I'm Liv Cartwright, mage, thief, and unapologetic nerd.
Magically talented people like me have two choices: use our powers at the beck and call of the Order of the Elements or be exiled to the realm of monsters. Sounds like an easy choice, right? Not so much. Since my mentor dabbled in forbidden spirit magic and left me to take the fall, I have to pay off his debts without using my magic.
I'd rather spend my free time gaming than retrieving valuable objects for the Order, but my latest retrieval job goes from mundane to deadly when I end up on the wrong side of the terrifying King of the Dead. Turns out he doesn’t like thieves, and he likes the Order even less. To make things worse, I run into my ex-boyfriend, a fire mage who's carrying as many secrets as I am, and find my simple thieving job has landed me in the middle of a conspiracy. A second elemental war is brewing, and the key to stopping it lies in my long-buried memories of my mentor's lessons.
The catch? If the Order finds out, they'll show me no mercy this time -- and everyone knows there's a good reason spirit magic was banned.

If you don’t agree with SJW ideology, then you probably won’t like this book. Mary Sue character that makes insanely stupid decisions all while using people’s preferred pronouns. She was, of course, very understanding about Ryan wanting to use they/them pronouns and indeed, used them so much that it made the book difficult to read. Despite all of this, I still downloaded the second book to see if maybe it got any better because I thought the magic to be pretty interesting. Unfortunately the 2nd book was even worse. Don’t waste your time on this series
I honestly expected more. Between the editing errors and too much happening at once, this story was a mess. It really felt like a mashup of Jacinda Hemlock meets Ivy Lane set amongst a magical world that can easily be called Faerie as opposed to the Parallel. I wanted to like Liv but found that I wasn’t heavily invested in her or her story, I get that she lost her memories but maybe if we had more examples of how it affected her as opposed to her just being some bottom feeding seeker that were supposed to cheer on. Also, am I the only one who isn’t sold on her love story with Brant? Or maybe wondering if the Death King is really a long lost uncle or something. Hopefully book 2 will redeem itself.
It's been a while since we had a book in a new universe from Emma and it does not disappoint.
A spooky magical separate bubble dimension to earth where all the magical creatures, undead and alive have been segregated to as well as the normal world.
A great story line with magic, a funny sidekick and plenty of action
Spoiler alert! In the end, I liked this book. However certain parts were very frustrating. Liv said over and over and over that she wanted to give the amulet to the Death King. She tried several times to get into his castle and failed. Yet she saw him on the street on Earth and could have easily given it to him and said she found it by the water mage. She also could have been more submissive in order to give it to the Air Element instead of provoking them. After getting past my annoyance, I was able to enjoy the rest of the book. I will read the next book in the series when it is available.
I received my copy as an advanced review copy, but that does not mean Emma Adams influenced my review below:
Do you like D&D? I used to game with my husband, and I was good at it until my memory could not capture clues between sessions. So Olivia, the intrepid gamer, is also a damaged person who got caught tutoring from an illegal Spirit master. She was left with a large hole in her memories but supposed magic still intact. I really understand her problems, and not a day goes by without reminders of her social downfall. Still, Liv wants to earn income with her paltry magic rather than succumbing to the perils of Walmart greeters everywhere, and she uses magic dice to help her out. I LOVE that. Too bad she only uses the lucky dice once; I want more!
Just to warn you, Liv is not the brightest character in the story, and she is the pawn sent to steal an item that turns out to be the nominee for most-likely-to-start-a-war-between-realms. The Dead King, who controls an army in the magic realm is upset, and his hornet's nest is swarming around the Real World where Liv resides. A rebel group, let's say, the Soul Stealer and Vampire coalition, is showing up like guerilla fighters, and the organization Liv works for, the Order, is corrupt but wants to keep magic unknown to the Real World. Liv should have worried about back-stabbing and intrigue and murder.
What is a pawn to do? She tries to bring the amulet back, but she has no clue about the world, her magic, and 2 years of her life. She tries to figure out what is going on, and everyone keeps tossing her into air, or into underground cells.
Her ex-lover is a wet noodle who wants to help, has the Fire capability, but cannot use it to great effect. Her sometimes gaming friend, the elf, is a loser. Seriously, he is too quiet and wimpy to help her. Her bestie creates spells but hates the front line :). Want to turn into a lich? NO? I cannot understand why....
