At seventy-three years young, #1 New York Times bestselling author and health guru Suzanne Somers has established herself as a leading voice on antiaging. With A New Way to Age, she takes things a step further to present a revolutionary philosophy for a longer and better quality life—in the form of easy-to-understand lessons and doctor interviews that will make you feel like you’ve just had the best checkup of your life.
There is a new way to age. I’m doing it and it’s the best decision I’ve ever made. I love this stage of my life: I have ‘juice,’ joy, wisdom, and perspective; I have energy, vitality, clearheadedness, and strong bones.
Most of us are far too comfortable with the present paradigm of aging, which normalizes pills, nursing homes, and “the big three”: heart disease, cancer, and Alzheimer’s disease. But you don’t have to accept this fate. Now there’s a new way to grow older—with vibrancy, freedom, confidence, and a rockin’ libido. This health bible from Suzanne Somers will explain how to stop aging like your parents and embrace cutting-edge techniques such as: balancing nutritional and mineral deficiencies; detoxifying your gut for weight loss; pain management with non-THC cannabis instead of harmful opioids; and much more.
Aging well is mainly about the choices you make on a daily basis. It can be a fantastic process if you approach it wisely. After a lifetime of research, Suzanne came to a simple conclusion: what you lose in the aging process must be replaced with natural alternatives. In order to thrive you have to rid your body of chemicals and toxins. Start aging the new way today by joining Suzanne and her trailblazing doctors as they all but unearth the fountain of youth.
Librarian’s note: There is more than one author in the Goodreads database with this name.
Suzanne Somers was an American actress, author, and businesswoman. Best known for her role as the ditzy blonde Chrissy Snow on the ABC sitcom Three's Company, she also had a noted starring role on the sitcom Step by Step as Carol Foster Lambert. She later capitalized on her acting career by also establishing herself as an author of a series of self-help books. She had released two autobiographies, two self-help books, four diet books, and a book about hormone replacement therapy. She had featured items of her design on the Home Shopping Network.
The book is full of information on how to age. I am in my seventy's like Ms. Somers and am always interested in how not to age. Ms. Somers interviews doctors and each chapter is full of discussion on the topic of that perticular chapter, much of it more than I can comprehend. While it all sounds rational, I am left not really knowing how to proceed if I choose to do so. Many supplements were discussed and after looking on Amazon, they are all there to buy, but I am not a person who would just order and take them. No amounts of the supplements were discussed and reading the comments of those taking them were varied from 5 stars to 1 star.I guess I would have to find a doctor in my area to discuss all this with and then I am not sure I would be up to taking a lot of supplements each day with the hopes of not aging.
I rarely feel so strongly about a book that I feel it necessary to state my opinion in a review.
I’m not sure what I expected from the book before I picked it up, but I honestly feel that the author is out of touch with the reality that most people experience.
I am sure the research and science is sound, but not everyone has the resources at their disposal that the author does. Therefore, the book basically pissed me off because now I know what’s possible and what I cannot have.
I was fine not knowing what was possible before I pick this book up. Now I’m just angry. I couldn’t even read it all the way through.
This book contains a lot of great information that empowers people to find cutting edge solutions to a wide variety of issues that arise as we get older. Loved it!
I was just going to browse this but ended up reading the whole thing. Alternative and Anti-aging doctors deal with the body's toxic burden. So many toxins in the environment, including our food, why so many Americans have GI issues. . Somers urges everyone to take probiotics and I agree. (I started having issues at the young age of 32. Finally was helped by cleanse pills and probiotics) I like Arbonne "digestive plus" probiotics). We all know that Americans are over-medicated and most pharmaceuticals just treat symptoms. Balancing hormones is a large part of what is talked about in this book. An interesting one is bioidentical hormone replacement.
In the chapter about stem cells it was interesting to find out after her partial masectomy, she regrew her breast with stem cells from her belly! The immune system: over age forty, it starts to decline and takes a nosedive at sixty-five. Yep, my father was relatively healthy. At 65 he got pneumonia, at 66 he got type-2 diabetes and a mild stroke. Now he's on tons of pills. He had never before taken medication in his life.
"In closing, the information throughout this book is meant to be provocative in order to stimulate interest in the newest possibilities." I think I will check out some of the supplements she recommends, some are available on her website suzannesomers.com.
