Who’s the dragon going to call for a ghost problem? Me. I don’t normally deal with nasty ghosts, but when Nix needs help, I’m the only one qualified. His dragons are under attack, and it’s up to me to stop it. But Nix isn’t making it easy. He seems determined to hate me because I’m a necromancer, and he wants nothing to do with the attraction smoldering between us.
This specter isn’t a random haunting, and its connected to both Nix and me. We’re going to have to work together to defeat it, but if Nix finds out how I’m connected, any trust I’ve built with him will go up in smoke.
Can a necromancer and a dragon find a way to make it work? With evil spirits abounding it’s more than just our lives at stake, and if we fail, death is only the beginning of our suffering.
Once again - no description of the main characters. Mikhail Baranov has black hair and somewhere in the middle of the book we find out that he is much smaller than the other MC, Nix. Nix has green eyes.
As for what the characters wear, Mikhail wears a coat and has a messenger bag. Nix has track suits. Later we are told that Mikhail also has 2 pairs of underwear, two pants and two shirts. That's it folks! That's all we get! But - damn, there are all kinds of details on things that don't matter.
Just like the first book, this one needs editing. Badly. There are typos, missing words and repetitions of the same word within a sentence or a paragraph. Characters often highjack conversations dumping too much information we can easily do without.
By the way, Baranov is a Russian last name. Hungarian version should be Barany. Unless, of course, his father was Russian, but that was never clarified.
Editing issues aside, I am actually enjoying this book.
I loved this story. It is the kind that you can identify with the characters and immerse yourself in the story. Very well written and characters to win the heart make this book a must read.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
hate and anger... love and happiness... paranormal activity and a poltergiest that is super interesting.. plus dragons of course and an amazing mage.. this was all around an action packed and fun story. i liked it
WOW! I LOVED this book! It is entertaining, scorching HOT and full of surprises. I got sucked into the story right from the start, it is fast paced and really, really GOOD. All characters are likable, especially Mikhail (I knew he'd be a great guy!) and it was a real pleasure to see him finally happy.
This is a second book in the "Dragon magic" series and even though it can be read as a standalone I would recommend to read it in order to fully understand and enjoy it. There are some plot twists so the story is not predictable. It is full of magic, ghosts and dragons (obviously). It is enemies to lovers kind of a book and relationship between Mikhail and Nix is absolutely AMAZING. They have their reasons to dislike each other and yet the attraction between them is strong enough they can't help themselves.
I can't wait to read more stories (maybe it is time for Rezzek?)!
* I was gifted an ARC copy in exchange for an honest review *
So MC #1’s brother killed MC #2’s brother and is now back from the dead as the poltergeist harassing MC #2’s dragon weyr. BUT MC #1 doesn’t actually tell MC #2 he’s related to the man who is trying as hard as he can to ruin MC #2’s life until AFTER MC #2 has claimed MC #1. Soooooooo... I have some problems with that, hence the low rating.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
This is marginally better than the first one. The characters were sympathetic and the plot was a bit more complex. Again the relationships were not interesting and how the main characters got to love is not altogether believable.
Independent reviewer for Gay Romance Reviews, I was gifted my copy of this book, via Bookfunnel.
This is book 2 in theDragon Magic series, and while it would HELP, I don't think it's really necessary to have read book one, Ashes of Memory. There is some reference to that book, but nothing that is needed here. But I really enjoyed that book, so maybe you should read it :-)
Mikhail is a necromancer, he deals mostly with the dead. When a weyr calls for help, Mikhail goes, and finds himself facing a far darker emeny than he first thought. Nix is leader of the weyr and they are very closed off to the rest of the world. For good reason, too. They hate necromancers especially. Having to call on one to help them, causes Nix great pain, but his people come first. Can Mikhail and Nix save the weyr, without killing each other?
Same as book one, very different, and I read this one in one sitting, and its some 240 pages.
Nix has reason to hate the necromancers, mages in general, but he does come round to Mikhail, when he sees that he really is trying to help. Mikhail wants to walk at the agression off the dragon, but he can see that Nix is trying to bite his tongue and be more accomodating.