What this means is that Liv learns to use her small capabilities to better effect than her powerful ex, who pretty much threw it around as if he had no training. Raw power is no excuse for lack of training or study. I love that aspect of the story. I have to remind myself every time Liv makes a stupid logical assumption. What she has is the ability to detect poor versus good character, and it shows. Ultimately, even with poor decisions, she figures out who to trust, and Liv is willing to jump in to save the world, her friends despite all costs.
Remember that when she decides to invade the Dead King's castle without reinforcements or cavalry.
What you need to know about the writer if she is new to you: * Emma writes urban fantasy, not PNR, and I have to remember that every time I find the romantic angle rushed or overlooked, but she is getting better at it. * Emma has no Reverse Harem, thank you. * Emma created a well-developed world concept. Rather than milking it to death through 12 or more books in one series, she broke it up into several smaller trilogies. That is my preference, since my long-term memory is shot after a bout of extreme iron-deficiency in college. Plus, if you don't like one series, you might try another. * I found her previous Fae Killer and gatekeeper series excellent but the Dragon shifter series had too many superheroes to track or develop independent personalities. * An ARC is an advanced copy given to people on the mailing list who follow her, but we are given no directions except to mention this. I had to google to understand ARC, but I want to save you the energy.
With a gap in her memories, Liv is already a magnet for unwanted trouble. Yet even she could not expect the magnitude of problems she stumbled in after a routine work for the Order. The amulet she now has in possession is of great value, and it puts her into a precarious position between the Order and the Death King. Another war might be brewing, only no one know where is it coming from, and even how to stop the wannabe usurper.. A hell of a ride, full of action, adventure, and suspense, with lots of drama and intense emotional exposure. I fell in love with Liv from the first page, although I had to find my way to Brant over time (not happened yet). Officially I declare myself team Death King :) He is for me the most interesting character in the book, still wrapped in lots of mysteries, and he has some kind of dangerous charisma that pulls me even deeper in the story. I also loved the weird bunch of side characters surrounding Liv - they are adorable, fascinating, and sometimes full of surprises. I hope to get more of them soon.
This new world is very different than her Fae series. I really like Liv, I feel really sorry for her. She really got treated terribly! I can't imagine working for people who would take that much from you. And the guys that took advantage of her because they knew what happened to her were atrocious! I understand why people are scared by the magic that Liv can do, however I think it's amazing! She is more powerful than well, I won't ruin any part of the book. I loved the character Devon, her best friend. She is so sweet & who doesn't love living with someone who you can get free cantrips from? I'm not sure how I feel about Brant yet. He was basically using her to keep his soul. He had a poor choice in friends, especially Vaughan. However, he really seems to care for Liv. He is protective of her. Overall I really enjoyed this book, although I think Liv should have taken the job offer she received at the end, with negotiations that she could live on Earth. And her new employer could smooth that over with the Order, I'm sure.
Extraordinarily entertaining urban fantasy series.
Entertaining urban fantasy action adventure series. A quirky cast of characters in a time we are magic is on earth but hidden from the public. Supernaturals can go to a parallel dimension created by spirit majes long time ago. On earth the order is in charge. In the parallel the death king and the vampires are in charge. Olivia is an order retriever. She goes into the parallel searching for different objects or people that the order Zinzer after. She stumbles into something that opens up an entire can of worms from her past. Read on and find out what happens. You will not be disappointed. Check it out
I don’t get the relationship between the protagonist and the guy who walked out on her like a thief in the night. His reason for coming back was because he screwed up and needed her help. No apologies. Nothing that showed he cared for her with his actions. Only lies and half truths to get her to help. Then boom, all of a sudden everything is rainbows and you don’t care he only came to you for your magic? You should have just left her without a love interest and helping a friend. It literally destroyed the story and made an otherwise strong character seem weak.
Looking for next book in a wonderful series of books. You can't go wrong reading author, Emma L. Adams's books. Lots of action, Strong characters, well thought out. Read them in their order written, because one book leads into another in the series, filling out each character. End of the series, no problemo, leads you into the next in the series written by Emma L Adam's. The characters do intertwine, if you want to read them consecutively, go to Emma Adam's web site. There she tells you the series line-up. So if you thought I was going to spoil the book, sorry not sorry. Read the synopsis for yourself.
