As the competition intensifies the choice looms between the professional and the personal. Can they find a way beyond their past decisions and present aspirations to take a chance on the one thing they’re not looking for?
Kara Isaac lives in Wellington, New Zealand. When she's not chasing three hobbit-sized little people, she spends her time writing horribly bad first drafts and wishing you could get Double Stuf Oreos in New Zealand. She is the author of the RITA Award-winning Then There Was You, along with four other contemporary romances. She loves to connect with readers on GoodReads, Twitter, Instagram, Facebook and through her website.
I was looking forward to this book and trying out a new-to-me Christian fiction author but unfortunately, DNF'd this one after a few chapters. I completely understand/believe mistreatment in the workplace occurs and believe it should be taken very seriously. However, the author placed a focus on misogyny, comments about men being awful, and other political undertones I didn't enjoy or want to continue reading about.
I may have a new favorite Kara Isaac novel! My favorite has been her debut: Close to You.
Start with Me includes main characters that are both reeling from past hurts. British Victor Carlisle has been sober for three years, but the havoc he wreaked on his family, friends and others prior to going into rehab is vast. I loved seeing the raw feelings he had about staying sober, needing his sponsor and use of the AA steps. American Lacey O'Connor escaped her small town to make something for herself. She is so focused on her career and being in control that there is little space for God or romance.
Plenty of plot shifts and subtle humor within the pages. This novel is highly recommended for fans of contemporary romance.
My gratitude to the author for a complimentary e-copy of the novel. I was not required to post a review and the opinions expressed are my own.
'Living life only for himself had turned him into someone he didn't like and hurt everyone he loved.'
It's been a while since we've had a new Kara Isaac book to read and it felt SO good to bury myself in one again! I remember when I read her first book and realized I wanted to be a forever fan. My opinion has only solidified further with each book she writes.
'How much stupid did she have to deal with before the sun had even gotten above the trees?'
Lacey O'Connor is banking on the promotion she's spent a decade striving for when the company goes through some huge changes. Then she walks in her office and sees the one man she has never forgotten on her office sofa. He made a big impression on her five years ago; now he has no memory of her at all. Talk about hurt. Victor Carlisle isn't trying to be forgetful, but he's spend most of his life as a playboy alcoholic and has hurt nearly everyone he's come in contact with. Now, with a company merger in the making, he finds himself in competition with Lacey for a promotion.
Of course, there's much more at play here than this, but the way Isaac brings everything together is nothing short of absolute amazement. She delves into the emotions of these two people so deeply that I was stunned at their feelings. Truly. When I start reading one of her books, I just can barely bring myself to stop for necessary things. I stayed up well into the wee hours to finish this one and still the characters are deep in my heart.
Isaac probes well beneath the surface of all parts of these characters' lives to bring to light things that have been hidden by each for their entire lives. Then they are there: laid out before them and waiting for a solution. I was completely captivated the entire time it took me to read this book. Seriously captivated. I was cheering for them, crying with them, and loving them, too. The spiritual aspect is quite good here: we see the wonderful mercies, grace and redemption of God. As well as His forgiveness. It brings to mind the verse that tells us all things work together for good to them that love the Lord. It doesn't say there won't be mountains to climb and many hurts to deal with. I loved this book so much. I already want another. Kara Isaac is a forever favorite of mine and always will be. And let me tell you this: the woman can write a pulse pounding, unforgettable ending! I have went back and reread her endings on previous books many times. I highly recommend this book.
*My thanks to the author and publisher for a copy of this book. The opinion stated in this review is expressly my own.
So much to like with this book! I loved that it went outside the normal setting of so many Christian Fiction titles (I do like books set in small towns but I love variety even more) and gave us a story set in a big corporation. And how the restructuring of said corporation comes about is all kinds of fun. Kara Isaac hits us with some great one-liners that added a layer of wit to some deeper issues at play with the characters. The romance was there in full swing and, if I may say, this author has knocked it out of the park with this one.
“The thought split through his brain like an ax through kindling, leaving him feeling like he'd just had a lobotomy."
