Troya has given up her mythology geek ways to focus on pursuing her nursing degree. She’s made weird, but fierce friends in the growing city of Ontonagon, in the four years since she arrived as an orphaned, wounded teenager. She’s managing to make something of herself, despite the loss of her real family. But it seems like the universe has other plans for her.
Weird visions, hallucinations that make her closest friends seem like monsters…probably just an over the top reaction to all the stress in her life. (Either that, or it’s a brain tumor.) When a creepy run-in with a monster during her clinical rotations at the hospital threatens to make her fail out of school, Troya thinks it can’t possibly get any worse.
But she’s wrong. So wrong.
The world Troya has known all her life is ripped away in one weird night, and even two hot roommates-turned-lovers might not be enough to salvage things. Not when her entire existence is overshadowed by the memory of a dark prince bathed in blood—and the pain that drove her to forget everything.
*The Gods and Demons series is a spin off from the Gesa’s Menagerie series. While it can be read on it’s own, reading the Menagerie series first will provide more depth to the world and characters.
Author’s Note: I was tired of reading the same old thing over and over again in reverse harem. Sick of all alpha male and fainting female all the time—and desperate to be able to tell the male characters apart—I try my best to infuse some variety into my stories (in gender expression, personality types, sexuality, etc.) You’ve been warned.
Story length definitions: Flash fiction: 200-2,000 words Short story: 1,500-7,500 words Novelette: 7,500-15,000 words *Novella: 15,000-40,000 words* Novel: 50,000 words and up.
*The Gods and Demons books are NOVELLAS of between 40,000-45,000 words. *This is a series. There will be unresolved plot threads at times/ occasional cliff hangers. This first book DOES have a cliffhanger (though some plot arcs are completed as well). I generally will not do that thing that some authors do where you get an incomplete book that just stops in the middle. Some arcs will be completed or complete for “now,” but there will be lead-ins to the next book in the series. *Do NOT read this series if you are easily offended. The series will contain: mentions of past trauma (of ANY kind), adult language (that’s cursing kids, lots of it), and sexual content (possibly including male/female, male/male, female/female, male/male/female, female/female/male and any other combination you can think of.)
Sometimes our greatest strengths come from our deepest challenges. I write magic and romance, starring a cast of creatures with feathers, fins, and teeth. My books include paranormal romance, urban fantasy, and fantasy romance--with the occasional steampunk or alien story thrown in just for kicks. My pan heart firmly believes love is love, so you'll see straight, LGBTQIA, monogamous, reverse harem, and poly relationships in my work. My favorite theme is overcoming our inner demons and the insecurities that hold us back. I also advocate for self-development and mental health and dabble in non-fiction as time allows. I love the outdoors and still hope to be abducted by fae! (I may have more in common with my characters than I care to admit.)
I love to hear from readers!

While I enjoyed the cast introduced at the end of Gesa's Menagerie series, the follow-up to Troya's developing relationship 4 years later didn't seem very believable to me.
21-year-old Troya is currently a nursing student and roommates with Rhys the vampire and Chike the mer-siren in Osion's apartments above the bookstore, but she has not been introduced to the supernatural world yet and thinks that everyone and Gesa's pride are all mundane humans. She is best friends with Rhys and Chike and has a crush on them, but thinks that they are out of her league as she is plus-size and Chike is supposedly gay.
The relationship quickly escalates with Chike showing his interest in her and reveals himself to be pansexual instead, and Rhys following along with his secret attraction soon after. It seemed very sudden, and I did not get any impression that they were actually into her before showing off all their seduction moves and falling into bed together. Rhys also seemed to act more like a teenager rather than an ancient vampire.
Additionally, apparently Troya only met Derek White, her supposedly past life soulmate, less than a handful of times in passing. It seemed like an odd choice for Derek not to introduce himself and take part of her life so that she'd be familiar with him and slowly fall back in love with him.
I loved seeing Gesa's twins grow up, and Kai being a bad-ass protecting everyone in the pool while the world literally went to hell when all the supernaturals were unpredictably revealed to humans. While I liked the variety in cast in this new series and I'm glad the Troya, Chike, and Rhys ended up together, I didn't find their relationships very compelling for a good romance read.
I am interested enough to read the next book to seeing how Troya deals with the restoration of her past memories, and how Derek and Orion plan on ingratiating themselves to Troya to rejoin their past life's relationships. -------- Ratings - completed series: #1 Fates, Fins, and Fangs (this book): ★★★☆☆ #2 Wishes, Wings, and Woes: ★★★☆☆ #3 Horns, Hugs, and Hunger: ★★★★☆ #4 Demons, Danger, and Demigods: ★★★☆☆
Another fantastic first book from Kaye Draper. This series is a spin-off of her Menagerie series, and it does show. Troya is a nursing student, living with two male roommates in the apartment over Gesa's(Oisin's) bookshop. She was made an orphan four years ago when her parents died in a car wreck, and now she helps pay her Aunt's hospital bills while going to college. Troya has always been fascinated by myths and mystics, but when she starts seeing things that can't be real, and getting dragged into strange visions, she's worried that she might be the one needing hospital care.
Like Draper's last few series, this is a polyamorous story, with at least one male character who doesn't quite fit in the box of stereotypical masculinity. Troya also represents the girls with a little more padding than society sees as acceptable. Very cool to see.
I definitely recommend anyone into fantasy and unusual romances to read this book!
(NOTE: I couldn't find this book when I searched, and it isn't on Kaye Draper's page, so I added it manually. All information is copied from the Amazon page.)