As the plot goes and the characters I would give a 4. Not up to par with my favourite series’s from the author Changeling Chronicles Celestial Marked. even though I own all her works
I took a star away due to the author seeming to be following the crowds in that the new underlying theme now seems to be Gamer oriented whereas previously the authors were rushing to publish reverse-harem themed works. But it seems that Ms Adams also wants to indicate that she is PC compliant and had to mention that one of the characters is non-binary.
*I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review*
Another interesting book and a new world from Emma L. Adams. Liv presents a lot of secrets and an unknown past. She is missing a few years of her teenage years that have a lot of important information that it seems like she is going to need at some point. The side characters were nice and Dex was an entertaining addition.
As always, a fun read from Adams and I look forward to book 2 coming out shortly.
This book makes a fun read in these stressful times.
I liked it. There was a lot of jumping from realm to realm but Liv had loyal friends in both places. Someone at the order has it in for her and is setting her up to be framed or murdered for magical transgressions. She is sent to steal an artifact but then told to return it. All heck breaks loose and it’s clear that someone in the order is rotten and some of the King of Death followers are also corrupt. It is up to Liv and her friends to find out who is framing her and how to reverse it while she learns more and more about the memories that were stolen from her as a punishment by the order.
Some really nice universe where some stories can't take place. What the story lacked was a big edit. The individual actions were good or okay but maybe a top level edit could eliminate certain chapters that repeated story points. Added chapters or changed chapters to make the store a bigger better whole. But check I haven't written a novel that was published yet so good job
I am never disappointed by this author! I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Such an interesting new world she has created! Liv is such an interesting character and I can't wait to read more about her adventures. Magic, a speckling of romance and a forbidden maybe not so evil bad guy all combine to make this a fun and adventurous read!
This story follows the adventures of Liv, a girl who was punished for learning forbidden magic. She is working for the controlling magic agency as a retriever, she gets back stolen artifacts. Unfortunately this last retrieval goes wrong and a whole series of misadventures occur. Lots of action and good dialog. A fun book to read
Loved the concept. The geek girl playing dnd while kinda doing that in real life too. But it was boring and didn't flow at all. The whole book felt like it was forced. There was no romance. The banter was choppy and in some places didn't make sense. I didn't really like any of the characters I would not have cared if they were all killed off. Gave it two cuz I finished it.
I love the storyline, I love the imagination that went into this too. There are some excellent characters, but..... As the main character, I find Liv more than a little lacklustre. I know there's time for her character to evolve, but I find her droll and uninspiring as a book series main. The Death King would have made a great main, I'd love to read this series written from his perspective.
Difficult to get into. Found parts of the explanation about the "world's" confusing and rather complicated to make sense of. It doesn't seem to be clear who belongs where.. why is Brant in the parallel as a mage and yet other Mage's are on earth? Too many types of supernatural seem to be in both places and yet not supposed to be.
Fabulous start to a new series!! I absolutely loved this first book and I'm actually currently reading the second book. Great characters and world building. I couldn't put it down.
I like the action and the flavor of the characters in this first book in the series. I can see lots of promise in where the stories may go. Now, go away! I have a new series to consume...
For me this book and the world it introduced - the 'Parallel' had a lot of potential and I liked the magic angle, but unfortunately it lost my interest at the 50% mark and I found myself skipping paragraphs until the end.
Didn’t think I would get on with this series of books but it turns out it was a good choice to persevere. Glad I did and hope anyone who reads this book goes on to read all the books, well worth while.
A different soon on the magical v non magical worlds running in parallel. I'm looking forward to the story development in the next book. Likeable characters too!
(FYI I tend to only review one book per series, unless I completely change my mind on a series, so want to change my scoring.)
3.5*
First time read the author's work?: No
Will you be reading more?: Yes
Would you recommend?: Yes
------------ How I rate Stars: 5* = I loved (must read all I can find by the author) 4* = I really enjoyed (got to read all the series and try other books by the author). 3* = I enjoyed (I will continue to read the series) or 3* = Good book just not my thing (I realised I don't like the genre or picked up a kids book to review in error.)
All of the above scores means I would recommend them! - 2* = it was okay (I might give the next book in the series a try, to see if that was better IMHO.) 1* = Disliked
Note: adding these basic 'reviews' after finding out that some people see the stars differently than I do - hoping this clarifies how I feel about the book. :-)
Frustrating read. No one took the time to really think things over, or listen. Let's not forget that this entire book would of ended much sooner if the death kings air elemental would of just listened instead of just blasting the FMC during their first encounter. The love interest was also extremely problematic.