Kara Isaac once again delivers witty, clever writing infused with beautifully layered and broken characters, heart-breaking past and tender uplifting redemption and forgiveness all nestled in a meticulously fine-tuned plot that will entrance every reader from the first page. Victor and Lacey's story will make you weep, laugh, and cheer as they confront their insecurities, fears, and failures.
Victor is a recovering alcoholic committed to turning his life around when a company merger lands him in the path of Lacey, who is climbing the corporate ladder to senior management. They're thrown into one adventure after another together - from a company-sponsored wilderness experience to Victor's brother's wedding to family squabbles - and their relationship is fun, raw, and real. Victor is an admirable hero, learning to own up to his mistakes and rectify them even when it hurts. Lacey is a strong and loyal heroine who is stubborn and set in her ways but soft-hearted enough to realize when she's wrong. There are plenty of romcom moments in the book that had me laughing out loud but also achingly heart-rending moments that had me tearing up. If you enjoy contemporary romance, you won't want to miss this one.
Reading Can't Help Falling (about Victor's brother Peter and Lacey's cousin Emelia) prior to this book will give more background story into Victor's family and his past but you can still read this book as a stand-alone like I did. For those new to Kara Isaac's writing, the book One Thing I know is a previous book about one of Lacey's best friends Rachel, which I highly recommend as well.
I received a copy of the book from the author/publisher and was under no obligation to post a positive review. All comments and opinions are solely my own.
She cannot write a sub par novel! I was enthralled and captivated by this book. I loved the familiar characters from other novels, the journey of Victor and Lacey and the sharp wit that is synonymous with a Kara Isaac novel.
And I especially love THIS bad-boy redemption story! Wow, did this hit all the right spots. In fact, this is now my second favourite of Kara Isaac’s books after Then There Was You. (And believe me, second favourite is high praise considering I’ve enjoyed every book she’s ever published.) But the thing that really grabbed me about this particular bad-boy redemption story is that the redemption itself happened prior to the opening of the book. What we see in this story is how very difficult it is to step out of the shadow cast by a well-earned reputation and its far-reaching consequences. And that’s an aspect of redemption that doesn’t get as much attention in Christian fiction as it should.
Aside from that, it’s impossible to pinpoint one particular aspect of the book that stands out, because the whole thing is just fantastic—the writing, the plot, the characters. You wouldn’t call this a romantic comedy, but it still features Isaac’s trademark one liners: He was wedged into his seat tighter than a Kardashian in a playsuit. The corporate shakeup (including a week of boot camp in the Minnesota wilderness) was not only the perfect catalyst for bringing Lacey and Victor together and keeping the tension high, but it kept the plot moving in unpredictable ways, making for a highly engrossing read. And Isaac’s character portrayal and development was as superb as always—complex human beings navigating complex relationships of all different kinds with an authenticity that encompasses every emotion from laughter through to tears.
I loved every minute of Victor and Lacey’s story—the way they gradually revealed their true selves to one another, their chemistry together (romantic and otherwise), and the way they respected each other’s vulnerabilities. But especially the picture of grace, of loving someone well in spite of the mess that may come with it.
The world needs many more books from Kara Isaac!
I received a copy of this novel from the author. This has not influenced the content of my review, which is my honest and unbiased opinion.
I am so pleased to see a new book from author Kara Isaac. At one time I thought there might not be any more from her and I was so disappointed but understood that life throws us curve balls and sometimes you just have to keep your head above water. Thankfully, Kara Isaac is back to writing and I'm grateful.
Because of the gap in time, it took me a bit to remember the last book this author wrote and how those characters lapped over into this book. I think this book can stand alone but you will be more satisfied if you read Can't Help Falling first. It really sets the stage for this book and it's main characters.
This is a story of forgiveness, redemption and love in many forms. Lacey and Victor both have complicated family relations. There is strain, tension and guilt for them both as they struggle with decisions they have made and how to repair mistakes and accept what cannot be changed. It's like they are dancing a similar dance, facing outward until they bump into each other, turn, and really see the other person for the first time. Then they realize they are both dancing similar dances. They can see themselves in the other.
I enjoyed the slow burn romance and the attraction on the fringes. I love how Victor was willing to put so much on the line to prove himself to everyone. He felt so stripped down and vulnerable for so much of the book that I couldn't help but cheer for him. He was the underdog in need of a good cheering section for sure. On top of the familial tension, there is the professional tension for both Lacey and Victor. They are battling against those things for most of the book. It definitely felt like a sigh of relief to get to some resolution by the end of the book.
