I know many people find it difficult to get a not-so-positive review to a book they received for free, but I am not one of those people. Especially when it comes to something like cookbooks that come with such a heavy price point. I am all for anything with the tagline “Easy” or “5 Ingredients” or “30 Minutes” and on and on, but I also think if people are going to purchase a cookbook rather than simply Googling recipes, it should be one they plan on falling back on time and again. Unfortunately, this probably isn’t that cookbook. From teaching how to make things that are easily purchased in stores (maple flavored breakfast sausage) to recipes that simply aren’t great (chocolate chip cookies made more like a Hello Dolly with sweetened condensed milk but missing the delicious coconut) to meals your family is sure to complain about (plain chicken breast thrown in a 425 degree oven), this simply didn’t have many appetizing selections . . . . .

Not to mention someone who needs help figuring out how to turn leftover taco meat into nachos probably isn’t going to have devices like immersion blenders or spiralizers in their cupboard.

No food pic because I didn’t want to make anything from this. Here’s my “quarantine station” instead . . . .

I usually don't mind cooking with a lot of ingredients but sometimes it is fun to do things a bit simpler. The Quick and Easy 5-Ingredient Cookbook is the perfect cookbook to have for this reason.
The recipes are for 30 minutes and you can have dinner in a flash!
In the book you have:
Chapter 1 where there are tips and you learn how to use the book.
Chapter 2 has Breakfasts, Oatmeal with variations, Maple Turkey Breakfast Patties, Breakfast Muffins, and Sheet Pan French Toast.
Chapter 3 is Soups and Salads, my favorite section. I love soups and I have Mom's Homemade Tomato Soup bookmarked.
Chapter 4 is the section for Vegan and Vegetarian Main dishes
Chapter 5 is Poultry and Seafood, I like the poultry section as I am not such a fan of fish although the Foil Packet Fish Fillets and Tomatoes look good.
Chapter 6 is Beef and Pork
Chapter 7 is Snacks and Sides. A good variety here from Guacamole to Roasted Lemon Asparagus
Chapter 8 Deserts. My other favorite section, The Mini Cheesecakes will definitely be getting made in this house.
Lastly, Chapter 9 is the section for Spice Blends, Sauces, and Dressings. A very important chapter.
So looking through this book, I found a lot of recipes that I will definitely be trying. Simple, only 5 ingredients and that is what makes the book perfect!

This cookbook would make a most excellent gift for someone who is just starting off cooking for themselves, or for someone you are trying to encourage to cook for themselves; either because you are tired of cooking for them, or you want them to break their fast food addiction. Besides the simple type recipes, Eileen Kelly includes all types of food tips about buying, storing, measuring, freezing, defrosting, leftovers, etc. (Her advice about how long refrigerated leftovers can be eaten is a bit on the super safe side, however.:)

Plus, there are instructions on how to make your own seasoned salt, basil pesto, house salad dressing, homemade dijonnaise and brown sugar-soy sauce. I'm definitely going to try that last one because all my homemade soy or teriyaki sauce concoctions are never very good; and all the ones online have too many ingredients I don't have. In addition, I'm definitely going to try the sheet pan french toast that you make in the oven. While the book has some vegan and vegetarian main courses, there are a lot of meat ones, too. (So, anyone who is offended by meat eating probably wouldn't embrace this book.)

Ms. Kelly has organized the recipes and everything else is a very clear, uncluttered way. Pictures are limited, but I'm not sure why cooks even need pictures. Maybe it's a psychological thing or something. The food is going to look like whatever it's going to look like when you finish anyway. Now, the one thing I thought was missing in this book were instructions on how to peel a boiled egg. Strange, since I'm sure Ms. Kelly must realize there are those beginner cooks who have no idea how to peel an egg. Even experienced cooks can have problems peeling eggs. Also, deviled eggs only last two days in the fridge? Yes, they are usually gobbled down within two days, but, if by some miracle there are still some left, they can be quite good and safe to eat after two days, in my less cautious opinion.

Quick and Easy 5-Ingredient Cookbook is a tutorial cookbook and recipe collection aimed at easy, fast, and good food without lots of ingredients. The recipes included can be prepared in 30 minutes or less with 5 main ingredients (not including seasonings, water, oil, cooking spray, etc). Due out 14th April 2020 from Callisto on their Rockridge Press imprint, it's 108 pages and will be available in paperback and ebook formats (ebook available now). It's worth noting that the ebook format has a handy interactive table of contents as well as interactive links. I've really become enamored of ebooks with interactive formats lately.

The introduction includes a very good overview over basic kitchen equipment and ingredients. There's also a subchapter with food safety and handling information.

The recipes have their ingredients listed bullet style in a sidebar. Measurements are given in US standard only. Special tools and ingredients are also listed, along with yields and cooking directions. Most of the ingredients are easily sourced at any moderately well stocked grocery store. Nutritional information is included in the footer at the end of the recipes and includes calories, fat, sodium, carbs, fibre, sugar, protein.Tips and variations on each recipe are included in a text box at the end. Special dietary comments (dairy-free, freezer friendly, gluten-free, nut free, etc).

