A Murder in Helvetica Bold

Rate this book
BURIED LEDES AND BURIED SECRETS

When Ruth Townsend's job and marriage both end abruptly, she heads home to the mountains for a fresh start. Nine months later, she has a new hobby, good friends, and a potential new romance--but only two dozen subscribers to the weekly newspaper she's intent on reviving. What she needs is a good mystery...but nothing ever happens in sleepy little Thistlewood.

Then Edith Morton is found dead at the bottom of her staircase. Her son and the sheriff both assume that the old woman jumped, but a shattered teacup and eerie passages from Edith's diary about a dark-haired boy lead Ruth to believe there's more to the story. Was Edith simply a victim of dementia, or did someone push her over the edge? Ruth is too curious not to keep digging, but her investigation is unearthing secrets someone spent decades trying to hide.

Can Ruth find out who killed Edith Morton before she or someone she loves becomes the next obituary in the Thistlewood Star?

She ain't no Catwoman

What a terrific read. A great plot revolving around a 50 year old divorcee who is trying to bring the local paper back to life. She certainly doesn't expect a murder both in the past and the present to give her newspaper a kick start. What wonderful characters from our heroine, who was never very athletic to suddenly find herself trying to shimmy down a drainpipe to the bear, who has taken over as a guardian after she nursed him back to heath when he was a cub.
Her daughter's visit is a wonderful chance to catch up but she refuses to visit her BFF's apartment. Okay she does live over the funeral home and her daughter has always had an aversion to anything to do with death - but still! However it might have been a good thing as the two women are involved in the finding the body of the next door neighbour. A death that most write of as an accident or suicide but she has a gut feeling it isn't so simple. As does the former sheriff who had to retire after being hit by the car of the present sheriff's son. A journal, ghostly sightings, a disappearance of a young worker 60 years ago, a sort of secret love affair and a greedy killer. Will the two survive a cold blooded killer? Or will their secret guardian have to take charge?

3.5 stars, rounded up

This has been on my to-read shelf for several years, and I'm glad I finally decided to read it. I like Ruth, the MC, and her determination to keep the town's weekly newspaper afloat. She has a good group of people around her to help make that happen and to support her in her other endeavors as well. Although unrealistic, I loved the scenes with Remy, the bear :)

We didn't get to know the murder victim before the body was discovered, so it was hard to create an initial list of suspects. As Ruth's investigation continued, though, more names were added to the list. I thought I knew who the killer was and their motive, but I was only partially right.

I look forward to reading the next book in this series when I'm able to get my hands on a copy.

Ruth towns and finds herself back home in Thistlewood after her job ends and her marriage breaks up. But as a determined journalist she gets a new hobby (birdwatching), and publishing the Thistlewood Star. She has great friends and even a possible romantic interest but after nine months she still only has two dozen subscribers plus about 50 or so sold at the store. Nothing seems to happen in their small town that is until there is a suspicious death. Of course she is going to investigate.

This is a great cozy mystery. The characters are very well defined and hold your interest. The narrative gives great descriptions that both allow you to get into the characters heads but also to give you s sense of the small town atmosphere. You can picture in your mind the small town, the mountainous view and the old paper office. This all adds depth to the experience. The author weaves a great story that encompasses a murder mystery, hijinks, romance, surprise and unexpected events that lead to an emotionally charged and surprising climax. It is well written having all the elements of a great cozy mystery and it’s worth the read.

Jessa Archer does it again! A death in Thistlewood.... but is it suicide or murder? Ruth is determined to find out for sure but with the many twists, you don't find out until the end. Lots of laughs along with intrigue and fun characters. Can't wait for the next one in this series.

Good cozy read

I enjoyed this book so much that I read it in one sitting - and that's not easy at my age (I'm 80 years old). I liked The ambiance and the suggestion that there is something under the surface if I want to find it. I enjoyed the bear's role in the story and the hint of what might be in store in future books. Thanks for a good ride on the imagination train.

So Rysa has been pretty busy since the Delphi Revolution finished up last year. She’s been co-writing with Caleb Amsel a few cozy mysteries and doing some speculative fiction. I haven’t read any of the speculative fiction yet, but I did get this cozy mystery off my TBR pile.

If you like cozy mysteries, but want something a little different, I think this fits the bill. There is a precocious bear that plays a decent sized roll in this book, which gives us some laughs. That is very different from anything I’ve read by Rysa. I’ve never seen funny from her before. I really liked it.

This story is about starting over and building a life for yourself after great strains have been given up either in death or by legal ease. Ruth is building a new life for herself without the security blankets of her husband and her job. She decides she’s going to get the paper back up and running that she first worked at as a kid. With some perseverance she believes she can bring it back to life. In actuality she realizes unless she can give the town a good headline she won’t be able to make the sales she needs. Lucky for her she gets a scoop on a murder right next door to her BFF.