The players for the next book have been set up nicely and I'm excited to read their story! This book is on KU if you have that.
Content: talk of substance abuse, intimate relations outside of marriage (no details at all), kissing. Talk of God, praying.
Start with Me is such a fun romance! Lacey and Victor have a past—that Victor can't remember—and that creates a bit of an enemies-to-lovers/second chance romance dynamic that's a lot of fun to watch.
Victor—brother of Peter from Can't Help Falling—is looking for redemption. After going through rehab and renewing his faith, he's not the man he once was ... but some people (especially Peter) are determined to keep him in that immature/reckless/playboy box. After spending some time with Victor, Lacey sees that he truly is a changed man, a man she could see herself with. However, the fact that they're both vying for promotions within their merging companies and the strict no-fraternization policy complicate matters.
Quite a bit of the book centers around the office dynamics and the competition for places in the new merged company, and I have to admit that I didn't really care much about that. Perhaps I should've been pulling for Lacey and Victor to get the jobs of their dreams, but really, all I could care about was their relationship! Their chemistry was palpable, and I especially loved the way that Lacey became Victor's champion with his family. This ended up being such a satisfying romance, and it reminded me again why I love Kara Isaac's writing. 4-1/2 stars.
Disclosure of material connection: I received a complimentary copy of this book. I was not required to write a positive review, and the opinions expressed are my own.
I have been so eager about Victor's story, since, let's be real, he was such a off-putting dude as a secondary character! However, I love a good redemption story, and I knew Kara Isaac would do it justice. Lacey is a bit of a hard case to crack. She has a past that compels her to live her life a certain way, determined never to be swayed or pulled down by another person, especially a man. Victor, sober for three years now, is still facing the repercussions of his past behavior. The slowest to forgive is his brother, Peter, and unfortunately, Lacey, although Victor doesn't remember their brief encounter. Lacey isn't convinced that Victor has really changed, and when they are thrown together as two sister companies merge, their personal and professional values are put to the test.
The corporate battles are interesting to read about since that's not a setting I could ever see myself. Additionally, the realistic look at what it means to be a recovering alcoholic, whether that's always attending AA meetings, continuous communication with sponsors, and honest discussions with loved ones about your struggles - it's all portrayed so tastefully, and in such a way that shows the layers of recovery.
The plot flows steadily, moving around in several settings but feeling grounded in each one. I really loved not only the evolution of Victor and Lacey's relationship, but also their personal growth as well. The romance has the perfect amount of sweetness, and the secondary characters add a lot of depth to the story, especially Victor's family and Lacey's best friends in the States. While Isaac's books are usually humorous, I think this may be one of her more wittier books, with snappy dialogue and some hilarious observations. It all just felt like real life conversations, nothing forced or overly dramatic. To me, it seemed like there is some set up in this story for another character to have a full-length novel about them - or perhaps that just me being wishful and already looking forward to more from Kara Isaac - which I most assuredly am. I highly recommend Start With Me to fans of realistic contemporary romances!
I received a advanced e-galley from the author; I was not required to post a positive review, and these are my honest thoughts and opinions.
I had forgotten how much I love Kara Isaac’s writing style. I loved this book! I enjoyed seeing familiar characters in this book. I’m glad that we finally got to read more about Victor and that he was able to have a second chance. I also like how she's able to write about characters that are flawed. That makes them feel even more real to me. Her stories are so original! This book made me want to go back and reread all of Kara Isaac’s other books! I definitely recommend her books!
I was given a complimentary copy of this ebook from the author, but was not required to write a review. The thoughts and comments are my own.
Such a beautiful story of grace, forgiveness, endurance, strength, redemption, and love! I absolutely loved Victor and Lacey's story. Well written, and all the feelings! Kara Isaac is at her best here. ❤️
If I'm being honest, I haven’t read a single book by Kara Isaac that I haven’t immensely enjoyed. . . And I’ve read all of them. So I was obviously super excited for this one! And as a self-proclaimed fan, I was very disappointed in myself for not immediately recognizing the characters’ names and putting together that they were from “Can’t Help Falling” and “One Thing I Know.” But my embarrassment aside, this may very well be my favorite book of hers, so far!