This book was amazing! There aren’t enough words, and also words are hard right now because that cliffhanger has me aching to turn to the next page since I have the box set! Troy(a) is a young woman struggling with school and work and two super cute roommates. In this book, we see them quickly cross the line from best friends to oh so spicy lovers! It was so sweet and I love that they had a solid friendship foundation to start from. Troy is struggling with weird visions or hallucinations, meanwhile we learn from the characters around her that all is not quite as it seems! While there is mystery here, it isn’t too angsty and the fast pacing has you feeling well assured everything will be alright (or will be entertaining to say the least!). The detail in the character descriptions and the settings were so immersive and made the story come to life! This was especially appreciated in the spice. Yum! Okay so it also says this series can stand alone, but will best be enjoyed after reading other works. I haven’t caught up on the other works yet, and I’m doing just fine with these characters. That said, I do plan on reading the other series, and I’m kicking myself for getting hooked on this series because I do feel like I’m spoiling some fun pieces for myself here (like who ends up with whom, who has what powers, etc.). I’m too far committed now though! I’m very excited to circle back to the other series and see these wonderful folks live their own adventure. For technical detail, we have first person perspective from our leading lady, with some third person perspective from one fella in particular interspersed. We have a polyamorous relationship (a tiny bit of MM with the promise of more in future books), and other queer and poly characters (we love to see it!). There is a steel last minute cliffhanger, but it is a completed series so we’ll be fine. On to the next!
I love everything by this author and was excited to pick up another completed series. This book was everything I love and more!
I tore through the Gesa’s Menagerie series while home sick a few months ago, so it seems appropriate that I would start this next series while working full-time from home during a pandemic. This novella was a wonderful afternoon of escape, full of intriguing characters and excitement.
The author states that this can be read without the previous series, but I think any reader would get more out of it with that appropriate background context (and the other series is amazing, so do yourself a favor and read it anyway). That being said, it’s immediate from the first page that this is NOT a repeat of Gesa’s Menagerie, from the main character to the greater story line.
Troya is a refreshing heroine who is both down to earth and accepting of the sudden strangeness in her life. Draper gets epic bonus points for portraying a “plus-size” heroine who is comfortable in her body and recognizes her strengths while also acknowledging the real-world bias against her. Because the love story aspect of this book involves characters who have been friends for years, Chike and Rhys are never portrayed as men who are interested in Troya “despite” her size, or any such nonsense. Their attraction to her whole self is obvious and sincere.
If anything, the love story element to this new reverse harem series takes second place to the other interesting drama happening in Troya’s life. Everything we knew about this world from the Gesa’s Menagerie books is promptly up-ended, leaving me anxious to learn what happens next. Even for Derek-effing-White.
As always I am the weird one, who starts off with spin off books first. However, it gives me the advantage in rating as I have no expectations or impressions from previous series. This book was fantastic! It is short which is a shame, yet at the same time, while fast paced, it has just the right amount of world building and descriptions to make it feel wholesome. If there is any disadvantage in starting with spin off series, is that I couldn't make sense of Gesas menagerie. For those who go in without any previous knowledge, it is confusing who is part of it and how big of a crowd it is. For example, Kai- kraken, at some point i thought author mixed up characters names and supe type. Took me several books to make sense and realise Gesa is not the only female with harem. So, that is a drawback. Other than that- I loved the characters, loved that they actually talked about stuff, not going around creating miscommunication problems. In short, I loved the whole story.
Since I don't normally write reviews unless I have something specific to say, here's the break down of how I rate my books...
1 star... This book was bad, so bad I may have given up and skipped to the end. I will avoid this author like the plague in the future.
2 stars... This book was not very good, and I won't be reading any more from the author.
3 stars... This book was ok, but I won't go out of my way to read more, But if I find another book by the author for under a dollar I'd pick it up.
4 stars... I really enjoyed this book and will definitely be on the look out to pick up more from the series/author.
5 stars... I loved this book! It has earned a permanent home in my collection and I'll be picking up the rest of the series and other books from the author ASAP.
Brief story base in the mundane world and then the paranormal world erupts. No mm yet but it’s on the way. Heroine is plus-sized and nice and straight-forward with an obscured background. Her men are hella-sexy. Some interaction with Gesa’s harem. Will be buying the next in the series.
I read this series as soon as I finished Gesa’s Menangerie, I loved it. You get very attached to the characters and even though you’re already drawn into the world this series enhances it all. I adored Orion. These books are well written and not predictable or overdone. Kaye Draper has now become one of my fave authors.
I love that this story has such an interesting female character that gets mixed up with gods and war. Troya is Gesa's good friend and she finally has her eyes opened to the magic happening around her. It was a pretty rough way to learn though.
Fast paced and filled with mythical beings this book kept my attention all the way through. With the ending I am left with the need to read the next in the series.
I really enjoyed Gesa’s Menagerie and this book is the first in a spin-off series. You could probably understand everything in this book without reading the first series, but it will make it much a richer and more entertaining experience if you have.
Troya is 21 next month and she lives with two guys, Chilke, her best gay friend, and Rhys the blond Adonis who teaches art. Troya is friends with Gesa and her clan and Chilke was practically adopted by them as a teenager when his family cast him out for being different. Troya’s parents are both dead and the aunt she lived with initially has been sick. She’s training to be a nurse, but as a teenager she was passionate about myths and legends of gods and goddesses. Despite her passion she is unaware that she is surrounded by beings from those legends.
This Reverse Harem book tells us a little more about the wealthy and powerful Derek White and why he’s so protective of Troya. We get insight into Orion, his assistant, but it’s just hints. This is the first book in the series and there are already several other books out. The author tends to write pretty quickly, but the books are just a little bit short and they always leave me wanting more.
I’m so glad the author decided to explore this world more thoroughly and that we get to visit old friends and see what life is like for them in their settled relationship. I’m also really looking forward to finding out FINALLY about Derek White.
