"Bride for the Sake of Duty" is a historical romance novel of approximately 80,000 words. No cheating, no cliffhangers, and a guaranteed happily ever after.
Bridget Barton was born and raised in Fort Worth, Texas.
She has studied English Literature in college and after a brief passage in journalism as a newspaper writer, she stirred her career to what she always loved: becoming an author!
She has always been intrigued by rascals, vagabonds, dukes and rogues, so having the chance to write stories about them is a wish come true for her!
Bridget is married to her own prince charming and is the proud mother of two daughters (and three adorable kittens) and soon to be a grandma!
She is a hopeless romantic who devours romance literature and of course enjoys writing love stories of her own.
When she is not writing, Bridget is relaxing by cooking for her lovely husband, exercising and listening to soft music.
I have no empathy for a husband who abandons his wife only days after they marry and scurries off to find his "adventure". And have little to no sympathy for him once he returns to him struggling to find his way back to his wife...a wife he has neglected for 2 full years. A wife who has had to negotiate her own way, stumbling and fumbling all on her own, to not just find her ways in the household she needs to run but also in society when the husband has just...left. So, yeah, I'm already at guns blazin' when the male MC shows his face because...man, oh, man...
Eleanor's father holds Miles Fitzroy's father in high regards so when these children are of age, their fathers mastermind and matchmake to put their two offspring in marriage to tie them together forever. Actually it is Eleanor's father who holds Miles's father in deep regard as he is the only one still living, so he finagles them the rest of the way. Eleanor & Miles are close in age, Miles being slightly older, by a year or two, but when they saw each other as children, Miles was reed-thin and gangling, not very memorable. He is not that much different as a younger man in his teens to early 20s, but when he marries Eleanor it is in no way a love match for either. Eleanor is pretty much following her dear father's wishes because he loved Miles's father so much...and Miles...well, you never truly get to know Miles all that well, even by the end. We got to know his friendly India companion, Ajit, better.
When Miles does return, he is bringing an Indian companion with him, named Ajit. Ajit is often used to curb Miles, make him more "human" and show "feelings" and give him a smack upside the head. Not only has two years made Eleanor a beautiful, appealing wife...but Miles has grown into his body, he is handsome and physically fitter. And it's weird how they simply go with the flow after years apart. It is told to us by Eleanor's own words that she used to be very much like Miles...being a hoyden, bluestocking, having a huge sense of adventure, too...yet when it came time to marry, they tamed her wild beast inside...so now that she is a biddable wife...Miles is turned off by it, in some manner.
I knew, right from the minute jump, in the future to their HEA, Miles's importance would change their life...to where they would travel together to revisit India...and possibly live there and then also come back to his family estate, which she ran really well while he was absent. I really hated to see it happen, because Eleanor is once again forced to conform while Miles just squanders off and does his business overseas. The odd thing was, Eleanor is so tamed she even fears sailing on huge ships and will get seasick, but of course, it's curtailed and she eases back into it, because...we must do that since she is a wife and he is her husband...so she must do what he loves and bully on what she wants to do.
I wanted it to feel like a natural progression but the writing in the story rushed it...like Miles got "called back" to his business in India and he needed to go NOW...and he needed her to answer TODAY if she would leave with him or stay in England. I don't know why but I really would've liked it if Miles had gone once again...and while he was gone, he felt he missed Eleanor and then tried his best to rush back to her. There were moments of Miles asking "Tell me to stay and I will", but for some odd reason, I never felt it was genuine. Yeah they slowly learned about one another...slowly fell in love...but man, again, it is Eleanor who is giving up a life she tamed herself for to go back to an adventurous world she once dearly coveted, but now fears. And the Author gives us an extended Epilogue [found thru a link at the end of the book, off her website]...and it showed Miles & Eleanor don't have it easy but I can only guess...thanks for only telling and not showing...
