The sea stole their souls. Now they want my heart.
It’s 1997 and Ireland is changing, but not fast enough for me. I’m tired of this tiny village and my life of “onlys”. The only gay man who’s out. The only son who never knew his father.
The ocean has always been my one refuge, that is, until the dawn I’m snatched up by selkies. Three men who died at sea long ago and became shape-shifting seals, straight out of the pages of an Irish fairytale. They thought they were saving me from the same fate—instead, they’ve bound me to them.
For seven days they can’t leave my side, while I try to discover if one of them is my soul mate. A week to decide if I want to be with Cathal, whose laugh lifts the sky, or Oliver, with his charming manners and thoughtful frowns. Or bossy silver fox David, who only seems to have the frowns. Especially when he’s talking to me. I’m supposed to choose only one of them or walk away from all of them. But I’m tired of my life of onlys.
Selkie Sea is a stand-alone novella (29,000 words) set in the same world as Storm Boys (Storm Riders 1), with all new characters. These characters will also appear in Storm Angel (Storm Riders 2), but Selkie Sea is a complete story and there is no need to read any other Storm Riders books to enjoy this one. This is a medium burn gay harem paranormal fantasy romance with multiple love interests (MMMM) and an HEA.
Davis has written everything from angsty but sweet MMMM fantasy to fun, cozy MM fantasy. But one thing is certain — her heroes (and anti-heroes) will always get their happily ever after. Living in a small seaside village in Ireland, she hasn’t given up hope of running into a selkie (dragons may prove to be more elusive). In between writing, she wrangles cats, watches Asian dramas and ugly cries over the fates of fictional characters.
Marin, beaten and bruised, turns into his beloved ocean to cool down. Too far from the coastline to return, too cold, too sad, and then it’s all black. When he’s awake he’s with three beautiful selkies, sea creature shifters. Within seven days he has to choose one of them to return with, to his realm.
All three have their characteristics, their sweetness, sexiness and their hurt and Marin can’t choose. He has a beautiful and marvelous time with them. The three already had a bond, he can’t sacrifice one to the other.
What an energetic, captivatingly written story. A lot of magical moments, it was delicious witty, sweet, sexy and everyone had their own story. It had more depth than I expected. I loved this awesome harem story!
I’m a huge fan of harem/poly books in both m/f and m/m genres, obviously these days I stick with mostly the m/m. That being said it’s usually hard to find good solid books in this genre that are both steamy and have a good plot, bonus if they have a lot of depth.
This is the second Davis Lavender book I’ve read, (not including a very short prequel that I won’t count) and so far I can honestly say, that it’s been no hardship. I felt Storm Boys was a little rusty in its own sort of debut way, and with this one you could definitely tell the hinges had been greased a little bit to allow for a much smoother read.
This may sound odd but in all honestly the beginning of this book was my favorite part. The book starts with Martin crying in the ocean pouring out all his anguish and hurt, and really I thought it was some of the most in-depth writing in the book. We don’t even know the kid yet and we already feel for him, we want to know what happened, and who’s ass needs to be kicked to make everything better.
From there we meet our 3 selkies who half down half save Martin, and whisk him off to Hy-Brasil. From here I still enjoyed the plot, but I thought it lost a little bit of depth with the romance. So far in both Storm Boys and this the romance was pretty much hashed out the same and both fell kind of flat for me.
Maybe a little spoilerish ahead.....
Here, Martin was pretty adamant about leaving Hy-Brasil as soon as the 7 day bond was complete... he then he finds out about possibly being mated which would greatly benefit any of the 3 men, but he is still adamant about leaving. Which is rightfully so because he still doesn’t know any of them really... But even though he’s adamant about leaving them behind, and still doesn’t really know them... he pretty much makes it his goal to prove to each of them that he’s the one they want... the one that can make them crack, or make them feel alive. It felt kind of cruel at times. Fortunately, since I love to read the smut (especially the fantasy and paranormal), I figured the author was just trying to portray a deeper connection between them, a kind of insta love or mate bond that none of them could see yet. It just didn’t come out that way at times... but also maybe I’m wrong...
Man... I gots say the climax of this book hurt a little... I am not going to spoil it, but I thought Grey was going to be around a bit, maybe sticking his noise in here or there at awkward times... 🙁
Anywho, in the end I really enjoyed the book and more so the world building, and I look forward to continuing with whatever comes next.
sweet and magical.. so many raw emotions.. so many times i was angry and sad.. so many times i was happy and loved.. it was all around just a fun sweet read.
A quick read, and the resolution was solidly done, but it was all just a bit too head-over-heels in lust for me. I'd consider reading a more slow-burny story with the characters actually getting to know each other though. There's plenty of history that could be gone into that would have fleshed this out a little.
