What if you wished you were a sea turtle and then you became one? Could you eat like a sea turtle? Sleep like a sea turtle? Spend most of your life underwater? And would you want to? Find out! This I Can Read book is an excellent choice to share during homeschooling, in particular for children ages 5 to 7 who are ready to read independently. It’s a fun way to keep your child engaged and as a supplement for activity books for children.
Ranger Rick explorers can learn all about sea turtles in this reader full of fascinating facts, vivid wildlife photographs, a Wild Words glossary, and a hands-on activity.
Ranger Rick: I Wish I Was a Sea Turtle is a Guided Reading Level K and a level One I Can Read, which means it’s perfect for children learning to sound out words and sentences.
Jennifer Bové is an award-winning contributor to Ranger Rick Jr®, children's book author, and editor of three anthologies. Jen's work is often inspired by nature and her background in field biology, which brought her face-to-face with wild things like elephant seals, sandhill cranes, salmon, and snakes. She currently lives with her family in Wyoming.
Jack grabbed this book off the shelf at the Oxford Public Library and asked Grandie to read it. He stayed engaged the whole time and seemed to really like the sea turtles.
Got a pack of these at Costco and they all follow the same pattern, so I'll post this review on all of them.
Goes through various facts about the animal, asking the reader to imagine what it would be like to be one. Some cool pictures. I like introducing Lily to some more non-fiction books.
It drove me nuts when I noticed the grammatical error in every title, though. Should be "I Wish I Were." This is called the subjunctive mood. People don't always use it in English anymore--it is kind of getting phased out, but they could have at least chosen to use it or not. The inside text of the books all use "I Wish I Were" rather than "Was," so it seems like they must have had totally different people working on the title and design vs. the content.
I read this to Julianna this morning. Another book topic for Library summer reading activity sheet. Julianna gave the book a 5. She said she liked it because she liked learning about the sea turtles. Book Says reading level 1 but its a big long for a new reader to read on their own. But its a good book. And I like that it is a Ranger Rick book.
If you wish to teach children incorrect grammar, give them this book. How can an author, editor, and publisher all be ignorant about the subjunctive mood? The title should be, "I Wish I Were a Sea Turtle". https://strategiesforparents.com/i-wi...