The poltergeist that is haunting the weyr turns out to be far closer to them both than they first thought, and has massed a huge amount of power to be doing what he is. What the end game of said poltergeist is, is not clear, and true to the way that is fast becoming of these books, things don't become clear straight away.
I LOVED the little hints you get along the way, that make you think, and try to plot ahead, but mostly getting it wrong (well I get it wrong!) I loved that things come sorta out of left field for Nix and Mikhail. Attraction is obvious right from the start, yes, but feelings? They come outta nowhere for them both. Me too, although, you KNOW it's coming, you do, but they still pop up out of the ether.
Loved Gabby! She was a surprise and made me laugh in many places, but also, I cried along with Mikhail.
While, clearly, these books are not finished, this one doesn't lead nicely into the next one like book one does for book 2 so I have no idea, NOT a clue. . . well. . . .maybe a teeny tiny clue WHO might star in the net one, but not what that might be about. So, please Mr Bates and Ms Haven, get a writing!
I liked the first book in this series, but I love ths one! Mikhail and Nix are the perfect example of the enemies to lovers story, and I must say for the first eight chapters of the book Nix felt like my enemy as well. Talk about an unlikeable character. Nix's father Roland is the leader of the dragons in the weyr, but he is ill and Nix is acting in his place without the full support of the advisory council. Under normal circumstances, this lack of unanimity might not be a problem, but the weyr is under attack from a murderous poltergeist. Nix does manage to convince enough of the council to pay to bring in a mage to rid the weyr of the spirit, but his treatment of Mikhail is deliberately rude from the start. In fact, his stubborn resentment of the man called to help them endangers everyone and is frustrating as all get out for the reader. However, in chapter eight we learn some things about both Nix and Mikhail and their families that make Nix's behaviour completely understandable and we see him begin to open up to Mikhail both personally and with information about the weyr and Roland's health that will possibly lead to a solution of the problem. As they work together, the two men grow more and more attracted to each other and eventually take a step that will either save the weyr or lead to its destruction. Just when you think there might be a light at the end of the tunnel, however, a secret Mikhail has kept from Nix threatens everything. You now have to wonder, will they be able to stand against the evil when their relationship seems broken, will Nix have the courage to do what is necessary to become true leader of the weyr and is there an even greater threat waiting than the one they face here? By this time in the book, it was 1 a.m. and there was no way I was going to quit reading until I had my answers. I finished the book around 2:30 a.m. and the payoff was even better than I hoped. There is one heck of a final battle, a reunion that will necessitate a tissue or two, a ringing demonstration of the power of love and friendship and then, just a reminder that while this battle has been won, there is a wider war still going on outside the weyr and across the country. Oh man, I cannot wait for the next entry in this series! I almost wish I had started reading it after it was all done so I could just binge read right on through to see how everything ends when all the books are finished.
I enjoyed the second book in this series about dragons and mages more than the first.
Content warnings include: unprotected sex (without proper lube), possession, death, patricide, mentions of torture.
The plot was only vaguely connected to the one from book1, which surprised me - I thought it would be building up an overarching storyline, but instead it kind of directly denied having any connection whatsoever. Still, more evil is definitely brewing in the background for the series to continue.
A bit more worldbuilding was done this time around, especially regarding paranormal history in this setting, which I liked, but I still would have enjoyed more. I particularly found that the two kinds of magic we've seen in the series so far, necromancy and esper, which is mind related, were pretty similar for two fields that seem so fundamentally different.
The writing was well and the book was easy to read, though there were a few unfortunate word choices. While I enjoyed Mikhail and Nix as characters a bit more than the protagonists of book1, Ashes of Memory, I still wasn't the most engaged in the plot. Overall it felt like something I've read before.
I received an ARC and reviewed honestly and voluntarily.
I hate your kind. So why am I so attracted to you?
