The journey through Marvel history reaches the current decade as Wolverine’s vigil takes a dark turn! Spider-Woman battles with disinformation on social media! And an all-new story featuring Korea’s own super hero, White Fox!
Charles Soule is a #1 New York Times-bestselling novelist, comics author, screenwriter, musician, and lapsed attorney. He has written some of the most prominent stories of the last decade for Marvel, DC and Lucasfilm in addition to his own work, such as his comics Curse Words, Letter 44 and Undiscovered Country, and his original novels Light of the Jedi, The Endless Vessel, The Oracle Year and Anyone. He lives in New York.
This is a collection of three stories by different authors and quite frankly Wolverine’s story was the most forgettable. It wasn’t even clear what it was. Ignoring the age old "Nazis conjure demons" bullshit, but this talks of several x-men dying in the fight against the demon. So, is this a what if story? And holy shit, what happened with Wolverine? He looks almost anorexic. And his story was pointless, but this one with Spiderwoman and dealing with the aftermath of someone pretending to be her and then spreading it online, that one had its charm and is a fine story on its own. So, this issue had one plus point already.
I was here because of the story for White Fox and this must be her earlier costume, and she looks like a rip-off of Black Cat. I like it that they use the Korean idiom "I don't have time to open my eyes and nose" but instead of just telling us that it is an idiom, perhaps they should explain it. I had to look it up and it means: You’re too busy and have no time to lose. And since I read this after I read the issue of Future Fights with her, I have to wonder: how does Ami even know of her grandmother? The one shot from Future Fights acted as if her mother told her everything and there was no grandmother mentioned. Did they retcon a character they barely used already? And when she is in Japan, why don’t they specify that the colonial rule was Japanese? Is it the old unwillingness to consider Japan an imperial power? And this here features that she can talk to animals and can steal the energy of people via a magic ball, I guess these two would have been nice to have in Agents of Atlas. And why does she mention her grandmother again? So yeah, this definitely opens up a few canon holes and contradictions when you read the Agents of Atlas. But on its own it is a fine story.
3.5 stars. As Usual, the Wolverine story continues to be good. Surprisingly we get two good stories in this issue. The 2nd story with Spider woman was short but def entertaining. The last story with White Fox was ok. Not much to it but it wasn’t bad.
