So I was all set to give this book three stars. True the writing wasn't quite perfect, but the pictures were stunning and the stories intersting.
And then, Canwell got her history wrong. Not just a little wrong, but absolutely wrong. Makes you wonder why an editor didn't catch the errors. The first one is when Canwell writes that the Gunpowder Plot was done to put Henry VIII's younger daughter Elizabeth on the throne.
Really? That must have been news to her because she was dead by than.
The second major error was writing that Bonnie Prince Charlie died at the Battle of Cullen. Really? Truly? So all those escape stories were fiction.
And why did they have to print crime scene photos from the Valentine's Day Massacre?
"Ghosts of the World" has many tales of tragic and horrific encounters of spirits and their tragic stories. When first reading this book you should expect a compilation of numerous ghost stories. Over all these stories were either historical accounts of unexplained stories of apparitions or spirits. Before reading this I was expecting physical research behind these stories and not so much personal accounts. It was a pretty good book but lacked anything about ghosts besides the stories themselves. I would recommend this book to a more advanced reader that has a interest in historical account of different people.
This is a great coffee table book on ghosts. The highlights: * It covers just about every major ghost story ever told. * It's a photograph book first & foremost, with lots of great pictures intermixed with the ghost tales. * It's got a great binding, sturdy thick glossy paper pages, and the built-in bookmarks are a great touch.
But this is most definitely a sampler book; for the stories touched upon in the book that interest you, it is best to follow them up with another book that goes into more depth on it.
While not a believer in anything of this nature, I have to admit it is one of those things about which I would love to be proven wrong. A compilation of various famous "ghosts" that do make for an entertaining read, especially when you come across one you're not familiar with.
Sure the gunpowder plot took place in 1605 to get the protestant king James the first off the throne. This book claims it was to put Elizabeth the daughter of Henry VIII on the throne. Hmm, pretty sure James ascended to the throne after Elizabeth I died, and as she was protestant don't understand how this catholic plot would succeed. Maybe they wanted to have her stuffed and put on the throne. Do think someone in editing should have picked up on this glaringly obvious mistake. Three stars, mainly for the photos, would give more if they could sort out the obvious mistakes in the text.
The writing in this book is so bad it's actually funny. It's also incredibly annoying if you're actually trying to read for content, since sometimes the sentences just will not parse. The entries are also light on content and vague rather than detailed. The photographs are good, although they don't always have much to do with the text.
I enjoyed the book. Dont much care if the stories are spot on. Its not my history lol. Sucks though cause you sure got bashed for the mistakes. I agree though, you would think the editor would have caught any mistakes. But overall I enjoy the book. And I give it 5 stars for the great photography. Its one of my favorite bathroom readers
very feeble, even allowing for presumption that Diane Canwell is trying to entertain and appeal to a wide readership including kids. Even by kids' standards it is pretty banal and badly written. The research is also sloppy: dates, names, places quite often plain wrong.
I liked the book itself but the location of some pictures with their descriptions on a different page I didn't care for. I thought it could have been organized better. But the text was very informative. I enjoyed it.
I grabbed this book for the second time and I keep loving it. I add another star, because I find it this time more interesting and I enjoyed it. The pictures are beautiful, however the descriptions on the photos should be more organize.
