Welcome to the Red City.
You belong to the demons now.

Prison has not been kind to the girl who could paint the future.
When Doe is given the opportunity to serve the rest of her life sentence in the confines of the Red City, without bars, she does not hesitate.
Demons rule the walled city, and humans are for food, pleasure or servitude.
When Doe is purchased at an auction by the Pink Sector, the sordid territory of the Incubi and Succubi, she is thrown into a world unlike anything she has ever seen.
Her new master hates her, without reason. The harem is full of beautiful viperous women.
There is an insane Demon in the wine cellar of the mansion, who claims that she is his soul mate.
Something deeper is going on, and snapshots of the future won't help.

Can Doe stay alive or will the Demons chew her up and spit her out like so many before her.
Will the Wilde brothers, her new masters, be enough to save her from herself?

What a fun moment! I really enjoyed this book from the first to almost last page.

Red City is about Doe, a former convict sold to demons to escape a life behind bars. She is bought by Lucas Wilde, from the sector of Lust, and brought back to his manor.

On the paper, Red City was nothing but perfect.

a weak, too stupid to live heroine;
a hot and cold love interest;
a mean psychotic hardcore bully as a secondary female character;
a cast of supporting characters too easily overshadowed and forgotten;
a very predictable storyline;
a somewhat too easy of an ending.

But I couldn't help being hooked. Does, as pityful as she was, was an endearing character and Malachi was sweet enough to overcome Lucas's yandere personality.

My heart bled for Doe more than once. Weak she was, but her life and the characters around her were not helping her. She was beaten, stampled upon, and her complete lack of self esteem made characters unable to really believe in her.

The real downside of the book, excluding the underwhelming ending, was probably the complexity of the universe. I believe Red City was but a story in an already vast world building. I may be wrong as it was my first book from this author but I would assume reading other books from her would help me comprehend more the demons castes, the sectors and Hell's hierarchy. Because in the end, I was as confused as Doe.

But in the end, Red City was a really enjoyable read, with some steamy scenes and a bit of action. It was about a woman trying to overcome everything but mostly herself to grow and become who she was to be.

Trigger Warning: violence, slavery, attempted assault. Some scenes were particularly bloody.

even demons should apologize

I enjoyed this book to an extent. Really great take on mythology, demons, angels and all sorts of paranormals in general!! But once again…I was disappointed by one of Doe’s demons. Why oh why can’t authors seem to understand that showing and telling aren’t the same thing? Even in you are a demon?

**spoiler** cutting off a head is NOT the same thing as a true apology if you really love someone. And to make things worse this was done BEFORE Doe’s jerk demon boyfriend even realized she was his reincarnated love. And even when she came back reincarnated he didn’t apologize for ALL THOSE YEARS of disloyalty and unfaithfulness and that bothered me most. His brother remained true, but he chose a lifetime of meaningless “relations” with horrible women just because he was “lonely?” (Keep in mind he still felt a tingling of the bond which made the cheating even worse in my mind) It might seem like it makes sense but it really doesn’t -not in this scenario. She was clearly their one and only, Malachi remained true and Lucas did not. On top of which he treated Doe horribly and flaunted his mistress in front of her even though he wanted her. Ohhhh not to mention he was still sleeping with her while Doe was the one he wanted. And even when she came back as Eva he didn’t apologize. I mean, what, demons can’t apologize??? Toooo human an action for them? *eye roll* and I really didn’t like that the all mighty Eva did not let him hang for longer than she did! She should not have forgiven him so easily, especially when he was untrue to her, treated her like dirt USED her (when she was in her human form because she looked like his lost love) and then continued to sleep around until nearly the end of the book! The book tied up too quickly and all his transgressions were definitely brushed under the bed too quickly. I’m not certain why authors lately seem the need to tie things up so quickly as if to show us readers that holding grudges or waiting for true remorse are bad things?? It’s only natural to wish for a romance novel even a paranormal one to deal a little more realistically in human emotions like love, and fidelity. Why is cheating always discounted or excused as “okay?” (Even discounted as morally wrong?) Even in situations like these?? Yes they’d waited forever, but the author set it up that way, making her readers KNOW Eva was their one and only! And then she twisted it so Lucas’ treatment of Doe would make you dislike him so wholly that you wished she was only with Malachi. Again interesting read but truly disappointed in the “romance” area.

