This was another good installment in the series; however, I think I'm still going to be biased towards the first couple Hunter and Camilla. 3.5 Stars
While the books in this series can be read as standalones, I think that it's fun to read them in order because you see how couples meet before they get their own book. Readers first meet Xavier and Corrine in book 1 where they go on a double date with Camilla and Hunter. Xavier definitely feels a little more alpha-male than his brother Hunter. He's still sweet and endearing to Corrine, but the constant need to be in her presence at all times was hard for me to deal with at times (this says nothing about the author. I just struggle with alpha males depending on how they are presented). However, the sex scenes in this one were sooooooooo good! I mean. I don't even know how to explain the perfection that Norris is able to create when it comes down to her smutty scenes, but this was FANTASTIC.
As with the first book, I also struggled quite a bit with the antagonist. Technically there are two antagonists, but one isn’t as significant as the other. It was clear from the beginning what role this individual would play; however, I don't think the execution really went that well. It was wild, but also written in an extremely convenient way for Xavier to be able to come in and save the day. This definitely was an interesting and fun addition to the series. Norris' writing was still enjoyable in this second book and I'm looking forward to continuing the series.
Lord Have Mercyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy!!!! I thought Hunter was my Bae but Good God Almighty....Xavier is my Bae-Bae for Real!!!!! Jesus, Mary and Joseph!!! I need an Xavier in my life ASAP!!!!!!
We were introduced to Xavier and Corinne in book 1 of "No Holds Barred" which is Hunter and Camille's story. So Xavier and Corinne take center stage, what we realized is that they have been talking on the phone and sending texts since first meeting, well actually when Hunter and Xavier went to Florida to get Camille out of the hurricane which Corinne and Camille's parents where there also. Xavier and Corinne are attracted to each other but wonder can it be more than that for them, and if it's worth exploring. When Xavier asks Corinne if they can meet half way during one of her layovers, she agrees but wonders how will he be able to do so. What Corinne will discover about Xavier is that he is a man who knows what and who he wants.
We get to watch Xavier and Corinne discover what it means to love each other without any hindrances and we also get to see that Xavier is a savage lover (Good God Almighty!!!!!!), he has claimed Corinne and there is no turning back even if she wanted to, she is captured by the Big Man Xavier himself, the hunter has captured his prey and has no desire to ever let her go and good thing Corinne doesn't want to be released Woot! Woot!
But what is a great story without antagonists, Carlos with Corinne and Nadine with Xavier, what I loved about this story, was there is zero waffling, Xavier shut Nadine's a$$ all the way down and Carlos discovered rather brutally how it is not in the best interest to mess with a woman that belongs to a Valentine man, period and you will be lucky to leave with your life.
Great story in this series and I highly recommend it. Next story up is Lance Valentine and Allison Sullivan, so I am definitely on the look out waiting for their story to drop.
Enjoyed this couple too, but not as much as the first. This was definitely steamier, but I missed the sweetness and connection the first couple had.
Still really enjoy this author's writing, and Jakobi Diem's narration is fantastic as always. I plan to continue on in the series, really love these Valentine brothers!
That moment when you claim Hunter as your new book bae but, then you're introduced to Xavier and now you're questioning your entire new fake relationship. I just don't know how Hunter and I can be together because, hunty, Xavier is the truth! A Risqué Engagement is one of the sexiest books I've ever listened to. Xavier and Corrine were the epitome of black romance. It was nice to see them fall in love (again, rather quickly) without any drama. We also get to see that Xavier is a beast in bed. Fix it Jesus!!! Let me go find my imaginary pearls because, they definitely need to be clutched! My only complaint is, I felt like the stalker part of the story line wasn't developed enough. It went rather quickly and there was no element of surprise once the "stalker" was revealed. Also, I would have loved to see more of a confrontation between Corinne and Nadine. That scene in Xavier's office wasn't messy enough and it was too short. If you blinked, you missed it. Other than that, A Risqué Engagement was a really good book. I am loving this series.
This did not work for me. At all. In any way. I do not know why I finished it.
To start off with the terrible ending — what kind of person proposes to his girlfriend during a best man toast at his brothers wedding??? And invites a random guest to said wedding?
And then there are the sex scenes, which made me visibly cringe with basically every word. Things like “River of lava coursed through our loins” and “beating against the dam inside of her until she burst” and so many more icky phrasings that I just hated. This woman literally passed out from sex. Twice.