All the while of Miles & Eleanor rekindling their relationship or even beginning a marriage together...Ajit has a secondary romance with a compromised best friend of Eleanor's, Kitty [Katherine]. This is where the story gets very interesting, and not because of the budding romance between Ajit and Kitty, but the way Eleanor takes Kitty under her wing, as an all-knowing older best friend...and wow, the life struggles and lessons Eleanor goes thru are truly awesome and astounding. Kitty had a fiance...who took her to bed and she got pregnant. But eh, come to find out, he has A LOT of engagements with females and he evens sleeps and dates many more. He is really trying to get some kind of monetary settlement or whatnot from Kitty's family or who Kitty might be friends with...like Eleanor. Eleanor has this belief she and Miles MUST FIND Kitty's father's baby and get them together...because Eleanor has faith that a baby must be with its true parents...and Kitty must keep her promise of engagement. But it will take Miles...and Kitty to make Eleanor see she is quite singular in her beliefs...because she has never factored in the fact that Kitty's fiance could possibly be a swindler of the lowest rungs...and that he will do more harm and hurt Kitty.
This was the more interesting of Eleanor's storylines as she also had the one with her husband, Miles. I found Eleanor's slight maturation during this more relatable than anything between her and Miles. Especially since I had some misgivings about Miles's instant NEED to rush off to India and thereby needing to force Eleanor's hand to make a choice, "If you say you love me, come with me now or stay"...and once she has shown us she is still on the fence but leaning more towards not ever being without Miles...yeah, despite her large misgivings about traveling and living in India, she curtails herself yet again...for someone she loves - her first one was loving her father so dearly she did his bidding by marrying Miles...so, yeah...
Once again, terrible type-setting for the e-book. This first intro chapter is nothing but Miles as Captain on his ship sailing back home...and it gets involved in some kind of battle or whatever, but the paragraphs weren't indented and the spacing was so wide...very little story moved for one page...eh, yeah...like I said, this seems to be how the publisher does this Author's whole collection.
Eleanor and Miles entered into a marriage of convenience arranged by their fathers. When Eleanor‘s father falls ill and dying, his last wish is to see her when 2 miles, the son of his great friend. Being the dutiful daughter she does in fact Mary him for going all wishes if a love match. To add insult to injury, immediately after the ceremony Miles leaves for India as he has a position with the East India Company. After a two-year absence, Miles returns with an Indian companion with whom he has entered in a business arrangement. There is tension in the air is their marriage had not been consummated and Miles explain to Eleanor that when she was ready she must come to him. Eleanor, feeling as though miles did not hold the feelings which she had was reticent to approach him. While Niles and Eleanor were dealing with one another, a good friend of hers, kitty, came to their estate and told Eleanor she was pregnant with her fiancé‘s child. Contemplating what she should do, Kenny asked Eleanor to please “hide“ her until she could come to some conclusion. Bridget Barton has, once again, outdone herself writing a regency love story with a twist. It’s a great read and the characters are well defined.

The book is about two strangers married👰🐺 to each other in an arranged marriage. Can they find respect and affection, and then 💘love? Weird! Very Sweet!
I guess this is what I get for borrowing a book without checking gr first. There were the bones of a good story here but it fell flat. I get that this is a “clean” romance (ugh, what a stupid, loaded term) but I felt zero heat between the two leads. I love that the hero was respectful of the heroine’s boundaries, but I expected to see more attraction and struggling against it while they remained celibate for so long.
While I usually like heroines who enjoy adventure, I found myself wishing she’d chosen to remain in England, at least for a little while. Her husband was away for two years - let him give her a couple of years at home in return. They didn’t seem to need the money. I wish she had realized that she desired the journey for herself before her husband sprung his imminent departure on her. Then it wouldn’t have felt like she was forced to be the one to constantly compromise and change in the relationship.