What a great second book in the Dragon Magic series. It picks up where book one ends. This time there is a vengeful poltergeist; a rogue, if dead, necromancer. There is hatred, slow understanding, tolerance, determination, courage, and unexpected love. I couldn't put it down! Nix's weyr hates all mages, especially necromancers. But when a vengeful poltergeist starts killing his dragons , Nix has no choice but to call upon one for help. He never intends on falling for & claiming him. Mikhail knows he isn't welcome at the weyr. Even after saving it's council, he is barely tolerated. Nix & the weyr have plenty of misconceptions about necromancers. As Mikhail tries to solve the mystery & protect the weyr, he will also have to enlighten Nix. And at some point, he will have to reveal his secret. They say opposites attract. The attraction between Nix & Mikhail is as intense as it inevitable. Join them on their journey. Share their hopes, fears, and love. Together with loyal friends, they will face the enemy & learn the ultimate truth: love transcends everything, even death. You will love this book. This ending leaves you hanging. I need to see what happens next. Book three can't get here fast enough! This book contains adult themes and language, mm sex and is intended for mature readers only.
This is a absolutely fascinating MM shifter romance with an “enemies to lovers” undertones & I really enjoyed reading it. The character are interesting & quite likable but at times are inclined to be quite confrontation even though they have good chemistry between them. The plot is suspenseful & is filled with unpredictable situations. There is good scene descriptions & world building. There is: a desperate dragon shifter (Nix Emberin) comes into contact with a hated necromancer & mage (Mikhail Baranov) when his weir & himself comes under attack from vengeful spirits, a ghostly friend (Gabriella aka Gabby), drama, intrigue, action, adventure, suspense, twists & turns, magic, necromancers, mages, humans, dragon shifters, poltergeists, mystery, adventure, action, magic, secrets, family issues, trust issues, intense dislike/hatred, violence, conflict, evil, sarcasm, verbal conflict, attitude issues, attractions, indecision, research, investigations, discovery, confrontations, self-sacrifice, heartache, a claiming, bonding, admittance, family issues, challenges, devious plans, astral traveling, ghostly assistance, happiness, steamy scenes, contentment, love & a hard-earned, satisfying conclusion with a interesting ending.
Necromancy carries such a misnomer; at least in this story.
Necromancy is about love. Love for those who seek peace. Nix is the dragon in waiting of his weyr and that weyr is cursed with a poltergeist who has caused the deaths of 3 of their enclave. At least that's what everyone believes. Mikhail has been hired to get rid of this poltergeist but upon arriving he knows this isn't a poltergeist but a necromancer seeking revenge through causing innocence deaths. This is a story delving into what this author interprets a necromancer's purpose is in the afterlife and it's not a scary purpose. The relationship connection between Mikhail and this necromancer is at the heart of the plot. A light touch has been added in this story and that touch is Gabby, Mikhail's conduit to the Underworld. She lends such a fun aspect to this story even though her life and afterlife is a sad tragedy. The journey Mikhail must submit himself to into the world of Purgatory is really quite dark and intense. I really liked collaborative work between Aiden Bates and Jill Haven in this book #2 of the Dragon Magic series and have willing given this review for the ARC I received.
I am addicted to paranormal romance and even though I wasn't able to read the first one, I loved this one. Nix is a dragon next in line to be Alpha, since he father's health is failing. Mikhail is a highly skilled necromancer and has answered a call for help removing a ghost. When he arrives, he is met with such hostility that he doesn't deserve but he's serious about his craft and feels an obligation to help any way he can. He has a ghost friend, Gabby, that is hilarious! Some of the things she says to him (because no one else can hear her) makes him downright blush. Nix is prepared to foist Mikhail off on someone else but doesn't. We find out that they had been plagued by a rogue necromancer and they killed him. Now things start making sense to Mikhail. The longer they are together and Nix sees how dedicated Mikhail is to getting rid of this entity and how much it takes out of him he begins to regret the way they have been treating him. This book has more twists and turns than a roller coaster and it definitely kept me on the edge of my seat. There is betrayal, understanding, romance, fear, heartbreak, redemption and forgiveness. This was well worth reading and I will read it again. I requested an advanced reader copy from Booksprout and am under no obligation to leave this review.
Wow what can i say, this story line and series between Aiden bates and Jill Haven is really starting to heat up. It really is engaging and... what i love about it is that you cant predict whats going to happen next...intrigue, suspence it has them both. But i do have to admit to the fact that at first i didnt like Nixs character, although given the circumstances i can understand his a bit of rudness but he did win me over, with his leadership qualities and love for his mate. As for Mikhail, well i loved his character in the very first story and i thought him such a wonderful young man. Such talent. And a great mind. With this series im going to try not to give any spoilers because they are books you have to read and enjoy, i know you will just love the characters like i do.