Both the hero and the heroine were pretty forgettable. I don’t even remember the heroine’s name and I finished the book 20 minutes ago.
There is tons of head-hopping. Back and forth between the hero and the heroine between sentences and paragraphs, rather than having clear transitions between scenes or chapters or little asterisks. This was exacerbated by the fact that there were two narrators. It was really jolting to suddenly be hearing the heroine’s thoughts for two sentences while the male narrator was talking.
It also jumped into the heads of characters other than our main couple, which is a personal pet peeve of mine. I don’t want to hear from the heroine’s friend, or the hero’s brother, or the hero’s business rival’s potential love interest. Just unnecessary and distracting.
ETA — the plot is cruising along at “negative angst” for like 95% and then suddenly a stalker with a gun shows up. So there’s that too.
TLDR: boring characters + cringey sex = would not recommend, and fundamentally don’t understand how the rating is so high
Steam: 4/5🔥

5 stars. I love Hunter Valentine, I swear I do but I’m breaking up with him for his brother Xavier because damn is that man perfection. All of the Valentine men are perfection and I feel like I’m going to love each one more than the previous with each book.
I loved this book so much, even more than book one. Xavier and Corrine are such a great couple and this book is very, very sexy. Top notch smut right here. They have an undeniable chemistry. I like that the author doesn’t add the unnecessary second act break up in her books (so far), the characters are adults and behave as such. There’s no silly misunderstandings and they communicate with each other very well which I love. She adds drama in a different way that doesn’t require the characters to behave like immature idiots. The ending was super cute and everything wrapped up nicely. I also enjoyed seeing more Hunter and Camilla. They are just the cutest couple.
Great read, I’m loving this series so much and I cannot wait to read the next book.

And not in a good way. I realize we have to suspend some reality when it comes to fiction in general and especially romance, but come on! I’ve only read three installments from these brother series and they’re all the same. Girl meets guy, girl and guy fall in love, guy saves girl from some ridiculous debacle (of the 3 I’ve read this is the 2nd kidnapping), girl and guy get engaged. And then this proposal was at the complete wrong place and time so couldn’t get behind that. People really love these books so I kept reading to give it a try but it’s just not for me.
These Valentine men are too much! Irl I'd be throwing up all kinds of red flags, but since it a romance books I am saying YES! Give me all the aggressive, you're beautiful, instalove. Xavier was all things charming. Corrine was receptive to all the charm. On to the next Valentine. Happy reading!
A sequel theme was chosen by Beautiful By Design (BBD) for this cycle. In the Heart of a Valentine is an 8-part series by author Stephanie Nicole Norris. The first book was titled No Holds Barred. In case you missed my review of Book 1, you can check it out here in Goodreads. The second book in the series is titled, A Risqué Engagement which received 3.75 out of 5 star rating by BBD. Many thanks to DeAnna for being the host and navigating us through it with probing questions to spark our discussions. Since we have settled into this virtual world of book club for the long haul, we want to always give thanks to Skype for providing that virtual platform for us to come together. As always, BBD will keep it moving.
This was definitely another easy read. So far, both books have equally brought something to the table. Kudos to the author for writing the series in such a way that even if the reader did not read the first book, they would be able to know the relationship of the characters without retelling the first story. This was a very sexy book from the cover to the content (did I say cover!) with passion radiating from the pages between the two main characters. The author took us on a journey that we could visualize and feel by using powerful descriptors to describe characters, places, and intimate details. We felt the emotions and chemistry between Xavier and Corrine as they struggled to find love. We could envision the swag and certainty of Xavier through his candidness and witty banter. Through discussion, BBD discovered there were several highlights we all shared.
While we welcome the idea of the love story and it was enough to keep our interest, BBD agreed it was lacking substance. There were a lot of unfinished thoughts and it lacked quality drama and believability in some aspects. There needs to be more unexpected twists with more in-depth buildup to the drama, so it does not appear rushed. Both books have a similar pattern in the storyline development; however, we are hoping this will not be the canned story style for all 8 parts. We are also hoping somewhere in the series Ms. Norris will develop and closeout characters mentioned to provide clarity on their relevance to the story as well as their relationships to the Valentines. For example, there were unfinished thoughts regarding what Nadine had to tell Xavier, who was Carlos really, and the relevance of Natasha Kaweme and Monica, the stewardess.