Rarely ever do I find an author who seems to be writing books specifically for me, but Bridget Barton has done that! Her book "Bride for the Sake of Duty" is wonderful. A ship's Captain and his Lieutenant, each married and having children, told each other they wanted to see the children married to each other when the children were older. This "promise" continued as the years went by until the children were of a marriageable age. When the Lieutenant is dying, he informs his daughter that it is his dying wish to see them married and the Captain agreed and told his son this was to be done. The couple really didn't know each other other than to have met a couple of times. The story continues and the couple keep each other at arms length. But it doesn't end there, as the saying goes. What follows the wedding is so powerful and heart rending I couldn't put it down!

This story is a sad tale of a woman being forced to marry a man she didn't really know. The man takes off right after the wedding for India to work for the East India Company. He returns home to find a rigid woman and nothing he does pleases her. My heart aches for Eleanor, because she is left alone in an empty house and a father-in-law who visits. Miles, not only comes home, but brings an Indian friend with him disturbing not only the welcome home party for him, but he goes straight to his room and doesn't engage the party. I find Miles totally arrogant and should be kicked between his legs for the way he treated Eleanor for the first two years of their marriage. Eventually, circumstance lead the two together, but it still does not make up for his behavior, and Miles makes no apology for it either.
I’m happy to recommend this Regency Era romance by Bridget Barton. Eleanor and Miles have each been forced into marriage by their fathers. After the wedding and wedding night, poof! Miles leaves on a trip to India searching for the adventures he’s always dreamed of. Meanwhile, Eleanor is a lonely wife, basically abandoned. Two years later, Miles returns having decided he now wants love instead of adventure. Dude! You’ve been gone TWO YEARS and you’re going to pop back in as if everything is normal? Women don’t exactly take to trusting or loving that easily.
What remains is a delightful gem of a book. The characters are genuine and the story has a wonderful plot. If you like Regency romance, I believe you’ll enjoy this book.
This was a very good book written by Bridget Barton and I really enjoyed reading it. A promise, a young woman and a young man promised in marriage, a marriage, leaving for India, two years gone returning, a good friend, a unhappy party, getting used to each other, a friend in trouble, being proper, disappointed, a cancelled engagement, a baby, finally seeing the truth, a agreement, going back to India, finding love. Will there be a happy ever after? How many people will go to India? I would recommend this book to everyone. Buy this book and enjoy reading to find out what happens.
Engaged as children because of fathers who served in the Navy together. Eleanor finds herself married young to a man she hardly knows. He has adventuring in his soul. When he returns to England he isn't sure what to expect with a wife he hardly knows. Can these two find love amid the chaos of life? Is Aristocracy all it's thought to be? Can his right hand man, Adjit, find love? What about his travels for the East India spice company? Enter Kitty, Elsie's friend from childhood with secrets of her own. Fabulous characters and unpredictable outcomes. I highly recommend this book. Happy Reading!
I started reading this book and then life and COVID shutdown happened and I just finished it. I had problems with reading and keeping my mind centered. This was a good book with intense characters and a very intriguing storyline. I do not think it was one of the author's best books, but it is @ 4.25-4.5 on a scale. In all fairness, I would recommend this author and her books if you enjoy clean historical romance. Most of her work falls into a 5+ range. As I said just bad timing for this book and me.
I received an ARC copy of this book. This is my voluntary, honeat and completely personal review. VICKI FROM WYOMING
Am I the only one overly annoyed with this heroine? She is a bore, prickly, stiff, entirely way too prim and proper. She keeps trying to push those too prim and proper thoughts and feelings on people around her and gets offended when they have their own thoughts and opinions. At times, she is the worst of the wallflowers. Passive and meek. I ended up a fan of the hero. I did not start as one, but relative comparison led me to pick one, and it is Miles.
I could barely give this book a 3, as the story took rather long to develop. It didn’t flow as Barton’s other works, and since I quite enjoyed said other books, count me disappointed.
I only had to read 3% of this book to realize the author had no clue about reality. The preface about the so called battle was laughable. The Captain was going to give the pirates a taste of cannon fire, then the pirate ship is alongside his ship and able to grapple them. What happened, did he not fire at his cannon range. If the author had researched any ship to ship battle she would know that would not happen. The British would have shot him if he did anything so stupid. Forget this book and move along to one just a little believable.