"All I could do was keep living and hope that the universe would stop shitting on me."

I first saw this book as a suggested br on https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...# I didn’t even look at the blurb, I just went for it. I only read the blurb after finishing the book. And I am glad I did that because otherwise I would not have been able to reconcile what I was reading with the way it is introduced. I think it helped to go in blind, with no expectations, I truly believe, I would have been more disappointed if I had expectations.

Here goes - Doe chooses to be sold at an auction rather than face more prison time. She is then bought by Lucas Wilde, the demon of lust, to babysit a feral demon beast. Her arrival at the Wilde estate is seen as a threat by Cecile, Lucas’ sort-of-consort and she does everything in her power to try to get rid of Doe.

The story is good and engaging, the characters are interesting, but the world building is sort of lacking or too rushed, I am not sure which, it might be both. But this does not lessen the entertaining parts that much. I got sucked right in and forgot about all the parts that I didn’t quite understand or irritated me. The most disappointing thing is the summarised versions of events both current and past. I feel like if they were elaborated more the quality of the story would have been improved. There were also other events and narratives that contradicted each other. And others were just too convenient to be believable or make sense.

Apart from these issues, it wasn't a bad read, the story just needed more meat to go with the broth. This is one of those books that has too much crammed into a standalone, when a series would have been more suitable.

So prisoner, Doe, is carted off to a strange demon place as an alternate to her lifetime prison sentence. We soon learn that she has exchanged one type of hell for another as she is sold into sexual slavery.

Or is she?

Her purchaser, Lucas, gives her the job of babysitting the beast. Doe does this whilst observing all the goings on inside the harem.

Eventually she gets it on with both Lucas and brother Malachi whilst avoiding endless plots to kill her.

This is a solid three star / maybe 4 star read. I will caveat this by saying that RH is not really my favourite genre so this would probably rate higher if it were.

What I liked

I liked the world building. I felt like all the families and sectors and hierarchy was a bit confusing but I think if there were more stories set in this world it would make a rich setting. I would love to read more about this demon world.

I liked how the demons weren’t as bad as the human prison guard made out.

I liked all the side characters who supported Doe.

I liked the brothers. I think the big, hulking Malachi was my favourite.

What I didn’t like

Doe was so weak!

I hated being the weak one. The one that needed protection.

Yes Doe, I hated it too. I also hates that you never once went to the gym to try and get strong nor asked anyone to teach you how to fight. Admittedly, your own weakness pissed you off, but at least try and do something!

I find this a common plot device in RH. Female lead is constantly in need of protection. She’s unaware why she is so special and as she attempts to find out she is beset by assailants. Female lead seems to spend a lot of time being safe in rooms, not doing a lot but often wearing nice clothes.

This book was no exception to this device which is really not my thing.

Finally getting around to reading these. I liked this one. I liked Doe with her predictions and her moments with Malachi. Lucas took some getting used to, that guy was blind. Predictable but enjoyable, mean girl bullying and manipulation. Would’ve been a 5 star but the ending dragged a bit and I started losing focus.

What a terrible ending… don’t think it’s worth the read just because of the last chapters. There are also so many unanswered questions.

I’m jumping right in, I really enjoyed this book. I love stand-alones but I really wish there was a second book or even a series just to continue on with their story. Red city, to me, was a fast pace read. I enjoyed the whole book from start to finish, I didn’t want to put it down for more than five minutes. I have been in a reading runt/funk lately and I will admit, I almost put this book down but I pushed myself to at least read two chapters, and I ended up reading to part two (chapter 15). May not seem like a lot but it felt like a mini vacation from mom/spouse life.

