DNF, volume nine and ten should've been a limited series, period. It has nothing to do with the main storyline and feels pretty pointless, couldn't care less for the Solar Rangers.

[This review covers both volumes of Beyond The Grid, Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers Volumes 9 and 10]

After Shattered Grid, it was hard to know where Power Rangers was going to go. With the Grid (kinda) repaired, and everything (also kinda) back to normal, what is there to worry about? So instead of focusing on Earth, we follow a ragtag group of Rangers who escaped into the Morphin' Grid aboard the Promethea, and their adventures....Beyond The Grid!

Which is a good idea in theory. In practise, it's a little wishywashy. I think the main problem is that the characters that are thrown together are all from disparate Ranger teams, most of which I personally have never seen before. While I could appreciate using Shattered Grid to bring everyone together, shifting the focus away from the main Mighty Morphin' team for these guys and girls feels like a misstep, and it's not as much fun when you don't really know who everyone is or why they are the way they are.

Thankfully the rest of the plot's pretty solid. The idea of a dimension separated from the (supposedly all-encompassing) Morphin' Grid is explored well, and the new characters and villains thrown at the team feel fleshed out and complete by the end of the story. Writer Marguerite Bennett has some interesting musings on the nature of Morphin' Energy and what makes a Ranger that ring true for a Power Ranger story, but it's still quite difficult to reconcile when you're not very well acquainted with the main team.

Oh, and the art's fantastic; Simone Di Meo pencils all but one of the nine issue arc, and it's beautiful from top to bottom. The sweeping vistas of space, the personal moments aboard the Promethea, and the Ranger battles are all wonderful to behold.

Beyond The Grid was a good experiment, but I feel it would have worked better as a separate story, rather than taking over the main MMPR series. It's worth reading, and you'll probably get more out of it if your Ranger knowledge extends beyond the original few series, but otherwise a lot of the emotional beats don't land the way they should.

Probably 3.5 stars, but the art & coloring were absolutely stunning and the Cameron/Heckyl/Kimberly dynamic was so, so good!!

This volume concludes the short lived Beyond the Grid story arc. To be honest, I really loved a lot of the ideas in this story but I just didn't feel like we got to know any of the characters enough. I did really enjoy getting to know Heckyl's story though. I wanted more stories like that.

Having the focus on rangers from various seasons is so different than the rest of this ongoing comic. This story has felt like a brief pause from the main story to give us a breather after Shattered Grid. I liked seeing all the different rangers interacting. Even the rangers who couldn't morph still doing their thing in the background.

The Solar Rangers are awesome. I wanted much, much more of them! I really hope we see more of the badass Solar Rangers in future stories.

This volume felt really truncated. It seemed like more should have happened. More build-ups to get where this led. But I loved the ending. There was a lot of talking about the themes instead of just showing them through actions and story. I give this book a 4.5/5. It was really good, but I felt like it didn't quite live up to the amazing storytelling that's been happening in this ongoing series.

The conclusion to the Blue Senturion and Ninjor's story is also in this book. That was a fun story. I liked them working together. They make a great duo. Very humorous dialogue.

This volume concludes the scattered rangers’ journey in the alternate pocket space they found themselves after their fight with Drakkon. We find out more about our ragtag ranger group, and in true rangers fashion they manage to help reconnect this pocket universe back to the morphin grid. I think what I’ll miss is this particular group of rangers working together as they will all inevitably be pulled back into their respective timelines and universes. I thought this group demonstrated rich potential for more storylines.

I tried to binge the modern Power Rangers comics because I'd heard for years how they were somehow among the best licensed comics out there these days, and that seemed impressive considering the source material. I really enjoyed up until this arc but this ground my binge to a halt. After this absolutely grueling attempt at some sort of Neil Gaiman/Grant Morrison/Jeff Lemire clone without any of their nuance or wit I'm taking a real break!

3.1/5.0

Man, did this really take a dive. The extensive dialogue paired with a lack of character depth really make for a dull conclusion to the "Beyond the Grid" storyline.

This review covers both Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Vol. 9 and Vol. 10 as they are a single contained arc.

The Short Answer
A fascinating take on the Power Rangers that boldy tries to tell a new type of story and expand the types of stories possible in the Power Rangers universe. Despite being bolstered by amazing art it suffers from incredibly uneven storytelling and poorly established characters which often makes it extremely difficult to follow. Thankfully it's not connected to the main storyline so if you're not enjoying it you can jump ahead to Volume 11 without missing anything.

The Long Answer
Wow, this was an odd one to read. I really liked the story a lot, so much so that I actually went back and reread chunks once I fully understood what was going on. That said, I shouldn't have had to reread it just to understand it. Let's take a look at what happened.

Art - The art is absolutely beautiful. The alien universe the Power Rangers find themselves in is stunningly rendered and feels like somewhere truly unique. There are loads of two page spreads filling the book making it almost an art book in its own right. I will reread this book again in the future just to admire how pretty it is. That said, the art is sometimes very confusing to follow in action sequences. I dig into that more in the story section though.