When the betrothed as children no one thought how it would impact their lives. As her father is a few days from death he insists his daughter marries her betrothed. The next day he leaves for India, leaving her and five days later her father dies. She is left to her husband’s estate in isolation for two years. When he returns with an Indian assistant things change dramatically. You need to read to enjoy the outcome!
Mile s left Eleanor the next day after they were married, there fathers betrothed them when they were no more than babies, neither wanted the marriage , Mile,s wanted adventures, Eleanor wanted to be loved, Mile,s got what he wanted leaving Eleanor behind, two years later he returned, and finally after So long Eleanor finally got what she had always dreamed about a love of her own. Thank you ❤
Elsie and Miles are betrothed at the behest of their fathers after working together for so many years. Miles leaves to go sea the day after his wedding and doesn't return for 2 years. A lot of time has passed between these two strangers, many twists and turns come up along their way of trying to discover each other but in the end love prevails along with some adventure.
Wow!!! What a wonderful journey of adventure and love. I absolutely enjoyed reading this amazing book. Love the characters and story line. It’s such a heartwarming story with a beautiful extended epilogue to a happy ending. I absolutely loved everything about this beautiful story. Definitely a must read and highly recommended. Excellent writing as always.
Had to literally find this book through this series. The individual book is not what is on Kindle. However, zipping through it, it has to be one of the most frustrating stories I have read. The lack of honest and open communication between two polite, shy people was exasperating. The hero needed a full wake up call in courting a woman and the heroine needed to break out of herself and her controlling ways. I give it a 3 for the fact that it was written!
A different twist to this book. A rather odd story line but I guess that arranged marriages aren't all that matters in some parts of the world. Kitty's life took a turn to the better, even with her mistake. Elsie will enjoy her adventures and live happily ever after. All in all a good book.
I really like to read stories Of women who are intelligent, have a generous nature, and who can be funny. Men who are strong, brave, adventurous, and honorable. This novel had all and said it well. I really enjoyed reading their story and how they found a true love. Thank you, Jack.
Bride for the Sake of Duty is a lovely book to read. The Bride and groom are married quickly to please their father's. The groom left the next day on an adventure in India. The Bride did not see him again for 2 years. Then the adventure truly begins. Read and enjoy , I did!!!!!!
I thoroughly enjoyed this book about a young lady who marries a man she doesn’t know and then he’s gone for two years when he comes back they’re strangers and so different him for adventure she for order but as love always comes around they find each other. I absolutely adored The extended epilogue.
Another exquisite beautiful historical romance novel by Bridget Baron, a must read!! I really fell in love with the main characters, and the extended chapter. I know you will love this wonderful story as I have!
A young lady who's father at his death bed insisted that she marry his friend son . The groom left for two years then came back they try to get to no is each other . They learn to respect an care for each other. But?
The story was way to one sided. For Elise to be so stubborn in her way of thinking to think that her husband didn't have feeling for her. I was not impressed with this book.
An enjoyable story of an arranged marriage and their journey to each other. Elsie and Miles were very different from each other and it was nice to watch them find common ground and fall in love.
A lovely story about a woman who is forced by her father to marry a man she has never met. After they marry he takes off to travel. She becomes very lonely till he returns after two years.
I didn't have a problem with her having to restart the relationship again but what i have a huge problem with is being expected to believe this Indian Gentleman can be accepted as a fiancee to a nice upper class English gel. I just thought it was rather contrived.
The Best Historical Romance I’ve read in quite some time!
This book is filled to the brim with wholesome characters , well developed plot lines and exceptional writing!!! I loved every minute of it and you will too!
Bride for the Sake of Duty is typical for this time period. The unplanned pregnancy of a friend and stigma attached etc. The author also uses extended ending to obtain an email and really not ending the story.