As I’ve said in more than one review, I absolutely adore Ms. Isaac’s writing style! Especially when she’s writing an English character. I can almost hear the accent as I’m reading (sigh). I love how she draws me into her novels from the very first pages and I spend the rest of the day wondering where the story will lead next. Her books always keep me up much too late at night, particularly considering that I have a newborn and should be sleeping when she sleeps. But I found this tale far too hard to put down, so I was grabbing every extra moment I had to devour it! As previously mentioned, these characters do tie into a couple of Ms. Isaac’s other books, though each of them are written to stand alone. Which is great, if you don’t care to start with the prior books, but I personally adored those as well and would highly recommend them!
There were so many things I loved about this book! I loved the dialogue: the quick wit, quips, and arguments. I loved the relationship between Lacey, Rachel, and Anna. And watching Victor seek healing and restoration from his past. He so desires to be a better man than he was in the past. I loved the redemptive theme throughout. I wanted to slap Peter more than once for how he treated his brother (thankfully, Emilia took care of that for me). I loved little Libby! She was only there for a couple pages, but she stole my heart. I loved how real the characters seem; they came alive within the pages and I felt as though I was saying “goodbye” to dear friends by the time I turned the final page. And honestly, I so appreciated the fact that not every character is automatically a Christian by the end. There’s no cliched sudden confession of belief. It wouldn’t have suited the story or the characters, and I admire that Ms. Isaac chose to stay true to them.
My take: if you’ve never read one of Kara Isaac’s books, you’re missing so much! Including but not limited to: sleep deprivation due to fictional characters. Said characters taking you through a variety of emotions such as anger, sadness (sometimes with tears), and joy. Great dialogue, including English and Australian accents. Laughing out loud in public because you chose to bring your book along. Adventures on multiple continents, including America, Europe, Australia, etc. Do you need any other reasons to pick up this book (and her other ones)?
*My thanks to the author for my copy of this book! I was not required to write a review, positive or otherwise, and have not been compensated in any way. All opinions expressed are my own.
START WITH ME is one of those books that stays with you after you've turned the last page. It's about the messiness of life, forgiveness, redemption, faith, and letting someone else really see you. It's about complex families, career goals, friendship and romance. And in the end, it's a story that will pull on readers' emotions and tug on their hearts. Highly recommended to Christian contemporary romance readers, as well as main-stream romance readers who don't mind a light inspirational element!
Surprisingly, this was the first book that I've read by Isaac, although it's the second on my shelves. I had heard really good things and been meaning to give her a try for quite a while. I'm quite happy that I did! These characters were deep and complex, with pasts that they were still trying to recover from, but who were amazing people. They were both really easy to connect with, and I think that, in part, was due to how vulnerable they come across the page. They had walls that were always up, but then somehow they started to let each other in. I also loved that they're acquaintances and then friends before they decide they can't stop thinking about each other. There were all these obstacles though and things they were still dealing with that they had to figure out before there could be any type of happily-ever-after. The romance is super sweet, but also definitely swoon-worthy. *sigh*
Then there were the relationships. I loved Lacey's friends! There obviously was a lot of history there, and I think I need to go back and read a previous book, but I could still keep up with everything. The family dynamics were quite interesting as well and I enjoyed seeing those develop as the story progressed. There were also co-worker and boss relationships. Jen was a definite favorite. I also liked how this posed the question of what you would do if you had worked years for a promotion and it meant giving up love, which I think is something many can relate to.
My one complaint is that there was a bit too much back and forth with the romance. Plus both felt they weren't worthy of the other, which I get, but they both felt like they were in the same situation and I wanted there to be a bit more contrast there. I also would have liked a bit more added on at the end. I was still trying to figure out how they would exactly make it work.
In the end, was it what I wished for? I thoroughly enjoyed this story and will definitely be reading more from this author! A story with great characters, a plot that was relatable in so many ways, an element of faith that was woven lightly throughout, and a romance that made for a delightful read as it tugged my heart back and forth.
