Anh Do

Anh Do is a comedian, artist and also one of the highest selling Australian authors of all time, with total book sales approaching 3 million.

Anh’s first book, The Happiest Refugee, is his enormously popular memoir recounting his perilous childhood journey in a tiny boat from war-torn Vietnam to Australia. The book became an instant hit and has won numerous awards including Australian Book of the Year.

Anh has since turned his attention to children’s book writing.

Weird Do is an illustrated series starring Weir (1st name), Do (2nd name), a kid with a very unfortunate name. Aimed at the 8+ market, these books have gone off the charts as national best-sellers, resulting in 14 books total and more on the way. The first Weir Do won the Australian Book Industry Award for Older Children (2014).

Other children's book series include Hotdog, the adventures of a sausage dog and also Ninja Kid, the escapades of a 10 year old Nerd who discovers he’s the world’s last ninja.

In 2019, Anh released Wolf Girl, a series about a little girl who gets lost in forest and befriends a group of dogs and an enormous Wolf who become her family. Then came Rise of the Mythix, which marks the first of a number of sagas described by Anh as ‘A superhero movie in a book’.

All of Anh Do’s books are mega bestsellers and all rate between 4-5 star averages on websites such as Goodreads and Amazon.

It’s clear that Anh is an exciting voice in literature, able to delight across age ranges and different genres with great success, and he isn’t planning to slow down any time soon.

The WeirDo series always makes me wish I could turn back the clock to enable me to appreciate them from the perspective of a child. Sure, adult me loves them but I’m certain kid me would have reread them so often my copies would be practically falling apart. Kid me definitely would have been in awe of their brilliant lenticular covers!

In Weirdomania!, Miss Franklin has asked her class to write about the jobs their parents have previously done. Weir’s mother currently works at the animal hospital and his father is a firefighter but he doesn’t know any jobs they’ve held before these ones.

Weir and his friend Bella learn interesting and funny new stories about their parents. They also discover their families share a love of wrestling, in particular a champion wrestler called ‘The Block’. (Hmm, that name sounds familiar …)

There are plenty of dad jokes to go around in this book, so many in fact that even the kids join in.
‘I guess I’m just a chip off the old BLOCK!
Bella and her family are looking forward to seeing ‘The Block’ beat his opponent, Ka-Boom, at Wrestle-Crazia but Weir’s family don’t have tickets. Weir is hoping to win them by putting together the best costume for Funny Friday, but first he needs to think of a brilliant idea.

It all works out in the end and everyone has a great time at Wrestle-Crazia,

where things go even better than expected!

I really enjoyed this story. I loved finding out the occupations of some of the parents of Weir’s classmates. Weir’s imagination was working overtime coming up with so many funny and unusual ideas for costumes, all of which came to life in the illustrations. I even learned something new about one of Weir’s family members.

The jokes are always so corny in this series but I still can’t keep the smile off my face whenever I read another book. Even the animals think this book’s funny!

As usual, Jules Faber’s illustrations enhance the humour, complimenting Anh Do’s story perfectly.

I would be quite happy to go back to the very beginning and binge reread the entire series. I love Weir and his family and I can’t wait to find out what they’re going to be doing next!

WHAT A TWIST!!! Tornado's reveal was GREAT!!!

I love the BLOCK... I wonder who he was modelled on.

This is a book that both my son and I got into... When his dad read ahead with him, I had to go back and read the chapters I'd missed. Another great addition to the Weir-do Series!

This one garnered a few chuckles when I read it to my son, but no uproarious laughter.
It seemed to be down on word count than some of the previous ones (that could be my imagination) but I did like the way his mother is portrayed in this one. Lots of jokes, though it didn't tend to be funny whenever it said something was super hilarious. My son enjoyed it.

I didn’t like this one much. Another costume competition (do they ever stop making costumes?). This time it’s for tickets to wrestling to see The Block (Rock knock-off) and a member of the Do family who used to be a famous wrestler with seemingly no money to show for it.

I loved this book so much. The twist at the end was really exciting and cool. Ahn Do is up there as great a author like Enid Blyton and Davis Walliams.

I did not enjoy this book as much as his other books. It was still a very entertaining story but it wasn't as good.
