The Lord Poet

Rate this book
Meet Lord Edmund Troy, a carefree aristocrat and renowned poet in Victorian-era London. Idolized by the masses for his charisma and dashing good looks, he finds himself in the sights of wealthy socialite Agatha and her cousin Catrina.

Agatha appears to be the quintessential match for Lord Troy…until he becomes more acquainted with Catrina. Drawn to Catrina for her love of literature, Lord Troy finds himself in unusual territory as he yearns for her. A quiet and intelligent book lover, Catrina is thrust into the middle of their relationship despite her continued efforts to remain focused on following her dreams of becoming an author.

In a twist of events, Lord Troy and Catrina find each other in close contact when she is required to stay with him at his manor; their growing relationship stimulated by a series of truths and mistruths.

Complicating matters, Sam—Lord Troy’s most trustworthy longtime friend—and Imelda—his closest female confidante— weave themselves in the life of the Lord and end up intermingled in a web of sex, lies, and deceit.

Will Catrina unravel secrets too disastrous to rebury, or yet, will she be able to untangle herself from the deceptions and follow her dreams to success?

By turns charming, surprising, and even shocking, this story, based loosely on details of the poet Lord Byron's sometimes scandalous personal life, is an entertaining read for fans of historical romance. It's often easy to predict where the plot is going in these kinds of romances so I was pleased with how many twists and turns there were and can honestly say I could not have predicted the ending, which is very satisfying nonetheless. The author obviously has a love for British literature and for reading, a trait her appealing heroine shares. The other characters are sharply drawn, and I certainly became invested in the outcome of this many-sided web of passion. For my tastes, the plot moved too quickly in places, particularly toward the end, with some of the motivations behind characters' actions a little murky, but there is some beautiful use of descriptive language here by an author who clearly loves the magic of the written word. For Jane Austen fans who don't mind a slightly darker edge to their romantic tangles.

This book has it all. Victorian history, romance, and intrigue.

Drawing on rich material, Author Megan Franks has crafted a transporting story with engaging characters and dialogue. From the first page, you will be swept away by the beauty, social settings, and vibrant descriptions of the period. The author also explores the thought-provoking challenges of nineteenth-century women who had a passion for literature and dared to pursue writing in a male-dominated world. Wonderfully written and researched with pertinent historical references and themes, “The Lord Poet” promises an entertaining read for all, and especially those who love historical fiction and romance. It is an amazing journey of the senses, you won’t want to miss.

Great Story!

I honestly don't remember how I came across this book. Probably Facebook or Twitter. I hardly never read romance, nevertheless historical romance. But this book was great. I loved all the mentions of great literature. I loved the story. I loved the characters. If you like historical romances ( or maybe even if you don't) you'll love this book!

I am a huge fan of historical fiction and this book does not disappoint! Fantastic writing especially for a first time author. The characters were so well rounded and interesting. The scenes were so descriptive without being too wordy. I felt as though I was right there with the characters. Loved the ending. It was great read from start to finish. I highly recommend.

How do I review The Lord Poet? That’s a thought that’s given me pause as I sit down to do this. Most of the things I want to talk about would be spoilers, so obviously I can’t do that. But perhaps that’s a good place to start --- the first half of the book is largely a ‘getting to know the cast’ as we learn about the characters, and in the second half there are a lot of ‘secrets’ about the characters that start to get revealed to show us how much we still have to learn about them.

The primary story involves a focus on Catrina and her new friendships with Sam, and Edmund. All three are well-read writers and are able to share some of those interests with each other. The men find it surprising to run into a woman with the literary background she has.

Their friendships begin to grow more complicated and emotional, as the men are good friends and feelings begin to develop between herself and each of them. There are also other people involved who have their own ideas about who should be with whom, and that adds some intrigue into the mix.

If I had to pick one thing I didn't care for in the story, I would say it's how the last quarter of the book handles the characters. Some of the character decisions were a pretty big surprise for me, and not necessarily in a good way. I do, however, think that many people would like the way it wraps up, so that’s probably just a personal preference.

(Insider tip, that not ‘too’ spoiler’ish: if you’ve been reading a lot of reverse harem... it might seem like this is in that realm, but get it out of your head for this book or you might be in for the same shock.)

Overall, the quality of a historical romance isn’t in question at all and I think you can see that from the other reviews as well. The writing is good and interesting and draws you into the scenery. The characters are interesting and developed, and the story has some good twists and turns. Worth reading!

History and romance all in one

This was stunning from the beginning. The author grabs you and pulls you right in. Catrina is a writer living with her rich cousins to be introduced into society. Sam is a sweet guy who is kind to her. Lord Troy is hard to read for most of the book although at the end his secrets come out. You wont want to put this down!

Every writer dreams of being published and it was especially hard for women in the 1860s. This is exactly what Catrina Bennett dreams of. Will the twists and turns of romance cause her to lose everything?