I love all of Suzanne Somers' books and this one does not disappoint. It is loaded with all kinds of helpful information to help you feel younger as you age. One thing I like about her books is that they are backed by medical doctors and scientists who are on the cutting edge of functional and holistic medicine. These experts are willing to take the risk of shunning the "medical mafia" of mainstream medicine, which in my opinion, is a big mess. Conventional doctors have their hands tied by their "standards of care" which are dictated to them by the all-powerful insurance companies. This system can work well for certain ailments (i.e. a broken arm), but they fail drastically when it comes to issues like aging, autoimmune conditions, pain management, nutrition, brain health, and more. Hopefully this system will change someday, but in the mean time, you have Suzanne Somers, her myriad specialists, and A New Way To Age.
I love to read about alternative medicine and Suzanne Somers' books centered on interviews with progressive medical doctors never disappoint. I like this one especially and have already benefited from some of the insights, such as taking a certain kind of melatonin which works much better for me. I don't think she necessarily shills supplements, as some people may complain, but you do have to be open to taking them, among other protocols. The majority of supplements are not sold by her, rather companies like Life Extension, which has been doing clinical research in this arena for many years. I'm open to it!
This is a great resource book. It is grouped together by categories: hormones, heart, gut, etc. There are many interviews with doctors who are leaders in their particular field of aging. I learned a great deal from this book.
I am skeptical. The things the author recommends are beyond the budget of many seniors. In addition, Somers recommends supplements and techniques that are not yet main stream. Doctors that practice this sort of philosophy are available to Somers but not most of American seniors.
Certainly the baby boomer generation is redefining what aging can be like. I believe it will be, in the end, a mixture of traditional and homeopathic methods.
Read it for yourself and make your own conclusions.
This is mostly a collection of interviews from private positions that only she has access to because they’re so expensive The rest of us can’t afford it. Well, the advice wise insightful. It’s also useless because one I don’t really know which supplements to take them to I don’t have access to any of these doctors who can continually monitor all of my formal levels of experimenting with different dosages of estrogen, DHEA, testosterone, etc..
I'm sure entry-level people would find something of value but it lacked the depth and insight of true health and beauty. It was discredited off the bat by recommending bioidentical hormones that my naturopath assures me promote multiple cancers. Wish I'd bought a Kindle sample before I spent the money. Lots of good information in this book, however, the reader would be better served if there were summaries at the end of each chapter/interview of action steps. Otherwise, it is hard to follow and know what could actually help from each chapter.
I don’t think this book was as good as some of her other books. The book interviews many doctors and I felt they didn’t go into the details as much. I didn’t find that I learned anything new. But if you are not familiar with the new medical technology out there then you might like this.
Very interesting. I did not agree with all of her recommendations but it’s okay to have differences of opinion. The book was overwhelming as I can’t afford to fly all over the world or to go on all of the supplements she suggests. But it was an interesting book.
Well researched some of it seems unattainable but really interesting to think how aging can be viewed as a treatable condition rather than an inevitability.
lots of great material like all her books. Good interviews w/cutting edge Dr's even tho few products and treatments are affordable for the average person since insurance doesn't cover the alternatives but lots of good info on supplements and appreciated her strong attachment to Life Extension products and blood testing which I use.
Ms Somers gives detailed treatment options for stopping, and in some cases reversing, aging. Interesting, but I feel it is physically and financially beyond the average person. If this interests you, I think the book, rather than the audio version I had, would be better. I gave up trying to write down the different treatments.
This was an amazing book with physician interviews and the science behind the protocol. I enjoyed it way more than expected! My two sisters just picked up their copies and mom snagged mine so she could read it too.
Excellent info, her best one yet. After reading this book, which contains many interviews with cutting edge health care practitioners, you'll be armed with more science and information than your PCP. And, that's a good thing.
I had to read this book slowly, as there was so much to learn and digest, presented mostly in the form of conversations with functional medicine doctors. The material covers so many aspects of aging and the body's systemic breakdown with aging, and how to maintain optimal health through supplements various physical strategies, bio identical hormones and more. The information is fascinating, if not sometimes overwhelming. Overwhelming because there are so many bodily systems that need to remain in tune and there are so many possible supplements to take and strategies to pursue that it is hard to identify a beginning point, or one or two that are not terribly expensive. So after some thought, I have decided upon one or two, including a grounding mat and a new supplement.