I can honestly say the D&D gamer in me is cheering loudly an jumping up an down in a frenzy because she thinks this would make a great campaign. That being said I'm absolutely giddy this book is awesome. Nix and his weyr are being attacked by something or someone they can't comprehend or fight. But Nix and his people have been taught to hate magic but especially necromancers. Mikhail knew before he ever stepped in Emberwood weyr that he wouldn't be welcome with up arms. But as you journey through all the twist and turns this story has just like a (dungeon) yeap I said it. The best part is Nix putting his suspicions aside an to see Mikhail for him and not for the magic class he is.

Sometimes you are more powereful than expected. Nix spends a lot of time in an anxious state. He is not afraid to let the Council know he can walk away from the weyr, if they don't believe in him. He is fighting unseen, unknown enemies and it's a bit unnerving. Mikhail is the necromancer sent to help Nix! This is another amazing adventure. The story starts out with a little conflict with Mikhail and Nix positioning them selves trying to finalize their roles. They go through major challenges that darn near break them, but they grow stronger. Can they put aside their prejudices to work together? Do the keep their secrets or share them? Does Nix hold onto his leadership? Does the Council step up and deliver their support? Is Mikhail welcomed? Excellent second story. Excellent follow through. Well done! I received an ARC from Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I think I like this book a little more than the first one in this series. I wasn't confused on the relationship of the two main characters in this book. Nix and Mikhail's first meeting was kind of hostile so I thought...definitely enemies to lovers...LOL. It was great...their banter back in forth...Mikhail's ghost friend Gabby was hilarious. The built up to their mating was intense..that fist kiss took them both by surprise(which really broke the ice between the two) feelings and attraction started to develop...it was entertaining. I'm glad they worked through their issues and worked together to get rid of the current evil that was terrorizing Nix weyr. But it seems that there is still more adventures to come in this series...

The Emberwood clan was having trouble with a poltergeist called Rav who took Pendrig 10 years earlier, but Nix and Pendrig’s father burned him up and he ended up in Tartarus. Then he came back to take his revenge on the people that had sent him there. So while his father was dying Nix sent for someone to get rid of the poltergeist, Mikhail showed but they were upset because they had to call a necromancer for help when one took Pendrig’s life. Mikhail figured out that it was his brother Ivan that was causing the problems but he did what he could to keep him out but it didn’t work. Then Nix and Mikhail mated before he told Nix and he didn’t know if he could forgive Mikhail but he did, they finally got rid of Ivan so that was a good thing. Can’t wait for the next book!
4.5 stars!! Basically a 5 star read for me, except I had to knock off half a star only because the MC’s loved each other after two days and mated so quickly. Luckily, it did not FEEL like insta love or I wouldn’t have liked it as much.
To think I almost didn’t try this book bc of so many other cheesy paranormal mm romance books out there. I have really been in a rut trying to find books similar to Jex Lane and Ariana Nash’s books to no avail.
This book highly impressed me and I am a hard critic. The world and magical realm were so creative and exciting!
Definitely give this book a read if you are a fan of Jex Lane or Ariana Nash or love dragons, shifters, or mm paranormal romance!
Nix and Mikhail are an interesting combination. Mikhail is everything Nix hates being a mage and necromancer but a haunting that gets out of control makes him to ask for a favour that results to meeting Mikhail. When those two are together sparks fly and they contradict almost in everything but little by little they became each other world and they have to confront old beliefs and Nix father to be together. Mikhail saves Nix's life and together they fight their enemy, Mikhail brother. In defeating him the truth he learns is a disturbing one that makes them realise something bigger and more dangerous awaits them. It was interesting and amazing read and can't wait to see what happens next.