If you’re looking for a fun and interesting demon story, I recommend reading Red City. 🖤🖤🖤

Strong idea. Needed a little more fleshing out. Also, could have benefited from an editor for misspellings, wrong word uses, and some gaps in logic and storyline.

TITLE - Red City

TYPE - Standalone
POV - 1st Person - Multiple

READ DATES - 3/22/2024 to 3/23/2024

RATINGS
Overall: 3.2/5⭐️
Characters: 2/5👀
Plot: 3/5🧩
World: 2/5🌎
Romance: 1/5💘
Spice: 3/5🌶️
Pacing: 5/5⌛️

MAIN CHARACTERS - Doe/, Malachi, Lucas

SUMMARY - A human prisoner takes her chances of regaining freedom by going to Red City to be sold to demons. She's only known captivity as most of her memories are gone. When she is bought by the Wilde demon family of Lust, she finds more than she bargained for in the form of demon brothers Malachi and Lucas. Finding out she bears a striking resemblance to their missing soulmate, she struggles to find her own worth and separation from their pasts as well as the threats that seem to find her at every turn.

INITIAL REACTION - I went into this one with higher expectations after having read 'Dead Ringer'. It's probably unfair to compare the two, especially because this book precedes that one, but that's sort of where I'm going to be going with this. As far as the characters go, Malachi and Doe were the only likeable ones for me. Everyone else was barely tolerable (looking at you, Lucas). The mean girl shit was annoying. I don't know if it's just me and I'm completely over it or if everyone else is feeling the same. Also, keeping secrets and withholding information? Gee, that never backfires right? The world-building took a huge dive as well since we barely get to see Red City despite the title. The plot wasn't bad per se, but it was pretty predictable and I felt like I wanted to speed up the events of the book to just rip off the Band-Aid. While some things got resolved, a lot was left standing and I would've appreciated more closure. All in all, it wasn't terrible. I know the above makes it seem so but I still finished it mostly in one sitting so let that speak for itself. I'd still give this author another chance in hopes that maybe this was just a bit of a dud in the collection because the potential is absolutely there and the other book (above) was absolutely fantastic.

WOULD I RECOMMEND? - Probably not when other options would do the job better. Broken record here but I'd recommend Dead Ringer instead 100%.

I loved The Dead Ringer so much and immediately thought of reading the author's other works because I expected them to have the same quality as that book: a well written book that doesn't feel juvenile + characters that are well rounded and doesn't feel cartoonish.

Now, I'm soooo disappointed as I finally DNFed the book at the middle. The start was already so cringy for me, it was giving Wattpad story with meek but actually very brave *petite 5 foot nothing small fmc* (GOD, this passage made my eye roll and the fact that she had to remind us how so damn small she is? PLEASE STOP) and of course the super hot super tall asshole of an mmc who is unapologetic and unrepentant and whom I felt that would never apologize and take responsibility for his actions because the author is lazy and have been possessed by whatever syndrome 15 year olds have whenever they write stories like this one.

Read a 2 star review and I was right.

Didn't want to DNF the book because I felt like I owe it to you as a Thank You for writing TDR (truly a fave) but then the fmc started acting like a seductive nymph in a way that's so unnatural for their character development which made it feel like they're trying too hard and again SO DAMN CRINGY. One moment they're sad, then angry, and not even a moment later they're purring and batting their lashes? Lol. She's written so inconsistently, my goodness. At least pick what kind of person she actually is and stick to it OR you should've dedicated a good character development for them so the readers wouldn't get a whiplash.

The Dead Ringer took me less than four hours to finish while I have fallen asleep while reading this book and I'm not even in the middle yet because I have to take several breaks with how unbearable a lot of happenings in this book are. Don't like it at all and hated how it wasted my time.