–So maybe it isn’t her lucky day, but she doesn’t really know that until she’s knee deep in solving the case.

The paper’s previous owner had this cute quirk where a different type (font as we call them now) was chosen for the obituary of each person. Once the font was used in an obituary it wasn’t used again. Since it was such a small town the type would be selected based on the kind of person the departed was. I found this really cool and made me look at my fonts and think about which one I’d like used for my obituary.

The dearly departed’s son it turns out was trying to recreate his life after his mother died. He was her caregiver and it doesn’t sound like she was very easy to deal with or kind. So who could blame him for maybe killing her…turns out there were lots of people who felt she needed to go. Ruth delves into all their lives and digs up way too much dirt. This puts her and her family in danger. She uses her smarts to out smart the killer in the end, which we expect.

There is a little romance in this series for both Ruth and her daughter who begins to spend more and more time with her Mom now that her Dad is out of the picture. I haven’t read the rest of the series, but I’m sure she will give Ruth and her daughter a HEA eventually.

I’m giving this a 4 of 5 propellers for her breakout in cozy mystery it worked well. The story held together and I wasn’t even sure who the killer was up until nearly the end. That makes it a winner in my book.

I thought this was a well-written and humorous cozy mystery. I totally enjoyed meeting the main character, Ruth Townsend, and her family and friends. There were a couple of too dumb to live moments (TDTL) but she either got called on them each time (really, an anonymous note on a windshield? What was she thinking!) or landed in the mud as a consequence.

The crime that was central to the plot was complicated and multi-generational leading to a very intense climax. I didn't realize who was the villain(s) until the reveal and the hero who saved the day was totally unexpected. There was a touch of romance but it was fairly low-key and provides a promising and knowledgeable partner in future adventures with Ruth and company.

There were a lot of bad vibes in this village, especially with the present sheriff. It be interesting to see how that plays out in future books in this series. One of the best lines by the MC was this dialogue with the sheriff:
"Hey Townsend?" he called as he stood in the half-opened doorway. I didn't answer, just looked up at him with a raised eyebrow.
"You two stay out of trouble, okay?"
"Can't make any promises," I told him. "I have a job to do. But we'll try and let you solve one every now and again."

You go, girl!

P.S. As someone who has worked in publishing and layout, I totally enjoy the use of font names in the titles and how Ruth was continuing the practice of finding unique fonts for each individual's obituary. A very touching tradition!

Ruth has been back in her hometown for a while now and has a good start on rebuilding her life after her divorce at the age of 50. She is just barely getting the town newspaper back in business when a neighbor dies under suspicious circumstances. Law enforcement is leaning toward natural causes or suicide, but clues lead Ruth to believe that foul play was involved. She and her daughter, Cassandra, who is in town for an extended visit, feel a need to investigate for themselves.

In particular, I enjoyed the relationship between Ruth and her adult daughter. They act in a naturally friendly way that all mothers and their adult children should do. After having read the mini prequel about the bear, I was glad to see the town's secondary characters take on a bit more depth. Some townspeople have intriguing pasts. I like how this mystery brought up questions from the past and drew out a person who looked out for Ruth. I thought on occasion that the author did informational dumps rather than incorporate important information more seamlessly. That said, I did enjoy this amateur sleuth mystery.

I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.

Ruth Townsend is back in her home town and has revived the Thistlewood Star newspaper. This was the place that gave Ruth her first taste of newspapers and journalism, so she wants to make a success of things. What she needs is some newsworthy items like a good mystery to bring up the readership, but nothing ever happens in sleepy little Thistlewood. That is until Edith Morton is found dead at the bottom of her staircase. Everyone assumes the old woman has jumped to her death, but Ruth has her suspicions that it was murder.

This is a cozy mystery at its finest and I invite other readers to pick up the book. It is filled with madcap adventure, humor, a bit of chick lit, mystery, and a storyline that will keep you guessing “was it suicide or murder” all the way until the end.

Another great cozy mystery from Jessa Archer! She has definitely become one of my favorite new authors. Well written, suspense, a great plot to the story. After her marriage and job end, Ruth heads to her hometown for a fresh start. She's trying to revive the small town newspaper and she needs a good story for that to happen. The problem is nothing happens in Thistewood, but that may soon change. When an elderly woman is found at the bottom of her staircase, people just assumed she jumped. Ruth is having a hard time believing that's what happened so she keeps digging. The secrets she finds have been buried for decades and whoever buried them doesn't want those secrets out. Will Ruth find out the truth before she becomes the next obituary in the paper?