Content: Some innuendo, drinking, references to past mistakes (including drugs and sleeping around), but nothing too detailed. Source: I received a complimentary copy through JustReadTours, which did not require a positive review. All opinions are my own.
Pretty sure this is Kara's best story yet. I adored Lacey and Victor and finally getting their full stories. This book was ah-mazing and I loved every minute of it. This book also has some of the funniest lines and scenes and Kara's books are know for her humor. Her humor is one of the things I loved best about this story(and all of Kara's stories actually). Kara's books are NOT to be missed and I can't recommend this one enough. Definitely one for my keeper shelf.
I received this book from the author and was not required to post a positive review. All thoughts are my own.
Start With Me has some characters and situations from other books that this author has written, however, it stands on its own nicely, as well.
Victor is a character who was definitely unlikable in Can’t Help Falling. I never thought I could see a believable redemption story for him, but I was wrong! The author wrote him an amazingly believable redemption story that I thoroughly enjoyed reading.
Victor is a man living with huge regrets, has really turned himself around, yet still can’t seem to prove to his brother that he has changed. I ended up really connecting with this character and wanting him to get that second chance that feels so elusive.
Lacey was an interesting character, too. It was enlightening to watch as she allowed Victor to see layers of herself and her background that she usually kept hidden and controlled from the rest of the world. She was a dependable and competent person, whose emotional wounds kept her from trusting in love or in believing that there was a God.
These two characters worked so well together. There was great banter, great chemistry, and plenty of angst to work through in this engaging novel.
(4.5 stars)
I read a copy of this book through Kindle Unlimited. All opinions are my own.
Readers will recognize characters from other books by Isaac, and will certainly enjoy catching upon what they’re up to.
I’m so glad this book is out; Isaac has quite a story about both her own life and the writing and release process of this book. That makes it all the more meaningful.
Any reference to Oxford is always a win in my book, and I selfishly wished the entire setting could have been there (I’ll just have to reread her other books!). Events here really happened one right after another; never a dull moment indeed for Victor or Lacey.
Isaac has produced a wonderful book with some powerful words on forgiveness and second chances. Excellent.
I received a copy of the book from the publisher. All opinions are my own.
This is a touching story of forgiveness and love. She knew him and remembered their first meeting; he didn’t think he knew her but there was just so much of his past he didn’t remember. It’s also a story of two people trying to correct the past and move forward with their lives, without getting caught in the swift currents of all their mistakes. Oh, the dynamics, when these two were around each other was so strong, it was almost comical because one thing after another kept happening. Will they ever survive all these events? We see things in their lives that are very relatable to us as readers. The relationships with friends and families are so real. When we can put ourselves in the character’s lives and understand the pains and joys, that’s what makes a book great! This author has done that! The author, Kara Isaac, is a master at bringing these characters to life. I could just picture them and their interactions. I’m so pleased she came out with this book. I’ve read a few other books of hers and have found I truly enjoy the way she spins her tales. Through it all there is a strong message of how God loves us and will be there for us, even when we make mistakes and feel unworthy. I highly recommend you read this book! It's a sweet story that will touch your heart!
Start with Me by Kara Isaac is a beautiful story about grace and forgiveness and redemption. It’s about two broken people that are drawn together, but have a somewhat tragic past. This is a powerful story of overcoming the past and moving towards the future. It’s also about a story of the power of true love. This is a fabulously written book that will take readers on a journey they will not regret reading for one minute.

Start With Me by Kara Isaac gave me a book hangover. I absolutely loved the story and stayed up way too late reading it. The novel snagged my attention at the beginning and I just had to see the characters’ journeys through to the end. With the lovely balance of romantic tension and character development, I couldn’t put it down.
Start With Me had so much heart. While there were a handful of laugh-out-loud moments, the novel tackled serious issues. Lacey deals with a dysfunctional family and personal issues. Victor has a history of poor choices, alcoholism, and much more. The author didn’t skimp on his mistakes or give him a magical pass where everything works out. Making Victor struggle with the natural consequences of his actions added authenticity to the novel. Start With Me also takes on gender equality in the workplace. It makes no apology for women in leadership roles, asks hard questions, and doesn’t give male insensitivity or ignorance a pass.