Lastly, there were still some grammatical errors in this book, but they were minor in comparison to the first book and did not detract from the story. As always, we wanted to disclose this information for transparency and we look forward to reading Book 3.
Wow, just when you get to know Hunter Valentine...here comes Xavier. These novellas of handsome men are killing me. Xavier was introduced, as well as Corinne in the first book when they met up on a blind date. Here the story picks up with them at Hunter and Camilla's wedding and realizing how much they would like to get to know one another.
As novellas go, they are quick and enjoyable. Yeah, some things may seem unrealistic but all the same the relationship leading up to the climax (HEA) is wonderful. I love how much Xavier is a gentleman in this story and does not push Corinne and let her take the reigns on how fast their relationship should move. Love their chemistry and very much enjoyed the book.
Narration...what can I say about Jakobi Diem. His voice is so sexy and I've just been introduced to new narrator, Wesleigh Siobhan. She did a nice job but I was not bowled over by her voice. Moving on to the next Valentine and recommend these short reads.
Corinne and Xavier are too sexy! Her coming off that table for Nadine and him talking about who has the biggest pair. Ha! Reminded me of my family. Excellent. Highly recommend.
I ❤️ me a “love at first sight” story! Xavier Valentine & Corinne Thomas were taken with each other ever since they were introduced by Xavier’s brother Hunter and Corinne’s bestfriend Camilla! Xavier was a perfect gentleman the entire relationship & I LOVE that for Corinne! Corinne is also a class act, however, she can get real good real quick & that showed when she came face to face with the treacherous Nadine 😒! Between Nadine & that Carlos character, I don’t know who was goofier 🤣!
This story also brought in new characters, new issues with a rival family, new deals, & most importantly introduced new love to blossom 🥰! These Valentine’s men have been beyond A M A Z I N G so far! Let’s continue with Mr. Lance Valentine.!
These Valentines! They know how to sweep a woman off her feet! Another great listen from Stephanie Nicole Norris, book 2 of In The Heart of a Valentine. I love how it's a quick connection between Xavier and Corinne because we were already introduced to them in the first book. We get to see their relationship go to the next level. This was narrated by Wesleigh Siobhan and Jakobi Diem so you know it's on point. A great listen and highly recommend the series to everyone.
OMG!!! I WANT A VALENTINE BROTHER OF MY OWN!!!! Jesus, these books are so good. When you find THE ONE you know it. No games. No questions. And the angst.....the steam.....SOMEONE TURN ON THE FAN!! Now I need more from this author, she has quickly become a fav!!
Although I liked this story, I enjoyed Camilla and Hunter's story a little bit more. But I do think that Xavier is smart, sexy and represents the Valentine men very well. Corinne is also smart--so funny--and a very beautiful and sexy woman. Also, Ms. Norris continues to take readers for a ride to the most beautiful and exotic locations. Her descriptions are so vivid and exquisite, it makes you really want to hop on a plane immediately.
As for Xavier and Corinne, I thought their chemistry was undeniably hot. I enjoyed a lot of their conversations too. Xavier certainly knows how to be smooth and sultry, and says just the right thing to get a lady's heartrate up:
"I love this skin you're in. . . so soft, sweet and beautiful. . . More than that, there's been this unnatural chemistry surrounding us that's made me want you in ways that a man should only want his wife."🥰💖🔥🔥
Some of the things Corinne and Xavier did in public were quite risque'—hence the title—and that restaurant scene had me especially wondering what I’d do if the couple I was eating lunch with started making out in front of me like some horny teenagers!😶🙈
I would have loved to have seen more than one confrontation between Corinne and Xavier's ex, Nadine---just to spice things up a bit more. I did love the way Xavier handled Nadine though, and how he kept Corinne calm because she was ready to get scrappy. Nadine was nothing more than a gold-digging snob, and Xavier handled her uppity arse like a pro.
Corinne’s stalker was taken care of a bit too quickly—old creep. 🙄 I kind of wished it would have been a lot more drawn out. I'd certainly like to know how he managed to track her down. I hate saying this, too, but this book also needs a bit more proofreading/editing as well.