Ruth the newspaper owner is visiting her funeral parlor owning friend Wren for lunch in her homey kitchen when they hear yelling. A neighbor found dead at the bottom of her stairs.

Ruth works to untangle the related mystery with her friends Wren, retired Sheriff Ed and her visiting daughter Cassie. They seem to be getting some help from fierce Maine Coon mix kitty Cronkite and watchfulness from the neighboring forestland- not always four legged, fuzzy or friendly.

An exciting small town mystery that spans generations of history and prejudice.

Intense yet sometimes light hearted, sometimes very reflective, KU read.

I received an advance copy of this book from Booksprout. I own or borrowed most of the books in this and other series from this author in KU or Kindle format.

Ruth Townswend buys the local paper of the small town she had apprenticed at a lifetime ago. Bringing the Newspaper back to life as a means to connect the people of Thistlewood. She hopes for a nice mystery that will keep her readers interested, but she really did not want to be involved in a murder case, especially when the sheriff is accusing her of being an ambulance chaser.
But she feels the urge to find out who the killer was as well as who is stalking her house while her daughter is visiting.
A good cozy mystery with a former journalist sleuth and a funeral home owner and the former sheriff as sidekicks.
Well-written and highly entertaining...

This looks to be a promising new-to-me cozy mystery series. I really liked Ruth, her back story, her relationship with her adult daughter and her ties to the small town newspaper she is determined to revive. Her skills as a journalist lend well to investigative work...even though they get her in trouble a time or two. This first book gives a lovely sense of setting and we get to meet some (hopefully) recurring secondary characters that are either fun and quirky or infuriating. Perfect combination for a light mystery. Speaking of which, it's well plotted and kept me guessing right to the dramatic finale. Will eagerly continue on with the series.

A neighbor of Wren’s is found at the bottom of her stairs with her neck broken. Is it an accident, or murder? This time Ruth has the help of her daughter, Cassie, her bff, Wren, and boyfriend, Ed, helping her. Also, Remy, the cute bear cub that Ruth rescued in the prequel, shows himself to Ruth a few times since he’s grown, in this wonderful murder mystery. Although Cronkite, the cat, really hates him showing up!

This book was a good start to the series after the mini mystery. The plot of the story was well thought out but I felt as if there was too much background information that was provided. The extra information did bring a bit of nostalgia to the forefront of Ruth's purpose, but it seemed as if it was trying pulling the story into a different direction than was intended. The characters are relatable and sorta witty, which added flair to the storyline.

Ruth was approaching 50 and starting over in Thistlewood with an aim to revive The Thistlewood Star, the town’s local newspaper. It was slow, but gradually growing in subscribers. What they needed was a good mystery.

Then someone turns up dead. By the looks of it, the 80-year old woman just tripped, fell, and broke her neck. But Ruth, who has returned to her journalist skills, takes another look and has some questions. Meanwhile, the cranky, old sheriff accuses her of wanting a story for her boring, little newspaper. But something just wasn’t adding up.

A fun, crafty mystery!

Ruth is visiting her friend, Wren, when a call for help signals involvement in a mystery. Although the Sheriff doesn’t think investigation is necessary, there are too many inconsistencies. Ruth needs to find the true story. I loved reading about friends from Baskerville for the Bear, and especially the hero who saved the day. I recommend A Murder in Helvetica Bold.

Enjoyable read!
Jessica Archer brings life to the characters in this really nice and funny book. If you like a mystery but don't like gory details and blood - this is for you. With her clever writing, she moves the plot towards a conclusion but doesn't let you get a hint of what has happened in the past, until the last couple of chapters and the question of whodunit hangs there through the whole book and makes you want to finish the book in one sitting. Loved it.

I love the characters that I was able to get to know some in the mini-mystery and they are absolutely wonderful. This story carries on with getting the newspaper up and running and of course, a murder. I love the twists and turns that kept me guessing and the story is so well-written, I am hooked on this series. Cannot wait until the next book.

Not her best, but a nice way to pass time

After devouring her CHRONOS and Delphi series, I was happy to find this. I have become a fan of this author. This series, or this first book in the series, was not as riveting the other two. I will keep reading, though, because she is a good author.

Good Read

Fun, fast moving, and easy to follow along. Well written, too. Ruth is the owner of an old weekly newspaper. Her daughter, who is visiting, helps her solve a mysterious death that proves to be murdered. Throw in a lazy sheriff with a bad attitude , and a new romantic interest for Ruth, and you've got a winner! Can't wait for the next one.

A fun cozy mystery. I like that the main character is a reporter who can, reasonably, go around asking questions.

(Catching up on recording my October reading. Identical review for first 3 books in the series.)