Start With Me by Kara Isaac integrates several characters from the author’s previous books, but still works as a stand-alone novel. Lacey and Victor’s backstory is supplied and I didn’t feel like I was missing anything in regards to them. However, I clearly was missing information in Lacey’s relationship with her cousin and girlfriends. Sounds like a good reason to go pick up Kara Isaac’s other novels! I recommend Start With Me by Kara Isaac to readers who enjoy contemporary romances with gritty situations and inspirational themes.
Disclosure of Material Connection: I was provided a copy of this book by the author or publisher. All opinions in this review are my own.
As soon as I saw that this book was getting published, I got excited. I saw the cover and knew I had to own it.
Every part of this story is so well put together. Lacey & Victor are incredibly complex characters. For those who have read Can’t Help Falling, you might not even like Victor at all. It’s the kind of skill this author has to turn someone completely on their head and present them back to the reader.
So many layers to uncover, this is a fantastic story and did not disappoint.
Just had that satisfied sigh, finishing Kara Isaac's newest novel❤️ I love seeing bad-boy Victor's redemption! Such a sweet story! It's better if you've read previous novels especially Can't Help Falling.
From cheeky commentary of life from inside Lacy’s head, to a few favorite settings, to the journey through the heart, Issac’s story is a wonderful clean romance that will make you laugh, smile, and wipe some satisfying tears. Best one yet, Kara!! (I was given a copy to review)
Welcome back Kara Issac! A beautiful romantic comedy with deep flawed characters that feel so real you'd swear they were real friends by the time you complete the book. This one is going on the "keep" shelf!
Thanks to Bellbird Press and JustRead Tours for the free review copy. All opinions are my own.
This story focuses one new characters with old favorites sprinkled in which I loved. Lacey and Victor both have been impacted by the decisions they have made in their past, which is how they end up competing for the same job when their companies merge.
I loved the premise of the merger and the unique way it brought the characters together. There’s nothing like the wilderness to show people if they are compatible or not. And then a wedding just adds more complexity to the potential relationship.
I really enjoyed the characters back stories. They were told in rich depth and detail. It made me become attached and only want the best for both of them. I also liked how the book featured sibling rivalries in adulthood. I feel like this is something that’s not highlighted often in books.
I thought the writing was wonderful. Isaac sure knows how to make her readers feel while reading her books and this ones no different.
I was totally captivated by this book. The story, the characters, the twists and turns... everything about this book was simply amazing and wonderful. I could literally feel what the characters were feeling; the pain, the loss, love... I greatly admired how Victor tried to turn his life around. The efforts he made were profound and very touching. I loved how he showed the skeptic Lacey what true love was even though his relationship with God was still new. Lacey was strong, determined, driven and a force to reckoned with. It was most spectacular to see how God and cared for her by placing Godly people in her path to always point her to Him.
My favorite part of this book was when Victor explained God's love and forgiveness to Lacey.
My book pulled at my heartstrings bringing to mind real life struggles and how God helps one triumph.
I received a copy of this book and this is my honest opinion.
Not feeling like you measure up is something that I think many of us can relate to, as well as family drama, and striving for perfection. It's all part of human nature, and in abundance in this novel, which is what makes Start With Me so relatable. I truly believe that everyone who reads this novel is going to find something of themselves within the pages, which I believe to be a wonderful and unique feature in a fiction.
The adventures and situations the characters find themselves in take the reader and the characters on quite the adventure, one that was fun to read and experience. I loved the vivid imagery, but what really shines off the pages are the characters, Lacy and Victor, their personalities, and the depth with which you get to know them. The character depth is incredible! Both Lacy and Victor have their own inward struggles, while trying to appear strong on the outside, and both are fighting to be better versions of themselves, while life continues to throw multiple punches, as it tends to do. You really grow to care for them both and hope for that happy ending.
There are twists in this book that caught me completely by surprise, which is normally hard to do, and kept the story fresh and interesting. The ending is gratifying, with each character luminous, showing the fact that even though life is messy, hard, and not always in the way you imagined, doesn't mean that there can't be a happy ending.
*I have voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author and/or publisher through JustRead Tours. All views and opinions are completely honest, and my own.