However, I really liked the story and look forward to reading about Lance next.💖💖
This book had a better and more believable ending than the book before it in the series. That said, everything else about the book was subpar for me. The relationship between Xavier and Corrine was romantic but the storyline was lacking. I kept waiting for something to grasp onto. Something that made me think or wonder or hope for something. There was nothing. I literally knew what the characters were going to say next...it was that predictable. There was the issue with the exes but that happened and then was resolved so quickly that I wasn’t invested in it. No buildup, no developed storyline, just a couple meeting up with each other around the world and going on trips. I struggled to finish and in the end, I found that I just didn’t care what happened to these characters.
I enjoyed this one more than the first one. The chemistry the Valentine brothers have with each of their love interest really sets fire to the page. I liked seeing more into the business side and family dynamics with the brothers in this one. And also seeing the her lifestyle as a flight attendant. It was all going great but that ending was like a soap opera. A lot was happening. Which was one of the reasons I knocked it down a star. Debating if I should continue with the series. They all seem to follow a similar structure/setup..
This book was way better than the first! The chemistry these too had were REAL and intense.
Never a boring moment in the book. I’m still getting accustomed to this author’s writing style because the POV/narration is basically from everyone (idk if I explained that correctly). But whenever I got a bit confused I just had to re-read the lines to catch up.
Also I don’t think these books are the kind you can just “breeze through”, the author’s vocabulary gives me a run for my money! Greatful I’m reading these on Kindle so that I can keep up
Never in my life have I read that. I had to re read that just to make sure I was reading what I was reading.
I dont know what happened after that in the book. There was something about showing up at the office in a trench coat and a gun at a bachelorette party, but I don't know.
He burped!

(4.25) I am loving the Valentine Brothers thus far. Although I liked Xavier and Corinne, I felt there were a lot of missing parts and/or moments that could have had more to it. The spice in these books is ridiculous you will literally be questioning your life. LOL
I am LOVING THE VALENTINE brother's. I must admit I'm new to reading this authors work. I love how the story flows, the was that the author gets you too feel apart of the story, love the lives of the characters. GREAT READ, CAN'T WAIT FOR MORE FROM HER. I'M A FAN FOR SURE NOW..
Once again, I really enjoyed this second book in the In the Heart of a Valentine Series. I listened to it in audio and the performers did a fantastic job. The storytelling was engaging. However! However, like with the first book, I had a few niggling issues with this book two and being a very similar book in conflict and structure to the first book, they were similar issues to my issues with book 1. For example, characters would go on somewhat humbly braggadocious speeches about themselves and their interests but that’s not even the main thing. Again, I didn’t feel like Xavier was respectful of Corinne’s professionalism at her workplace AND Corinne herself, to me also let her professionalism down with the way she handled Xavier during her flight. Also, the hero is wonderfully respectful and adoring of Corinne, which is why it was startling and a little out of character when they pretty much went at it with great heat at a brunch in a cafe surrounded by paying customers. Finally, there was something of an air of Corinne not being quite like other women that is not my favourite sentiment. Xavier expresses dozens of reasons why he loved Corinne. Whenever someone has to shade a whole group of people just to praise one, it’s shady and unnecessary.
These books are technically standalone but I would highly recommend reading them in order because they are all closely interlinked and you will miss some initial meetings and back stories if you skip out on some books. This book features BFF of book 1 heroine, Corinne, a flight attendant (who wants to be known as a stewardess) AND second Valentine brother (well they’re 6 living brothers and they were septuplets so I’m not rightly sure if he’s the 2nd), Xavier, a high powered sports agent who we met in book 1. The two have bad past experiences and are somewhat uncertain about moving forward with a serious relationship but they can’t let go of their attraction for each other.
I feel very invested in this Valentine world. I do genuinely like the characters and the stories in this series. I want a Valentine brother too because they love hard and well and are absolutely everything. Even though there are some niggling things with this series so far that kind of bother me, this author is definitely on my “I must deep dive into her backlist” list.

I loved Xavier and Corinne's story! It was a whirlwind romance that progressed very rapidly. I really wanted more and hated to see if end. The love was evident from the beginning, it was just when would they discovered they lived one another. Carlos was a psychopath and the lesson is always be cognizant of your surroundings! These Valentine brothers are too hot to handle and I look forward to hearing about each of the remaining four! I sure hope they come sooner than later Stephanie Norris, I will be anticipating. I just wanted to mention there are a few grammatical errors but they did not diminish the storyline, just noted. Thanks for another great read!