2.5 stars. I wanted to do 2 but I hate to slam an indie author’s work and would rather round up to 3.

There is a decent story here, but for me, the poor writing and poorer editing detracts and distracts from the story. The constant use of fragments and run-on sentences maybe is supposed to be stylistic but reads very juvenile to me (one example: “Malachi had brought up pancakes while I had been in the shower, neither demon ate, waiting for me, even though the food looked delicious.”).

There’s also tons of instances of missing words and tense or noun/verb disagreement that definitely can’t be classified as a style choice and simply are mistakes (examples: “I worried my bottom lip between my teeth as I debating his words” and “I haven’t done any those things.”). I know to some people this is petty but I cannot just read past things like this, especially when they appear with the frequency with which they appear throughout this book.

Finally, while I am no prude, some of the spicy scenes were borderline gross. I mainly attribute this to two things—1) multiple references to a MMC making contact with the FMC’s womb 🤢 and 2) very unsexy descriptions of body parts, as we see in the sentence “The angry mushroom head wept a drop of precum” 🤮🤮 No shade if that does it for you, but it is not for me.

This is the second standalone book that I've read from this author, and I loved it a lot. Doe has no memory of her past, but she does have the ability to see someone's death when she touches that person. That gift has been more of a burden and has caused her trouble with the label of being a pyscho. She must finish her prison sentence out in one of the seven circles. Lucas, a pureblood Demon King of Lust has just purchased her, leading her into his world of lust, jealousy, betrayal and pain. Lucas and Malachi are twins, but they are in very different stages of what I will say is grief, after losing their mate. Cecile is Lucas's favorite currently, and she will do anything and everything to let Doe know that Lucas is hers. Doe had to fight for her life in more ways than one and accept who she really is if she wants to survive. Threats are coming from all angles but there is one person that is shown her love, Malachi. Malachi knows who Doe is to him, he just needs Lucas to get on the same page before it's too late. This is a story full of suspense, surprises, lust, jealousy, revenge, betrayal, friendships, destiny and love with a shocking ending. I'm definitely excited to read more of this author standalone books.

A fun read

This book is kind of gave the same feelings while I was reading it as "Four Psychos," by Kristy Cunning. Though the MFC isn't a ghost, she does have amnesia and can't remember her life prior to a certain point. In this book when Doe comes to join the Lust harem and meets Lucas and later Malachi, she feels a connection she can't explain but quickly tries to brush away in order to protect herself from jealous b!tches. The story is intriguing and hot. The characters have real chemistry, so much so that at times I wanted to yell at Doe to just jump'em already.

It's different from Four Psychos, but in the same vein. It's fun. There's demons that your rooting for and some mystery you think you may know the answer to (or not?!?), but it has that vibe about the world-building that has you hoping there is more have you finish. I will say, happily I might add, the author does have other stories set in this world she has created so the fun doesn't have to end yet. Yay!!

This is my fifth Michaela Haze book in as many weeks, and it really struggled to hold my interest...to the point where I almost DNF'ed it, but decided to just skim the last 25% instead.

I think the most frustrating thing is that you know the "big twist" at like 20% into the book (it's sooooooo obvious) yet everyone dances around actually revealing it until the 80% mark. I mean sometimes you see things coming but this was so obvious and everyone was doing the FMC such a disservice throughout the whole book. Also, there was some other woman drama, and one of the MMCs was honestly just an irredeemable asshole from start to finish. (He never once apologized!)

Also, the book and the character's monologue repeatedly harps on how tiny and weak she is. Like...okay, we get it, she's short and skinny, let's find something else to talk about. (And I'm also short and skinny, so I'm not triggered, I just found her absolutely insufferable!)

Just a heads up, the story contains a variety of tropes and trigger warnings that may be important to some people. Such as: hate to love, altered memory, bullying, physical assault, and murders.

It was a bit hard to get into the book during the first two to three chapters, but once the main character got settled into her new home and she got to meet new people, the pacing and flow of the story got better.