Characters - This is a mixed bag. The characters are all well fleshed out and grow along with the story but... and it's a big but... they assume you already know who everyone is and what their backstory is. That's fine with characters introduced in the previous volumes, but most of them are characters that we've never seen before. If you're like me and never watched anything past the original Mighty Morphin Power Rangers you're going to be veeery confused as to who's who. A few introductions would have gone a long way to making the story easier to follow, and to making the emotional beats land better.

Story - The story is really good, when you can follow it. Unfortunately it is often told in ways that are nearly impossible to follow. This is especially problematic in action sequences. Often you'll see a close up on a ship or something as a character we just joined encounters a laser or something we haven't been shown before cutting to another character doing something different that's also not explained. This takes all the tension out of the scenes because you have no sense of how the battle is progressing or who is doing what. After how well this was handled in Shattered Grid I'm supremely disappointed here. There's even a scene where one character accidentally shoots another character (I think) but only has a gun in one frame (I think, it's only shown in extreme closeup so I have to guess here). I reread this sequence six times before giving up and just making up my own version of events in my head because I gave up.

It's a shame this story is full of such glaring and easily fixable errors, because it could have been a true classic in this universe. Instead it ends up being just OK. If you can forgive these problems there's a fantastic story waiting to be found here, but the problems are big enough I wouldn't blame you for skipping this entirely and going on to Vol. 11.

I obviously got waylaid trying to get into this one after reading the first issue about Hekyl, mainly because it felt like such a bottle episode that I just entirely disconnected. I could follow the plot of this Beyond the Grid arc, but I just struggle to see how it connects back to the Shattered Grid series. It felt like it was intended to be compelling backstory for the version of Kimberly that was the Ranger Hunter (?) and some of the other offshoot rangers, but it just felt so muddied and convoluted that I felt lost with these characters and what my connection to them was meant to be, it at all. Hoping the next few issues get back to the core original cast, which seemed like the best way forward for this series.

An epic finale for Beyond The Grid storyline.

The Praetor is giving his all to stop the rangers from ruining his legacy of becoming the savior of the void while keeping his totalitarian rule stays and he face the might of the Solar Rangers that are determined to destroy him once and for all.

It's so breathtaking, Marguerite Bennett really keeps the tension of The Praetor exists while also made the ranger or in this case the member of the Solar Rangers vulnerable yet also strong at the same time (especially Mike)

The art is very gorgeous and so good to look at, a staple of Power Rangers comic.

Kudos to Boom for making another modern classic!

Once again the action is hard to follow sometimes and it bombards the reader with a ton of information for a lot of it's run, but this arc was pretty great. It has plenty of great dialogue that proves Marguerite Bennett understands the material. The characters are fun and bounce really well off each other. This run would have benefited greatly from one or two more issues. I hope Boom Studios diversifies the creative team on this book, cuz as much as I loved what Ryan Parrot did on Go Go, Im not really looking forward to him helming this series for too long.

Man, I would like to care about these characters and if they had been fleshed out and given more story before just being thrusted into the story, I probably would have. I was hopelessly lost reading the last two volumes. I am very glad to see that volume 11 sees Ryan return to writing. There is some great art and colors in this volume but it's hard to be excited by it when the story makes little sense.

Volume 10 of the Power Rangers comic and no sign of losing interest! I love this comic, I love what they're doing now, and odds are that I'll love what they're doing later! This collection finishes up the Beyond the Grid event so I'm super interested to see what they go on to next! I've heard the Necessary Evil event is killer and we're coming up on that one quickly!

Good wrap up for this storyline as we actually get to see the different rangers interact with each other and we also get a kind of epilogue to Power Rangers Dino Charge as we learn what happened to Zenowing and Heckyl after the end of that series and it is pretty cool. We also get to learn more about the morphing grid which is always nice.

I really struggled to get into this. I didn’t know most of the characters ( TJ just showed up in my rewatch of the Turbo series).

The art was poor, the writing was silly. The plot, while interesting just did nothing for me. Morphing Masters? Ok…

Was going to start vol. 11 but looks like GGPR is next

This second volume of the beyond the grid arc was better, though I still found some parts confusing/weird. In general I like the rangers they picked for this team, even the ones I wasn't already familiar with. I also found the ending really cool and honestly pretty touching.

This story was pretty good, even if it was a bit predictable. My issue was the way it was told. Comics storytelling is a hard thing to do right and the structure of this one was hard to follow at times. Still a solid read though

Por fin lograron descubrir cómo hacer funcionar el grid y por fin van a poder volver a casa, al tiempo y dimensión que les corresponde; lo único malo es que Mike y Tania como podrán sobrellevar esta separación.

Unfortunately this books suffers from it being very filler. I loved the idea of these other rangers being stuck in another universe, and the preator is a good idea for a villain. But it falls flat. Hopefully the next saga is good.

An awesome story, though I wish they could have prolonged it a bit more. It was so fascinating seeing rangers from different eras team-up, plus I really enjoyed the backstory on Heckyl.

Better than part 1 but still has so much untapped potential in the weaker first half of its storyline.

I essentially skimmed this for the visuals. I lost the plot last trade and I’m hoping the next one has a firmer graph of basic storytelling principles.

I really enjoyed the conclusion of this arc of the series. I've started volume 11 and I do wish there was a little more resolution between the end of this volume and the next.