It was worth the read. It was intriguing and intense in parts. I Loved Nix and Mikhail and how they dealt with each other. Nix grew so much as a person through out the book. We watched him move beyond prejudice and personal feelings. In my opinion he became a better person. Mikhail had his own issues to overcome. Watching them fall in love was heartwarming. They worked through a decent amount of obstacles to get to a good point. There wasn't a dull moment in the story and it was Scorching hot in places. I found it hard to put down. This is another great book about dragon shifters and Necromancer Mages. There is a poltergeist attacking our town and we need help. Mikhail Baranov is the necromancer mage that the council sent to us to help. Nix Emberin is the person that Mikhail is to talk to about this issue. The last necromancer mage that was in town was killed about 10 years ago. Can Mikhail and Nix work together and find out who the poltergeist is and what he wants? How will Mikhail stop the poltergeist for good when he finds out who he is? Who will help Mikhail? What will happen to Nix? I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Aiden Bates and Jill Haven write a good mystery in Ashes and Grave (2020), the second book in their “Dragon Magic” series. It just also happens to be a paranormal romance with dragons and magic too.
Bates and Haven create plenty of drama to include everything from family to cultural differences to of course that most drama causing emotion of all: love. There are battles, heated discussions, and pouting (laugh).
Bates and Haven have provided it all in Ashes and Grave. So grab your e-reader and hold on tight you will see more than a ghost in this book.
I received an ARC of this book and I am writing a review without prejudice and voluntarily.
Not only does this book have magic, ghosts and dragons but also it has enemies to lovers; these are a few of my very favorite things. Nix is forced to work together with Mikhail and from the beginning sparks fly. They’re both stubborn but I enjoyed their bickering and watching them fall for each other even when they didn’t want to. I adored Mikhail’s “condition” (so funny) and meeting many new characters. I hope we see them again in the next adventure which I am anxiously awaiting.
I loved Nix and Mikhail!! I really liked the first story in this series, but I loved this one! Nix was the leader of his dragon weyr and Mikhail is a necromancer. Nix’s weyr has a “ghost” problem and has need of a necromancer. The story line of this one was so much clearer and more concise. The twist and turns in this were heart breaking at times. But it was so good!! I am voluntarily leaving a review form an ARC that I received from Gay Romance Reviews. My reviews are solely based on my thoughts and opinions
This was a very interesting story that I really enjoyed.
Nix and Mikhail are great. I love ennemies to lovers and this was a good example of that trope. You can really feel how much they dislike each other at the beginning and it gradually changes, subtly. And their falling in love and like of each other was very sweet. Sad, hot and fun moments interspersed in there were great.
I really enjoyed the story itself. It was interesting and different. The world setting was great and I can't wait to read more.
The authors of this story, Jill Haven and Auden Bates, created a fantastical world. With twists and turns like I’ve never read before, I was constantly drawn into the story further as each chapter carried on. The characters, all well thought out and brilliantly delivered, were realistic and entertaining. The stories of the main characters childhoods were heartfelt and sad, giving them so much depth as adults. When characters are so endearing and the writing is so descriptive and creative the readers are able to feel all the feelings the characters felt.
Definitely enjoyed this one more then the first one for a few reasons. I wasn’t confused about the any past storylines or about the relationship between the two main characters. Nix hated Mikhail because of a past offense that Mikhail’s people did to Nix’s people, simple as that. I could definitely understand the hate and resentment from both sides. The reconciliation between them was hard fought but I believe that Nix finally understood that it wasn’t really Mikhail’s fault for any of it. I loved this story and can’t wait to see it continue...
Wow these two authors have done it again with this story Ashes and Grave and I absolutely loved it you can always count on there being amazing characters wether you love or hate them and the suspense keeps you on the edge of your seat so guys can you please keep these books coming. Sorry guys no spoilers so read the blurb and that will give you the gist to this story so get this book you can’t go wrong, it’s amazing it’s a 5 plus ⭐️ read/ series and I definitely recommend this book.
This was one hell of a fantastic, grab-you-by-the-feels, fascinating, fast paced, action packed, intense, intriguing, amazing, wild, exciting, smoldering, nail biting, keep-you-on-the-edge-of-your-seat, and totally awesome enemies-to-lovers story. Filled with mystery, magic, madness, mayhem, more twists and turns than a roller coaster, this thriller had me hooked from beginning to end. I would recommend getting this marvelous book immediately, and I can't wait to see what happens next.