Also, from the first few chapters alone some things were immediately very obvious and predictable. Though these things were obviously laid down already, what made the story still entertaining to read is that while to outcome was predetermined, the journey still contained a whirlwind of activities and revelations that kept me interested. Also, it does help to see the female main character learn to fight for herself and see her journey to growth and discovery.

This was an interesting take on hell with it's different levels in a circle and the exchange of prisoners for a free sentence. Doe was an anomaly a seer of deaths by touch who couldn't remember a thing about herself. Labeled a freak she was shunned in the prison system and in her new home among the list level. I appreciated her strength against the odds.

I was sucked into this new world and upset on Foes behalf as she endures more abuse by a bully. The allies she has through the torment were amazing and the reveals about her past were unexpected. The bonds she holds with her love interest are intense , complicated, and vastly different.

This story took me on the best ride! I was hooked in the moment I started Red City as I am with all of Michaela Haze’s works!! Doe starts off not knowing much and is paraded off to the Red City to serve a prison, but without the bars (freedom right?!). Except this did not turn out to be the freedom she was hoping for. As Doe learns more about herself and all the others around her she reveals very shocking truths. I recommend for readers to take up this amazing work of art and figure out what Doe unfolds while alongside her demons.

Jane Doe

Absolutely sensational standalone.
This was everything and more, didn’t expect any of what I just read and I am not complaining. This has not only been entertaining, binge worthy and addicting. It’s definitely unique, one of a kind and a keeper.
I really didn’t know what to expect when I started and I’m absolutely gutted it’s over.

If only this was the real world where very bad criminals were sent to a place like a red city. I think there would be a lot less crime lol.

10/10 must read from me.

A bit of fun

I liked this book, I would say loved apart from the ending. We basically lost our MC to this much bigger personality with a past that we know nothing about, so their wasn't any emotional payoff....it was basically like.. Oh well I guess doe doesn't really exist anymore, all of the nuances of this character that I have liked are gone now....so that kinda sucked. Oh well... I liked the rest of the book 📙

The cover doesn't relate to the story at all in a way that actually keeps me intrigued.

I'm been struggling between devouring all of Michaela Haze's books and pacing myself. They are pretty addictive and slightly linked together. The pace is a bit slow but keeps me interested with all the little clues we get.

I wasn't expecting this and it was really enjoyable. Good writing and most characters were likable.

Read this book! ... just ignore the typos

Unique, imaginative, chest squeezing, jaw clenching, other parts guaranteed to feel the effects of this sexy, mysterious, typo-ridden (did I spell that right?) writing.
Without errors–⭐⭐⭐⭐
I also found Doe's innumerable weaknesses to be very frustrating, but at least that's another emotional reaction, right?

Enjoyable but predictable

This gave me hardcore Four Psychos vibes, which is great because I loved that series too

Girl with no memory meet the loves of her life but is jealous because they loved someone before her…etc etc

Lucas and Malachi are adorable. The “twist” at the end was a nice touch.

Overall a good read, predictable and enjoyable.

Little Doe

I really enjoyed this book, however I don’t feel very satisfied with the ending.
SPOLIERS:

I didn’t enjoy the melding of Doe & Eva. I was very much hoping that Doe would be her own person, powerful in her own right. The story was told great either way I just believe it would’ve been much more satisfying to be different people.

Sooooo good

Great story with all the sins intertwined. Doe was a softy at first but she finally gained her mojo. Cecile definitely got what she deserved. Mal and Lucas are twins with very different personalities but they balance each other out and share their love for Doe. Highly recommend this story to everyone!!

Well wow!!

Okay, so, this book was surprisingly excellent. Loved that it wasn’t a rehash, loved that it was a ménage, loved the main characters and the side characters built a really compelling storyline. And that ending!! Hahaha yeah...I can’t believe it ended right there, cause what a twist! Highest recommendation for this. 6 stars. Read now!
