of the series! I highly recommend checking this one out! 🤍

Welcome to Timber Falls in the first of a 6 book series. We start off with not 1, but 2 [seemingly] hot doctors, while the women are in stereotypical “female” rolls (nurse, beautician, teacher, librarian) and the one female doctor is portrayed as a cold, tough character.

This has all makings of a small town romance. We learn how entangled this cast of characters is early on and you can’t help but be excited for the drama to play out. Unfortunately there isn’t much drama in the end. A number of characters are introduced briefly and then dismissed, and I only hope that was done because they’ll show up again in later books in the series.

By 1/3 if the way through I hit that sweet spot in a romance where you’re reading at a breakneck speed because you know what you want to happen and race through pages to see if it does. It does, and that’s usually such a satisfying moment but this one fizzled a bit.

Despite that, I look forward to the next installment (due out later this summer!) because I’m interested to see where it goes when focused on different main characters.

Final gripe: The storyline focuses a moderate amount on the age gap between characters, Winnie feeling like she’s too old for Daniel. I had an issue with this because I find Winnie pretty immature for someone in her 30s. She was still living at home, craved her mother’s approval regarding her education, and couldn’t even bring herself to say “orgasm” as a nurse/midwife in a professional setting, which just made me roll my eyes.

Final love: Rhododendrons. I love when such a good word makes it into a book!

Could Be Something Good...could be something good! I really liked this book, but it wasn't a home run for me. I think because in the first chapter, the set up for Kyle and Ainsley's story was so POTENT, that I almost immediately lost interest in Daniel and Winnie's story. I can't wait for that one to come out because the longing on page is just...A+ level pining and I am a sucker for unrequited love stories.

That said, I liked the older woman/younger man angle used here because it set our handsome doctor back on his heels quite a few times when Winnie asserted herself. What didn't work for me was the "sex bet" plot device being initiated by Winnie's MOM, who is a physician at the hospital where Daniel and Winnie work. I would be absolutely mortified if my mother implied that my love interest was only in it for the nookie and that our relationship wouldn't last 2 months without sex.

I'm also completely petty and would have boned him immediately to prove a point, so there's that as well.

There was a lot of emphasis placed on the approval of Winnie's mother of the relationship, of Winnie's career (apparently being a midwife wasn't good enough), and for such a strong heroine, the fact that she couldn't seem to stand up to her mother fell a little flat for me. I mean, there is something about being around your parents that makes you regress to your most awkward and vulnerable teenage self, but at thirty, I feel like most people wouldn't resort to active self-sabotage to avoid having a medium on the scale of difficulty conversation.

That said, Fiona West has created a world in which I would like to delve deeper, so for a entry point into a new series, overall...could be something good! (Sorry -- couldn't resist!)

"Daniel suddenly knew he had a soul for the first time , and its first order of business was declaring that it had found its mate."

Dr.Daniel Durand has decided that he wants to get serious and find the woman of his dreams, he just didn't think she would be his attendings daughter. It was love at first sight for Daniel, Winnie stole his heart and then went on to blow him off, this however didn't stop Daniel. With the help of his older brother and dad, Daniel continues to pursue Winnie and prove that he is serious about his feelings for her.

••

Winnie is living her dream helping mothers bring life into the world as a midwife, it would all be perfect if only her mother would stop insisting she become a doctor. Winnie is so determined not to follow in her mothers footsteps so much so that she has failed her MCATs twice on purpose. Her only problem being she doesn't know how to tell her mum she doesn't want to become a MD.

••

Not only does Winnie have to deal with her mothers constant nagging but she needs a date to the wedding of her college professor, where her ex will also be in attendance. When Daniel hears that Winnie needs a date he all but jumps at the chance to accompany her. The two grow closer after the wedding so much so that her mother takes notice, once again she does not approve saying Winnie is a passing fad for Daniel. Finally finding her voice Winnie stands up to her mother, which leads to a bet between mother and daughter, that Daniel won't last 8 weeks. Now not only does Daniel have to prove himself to Winnie but her mother and the entire town.

••

"You’re in love with her. Crazy. He just thought she was classy and gorgeous and brave and intelligent and wanted to make her laugh and take her to bed and give her presents that made her eyes light up and die for her if necessary."

I loved this book, Winnie and Daniel were beyond cute and so easy to love. This was a cute romance that had me rooting for Daniel from the very beginning. I loved how connected to his patients he was and that they were more that sick people to him. As for Winnie, I felt so sad for her that her mother kept pushing her into something she didn't want when it was clear she loved being a midwife.

••

West has done a brilliant job with this romance, I can not wait for Kyle and Ainsley's story. I have to say I loved the cover of this book, it is so cute and depicts both characters well. I highly recommend this novel.
