Michael Reagan writes a book about how we need to return to the ideas and principles of Ronald Reagan, his father. He wrote this book in 1997, a mere twenty seven years ago. And yet the most outstanding thing is that nothing has changed since then. Almost there decades later, America is fading further and further. The shining City on a Hill that Ronald Reagan envisioned feels further and further away. Michael Reagan uses this book to outline what needs to be done to bring back the country to be the shining City on a hill that Winthrop, Lincoln, Reagan and many others throughout history have envisioned the country.

The city is to be built on faith, family, safety and economic common sense. While some of this book does feel like a polemic in defense of President Reagan's viewpoints, polices and more, I think that works because of the things that Reagan envisioned could easily pave the way for a beautiful, safe and Godly country that America was always intended to be.

The most interesting aspect of this book is the commentary on the Republican party. Not only does Michael Reagan give a wonderful history of the Republican party and what it has stood for and what it continues to stand for but also provides a great commentary on the week Republican leadership of the 1990s. Looking into the future, it is clear that this week Republican leadership continued until 2016. This book, in my opinion would be perfect for today with in an updated edition that address the modern political climate in the light of everything that has all happened in this crazy election cycle. Although like I said earlier it feels like nothing has changed since Michael Reagan first wrote these words in 1997 so perhaps an updated version wouldn't require much. The ideals that Ronald Reagan strove for in the 1980s are ideals that we must continue to strive for in 2024.

Michael Reagan does a good job of building on his Dad's policies as President. He quotes President Reagan in every chapter. He also tells a couple of things from his childhood I had not read before. If you are a Reagan fan you will enjoy this book.