The book also includes a short author bio, and a metric conversion chart, but lacks any index or general ingredients index.

My main quibble with the book is that the recipes are mostly not photographed. There are some photos, and they're clear and attractive, but they only represent about 5% of the recipes included in the book. It is, however, a very well written book for anyone who needs

Four stars. This would make a superlative selection for busy cooks or a housewarming gift for a newly-fledged first apartment dweller.

Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.

I love making good food with just a few ingredients. I don’t like complex recipes much for my everyday cooking. I don’t have hours to spend in the kitchen anymore nor do I want too much anymore. My family doesn’t eat out much and quick meals are a plus for my family.

This is a nice cookbook for beginners. The recipes ingredients are basic and the recipes are simple to make. Also I think veteran cookers will like the simplicity of the recipes.

The five ingredients do not include spices and herbs, oils, butters, and cooking sprays. For the beginner it has a nice section covering the basic kitchen tools, and some nice to have tools but not necessary. There is a chapter that focuses on what to have on hand covering everything from the pantry, freezer, refrigerator, and fresh produce section with foods to keep on hands. I thought this is particular helpful for someone who is just moving out and getting into the rhythm of cooking for themselves. This is a beneficial section to help you save money and not eat out all the time.

The recipes have several tips throughout with suggestions to add to the recipe if you have more time. There are also lots of cooking tips and shortcuts throughout. Have you ever wondered how long a recipe will store? Many of the recipes will give you storage information. Also the recipes are tagged if they are Gluten-Free, Dairy-Free, Nut-Free, No-Cook, and other tags.

All meals are covered from Breakfast, Snacks and Sides, Desserts, Spice Blends, Sauces, and Dressings. Then the recipes are broken down by Soups and Salads, Vegan and Vegetarian Mains, Poultry and Seafood, and Beef and Pork.

Some recipes that caught my eye are: Creamy Macaroni and Broccoli Salad, Apple Cinnamon Oatmeal, Taco Tomato Soup, and Mexican Stuffed Peppers.

This is a great cookbook for someone who is moving out on their own for the first time.

I received a copy of this product from Callisto Publisher's in exchange for my honest review. I was not required to write a positive review.

A great cookbook for beginners, all of the recipes in this cookbook are simple enough to be done by anyone.

Nutritional facts on each recipe: Yes
Photos: Limited
Variety of Recipes: meals for all times of day, desserts and spices and sauces, etc. There are a few that are vegetarian and vegan.
Number of recipes: 65

Bonus materials: the recipes have tips (either for variations or storage). Additionally, there's a great section on the tools to have on hand as well as a very thorough list of things that are staples (part of what makes it so good for beginners).

I thought the book was well done. I thought the Author did an excellent job providing a diverse range of options from meats to meatless, as well as appetizers and desserts. I found the recipes to be easy follow with basic ingredients-nothing complicated. i thought the 'variations' were an excellent way to offer even more diverse options.
Thank you Rockridge Press & NetGalley the opportunity to review this delightful book.

I am always on the hunt for the next best cookbook but this one is maybe too simple and maybe that is because its 5 ingredients in 30 minutes. I was not in love with the book and it doesnt read too well on a kindle (this could be because it was an advance copy so there is no bad marks for it) It is simple food. I think if your family of 4 eats simply this book will score higher for you. I want to make something that wows your mouth and this just didnt help with that.

This cookbook was fine, if not a little mundane. There’s nothing revolutionary here but the recipes are all easy to follow. They all contain ingredients that most kitchens have, which is a bonus. This one wasn’t necessarily for me but those looking to start cooking, or looking for quick recipe ideas, may enjoy it. My thanks to the publisher for sending this review copy my way in exchange for my honest review!

I received a complimentary copy.

The book is perfect if you do not have a lot of allergies and want to stay with healthier eating choices. If you do not have a lot of time and want more basic recipies this is going to be a great help.

This is a must have for people who love to make large batches of food with different variations. Very few cookbooks give you as many variations on recipes as what this author does. One of my biggest complaints about recipe books is very few variations and this author goes above and beyond with it. Biggest key I got from this book was freeze what you don’t use! This is a must for some easy meal prep since all you need to do is go to the freezer and reheat.

What did I like? Variations....some of the recipes have multiple. This is a great thing since you can make a batch of meat and have four or five different variations. It’s never the same meal twice. There are so many tidbits in this book it’s insane. From freezing to making your own spices. Just loved it. The author also has a food blog so you can follow her online, which I thought was amazing.

Would I recommend or buy? Yes, I just love cookbooks and you can never have enough. This was such a good read. I loved all the tidbits and variations even though many of the recipes were regular kitchen recipes like omelets.

Thoughts for the author? Thanks so much to the publisher for an ARC to peak at and this review is just my opinion. I really enjoyed your cookbook so I’m definitely going to subscribe to your blog. Five star cookbook! Thanks.
